GAMEGOLDIES Unreal Tournament 2004 will remind you how satisfying explosive, extremely fast action gaming can be. The smooth engine and core gameplay inherited from Unreal make a great foundation, and the onslaught and assault modes take the whole package up another notch. And, to help you come to grips with a multiplayer world increasingly focused on teamplay, the voice chat features can make any team game better by facilitating real tactical coordination. Then, just when (or if) you start to tire of all the official maps (and combinations of maps with the library of preset mutators), there are community tools to make creating and installing custom content as straightforward as possible. No other multiplayer-focused action game has this much to offer. (Version 3369-2)

GIGANTOR I've been playing the demo version of UT2004 for about 2 weeks and have found it to be very entertaining. I had no problem downloading it, nor any trouble with launching the file after unstuffing. I'm running a new eMac, G4, 768M Ram, and other than that no real upgrades to the system. Demo ran great right after dl. Only problem I've had is when I try to use the mic. Any time I try this it shuts down the game and returns me to the desktop. Other than that, the graphics run smoothly, there's no lag (well, a little on some internet games but this is server based), and the learning curve is not too hard. Overall a great game which I look forward to picking up soon. Only other problem is that I can currently not connect to any internet servers through the demo as of 09/24/04. (Version 3323)

ANONYMOUS I actually experienced a LOT of servers disconnecting me because come cheat warner (Anti TCC) identified me as a cheater (and still does) - although I never did install anything but the official updates. From another posting I got the impression, that the reason is that the servers have not been updated to the most recent version, or that Anti TCC worked according to "If I don't know it, it's a cheat". Actually, this makes UT2004 in my eyes not very recommendable for Mac users... (Version 3323)

HEAVYBOOTS Actually, contrary to what Ravi is saying, I would contend that Unreal Tournament 2004 is much more reminiscent of UT99 and enjoys an improved sense of "fun" for both beginners and experts alike. If you were an extreme fan of the Lightening Gun/Shock Rifle spam combo of UT2003, you may be disappointed with UT2004 however. But if you enjoyed UT99 but *not* UT2003, you should really like UT2004! Definitely my favorite game of the year. (Version 3323)

Unless you've got a gfx card with 128mb+ VRAM then drop the main Texture Quality settings to Normal (or even low). 64mb vram may sound a lot, but it's nothing for todays games :-/ I have the main texture at low and the others at normal. ANONYMOUS Here is something that can help you get a few more Frames Per Second on dual processor machines (a tip from macosxhints): -------------------------- Most Mac gamers know that many games don't support symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) properly. The most notable exception is probably Quake 3, which properly displays the tremendous performance advantage of multiple processors once you edit the .ini file to turn SMP on in the game. Most games, however, experience little or no performance advantage on dual processors due to the way they are programmed (the excuse I've read is "because these games aren't programmed for multiple processors on the PC"). I was disappointed in my performance in Unreal Tournament 2004, despite my system upgrades (Dual 1.3 G4s, Radeon 9800), and was wondering if there was any way to more fully utilize my dual processors. Then I noticed that when flying around a map before starting a match, my frame-rate was perfectly acceptable. As soon as I started the match, however, my frame-rate would plummet. So, I decided that something other than the graphics engine was causing the poor performance. I duplicated the Unreal Tournament 2004 game to a second drive and renamed the copy "Unreal Tournament 2004 Server." Then I started that copy and configured my options as desired and ran it as a Dedicated Server. I then ran my "client" copy and joined my own server under the LAN tab. Amazingly, my frame rates were better. Not a LOT better, but enough better to make a difference. For example, my frame-rates would often plummet into the 12-16 range when playing the first part of the AS-Convoy map running in "instant action" mode. When running as a client to my server, these jump to 15-20 (I'm using the console command "stat fps" to monitor this). This same is true on every map I've tried, and is especially noticeable in those areas where frame rate is lowest. I've been testing this off an on now for several days, thinking that it might just be a placebo effect or something else unreproducible, but it is consistent, and the difference is enough to make the game much more enjoyable. Maps which were effectively unplayable before are now playable, and maps which played poorly now play quite well. The only disadvantage is that you have to administer the server via the web-interface (easy to do, but change the default "web admin" port to something other than the default of 80 or it doesn't work). Also, it increases memory usage and drive access, causing a momentary "hiccup" about two seconds long each time a new map starts. Of course, you could always run the server on a second computer, but often that isn't an ideal situation. ------------------------------ Here is a link to the original article: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040411122149403&query=unreal (Version 3229)

