AEROSPEED  While I love the fact that the Halo 2.0.3 update makes it so I no longer have to use my CD to play, now my MacBook Pro 17" gets little blinking squares all over the graphics when I try to play the game. A friend with the same computer (but one rev later) has the same problem with the update. Neither of us had the problem prior to installing the update. Haven't had a chance to try it on a PowerPC machine yet.

BRIAN KENDIG  I have Halo 1.5.2. The 2.0.3 updater wants to update something named "Halo Universal", and will not update my version. I have no idea how to get from 1.5.2 to 2.0.3.

VERYCARLA  Is this game no longer in production? The "Buy" link above takes me to Amazon where I can buy a USED copy for the bargain basement price of $65! I'd rather buy it than pirate it, but pirate I shall if need be.

Does anyone know where I can buy a new copy for a reasonable price?

(Or else you pirated a copy off the internet and your serial has been blocked by MS/Bungie. You'll still need to buy a new copy)

MARK_CAIRNS  Much better on an Intel MacPro now.

Up to now the game has run better and faster on the PC version than the Mac version (I run both).

Three differences only:

1) The little stubby lights around the maps glow RED or BLUE on the PC version; they're just pale static cyan on the MAC version. Much prettier on the PC.

2) The gun turrets on the PC file three accurate "bullet beams" (a triumvirate) which helps aiming. On the Mac we obviously have that ugly streaming lightning thing going on

3) On the Shees (sharing a similar anomaly to 2) - the wing tips glow orange on the PC when the shee is piloted, they do damn all on the Mac version. Much MUCH prettier on the PC.

Unfortunately even this superb U-B version of Halo hasn't addressed the three points above on the Mac / Intel Mac version... which is a shame.

PC version still wins (booting into XP 32-bit on MacPro) hands down.

MARK_CAIRNS  The screenshots are from the PC version and with all the settings maxxed out that way a new MacPro could handle it (with the Radeon X1900 card anyway). Up to now the game has run better and faster on the PC version than the Mac version (I run both).

PEEVED FAN  I am still perplexed as to why the fuel rod's clip and overheat meter and the sniper rifle's angle indicators are still not included in halo. I would like to see an update that fixes this problem and includes these features that seem to be on pc but not mac. I have proof that these features are in the mac version but just seem not to be there, beause i opened blood gulch in a model viewer, selected the fuel rod gun, and it had its clip and everything. I would like these features to be included.

DR. MCBAAR  Lots of people don't realize that some 10 years ago... whenever Bungie was making MARATHON - they had a very strong conviction to ONLY make games for the Mac. Marathon 2 was released for PC and MAC at the same time, but the initial PC run was all bugged, and they all had to be recalled. Bungie was barely in the black as a result, and did not make much money with their next games (Myth 1&2, Oni). The only thing they had going for them was the next game they were working on... Marathon 3. Funding dryed up, and they would have had to halt production, unless some gardian angel investor saved the company. Microsoft had been watching Bungie for years - Marathon put Doom to shame when it was released, and Marathon 3 was sure to be HUGE if it was ever released. Sooo... long story short Bill Gates buys the company (somthing which all of Bungies original hardcore fan-base never thought would happen) and pours money into funding Bungies new game to making it the premier title for the X-Box. Premier titles don't usually have a number in the name - so Marathon 3 became Halo. Many macintosh users boycotted the company after that (Macintoshes PREMIER game company bungie had completely sold out to the EVIL of Bill Gates) and didn't bother picking up a copy of Halo when it was released years later on the Mac.

Heres the joke tho. The Mac version came out so much later than the consol version, that it is VIRTUALLY the same game as Halo 2 for X-box. Halo 2 is the most half-assed sequal EVER made. It's a joke. All these children worshipping Halo and thinking thats it's "All that" or the "Bees Knees" have never bothered to play the original Marathon games that Halo is based on, and most people don't even know that they exist.

Doom 3 is nothing but a game engine. When ID makes a game like Quake 3 or DOOM, they don't intend for the actual release to be that fancy. They just market out the engine to other companys to make the REAL good games (RTCW, Jedi Knight, COD). Playing Doom 3 is like playing an engine with no game - which is basically what your doing. When games start coming out that are on the Doom 3 engine, then we'll have somthing to play.

The Unreal guys have actually been coming up speed on their engines and have managed to license a few games for them - but Bungie, Microsoft, and Halo in general are not even in the running as far as first person shooters go.

