STEVEN GOODHEART  Yet another terrific app from Yellow Mug Software. My Microsoft Intellitype keyboard just went on the fritz, and I really missed being able to hit a button on the keyboard to control iTunes, or switch to it, but with SizzlingKeys, I'm doing things just as fast, plus I have even more control over what happens in iTunes, from anywhere. The Yellow Mug Software Bundle was such a good deal I couldn't pass it up, and the extra Pro features for SizzlingKeys are just icing on the cake. Highly recommended!

CAWAS  Very nice little app that should even be built in the System Preferences in Leopard (Mac OS 10.5).

I'm missing few things:

- changing shortcut for brightness display

- saving customized preferences to somehow export in another machine (keep in sync)... although this should work together with some other app instead of trying to built it in.

- Open source! I'm trying for quite some time to know how this is done, and I'd love just to know how it's done, and why did I need a software to get it done. But I guess for this item I'll have to keep investing on my research.

Other than that, does pretty much everything I wanted to and couldn't do with keyboard preferences. Specially nice "Floater" feature. You should sell this to apple integrate into snow leopard or maybe the next OS. :P

STEPHEN WASHBURN  Excellent application... it has a relatively straightforward purpose... to bring keyboard controls to iTunes for those of us that don't have one of the new aluminum keyboards and this application does it very well. Additionally the display boxes showing the album artwork and information of the playing track is very nicely done, and the free version (which I have used extensively until recently when I upgraded to the paid version to support the develoepr) works very well. I have been impressed by the level of updates done to the application and the level of functionality provided in the free version.

Top notch developer, top notch application... keep it up!

FREDERICO  SizzlingKeys 3.3.1 is darn near perfect. It doesn't cram in all the features that other iTunes managers do (and don't believe for a moment it doesn't have plenty!) but that's part of what makes it great. Its Floater is the prettiest, most elegant, most reliable, responsive and CPU-friendly one of them all.

The ease in which you can set nearly all the useful keystrokes most users ever need to control iTunes (and more!) and stay productive in their primary tasks is a tribute to the developer's sense of what makes for a good Mac product. The newer features, such as Select Playlist and Find Song were welcome surprises to a longtime user; I don't know how long they were hiding in there while I have been using my own clunky AppleScripts with Growl an GeekTool to do the same.

Perhaps to the developer's discredit, is that he gives away for free far more than he should. The result, I would guess, is thousands of super-satisfied users who never cough up the measly five bucks for this gem of a program, and perhaps keeps the developer from adding more features, some of them desperately overdue, such as support for half-star ratings.

The developer might argue that one can get free or paid support for at least assigning half-stars from a plethora of other sources, but that the Floater still doesn't display them is baffling to me; we've had them available in iTunes (via hack only since iTunes 8?) for more than a couple of years now. iTunes has always supported numerical rating values (0-100), and it's time for SK to catch up.

I'd also like to see support for display of Lyrics, and support to display more song tags, such as Composer (for classical and Jazz listening), Year, Genre (and a hot key to correct on the fly), BPM, Duration, Time Elapsed/Remaining, Comments, and more for the Floater.

It would also be nice if you could toggle the Floater size (and position) and Album Artwork display on the fly, as well.

But don't let these feature requests make you think that there isn't plenty of power already in SK. If you haven't already downloaded and started using it for free, you're missing out on the party for no good reason.

I have no use for the few features Yellow Mug reserves for its SK Pro users. But anyone who makes use of more than just the basic play/pause/next/etc. controls, especially if you use the Floater or the ratings, and doesn't kick out the fiver YM asks for to unlock the six out of more than thirty available controls, should be ashamed of themselves.

I am ashamed of myself, honestly; I haven't purchased a license in a few years, and I just got around to ordering a Family Pack (only because it gave a couple more bucks to Yellow Mug), for the ridiculously low price of $6.95 for five seats; and I plan to buy another family pack for home when I return. I use it on more than one machine, and I probably should buy a Pro license for at least my two primary machines, that's for sure, in spite of the fact I don't and won't use the Pro features.