PEEVED Ignore the line about CD/DVD no longer required to play. You STILL need it. And as a matter of fact, Mac users appear to be the proud recipients of even MORE limitations by not allowing you to eject the DVD after the game has started. Looks like they'd rather annoy legitimate paying customers to prevent all those rogue LAN parties from physically moving a disc around between machines to launch games. Come on guys, give me a break. MARK E. Time to clear the air re: update 3186.1 This is an intermediate update, to quickly clear up some more drastic flaws that came to light after it went gold, expect another eventually. This does fix the mp5/player skins and server issues...Yeah!!! This does speed things up, at least for me... For all the moaning about performance, I have a dual 800 (the dual doesn't really make much difference when it applies to this game... It does have a Nvidia GF4Ti, but is otherwise fairly stock w/ 1 GB RAM. On MOST network games w/ patch was seeing frame rates between 30 - 80... WOW. NOte: most of the eye candy is turned down or off. Further note, ynot all options have the same speed penalty...drawing more/new objects is different than asking the machine to draw the objects "nicer" (more detail), so leave weather effects off, world detail low, fog as shallow as can be, etc... some tough to draw maps, rustatorium, and the like, especially w/ heavy # players, dropped into teens... And, on the other side, on easier maps, even when packed was seeing rates go as high as 100. This may be typical for folks with the new hardware, but was a real treat for me... Suggestions: DEFRAG YOUR DRIVE. The "optimizations" that are done when Apple software updates are done are NOT defraging your drive...they may optimize system parts, but there is a drastic difference. and, since people are being subjective here too, I feel that balance of the weapons/play is excellent. The maps have updated classics and great new ones, and the team competitions/goal games are excellent...This is super. If you're looking for an FPS this is IT!!! (Version 3186.1)

PORTHOS Mmmm, interesting, indeed the wheels locking up on the vehicles have been fixed...but thats all I have noticed...two things still not fixed......one being the fact you still cant add a favorite IP address because you need a right click mouse and second being your name does not appear on the numberplate of the hellbender like it does in the PC version. Ok so thats not a major problem but come on....I want the people I run over to know who is their daddy, lol. Still, this patch works fine for me. No problems at all, they even give you a help file with an email address where you can report bugs...better get my ass over there then. I actually installed the PC version on the computers where I work with a couple of mates and over a network and it is sooo funny, just hope the Boss doesent find out!, lol. Hiding in the leaves on the onslaught level while a mate tries to find you with raptor fire is very cool.....untill I missiled his ass. lol (Version 3120.1)

ANONYMOUS Not bad... It's really a big step up from the original UT. Play control, however, is a bit shaky. I think this is mostly because players walk at about 60 mph... Maybe I'm a bit used to Halo. I don't really have any other complaints. (Version 3120.1)

ANONYMOUS Is anyone else ticked off that they're releasing a new version of UT without even having released a proper fully functional copy of UT2003? They released a "fix" which pretty much crippled the game--made it totally unplayable--on servers using custom maps, which was most servers. I wrote the developers and was promised a new fix soon. That was a few months back. I recently wrote another e-mail....and got no response. I guess they figure they already have my money and don't need to respond. Pretty short sighted considering the fact that they don't yet have my money for UT2k4. (Version 3120.1)

PORTHOS Yeah thats a point regarding the mouse compatibility optons.......you cant right click to add an Ip address to your favorites like you can on the pc...I had to borrow my sisters optical usb PC mouse to just add my mates Ip so I could connect to his game.....I hope they sort that out. No way am I buying a new mouse just so I can add an IP. Please sort this out you lovely Unreal People ;) (Version 3120)