BUY PS3 and not x-box UNLESS YOU WANT TO GIVE MR. GATES A LITTLE MORE MONEY THAT HE DOESN"T DESERVE AND DOESN"T NEED!!!

ANONYMOUS  Dude. Halo was ALWAYS called halo, not Marathon 3. I remember reading about it back in 1999 in MacAddict and it WAS called halo before microsoft bought them out. Halo PC/Mac is the same game, almost, as the console version, albeit with some problems, while Halo 2 is a complete revamp of graphics and some subtle, but appreciated, improvements to combat mechanics.

Get your facts straight. Ive been a Bungie fan since the Marathon days and I have played them all. I used to play Marathon 1 on our old 33 Mhz 68030 computer and I loved it.

ANONYMOUS  Halo must be THE most over rated, over hyped game on Earth. I do not know what the fuss is about. The graphics are pretty bog standard with little care and attention on texturing, some of the character models and environments look terrible. The game is very slow unless you have the most up to date hardware, yet RTWC or even Q3A looks better and they are much older so go figure.

A product of hype thanks to the Xbox and proof that if you spend enough on publicity and noise you can sell anything.

LITTLE WINKY  erm there's something wrong with you guys.. i've played Halo from start to end without a single crash. Enjoyed hours of mp also..

Performance will always be behind the PC with games because they're *ported* so there's a 10/20% loss straight away. More if you've a naff mac!

I've got a G5 with nvidia 6800 and my framerate is excellent. No complaints from me (well, with FSAA disabled that is!!)

HALO is fantastic, though i now prefer DOOM3 these days, esp with GreenTech Mod and there's a ton of new sp maps to (/advert) lol

SEVERIAN OF NESSUS  Like most PC games ported to Mac, this one doesn't run nearly as well as the PC version (partly because Mac hardware continues to lag way behind PC hardware: the Radeon 9000 card for Mac is NOT as powerful as the one for PC, despite the misleading name).

Despite repeated clean installs (including two on a clean, new OS), this game WILL crash with distressing regularity. I got an email reply from the techs at Macsoft Games, claiming that this is due to poor memory allocation by the original (Micrsoft-designed) software; a flaw which did not or could not be fixed, they said.

Maybe so, but the PC users I know don't have this problem with their version.

At any rate, the maps are poorly designed, in such a way that online play is constantly interrupted by instant death as one's character spawns into the middle of a hail of bullets, or directly beneath a landing aircraft, etc. Halo Online is spawnkiller's heaven, unlike Half Life/Counter Strike, which was carefully designed to avoid making life easy for cheaters who seek to boost their scores by spawnkilling. Also, respawn times are ridiculously long, and maps are few (there are no level editors or map creation apps available for download).

ANONYMOUS  Who dare you say that the hardware on the Mac is inferior to the PC world. I can show proof on many occasions where the PC world has been copying of Mac. One such is the new Microsoft XBox 360. The processors where based on a design that Apple created are currently used on there machines. The only reason that Microsoft got their hands on them was that they bought them from IBM which won the contract to make the PowerPC processors. During E3 the Xbox 360 Demos that were running were not playable because the they were not hooked up the the Xbox 360. The demos were actually running off two Apple G5 computers. Not only hardware but software to. The OS X system was layered on top of the stable UNIX core. Only now the Windows world is catching up. As a aspiring computer engineer I have studied both the machines and the Apple system is built on a logical design instead of being slapped together with sub-stander parts like most cheap PC's. It was even documented in may Computer Magazines that if you equip a PC with the same hardware found on the Mac the prices will be the same. As for the memory problem on Halo that is something that was never addressed by the Microsoft programmer who were contracted. Why is it that many Mac programs do not suffer from major bugs like those found in PC equipment. The reason is that the programmers working for Apple have their say on when to they think the program is ready for release unlike the programmers contracted by Microsoft, Microsoft's marketing team decided when to release a program and worry about bugs later.

ANONYMOUS  Hey, if it's crashing all over the place, that's your Mac's fault, not the game's. I run it on an 800 Mhz Ibook G4 and a 1.8 Ghz Imac G5 and I have never had any problems with it... so buy yourself a better computer.

SEVERIAN OF NESSUS  According to the tech support guys I spoke to, the Mac version of Halo crashes regularly for the simple reason that it's a Microsoft-designed game: it doesn't give itself enough memory to work with and thus crashes after a while. The updater does not address this defect in the game's design, though it does make it possible to play online multiplayer between Mac/PC/XBox Live, which is nice (mostly).