Frankly, I wouldn't mind at all paying an annual subscription fee to make sure it at least stays functional and bug free as Mac OS X evolves, and I would gladly pay more if it keeps giving me new and useful tools.

I'd like to give SK 3.3.1 five stars, but as much as I rely on it, I have to penalize its own lack of support for the same feature by at least a half star. So, like SK, even though I am granting 4.5 stars, this review will only display 4.

STR1F3  This is an unbelievable app! It is by far the best iTunes controller. It gives you control over every imaginable shortcut to iTunes and system shortcuts like screen lock, system volume and others. The only flaw that I see is a shortcut to show lyrics and if possible, a shortcut to iTunes visualizations. Otherwise it would be perfect.

For those that want lyrics fetched go here: http://dougscripts.com/itunes/

iI is an AppleScript that uses lyricswiki just like gimmesometune and you don't have to play the song to get the lyrics. You can also do a batch of songs at once.

Please add show lyrics support.

CAFEINE  Sizzling Keys functionality should come with mac os x natively... I am designing webpages and handle multiple programs such Dreamweaver, photoshop, safari, firefox all open the same time. BUSHBABYWAS  Extremely clear and simple to set up through a pane in System Preferences, and highly customisable. Displays album art reliably and It does everything all the many myriad other iTunes controllers do, but seems to be more reliable and stable. Let's you rate the currently playing song using a keyboard shortcut - without this I doubt I would ever rate my tracks.

The closest competitor for ease of use, features and stability seems to be the excellent GimmeSomeTune (http://www.macupdate.com/reviews.php?id=20412), but I think Sizzling Key's elegant pop-up notification looks a lot better than GimmeSomeTune's more cluttered, bezelled one. And Sizzling Keys has very slick playlist and search pop-ups, though to be honest I find switching to iTunes using the provided keyboard shortcut easier.

I would like to request, however, two features, one small, one a bit more ambitious. GimmeSomeTune has both.

a) the ability to only start when iTunes does, rather than upon system startup would be a boon. I realise this would require a small watcher daemon, but I still think it would be worth it. It's annoying to accidentally start iTunes by unintentionally pressing one of Sizzling Keys' keyboard shortcuts.

b) The killer feature, which would stop me switching to GimmeSomeTune, would be the ability to fetch lyrics for the playing song and display in a similar transparent window.

GimmeSomeTune's automatic search seems to work far more quickly and fetch many more lyrics than other similar applications, so implementation would v. good to top it. But it would make Sizzling Keys by far the best iTunes controller available.

Here's hoping.

Anyway, excellent app. This and GimmeSomeTune are the ones to get if you want an unobtrusive, powerful but easy to use iTunes controller.

MACERICG  To the developers:

Any chance of making SizzlingKeys compatible with QTtunes (http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/27762)?

Since iTunes is not compatible with streaming Windows Media/asx, I was forced to use the QuickTime browser for my radio stations. Now I use QTtunes and it works great -- but miss the SizzlingKeys control.

Combine your two great apps and you've got a real one-two punch winner.

JAZZADDICT  I just went to search around to see what other itunes controllers are out there. There were a lot. Some were well acclaimed. Some of them were pretty good. Despite the fact that some of them cost more than twice as much as SizzilingKeys and had some cool fancy features, I hurried back to Sizzling Keys real quick. It's a nice app for a fair price. Not to to mention I think it's the only .app I saw where you can move the floater with the mouse. That's killer.

RYAN M  I think this program is tops and I have used it for years. The free version does plenty, but I decided to support the developer and go Pro. For $7 for a family pack how can you not? Even if your Mac has built in media keys, this gives you the ability to use a keyboard shortcut to go to login screen (AKA Locking your screen) and adds a lovely floater when tracks switch.

