KOSOVAR1 Version 4.5.3 "improvements:" >List view button updated >Added missing gradient to reflection in Add/Edit panel >Date Added not set for some users This called an update? Hardly. This is a free promotion for the developer. Sure, this is a very well conceived program, but don't invite ridicule by rearranging a few pixels, just so you can get extra press for your wares. Do the work and stop playing Limewire. There are plenty of significant improvements that can be offered beyond "Added missing gradient to reflection." (Version 4.5.3)

BRUJI Thanks for your feedback. We focused so much on Snow Leopard compatibility with version 4.5.2 that we missed two bugs for that update, the gradient in the Add/Edit window and the Date Added field. We regularly run a long beta testing period and would have caught these bugs before release. But because of the release of Snow Leopard yesterday we had to shorten our testing period. The version change was necessary so that users who had already upgraded to 4.5.2 would see the new version. Usually for something small like this we wouldn't have done a listing on MacUpdate but the site is great in that it reads our appcast.xml files and knows automatically when there is a new version out. So we don't even have to list an update - MacUpdate does it for us. Of course being on MacUpdate two days in a row is an added bonus for us and all the users who discover a great app. (Version 4.5.3)

STEVE FRAWLEY Great Program. I also synch my catalog with several Macs using DropBox and sync to my iPhone with DVDPedia. I used DVDAttache for a few years and imported most data without having to reenter. I compared quite a few before switching. (Version 4.5.2)

TIAGO I own licenses to both DVDpedia and Bookpedia but have never been able to really use the softwares, because the Info Views are so bad. Delicious Library on the other hand is beautiful to look at (it has a truly designed interface) but it doesn't offer all the functionality of the 'pedias. Oh... How I wish the "Info View" in all these 'pedia apps was not ugly as hell... And yes I tested them all, including every single extra listed in the site... There's not a single one that looks even slightly "designed"... they're just "put together". How hard is it to hire some real and talented designers to create amazing and professional looking templates to make the apps "look" as good as I know they "are"? What good is it to rely on user contributed templates if (apparently) only amateur and/or bad designers seem to give it a try? This is just a comment... I will not post it as a review (with stars) because I really believe these apps ARE good and I really hope they LOOK good in a near future... But still, the lack of proportion, alignment and visual hierarchy to the information, in all these view templates is incredibly low quality... I know taste is a matter of personal opinion, but I truly don't believe ANY good designer can take a look at those templates and not be disgusted. (Version 4.4.3)

BRUJI Thanks for your feedback. Of course we're sad to hear that you deem the info view templates lacking but fortunately the info view is based on HTML which means it is fully customizable. You can edit any of the existing templates to fit your style or you can write your own from scratch. Take a look at the DVDpedia Help file under 'Working with DVDpedia > Customizing info view templates' for more information about that. More importantly we'd love it if you were to share your amazing templates with the rest of the Pedia community. Just send them to us and we'll put them up on the Extras page for download and we could even update our current included templates. If your are not HTML savvy a design would also be appreciated as it would allow us to see what you have in mind. We're always working on improving the Pedias, including the templates, and we love getting input from our users. (Version 4.4.3)

XENOPHILE Heh, I have the opposite opinion of DVDpedia. I love the info view, it's minimalist design is easy to read and devoid of distractions. What initially drew me to DVDpedia was it's GUI and design. Delicious Library? Ugly. WTF is up with the fake wood? And the interface is an abomination, requiring the user to mouse to and fro across the entire app window for tasks that are routinely grouped together. The info window is cramped into a tall, narrow space. What I'd like to know most is, WTF came up with the simulated wood interface, and do they cover their house, car, etc with fake wood panels to be stylish? (Version 4.5.1)
| Aug 13 2009 |
STEFANK60 agree with Xenophile. pedia looks great and has fab functionality. Delicious looks anything but - I also detest the fake wood and the whole look is os cheesy and crass - it turns my stomach. (Version 4.5.1)