The game design is badly flawed to begin with; unlike Half Life, Halo (playing online maps) forces you to spawn into a hail of bullets, an ongoing firefight, or beneath a landing Banshee ALL THE TIME, each such incident being followed by an agonizingly long respawn time.

MacSoft Games have done their best to port over what could have been a much better game, if only Microsoft Studios (the game's designers) hadn't botched the original game's online-multiplayer structure so badly. So what else is new? This gamer will stick to Valve and Black Isle games in future, rather than reward Microsoft for writing garbage (with their budget, they have NO excuse for these kind of screwups).

PAKKMAN781  There are many problems with this version of Halo:

1. Graphics aren't any good, looks about a half as good as the Xbox Halo

2. Not all keys on the keyboard are Mappable/usable, no mapping of shift, control, etc.

3. Runs quite slow

4. Very buggy, just going into menus cause it to switch screen modes an such

5. Various other problems

My point: Go buy an Xbox and a copy of Halo or Halo 2, sorry if this sounds like betrayal to the Mac, but this port is a poor attempt...

My only problem is that I can't get it to let me use command or option as the secondary trigger and I have a kensington trackball with 4 buttons and it only "sees" them as left or right.

Also would be nice if you could get "crouch" to stay down till you want to get up.

ANONYMOUS  Mine is the post previous to this, and boy am I embarrassed. After posting, I copied the version prior to 1.5 from my other computer. Same poor performance. So the culprit is not the Halo 1.5 update, but instead it's probably the Mac OS X 10.3.7 update, which is the only other change that's been made to my configuration.

I apologize to all my fellow MU readers.

Things are more jittery (it's like I went down two generations of computer performance), and the graphics have become buggy (duplicate images of players, for example). RALPH  Logictech Dual Action Gamepad has issues with this update. I'm running a G4 1.25Ghz

It see the gamepad but when I try to set movement keys it will only take the move forward key. Moveback will not set. Look up will set but look down and the others will not. I can go to the weapons screen and set everything there. Default will not set anything on the gamepad. Saving and reloading will not correct this issue. I noticed major video issues but they all seemed to clear up after the reload. If there are any issues there during game play I have not checked them yet since the game pad is not working right. Mouse control seems fine.

I was able to get the problem to go away by running in "Vertex Shader" mode. Obviously this may not be possible in all cases, and there is some performance hit, although the performance tweaks in the update make "vertex shaders" a viable multiplayer option, whereas they weren't before

TOTO (HALO FIGHTER)  Even with an iMac G5 you still have a GeForce FX 5200 for video card. So if the game is too slow : adjust the detail parameters to make it run well.

SEVERIAN OF NESSUS  I dunno what sort of video card you run, but I found that even though I'd upgraded to a 128-bit Radeon 9000 card on my souped-up G4 (1.4 GHz and 1.25 GB RAM), that the solo game couldn't support the high-resolution graphics possible in the Game Setup windows. WTF? Turns out that the Radeon 9000 for older Macs (G4s) is not nearly as hot a card as you might expect; ATI still wants you to drop $450on their newer cards, the sluts.

The good news, though, is that you CAN set your graphics preferences for the game way higher and get a beautiful-looking game during the Online Multiplayer mode, even though during solo play the same high settings will overwhelm one's video card.

Worked for me, hope it workd like that on your Mac, too. Happy hunting!

CLAY GARLAND  Leave it to Microsoft, parent company of Bungie to let bugged software slip out the door. 1.0.5.3 introduces a Full-Scree Anti-Aliasing bug not present in the previous version. With FSAA on and a 6800 Graphics card on a G5 there is a sort of static that covers all objects with specularity. i.e. windshields, water, armor, anything that reflects. Cut FSAA off to stop this. It shouldn't matter all that much because if your computer has a 6800 in it, it can probably run the game at 1600x1200.

The main thing that really got to me was the fact the 1.03 patch totally messed up the sniper zoom on all weapons..........you would have thought it would be fixed in this new patch..but low and behold...no, it has not, WHAT A PILE OF RUBBISH, I think im gonna go get a refund.

ANONYMOUS  Well everyone, I just don't know what to say! This is because I've never used the 'W' key for forward. I'm right-handed, and have always used the arrow keys on my extended keyboard for movement in all games which supported it (sadly, some Mac developers recently have decided not to devote a lot of effort toward letting you bind all the keys you want to a command - and this DOES include Halo.). Nobody has yet given me a clear-cut answer as to why there are so many freakin' issues with key-binding! Please explain! More importantly, please FIX!

