DEMOGORGON Running 10.5.6, MacBook Pro 15" ... then clicked Call Shntool and got this odd output: sh: shntool: command not found How is this possible? I have shntool installed BOTH in my /opt/local/bin AND in the Contents/Resources/Binaries/bin of the app itself?

VERYCARLA The CD ripping feature doesn't seem to work. I'm working with a clean, unscratched CD which I want to rip. I've had xAct 1.64 working for half an hour, and it's produced zero results. I don't hear any noise coming from the drive at all, and there should be something, as it's a fairly noisy drive. MacOS X 10.5.4, MacBook 1.83ghz Core Duo, 2gb RAM. Ripping to internal hard drive from internal CD-RW.

XSMURF I'm speaking through my hat, but GrowlHelper is a little flawed in 10.5.X and takes a LOT of CPU and it seems to hang rather often (at least here)

AANHORN xACT has replaced both Shorten and FLACer in my audio toolkit, also, it's native on Intel Macs for a degree of future compatibility, unlike other tools. Other than some rare stability issues, xACT does what it says well and is a valuable tool for any Mac users wrestling with the myriad lossless audio formats on the internet.

HOMEWORLD Elegant, slick, fast, reliable, and free! It does the job when three or four other FLACistic utilities fail to do anything but launch and endlessly spin a "busy" indicator. The smooth fade-in at launch is nice. I love simple utilities that do exactly what they're supposed to do, but have the grace to look pretty while doing it. If it only had built-in TiVo support, could mix chocolate martinis, and troubleshoot my car's braking issues, it would be perfect.

I am still using xAct 1.4b24, but noticed something odd when playing around with the Flac Tag tool of this pack. All the available tagging fields matched up with the equivalent fields found within the MediaRage tag utility except "disc". When a .flac "disc" field is edited in xAct, the changes do not show up in the "disc" field after the same file is opened in MediaRage. In a similar fashion, when a .flac file's "disc" field is edited in MediaRage the changes do not show up in xAct. All other fields of the tag will modify appropriately, why not "disc"? Thanks for sharing the free application!

PETER J. PEDERSEN An excellent application! only grievance: it doesn't accept when there are letters with accents in filenames. It's rather a bother having to un-accent every single file when converting French music, for example... Otherwise: I wish all utilities were as stable, fast, and inexpensive as this. PS - I AM aware that it is mostly a UI for routines that are already built into OS X. But it is great that Xact enables non-CLI nerds to use them, too.

GEORGE K. I used to use MacFlac and Shorten, but it looks like this is all I'll ever need from now on. I haven't tested everything out yet, but I ran a test decoding some flac files against MacFlac. With the three files I used, this took under a minute and MacFlac took over two and a half minutes! Wow, huge difference! I'm glad I found this.

ANO4711 I like this easy and good working client xACT. But I am very sorry about some disfunction: with the shntools I check the sector boundary, very helpful to burn CDs in the right way. With 10.3.4. I am not able any more to check on aiff files which I newerly imported to HD this boundaries. The result window is empty. This shntools is soo useful for me. Are there any hints what went wrong?

SCOTT BROWN This was an issue with shntool v1.x. It didn't recognize aif-c files. Shntool v2.0 does (using sox 12.17.4), and will perform len and info operations on aif-c formatted files. The next version of xACT (out very soon) will include shntool v2.0. for a developer copy, go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/xact-users

CABBAGE WOW! It's Shorten for Mac plus shntool. It's FLACer only with more options. It supports Monkey's Audio and this beta just added flac metadata = ID3 tags! Finally I don't have to bring over my flac files to Windows to add metadata! Send Scott your bug reports so he can fix 'em.

SCOTT BROWN This is *not* a final version of 1.3. It does not work 100% as advertised and very likely has bugs I don't know about (in addition to the ones i do know about). It won't hurt your machine in any way, but certain features may not work correctly. In addition to new features, it fixes bugs from the previous 1.2 release. See the readme for more info on changes

SINNWELL I have seen other posts recently about this same issue, but have not found a fix yet. I downloaded version 1.3 and when I try to run it for the first time, when asked if I want to install the flac, shn, and md5 tools, I click Yes. Next I enter my administrator level password (for the account that I am currently logged into) and it tells me it is incorrect. I have even tried changing the password on my account to see if this new password would work to no avail. Any hints?