KBEAT I've got a huge collection of DVDs and Video Games, and have long wanted a first class library management tool. I've tired FileMaker, web based utilities, Delicious Library, and a few lesser known shareware programs, and I can say this is hands down the best of the bunch. It's easy to use, feature rich, very snappy even with large collections, and takes full advantage of Leopard's features. Heck, with the cover flow feature in the finder, I rarely have to open it other than to add new titles. It even has a nice iPhone companion app. I wish they offered an "all in one" version of the pedia apps, but that's really the only complaint I have, and that's not really a complaint. If you're looking to manage your collection of DVDs, Games, Books, or CDs on a Mac, the Pedia apps are the best tools for the job. (Version 4.4.1)

BRUJI The main reason the programs are separate is because we want them to be good at what they do - if you have large collections then putting them all together into one application will mean a slower program and less specialized features. It also allows us to keep the price low for users who are only interested in one application. (And for those interested in more we offer bundle discounts.) Having said that though, the Pedia programs do have some integration between them. You can link a Bookpedia book to a DVDpedia movie, for example. Sure, you're using two programs but clicking on the link will take you directly to the other program with the related entry highlighted. Alternatively, there's also the Amazonpedia widget or Spotlight which allow you to search all your Pedia libraries at once (as well as Amazon with the widget) so you don't have to have all the programs running just to check for an entry. (Version 4.2.1)
| Jul 6 2008 |
TOURNESOL No thanks. I like the apps being separate. I only want to catalog my DVD's and not anything else. What the author could do was to make some toolbar buttons for each app that will appear automatically when a user own more than one type of pedia from Brunji. That way you could switch easily between the apps. (Version 4.3)

UBUNTUKING Very good cataloging program. I actually prefer this one to delicious library for a couple of reasons: it starts faster and also the program is responsive, the library cache for the images is pretty small compared to that used by delicious library. While the eye candy is definitely not up to par compared to delicious, the program's functionality is stellar. (Version 3.6)

VANQUISHED A really nice program - even though it's not as attractive to look at as Delicious Library, it's fantastic for use in a home-cinema setup where you want to store all your movies on your hard drive and use this app to start them. Only complaint would be that the information pane would work better if it was positioned to the right of the screen, and the iSight import feature doesn't work very well. Other than this, a fantastic app! (Version 3.6)

SILICONADDICT I own a C2DMBP. Scanner feature worked once. I can't get it to scan again. I have tried it in brighter conditions, closer to the camera, farther away, at an angle, rebooted, etc. It simply doesn't work anymore, or if it does its twitchy enough that it doesn't work very well. MMUECK This is a really good program with all the features you'll ever need EXCEPT, like the previous poster mentioned, it has zero practical barcode scanning capability with the new computers that have built-in cameras. I ended up having to hook up my firewire capable camcorder to my mac and using that for the video input. Even then you had to work at making it be recognized - I had to give up on autofocus and hold the barcodes at a very specific place to get them to read reliably. At least the developers acknowledge this problem and are supposedly working on it... I also wish the default movie rating would come from IMDB and not Amazon. People who rate stuff on Amazon are usually biased to liking the movie because they purchased it in the first place (hence the ratings always seem higher). IMDB ratings aren't biased in that way and they also have many more votes to average things out. (Version 3.1.3)

RIC ZITO Useless. The iSight scan is crap. Didn't work on any of my DVDs, on my iMac Core Duo. Not one, despite trying many times, moving the barcode around, turning every single light in the room on. You have to hold the barcode far too close to the camera to fill the alloted space (it's very difficult to hold it perfectly straight) and thus the image of the barcode gets blurred. Not one single DVD was recognised. This was with a latest-generation built-in iSight. Delicious Library recognised them *all* within a second of holding them up to the camera, even at an angle, and considerably further away. DVDPedia may have a nice, iTunes-like GUI, but if I have to manually load my 450 DVDs, forget it. Especially when there are other apps around that do the job better. I'm sorry, it isn't worth the hassle IMHO. (Version 3.1)

BRUJI We are still working on revising our code for the new built-in iSights. Because they are so small, they lack a focus and that's something our code was relying on in the image recognition. But hopefully we'll be able to crack the problem soon and users with built-in iSights will be able to scan their DVDs again.

