I can now close it with "quitting" when i hit the "X" which is awesome i dont have to minimize anymore. It now has voice call!!! its faster and the sounds are quite unique

Well done guys!!!

R33C3  Yes i understand your point.. but some people are just that lazy or are so organized that they really only want one client that does all. More people use MSN and aim then skype, but i completely agree with you.

I dont understand why they cannot get video support in microsoft messenger... its starting to annoy me :@

AARGL  Well, reading all those bad reviews, I must say that if you use aMSN as a simple messenger (no video), it's more enjoyable than the original MSN.

But I wonder why bother having trouble with video functions on anything using msn network when Skype works so great on any platform?

The perfect solution I've chosen long ago and that I install for friends asking me: Use aMSN for messaging and Skype for video, it's so easy!

GERMANO60  This second beta of incoming 0.98 dramatically increase the responsiveness of the application (I'm on a G5 iMac with OS X 10.5.3).

Still there's one systematic bug, but with a work-around. At the first connection after launching the application I get an error message, I click on "Ignore" then the program goes on but the connection to MSN doesn't establish. The work-around is: quit aMSN and relaunch it again. The connection this time works. This is the reason for my very personal rating 3 stars on stability.

Very good is the capability to access the personal MSN Spaces contents directly from the contact list. Still missing the audio, but for the rest this beta release finally rocks although it's not yet native Cocoa.

Keep up the very good job, men!

MATIEMAN  it did crash a few times when i first downloaded it, but it seems to only have crashed when i lost my internet connection.

I downloaded v0.98 and it seems to be more stable, it hasnt crashed at all on me yet, you can find it on the website.

the main reason that I use it is because it is the only version of msn messenger that supports video.

its not the best msn messenger for mac but it is the only one that supports video.

SIMONM  aMSN has gone downhill! It seems the latest version is considerably less stable than the last time I tried it a year ago! It crashes whenever you select the Help menu item (done by accident sometimes) is sluggish isn't sending authorisation notifications when adding a contact. It's clearly a bad port of a PC program, which is disappointing because it's the only option for video chat with MSN contacts on the Mac at present.

DODGER  With regards to aMSN being the 'only' IM that supports webcam with msn users, there is another: Mercury Messenger( v1.9). I've had the same problems as the above with aMSN and so I'm using mercury for the moment while waiting for aMSN to put things right.

One point with Mercury - the webcam (isight) tended to crash occasionally. Go to Options, global settings, webcam settings and then lower the 'send interval' figure.

Hope this helps.

::MILE::  It's really a shame that so many people (yeah, mostly Windows users) are so focussed on MSN as their primary IM and thus force so many others to use it as well...!

While this app is generally better (albeit uglier) and has more features than the original client from M$ it still has lots of problems...! First of all for some reason it takes like forever to launch...!? Then it places that stupid downloads folder on my Desktop, even though I have changed that setting in the prefs countless times...aaargh...!

The (German) localization has several errors, the GUI gets messed up occasionally, video -- although it generally works -- seems to bring down the app occasionally and the whole thing has crashed on me numerous times...

Unfortunately the ones of us who happen to have friends, colleagues and family who don't know better will have to put up with all this, since there are real alternatives around...and as long as there are several major IM systems out there, there will always be need for a good multimessenger that covers it all...! But that will probably always stay wishful thinking...

(Don't start with Adium or the resurrected Proteus now, or the few options that iChat has in that area -- non of that really covers it as good as is necessary...)

AXELFOO  Using Leopard/Safari, aMSN is given a confounding extension: .dmg.bzip2. Since it is not a real bzip2 file, double-clicking it actually creates an archive (not what you want). Just remove the bzip2 extension and then you can mount the dmg.

MOGWAI1983  hmm just tried 97RC1 and it is a VAST improvement over the previous versions ...

It seems to be hovering around 5% cpu use while idle and does stutter a bit when opening new chat windows but the interface is actually pretty good now and it doesn't seem to have the same ridiculous ram consumption that it used to. Webcam support is pretty good too. I must admit to be rather suprised by how much better it is than previous versions. Still nowhere near perfect of course but it is actually useable now. A good release candidate I think.

