WEASEL I purchased You Control when I first purchased my PPC G5 years ago. It has so many features, that it took me awhile figure out what I wanted to use. Eventually I added ALL the features. One time, on an update the developer missed one small feature. I emailed them & they said it would be back on the next update & it was! I've never had any problems!!! I also have You Control Desktops, which is GREAT. You could set a different picture for each desktop so you could visually know where you are at. Years ahead of Leopard's "Spaces" which does not have this option. I give it 5 STARS. (Version 1.7.2)

DOOBIEXX I had ditched you control after I switched computers but eventually it came to mind and I gave it another shot. The program never gives problems, only thing I can complain about is the spinning beach ball when navigating through the menu's. Beach ball Doesn't slow anything down just don't know why it appears at all. Even allows me to click something else while it's still the "beach ball." It's stability, small footprint, and ridiculous amount of options/menus it is definitely worth giving a shot. You will be very surprised. Great app and becomes more stable with each update. ANONYMOUS I'm really surprised at how much I like it and how useful it is. well thought out and MANY options to get it just like I want. that's the problem with a lot of these things, I always think I would use them if they just worked a little differently. there are so many different ways to set this up that it's ridiculous (in a good way). very quick, easy and combines many little programs I was using into one nice package. the new meters in vers. 1.3 are just like Menu Meters (a must have- great program) with more options and a few less features (eject disks) so I'm trying them out now instead of MM. I got it because it was on sale for what I thought was a very reasonable price, finally. so I bought 2 copies. they'd probably do better if they quit changing the price drastically from week to week. MARTIN I agree that YouControl must be looked upon with sceptisism. Because they try so hard to sell with their smiley face. At least the smiley doesn't show it's teeth... I was about to buy actually. But not only was it impossible because Safari gave errors - moreover even in Netscape their purchasing site would not allow me to check out! I had selected "new customer" but it wanted a password. Strange... Not to mention that the line "Sign in Help" on the page https://secure.yousoftware.com/purchase/add_customer.php did not work!! What does all this speak for the software? (Version 1.3.2)

SGILBERT DO NOT SUPPORT REBATE MARKETING Excellent implementation... too expensive for too many modules I would never use. They should break this out into purchasable modules. I have no use for at least half of what the package offers. WORSE... and the primary reason I am giving it a poor rating is they are using the "AFTER REBATE" marketing ploy everyone is so sick and tired of. Just tell us the damn price and be done with it. Life is busy and complicated enough to be mailing in rebates. If you are offering a rebate then make it an Instant Rebate that is immediately deducted at the point of sale. I really hate to see talent like this wasted because of marketing stupidity!... Too Bad! RECOMMENDATION... to ALL DEVELOPERS... make your demos based on the actual number of days of use... not calendar days from installation. I am busy and very often take a peek at something and then revisit it much later... only to discover it has expired without me ever using it. Come on folks... A NONY MOUSE Wow, I'm impressed! You Control is the real successor to Now Utilities and Action Utilities. This is not only a collection of menu extras available for free elsewhere. The functionality of each module is best of breed and of great value. A boost for productivity. At first, I was reluctant to try it out, but now I think this is extremely well made software. I didn't run into a problem yet. On the other hand, I admit that the pricing is quite steep. But it has enormous potential that I yet have to discover. (Version 1.2.3)

MALCOLM COOKE I have been using this for several versions now don't see what the complicated setup complaints are about. It took about 5 min to set it up the way I like never read the manual. Just drag the home folder or app folder to the setup area quick and simple. The only thing missing is the drag and drop like maxmenus where you could drag a file to the popup menu drill down to the prg and start like a normal drad and drop or copy a file to a folder this way, when they implement this it will be even better. Youcontrol is more stable them Maxmenus which has a conflict with some of the menus in Adobe products. I have tried all the so called free things like Buttler lasted all of about 10 min and deleted it. I think these single apps with great control are much more sensible than 6 or 7 little apps from different authors all with the possibility of clashing code etc. The price is a touch high but I brought it the discount and am happy (Version 1.2.3)

GRADUS This is a bad joke. An incoherent bunch of lousy menu applets with memory leaks left and right - and a $70 price tag! ($80 for the "boxed version" - does it come in the shape of a trash bin?) They even require online registration, which is fair enough since You Control is widely known as the most pirated software since Windows XP. I was shocked to learn that this thing is built on the assets of the (formerly free) PTH modules. I liked them for their usefulness and small memory footprint, and I'm still running PTH Clock in my menu bar in Panther. I would have paid for a re-release as shareware, but I do not support fraudware. $70 - now that's what I call a business plan ... Obviously, implementing memory leaks into the PTH modules was so difficult that the dev and his business partners decided to charge a premium for this achievement. (Version 1.1)

ANONYMOUS The price on this thing is totally absurd. (Here, it says $50, but their site says it's $70.) It's not even worth trying out. Send $18 to the developer of Butler, who doesn't even require that you send him the money to use the program, instead. Butler is great, it has most of the features of this thing, and the ones it lacks aren't any big deal anyway. (Version 1.1)

DORIAN INNES I like this app a whole lot. But I HATE the price. Luckily, I stumbled upon the app called Butler. It does everything YC does (most times, even better) all except the weather, which butler doesn't have. But there are so many free menu bar weather apps or weather widgets for konfabulator that it is not worth it to get this app when there is a free alternative that, IMO, is better. To get this app up and running the way I like is quite a process, and even tricky at times, even for a novice user like myself. Again, Butler is easier to use and better. Give Butler a try before you shell out the $50 or $70 for YC. (Version 1.1)