IKARI I really like this app. However, i'd love to be able to use on my TV, but the fonts are too small to read. If text could be made bigger and smaller (through a slider) that would be awesome. IDJSTER The updated features make this version a must-have. If you don't have it yet, buy DVDPedia. In fact, buy all the pedias you need (CD, Book and Game). I was a committed Readerware user for DVDs, CDs and books. When I started using the comparable pedia apps I couldn't believe what I was missing. The ability to generate .html pages, with graphics, easily is one big feature - the reporting options are great. It has better features in the advanced fields. Bruji has come a long way in making their automatic web search feature as good as the Readerware apps. This, and the other pedias, are really sweet apps if you want a database in which to keep track of your collections, and at a really wonderful price! Highly recommended! (Version 3.0.2)

CONOR DEARDEN We have users with 1500 DVD entries, and the program runs very well. I myself have tested up to 3000 DVDs but not in everyday use, just sorting speeds, loading times, etc and it performs very well. The new cover image view can be sluggish with incorrect settings, depending on your computer you should adjust the image size. The bigger the images and the fewer images on screen at a time the better, that is the nature of images. The program is developed and tested on a 1.3 Ghz G4 with 512 RAM, and this more than sufficient, you have an even better computer, you lucky man, so there must be something else going on. DVD COLLECTOR DVDpedia is still my favorite and allthough the configurable custom fields are nice, a lot of extra's could be added. What I would like to do though, is challenge the users of DVDpedia to come up with more interesting templates, using all available options, including interactive pages with JavaScript and search options. This would give the developers a chance to concentrate on the rest and perhaps encourage them to add a feature to use WEBTEMPLATES, templates that are not on your local disk, but in an online library, which can be updated without having to remove the older ones. This could also work for the other pediae... (Version 1.6)

The interface is clean and simple, the features are extensive, and the developers are very responsive to feature requests and bug fixes. Owning this software is the IDEAL shareware model and how other shareware programmers should interact with their users in developing their product. OZZPOT Having tried just about every application of this sort for OSX, I can say that this is easily the best. The very iTunes-like interface is attractive, intuitive, familiar and very well executed. This is genuinely iTunes for your DVD collection. Unlike iTunes, it is written entirely in Cocoa, and as such, theme-friendly for GUI nuts like me. The interface is customizable, and able to display as little or as much information as you like. Typically, the main window displays basic info such as title, genre and rating, and a slide-out drawer caters for the rest, including such info as full cast, release dates, and even plot summary! The search system wisely combines information from both IMDb and Amazon to retrieve the most accurate results. A common flaw of other similar applications is that they only use one source or the other, meaning IMDb based results lack information such as price, and often have unwanted artwork such as theatrical posters rather than DVD covers. Similarly, results garnered only from Amazon will lack in-depth information on cast, crew and studio. The devoper has acheived the perfect combination with this search engine. DVDs can be added quickly and effectively, complete with all the information you could ever want. My fellow Europeans will be glad to hear that the preferences are well thought out and thorough, offering many options to default to European standards of Region 2, PAL, plus of course the abililty to retrieve results from Amazon.co.uk rather than .com. For the first time I have been able to add DVD after DVD without worrying about changing the artwork or technical DVD data. There are still a few minor bugs that need to be ironed out however... This may just apply to British prices, but my value statistic in the status bar constantly says -0.00, even though all my DVDs have valid values. Also, even though I have chosen a preference to exclude "wishlist" DVDs from the main library, they still remain there - even after restarting the application. These are minor glitches however, and shouldn't distract from the fact that this app is SLICK, PROFESSIONAL, VERSATILE, AND VERY USER FRIENDLY. Definitely worth $18 of anyone's money. I wouldn't complain if it was $30. (Version 1.4.3)