But personally i would like to be able to see both my buddy icon and my friends buddy icon at the same time. You know, in the same window. Like on the PC version.

Otherwise, i love it.

It's stupid that microsoft make their PC version great and their Mac version rubbish :-(

JCQ  How old are the guys who develop this project? 13? They keep adding all kind of worthless features that can only appeal to teenagers, but do not fixes the incredible amount of bugs that this software has.

If they are able to implement webcam support, etc., why can they add something as simple as keyboard shortcuts to close windows, logout and other frequent commands?

And it seems to me like the interface is alive. Windows appear wherever and however they want. I am not even able to see my contacts list correctly.

It might be cool to change the color of your nickname or add the name of the song you are playing to it. But what's the point if the program is not able to perform the most basic functions properly?

I gave a try to this version (0.95b) because someone told me that it works better than the previous one. But after a few minutes I decided to stick to Adium.

I recommend the developers to stop adding so many trivial functions and improve the basic ones and get ride of the bugs. Finally update the documentation for the user.

SHUM STRA  I think you misunderstood what he wrote. It wasn't a feature request, but an existing feature, which he pointed out as "might being cool" but worthless.

Microsoft's MSN Messenger for Windows is filled with worthless and stupid features, and as a result, this Messenger-for-Windows-lookalike is filled with those same features.

For Mac users not giving a damn about all those 'stupid-teenagers-might-think-its-cool-so-lets-implement-it' features, there's Proteus and Adium. The closest Windows users get is Trillian, which, IMO, isn't quite as nice as Proteus (but very good for a Windows app).

ANONYMOUS  I cannot send cam or view cam at all... Using OSX.4.1. I was so excited by the prospect. My REAL question is why has Microsoft let go of MSN for Macintosh... is it a request by Apple to push iCHAT ??! I mean what is the political reason behind this weird glitch ??? It gets tiring explaining to PC people that we cannot use cam with MSN. Answer is often.. "well get a real computer, get a PC". This MSN/cam issue is a problem that single-handedly can harm Apple a lot for people who don't look any further. I find that veeeeeeeeery sad and pathetic. Can't Apple do smthg... make iCHAT MSN compatible for example...???! Show the world Apple really can adapt to everything ??!!!!

ANONYMOUS  "make iCHAT MSN compatible for example"

If Microsoft would allow this to occur, Apple would do it. Microsoft owns the rights to their instant messaging system and the code required to access and use it.

You know, QuickTime can't play .wmv files, because those are Microsoft's proprietary filetypes. Same kind of deal, Apple can't do anything because Microsoft won't allow it.

Apple could 'reverse engineer' solutions but then they'd be hauled into court by Microsoft faster than you can spit.

JORGE  I also use 10.4.1 and have NO problems with MSN Webcam in aMSN 0.95-H even though its still a beta.

I think you have connection issues.

If you do not have direct connection to the internet (i.e. you use a router, airport, or the like) then you need to map the MSN ports to your specific computer IP.

I can't give you a step by step here, but I think you'll find what you're looking for in the aMSN forums (link which you can get by first going to the aMSN developer site, link which in turn can be found here in macupdate).

DARA  This is by far the best MSN client out there. Those who go with azereus or fire are using it because they have many accounts and want to be on them at the same time. Most people, want a good MSN client that can compete feature wise with MSN7 and still have that classic MSN 4 (for OSX) aqua look. This is the only client that is able to do that. The software works well and supports group chats, which clients like adium or fire don't do properly.

Although the amsn team did do a good job removing glib and glib2 dependancy from libmimic so they could self contain the lib in amsn package as opposed to making users install glib glib2 and libmimic and xcode like the earlier amsn cvs entries did

PATANISCA  Negative side:

- Horrible user interface

- No shortcuts to be seen

- Extremely limited skin system

- Most confusing preference panel I have ever seen

- Preference panel has bugs (e.g. option "Enable receiving Display Pictures from other users" is never saved has on)

Positive side:

- Many features

- Useful plugins

I think that video conference is not a priority in amsn's case: a major rewrite of the UI would make it the best msn cliente around, and also pleasant to use...