`MEX The demo was generally stable, some compatability issues with mice are being raised by many of my friends, but in general its fine. Ive been looking forward to playing a new, inspired game with great graphics, weapon balance, great movement and solid maps. I thaught 2k4 was going to be this game, unfortunatly it wasnt. It is basically the same as 2k3 which in turn was a cheap imitation of UT99. UT99 had the right weapons balance, good fast and fluid movement and excellent maps. Although i like some of the maps within the 2k4 demo they really dont compare to the gameplay genius of UT99 maps like deck16, codex, turbine and the new ones like nitro and voac etc etc. It has the same main flaws that caused the vast majority of the ut2k3 community to die out so i guess this will die pretty quickly also. If you play fps games just for a laugh and a quick frag then this game is pretty good. If you play fps games just for a laugh and a quick frag X10 the fun then UT99 is probably your best bet. If your new to fps i really recommend play UT99 as its probably down to a fiver in price and still one of the main fpsers going strong after 5 years of enthusiastic support.:) (Version 3120)

ANONYMOUS The colors are terribly off on my machine. I've heard that it's an incompatibility with the ATI drivers (one person said, "ATI issue," but that makes it sound like it's ATI's fault that Epic can't get their crap together.) Considering that UT2003 ran well and is a recent release, I was surprised that 2004 would have such problems. I have to agree: the original UT is still where it's at. The newer ones just seem uninspired. I guess the guys at Epic must really look up to the beautiful-yet-empty games from id. (Version 3120)

PORTHOS Unreal 2004 should just be a Bonus Pack rather than an actual game release.....after all it looks EXACTLY the same as 2003. The main differences are the weapons......not only are there more but some look different, I personally prefer the look of the weapons in its predecessor. Add to this the addition of some new modes and Vehicle chaos thrown in. Which is FANTASTIC in the Onslaught mode Regarding Performance, it still looks solid, until you put the multibuffers up in your Unreal ini file, then I noticed there are some moments when the screen goes blank during the Assault Level. I'm sure they will fix this for the proper game. I am currently running a Dual 1.25 Ghz Powermac G4 with 2 gig ram and a Geforce 4 TI 4600. (Version 3120)

It's unplayable on my new 12" PowerBook...pretty decent on a dual 1Ghz...and (of course) gorgeous on a dual 2Ghz G5. Vehicle control takes a little time to get used to, especially if you're used to playing Halo, but the split keyboard / mouse control is necessary in order to control both the vehicle, the camera, AND your gun. ANONYMOUS UT2k4 Demo Review First, a bunch of people confirm the UT2k3 color bug on certain hardware (including mine, X 10.3.2, Radeon 9000). Also there is a problem with the sound system and channel separation. The game itself is quite a bit more demanding than 2k3, especially on the onslaught map with vehicles. The variety of weapons is great, including the spider launcher and AVRil rockets. However, vehicles are a mixed bag. The raptor fighter is awesome, with its homing missiles, and the energy turrets are cool. Problem is handling is inconsistent... the jeep turns with the keyboard (horrible) but the raptor turn with the mouse halo-style. Speaking of halo, the vehicles definitely lack the 'weight' and physics of halo vehicles, for example you must apply thrust to keep up the banshee or it tends to drop by gravity, but the raptor hovers perfectly still. Not bad, but could be much better. (Version 3120)

ANONYMOUS I loved the original Unreal Tournament and was quite dissapointed in UT 2k3. I felt it had a more boring gameplay. After what I had heard UT 2k4 should bring back some of the old gameplay and feeling. Now that I have played this demo for a while I have found out that it has better gameplay than I would have hoped for. The new vehicle system looks and works great, and the long lost assoult is back. However I have one really bad thing to say about this game. It is really bad optimised. The so called system requirements is a laughable joke. I have a new G4 12" PB running on one GHz, and I would not say I would think this game would rock on that computer, but I would at least believe that with all the graphics turned all down and 640x480 resolution it would be more or less playable. It is in reality not. It is almost a nightmare... The game is so slow, and my framerate is never above 8 even when nothing is happening. So MacSoft, I think you should sit down and work very hard to optimize this code so your system requirements should actually sound true in some way. But by all means if you have a dual 2GHz G5 with Radeon 9800pro this is a really great game. (Version 2004)

ANONYMOUS MacSoft doesn't even try to optimize code for MacOS X. All they do is port the game and try and make it bug free enough to be acceptable. In my opinion they provide the average consumer with just enough. They don't go that extra step for the Macintosh community. By not bothering to optimize code for us they provide the M$ user with a far better product. Look at any fps game. Mac's don't run slower because of video or other system performance, in fact they should run faster. The code is just never optimized for these ported games. (Version 3120.1)