SOOB  For me, it's all about keyboard access and screen real estate. I've been using third-party iTunes controllers since pre-OS X days and the one thing my preferred apps have had in common is the ability to control iTunes using hotkeys and an absence menu bar icons or palettes or Dock badges or what have you taking up my screen when I don't need it.

SizzlingKeys has all this in spades. And after using the free version for a couple years -- extremely capable as is -- I gladly paid the small registration fee for the "Pro" features.

JRBQ  One of the reasons that there are so many review of this software may be that the company prompts registrants to write a review.

That said, as you can tell, many of us who use this software like it. The free version is good enough that I felt grateful enough to pay the $5 registration fee. That was two years ago for a previous version 1.6.4-- so you can see they don't ask for more money for an upgrade.

LUCKY8  It's what I use. Of all the alternatives out there - and I've tried many - I always come back to SizzlingKeys.

The only thing I'm not entirely pleased with, is the lacking configurability of the floating window with its art display - I'd like more text options (to add composer, for instance), as well as the ability make the image much larger. A separate lyrics window with its own hotkey would be neat too!

Oh, and I just bought the entire Yellow Mug bundle - good value, great apps.

COLIN  Simply an excellent little extension to iTunes, it allows you to quickly search, has a non-intrusive pop-up to notify you of what you're listening to, and a wide variety of keyboard shortcuts.

I would highly suggest this for anyone on a MacBook or PowerBook, it's far more efficient than using iTunes itself. As well, one is generally using a lot more keyboard shortcuts when on the go anyhow.

Oh, and it's inexpensive to boot!

BRUCE_Y  Just started using SizzlingKeys 302. (I had used an earlier 1.x version on my last Mac, but hadn't gotten around to installing this onto the Tiger yet.)

Pretty cool. Puts a translucent, resizable, re-positionable display on desktop. Then use keyboard to control iTunes. The keys cover all of the mini-iTunes controls, plus more:

- can set star rating from hot-key

- can display and jump to a playlist

- can search for songs

- and from the search, can create a to-be-played list from that - sweet (it creates a special SizzlingKeys playlist. A little bit like an iPod on-the-go playlist).

- Plus it displays the album art if your songs have art in them.

All in all pretty cool application.

(Plus the Pro version adds a couple of neat controls)

JRBQ  It's often noted that reviews are often negative because satisfied people don't post. I'm not negating the problems people may have noted, but I've had no problems with Sizzling Keys Pro (or whatever they call the $5 upgrade).

I've used it w/ iTunes 6.02 on OS 10.3.9 on an iBook, and on OS 6.03 on OS 10.4.4 and 10.4.5 on an iBook.

I've gotten my $5 worth by being able to rate songs without having to switch into itunes and aim the mouse at the star rating-- instead I use keyboard shortcuts. I can also change volume, advance songs, move ahead 40 seconds in a song, mute Itunes and a few other things. Much of this is also available in the free version.

My only complaint? I wish the website was more informative-- as it is you have to play with it to learn it and get price info.

I guess you could argue that it's now shareware, but in the default mode it still does everything the original version did, and more (lots more), and he's still updating the free features as well as the "pro" ones... so it's not like he's added restrictions to it. But lately, I tend to use Synergy more (which I also bought), because it can be used with growl.

I'd really love it if Sizzlingkeys registered a Growl plugin to use its notification system.

ANONYMOUS  I would like to see an option to choose what gets displayed in the

Floater (example: Artist - Title). Also, the floater is so big because

it is formatted kinda spread out, I think anyway. The song title font

size could be the same size as the artist and album. There is another

little itunes controller out there called FastTunes that has an ideal

display window that pops up, but it can't be moved around on the

desktop or changed in regards to opacity and color. However, I really

like what has been included in SizzlingKeys. I LOVE being able to use

my F10 F11 and F12 keys to control previous, next and play/pause.

WONDERFUL!!!

Thanks

PABLO  Excellent iTunes controller, works great!!

A little request: the floater could show the length of the song, just that...

Keep the good work!

PETER DA SILVA  Search is cool.