JEROME GAGNON-VOYER  Yep...read the readme, we are far away from Java. TCL-TK. And if you read a little bit more, you could learn that's a port from a linux application. That's why the interface is not so good.

If you want to see this application in objective-c you better start now to code because there are 36470 lines of code ;-)

BTW about the interface, try the MSN 4 skin. It's a lot better.

- it uses much less cpu

- it suports avatar

- much more preferences

- and it has less bugs then the microsoft msn client

- (the next version will have voice chat and videoconference)

the only thing that laks in this app, is the preferences system.

MEEKS  When you say it's take a less CPU. may be you did'nt notice the "Wish Shell" process.. How much Cpu it's take.

Because it's run on top of Tcl/Tk.. almost all the CPU is used by Tcl/Tk interpreter. It's not too bad on my G4 1.25Ghz.. but on My ibook G3 366Mhz, the "Wish Shell" take more than 30% of the CPU.

WILMER VAN DER GAAST  I know that MS MSN is bloated, but aMSN is written in Tcl/Tk, so stating that the program works efficiently is a very very very daring statement, and very likely to be a big lie.

Also, if they're going to implement support for voice- and video chats, I wonder how many G5 CPU's I will need to decode those data streams using a scripted program. Also, can you tell where you read that the next version will have them already?

S_KALB  try it. you won't be dissapointed. many ways to customize. even in a less official way.

I mean for example if you don't like 100% of a skin, you can modify them by opening the package contents (contents>resources>scripts>skins), everything should work ok as long as the setting.xml file and the smileys folder keeps together.

e.g. I want one that look like MSN 4, but the MSN4 smileys are all static. not animated. what I did is taking the setting.xml + smileys folder from the MSN (yes, just "MSN") folder and put it in the MSN4 one. oh, animated smileys now!

also if you want to put your own way of writing as language, check out contents>recources>scripts>lang and modify the phrases in one of the language (langen = english).

idem for the app's icon (contents>recources>Wish.icns), the user pics, the used images for the UI, the sounds, etc... but maybe make a backup before ;-)

WWW.ELECTRONICHOLAS.COM  I'm sorry but am I the only one who still prefers Microsoft MSN, simply because it isn't full of bugs? Yes aMSN has the features the useless Microsoft version should have, but after using it for 15 minutes I find myself frustrated by endless poor GUI layouts, random textboxes floating about for no reason, and disappearing menus.

Does noone else have the same, low quality experience with aMSN? Until these are all fixed, and aMSN starts to look like a proffessional app I will continue using Microsoft, which as everyone agrees lacks everything but a well programmed GUI...

Sad, isn't it?

MARK JONES  Miles better than the official Mac MSN. This one doesn't sign you out every 15 mins, you can see peoples MSN pics and more emoticons display properly. Only downside is you can't just pull contacts to the trash to delete them. The menu thing with all the contacts in the preferences looks terribly complicated and I can't work out how to delete a contact! Thats the only thing that is easeier to do on the official MSN. Oh it also tells you when people just click on your name and don't even say anything which is useful for seeing who isn't talking to ya!

This is GRAND! No webcam tho, STILL, hey ho. No one with a Mac would want to use the offical MSN after using this. This is the best MSN on a MAC!

WILLED  Good work - only qualms are interface bugs, eg: main window not remembering its position; windows opening almost entirely off-screen; notification windows not always turning up on top of other apps; Command-H and Command M not working (really annoying). This sounds like a lot of problems, but the program does work very well - the actual chatting side of it is faster (on my iBook 500) than the MS client, and supports more features. What more could you ask for? Well:...

WORKING...  REPAIR PERMISSIONS NOW!!!!!!!!!!

Man!!! The ImageMagick (or whatever its name is) wreaks havoc on darwin!!

Ok, let me elaborate...

I didn't notice anything wrong with my Mac until I ran my rutinely scheduled Disk Utilty Repair Permissions today in the morning... Whoa!! I have to admit I was almost giddy watching all the things that appeared, I didn't understand even the commas hahahahaha... Anyway, everything is back to normal, and if that's not enough, aMSN works even better than before...