MARSVIOLET  1.0.4 breaks more than just the "w" key. I use "e" to move forward, but after applying the patch, pressing "e" causes me to move backward, and attempting to change "e" to any other key results in "x" instead. This is the last straw for me.

Halo is unique in that it is 75% brilliant, but 25% totally lame. And that 25% -- clearly the result of Microsoft's influence -- just completely ruins the game for me. Bummer.

I do not have any slowdowns with the rifle, pistol, or rocket launcher scopes, and I have not had any problems hosting games or connecting to game servers. HIGHGEARENGINEER  For those who are still stuck with multiplayer issues (unable to join any games), I was able to fix mine and here's how: (not sure if everything is necessary but do it anyway)

1) Move the folder named "Halo" found in your Documents folder to another location such as the Desktop. (this contains all of your saved games and such)

2) Delete the file named "Halo Preferences" in ~/Library/Preferences/

(you may lose your keyboard setup so if you changed it, write it down or something)

3) Delete the folder named "Halo" which contains the app from wherever you installed it.

4) Reinstall Halo. I read somewhere that the 1.03 update only likes it if you have Halo installed in your applications folder so you should probably do that.

5) Run the 1.03 update.

6) Move the Halo folder that you temporarily moved to your desktop (or wherever) back into your Documents folder (over-writing the new one that was created)

7) Enjoy (I hope this works for you)

JOHN  If you like Halo 1.0.2 the way it is do not update it to 1.0.3, for these reasons:

(1) Full screen has stopped working. Now Halo creates a window the size you requested, and blacks out the rest of the main screen and balcks out all side monitors you may have. It does NOT go full screen anymore.

(2) FSAA is broken. When you look through the sniper rifle or handgun sight, frame rates go down to about one fps. This depends on how much directed light you're looking at, but it renders FSAA completely useless for scope shooting. Pick up the invisibility pack and the frame rate goes again to about one.

(3) You have to put the original CDROM into the drive or Halo won't play. You can't fool it with a mounted disk image made with Disk Utility of the original CD.

(4) Backup your preferences before you update. I lost a whole bunch of check points and I am furious about it for not thinking to do so.

(5) Keeping a backup copy of the complete Halo 1.0.2 application, even on another volume, will not fix the full screen problems.

(6) The whitecaps striking the beach of Danger Island STILL have an ugly bitmapped appearance, and since FSAA messed up, I can't smooth them out.

(7) On the bright side, there are LOTS more servers to choose from now :-)

MICAH  Hi,

I keep looking for the 1.0.2 download update, but I cannot find it, ANYWHERE! Could you please send me the 1.0.2 update via e-mail? Or let me know what you might be able to do. I'd really appreciate any help you might be able to give!

BRIAN KENDIG  Halo is an okay single-player game, with graphics that were good in 2000 but are commonplace in 2004, and levels which are large but extremely repetetive -- some areas are identical copies of each other, and then the plot brings you through many of them twice.

The multiplayer aspect of the initial Mac release was okay for Slayers (deathmatch) games, but team-based games were a terrible haven for teamkillers. Someone could run around gleefully killing his own team, and he couldn't be booted off, and all the people he killed would have a PENALTY for having been teamkilled and would have to wait a few extra seconds before respawning!

Thankfully, the 1.0.3 patch has made multiplayer mode a LOT nicer. The penalty for being tk'ed is gone, and teamkillers get a larger respawn delay the more people they kill. And the networking is smoother and more stable, and best of all, there are suddenly a whole lot more servers to choose from.

Halo is still not up to the level of 1999's 'Tribes 2' on the PC, which to me has been the pinnacle of team-based multiplayer games so far -- Halo needs message binds and voice binds and animation binds, and could also really use a smaller font, more lines, scrollback, and more color in the message area. Most of all, Halo needs a horn on the jeeps, and a way to tell a driver 'wait up, I want to get on' other than having to shoot at him. But in general Halo is a fine multiplayer game, and a fun one too.

KAL524  Hey I tried to download 1.5 and it said that it installed and unstuffed but it didn't do anything or let me hook up with PC's. Then I unleaded Halo completely and then reinstalled it and added the patch and now I only get about 2 pages of servers and still can't play with PC's. Can anyone help?