Search would be cooler if you could "add to party shuffle" or "play next in party shuffle" the song(s) you find.

THRASS  Without a doubt the best iTunes controller I've come across. Clean and uncluttered. The only thing I'd wish for: a floater window that adjusts its size according to its content (many of my interpret tags don't fit).

ANONYMOUS  Yeh, and I want to make the floateer smaller and less conspicuous so it doesn't get in my way, and I want a "launch screen saver" key. Otherwise it's dang near perfect.

Perfect would be if it let me launch arbitrary scripts on keystrokes, then I could replace half my keyboard hacks with Sizzling Keys For Everything.

YELLOW MUG SOFTWARE  To Bussi Baer:

There is no way SizzlingKeys4iTunes could have caused any of the problems you stated.

The app doesn't interact with Safari, it cannot possibly cause it to crash. Likewise, it cannot cause your computer to stop reminding you that your battery is empty.

If you still think the problems are related to SizzlingKeys4iTunes, please contact us at info@yellowmug.com.

Thanks.

JAY TEO  While similar, x-tunes has a different philosophy than SizzlingKeys4iTunes. I don't think you can compare the two directly.

Which is better for you really depends on what you're looking for. SizzlingKeys4iTunes gives you direct control with a single key stroke (or key combo). X-tunes brings up a user interface which you then click on with your mouse.

ANONYMOUS  This is an almost perfect replacement for the now-defunct PTHiTunesNotifier. All it needs are two features. 1) Have the floating window come up automatically when iTunes changes tracks, and 2) put in hot keys to increase/decrease the rating, instead of just assigning stars.

CRAZYSWEDISHGUY  I haven't tried SizzlingKeys4iTunes but I know Butler lets you control iTunes quite easily (except for the library search which unlike quicksilver it doesn't yet have!!!! I'm waiting for it, because Butler is undeniably my favorite app on this website) in addition to all the other things it lets you do. Why use several apps when a single one can do it all?

MILL  I downloaded this pane for my work computer and found myself trying to do the same keyboard board combos at home with no avail. So after several weeks of procrastinating, I finally installed it.

I had to look through all the other similar apps/addons, and besides this being a free app, it's the right size too for my little Clamshell iBook running 10.3.3.

I love the easy install for either OS X version. The re-assigning of key combos is simple, to the point, and works flawlessly.

One item that might be a good option is to have a key comand that brings up the current playing song title and artist.

Keep up the great work!

ANONYMOUS  X-Tunes is my preferred itunes conrtoller. It does the same as this app but adds more useful functionality to the user. When you command for the next tune, a splash screen appears with the name of the song (you control the opacity and length of time the window appears). If you want to hear the current selection again, X-Tunes will return to start of the tune, not like sizzlingkeys, that plays previous tune. Plus it is also free!

MACBUDDY  I was looking to see if iTunes Tools had been updated last night, or if any new or re-newed - but free, (I'm broke right now) - iTunes controllers have become available, that I'd like to try/re-try.

This works very nicely. Thanks.

The only 'missing feature' I can think of - that might be useful - would be to 'search' forward/backward through a song. Don't know if that would be possible, tho'.

Anyway, thanks again,

JONATHAN GARDNER  This is the kind of app that makes using a computer easier and more fun - without any hassle or unnecessary flufff. I love the simplicity of being able to access the basic iTunes controls at any time without having to open a window or switch out of an open app. Very elegant! Works as advertised. The only reason I gave this a 4 under stability is because I haven't yet used it long enough to know if it has any potential conflicts. None so far. Kudos to the author!

IBLINK  Perfect! This is exactly what I have been looking for. I left a request in a forum for something like this, not sure if that is a coincidence or not. But I don't care. I have tried Synergy, which isn't free. All I wanted were some universal keys to control iTunes. Yes, Synergy has this but it also has a lot of other crap I don't want (album covers). I have also tried X-Tunes but you need to punch in the keys to make a window appear before using the hot keys. Awsome! Thank a bunch for this lovely preference pane. :-)