NICK As an update to the missing entries problem, I can report now that, after having downloaded two or three updates to DVDPedia since the original problem with the missing DVD entries, I haven't experienced any further problems with the deleted entries. This seems to be the perfect program for my needs and it compares favorably with similar programs on the Mac platform. One inconvenience I've noticed is that after typing in the name of a movie with a simple proper name (like the movie "Maurice" for example), I sometimes get several hundred search results while the movie names that are returned don't even contain the name "Maurice." It might take five or 15 minutes to search though all the titles (depending on whether one is using a broadband or dialup connection) to find the entry that matches my movie. Apparently DVDPedia searches through the names of actors, directors, etc. to make matches, not just for movie titles. This may not be a fault of the program though. (Version 1.4.3)

NICK What's going on here? I posted a comment here 2 days ago. I stated that my suspicion that about a third of the 400 movies I own had strangely disappeared from DVDpedia's database through some bug in the program. I checked back tonight and found that my comment had not been posted. Practically all of the 36 reviews of this were unabashedly positive, as if no one had encountered a problem or had a significant criticism. Well I do, and I did, and if someone is filtering these reviews because of content, I expect that this message too will disappear, just like so many of the DVD movie entries I painstakingly inputted and lost. NORA Hi Nick, send me an email with more details about what exactly happened right before you lost part of your DVDpedia database. This is the first time I hear about a problem like this but if you tell me some more details I'll try and fix it asap. And I don't know why your comment wouldn't be posted on Macupdate but I'm sure it had nothing to do with content...

NORA Have you checked out the html export feature? You can even make your own templates if you don't like the ones featured. (Help file explains how to.) We're currently working on reducing the size of the jpeg images for export since those can cause files to become quite big, especially when exporting your entire library.

ANONYMOUS i finally did see that...great idea. I would like to see some kind of user feedback for the database...some of the information is incorrect...perhaps users could submit disc info in the future? (Version 1.3.6)

CONOR Down the road we are thinking of adding a server for DVDpedia users, so that users can maintain a more complete and correct set of data about movies and share, especially useful for foreign countries. (Version 1.3.6)

ANONYMOUS What if there was a NetFlix tool in DVDpedia, as in iTunes with the Music Store? It would allow you to browse the NetFlix site and view your Queue all within DVDpedia, and easily add DVDs you bought after having rented them from NetFlix right into your collection? This could integrate the review system and recommendations into DVDpedia? It seems like it could have some potential value if enough people that were using DVDpedia were NetFlix users. If you think so, please let the developers of DVDpedia know so they can consider it. I would pay for an upgrade with those features! (Version 1.3.4)

JOSH LINDQUIST This program is AWESOME. The interface is beautiful, which makes it a joy to use. Of all of the other similar programs, this easily has the best feature set and best interface. It has served me well and has been worth every cent and much more. If you are into reading as much as you are your movies, you have to check out Bookpedia too. It's by the same folks, and it brings the same organization to your collection. AWESOME!!! (Version 1.3.4)

NICK You sound like yet another software developer promoting his own program but pretending to be a satisfied customer. "Awesome" indeed, and, uh, don't forget to try my other shareware program! Well, I'm not 100% sure it was caused by some bug in DVDpedia, but about 1/3 of all the 400 movies I painstakingly inputted last week have mysteriously vanished from the database and I had to re-enter those all over again. If anyone else has this problem, they should post it here so the developer can fix it and save someone a lot of grief. Oh yes, this time I'm exporting the collection file as a backup. Except for the #@*! glitch, the DVDPedia is quite polished and well put together. (Version 1.3.5)

G ZIRFAS This program is fast, easy to use, has lots of great features and is always improving. It is by far the best one out of 4 that I've reviewed and the one I recommend to my friends and associates. It is inexpensive and worth every dime. (Version 1.3.3)

ANONYMOUS The search also uses non-US sites such as Amazon UK and DE, depending on which site you choose inside the search window. We would love to include Amazon FR and CA but so far they don't offer the same web services that the other three Amazon sites offer, i.e. sending out xml data packages upon request. But Amazon has said they will integrate their FR site soon in that service. (Version 1.3.2)

ANONYMOUS The most complete DVD catalog app out there for the Mac period! I would like to see more options for export. Specifically being able to edit templates easily. I don't have an HTML editor so I would like to be able to pick and choose which fields I want to export in the HTML export function. Also, Smartlists would be cool too. Keep up the tremendous job! CHRIS This is hands down the best DVD library tracker out there. Easy to use, speedy, and looks classy. I never had better luck finding my DVDs then with this keyword search engine. Right now my only suggestion is something I have yet to see in a DVD tracker, a 'view all covers' option, that would take you to the details of that dvd when clicked. this is the most intuitive way of viewing DVDs for me, and makes it like browsing through my physical collection. However, can i make one suggestion - please can there be a real Export To Web Sharing feature. iTunes Catalog supports this brilliantly, and i'd love to see the same within DVDpedia also. Sure, i know i can export and manually pick out the folder and then save... but it'd be great to have this automatically done by DVDpedia :-) Otherwise SUPERB application :-) (Version 1.2.4)

ALLAN I really like this application - I like it so much that I purchased it. I hope it continues to be developed. I would like to see a provision where you could click between two or more entries to place another record, like for instance: you have episode 1 with episode 2 beneath which may be followed by a few different other movies, but suddenly you found episode 3 to add, so you can insert it before the others directly under episode 1 and two...... if you get what I mean? ANONYMOUS Overall a very solid piece of software. I would like to see options to choose which fields to include when printing to PDF. I would also like to see a "cancel X" to the far right of the Search field, similar to the OS X Finder and iTunes. Fields like UPC, Region Coding, DVD Format (NTSC/PAL) would also be a bonus in the future, as well as pull-down menus in certain fields like in 'Rated' and 'Screen Ratio'. Also, being able to edit multiple DVD's would be time saving. I'm sure these features will be implemented in future releases anyway, but I thought I'd contribute my 2 cents. I've tried a lot of DVD organizers and this seems to be the best so far. Keep up the great work! (Version 1.1.2)

MICHAEL SIDORIC DVDpedia is the best DVD catalog product available. Clean, attractive interface, very easy to add, search, list print, export, and track your library. Had a couple of nit-picky suggestions and the developer responded in hours (!) before I had even registered. Yes, there are free alternatives that offer far less functionality and polish than DVDpedia. And if you are going to catalog a large library -- why complain about a program that costs less than even one DVD???? DVDpedia is off to an incredible start, and from the developer's interest and responsiveness -- DVDpedia is going to get even better! Great work Conor! (Version 1.1.2)

JIMW The marketplace is full of this kind of shareware for this purpose, all around this pricepoint (plus or minus $5). Each has its on features, for instance, some have better interfaces, others catalog other things, some interface to the net and download data about the DVD and provide artwork. So far no package stands out for me as a clear cut winner. My advice is to research the topic first and try several packages before paying your shareware fee. You can easily do this by searching on MacUpdate using first the keywords "DVD Catalog", then after finishing researching the results from this search redo the search using the keywords "DVD Collection". These 2 searches should give you most if not all the entries on this topic. (Version 1.0.5)

DVD COLLECTOR DVD Cache just became obsolete. As easy as this little program works, it is uncluttered and fast and shows all the necessary data in a single view. I used DVD Cache, but the price was just too high. $14 is just the right price for the application that does exactly what I need it to do. What I would like to see is a possibility to use bigger pictures and a zoom function.