MASTERKEW This is a nice app. I haven't tried any of the other variants of the 'pasteboard' feature, but this one is cool. So is the iTunes control feature. But that's about all I'd be using this for. Not worth $50, I think, and certainly not worth the $70 You Software's page is selling it for. That's not just a little steep that's insane. It's a nice app, but there are much better things I could use $70 for. You Control is very stable, and easy to use, has some very well-made features, and if you need them all, is a value. If you are looking for one or two menu options You Control isn't for you, and would just be bloat. All in all, I'd have to say that someone looking for only one or two of the features this application offers look elsewhere before buying this, as they would be paying more for the unused features than anything else. PTHUSER I downloaded and tried this application to see what had been done with the PTH apps. To my dismay I discovered that not only is this app overpriced and bloated, it also lacks most of the functionality of the applications it replaces. The pasteboard component especially is crippled in comparison to PTHPasteboard. I would not recommend this app to anyone and would suggest that the developers put their effort into restoring the lost functionality and lowering the price. The functionality offered by this app is certainly not worth $50. (Version 1.0.1)

LORIN RIVERS I got this at MWSF and spent over an hour playing with it. It's damn cool, bundles lots of different features into one package, and they've promised many more to come. Anybody who feels they're asking too much for it--simple, don't buy it. At the same time, you can't complain that any of this stuff "used" to be free--what WAS free, still is, it just doesn't work that well in Panther. I love it and think it's a pretty good deal. TOMC It doesn't bother me that they've re-named and started charging for these programs. It's the bundling that bothers me. I only care about the pasteboard. (Given that PTHPasteboard was one of the most popular freeware apps for OS X, I'm probably not alone.) Why pay $50 for one program? I'd pay $10 for it, maybe $15, but not $50. Fortunately, the last version of PTHPasteboard still semi-works in Panther. I'll stick to that until they release separate versions of the programs. (Version 1.0.1)

RICHARD BLUMBERG TomC says "I only care about the pasteboard." That's what I thought when I installed YouControl. But I've never become so quickly dependent on a program. For one thing, it's freed up lots of space on my menubar (I work on a 12" PB, and menubar space is precious). Having iTunes control, weather, and recent docs/apps all on one menu icon is great. And the integration with AddressBook and iCal makes those apps twice as useful. Great job! Well worth the $50. (Version 1.0.1)

JIMW I set this as an e-mail to the company a few days ago. I got an acknowledgment that it was received and I would get a response but no response as yet. I indicated I would post my comments if the product appeared on MacUpdate: When I started using PTHClock it was indicated that updates to it and Pasteboard would always be free. While I understand that they no longer exist, that does not mean I am necessarily interested in other menu products or wish to be forced to purchased products I don't want, or not interested in order to keep up to date with the products I want. But by bundling the successors to these two packages into your "You Control" product that is exactly what you have done. Besides, I find $50-$60 rather expensive as an introductory price for bundling together what is historically shareware from a brand new company who's viability and therefore support is yet to be tested and proven. Given the economy, the company may not be around in a year and customers may be out $50 and without support or any source of updates. At least with shareware their investment is not invested a single source for all of their menu items, but spread around and the odds are that not all of those sources will disappear and that they risk their total investment. Wouldn't an introductory price within a limited time period as an update charge for existing PTH users would have been fair and more palatable? I think it is worthwhile here for me to go into some detail on what I feel what would have been fair and reasonable to do for PTH users given their philosophy. If asked, I would have suggested releasing the patched version of the products (The patch works fine with Panther), indicating that PTH was out of business and the use of the patched version was entirely at the users own risk and came with no support whatsoever. I would have provide it for free indicting it was the last free update. I would have offered "You Control" as an alternative at a discount in the $30 range for a limited period of time to PTH users. So, given the cost, the bundling philosophy, and my concerns about company viability, I will wait a year and see what happens. I no longer feel the need to be the "first on the block" with a brand new product and a brand new company and assume that kind of risk when their are plenty of similar proven products out there that do the same thing. This may be a very good product and have good support, but I am not willing to take that risk right now, especially in this economy. I have been burnt too many times by similar companies. If you are around at the next MacWorld, maybe I will take the plunge - if your offer best product available for the money. I have not downloaded or tried this product. (Version 1.0.1)

RSOLDIN I noticed a couple of comments about this going from freeware to $50. This was never freeware in my book or from what I have seen for the years on this board or other boards. NCIANCA The application does what it says it does, and it's nicely implemented as well. However, the price jump from basically $0 to $50 is painful, especially if you already use and paid for other shareware that does some of the same things. Perhaps You Software should have made the modules available separately, so that you could pay for what you wanted to use. Mr. Barnes since this has gone commercial, I think there should have been an upgrade price for Now Menus users. (Version 1.0.1)

ANONYMOUS I am not upset that it is now shareware, I am upset because it isn't very good. I have no problem paying for shareware that does a function well, but when some of these were free they had more functionality without the irritating manager part. So basically you are paying $50 for a menu extra manager with half-assed functions. I was actually excited when I read that PTH was transitioning to a shareware program(s), I thought "Wow, now they want you to pay, it will be really good". To bad that isn't the case. Some people may find it worth it, personally I don't. My review has nothing to do with the fact that it is shareware, but more to do with the fact that I think the software is crap. (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS Should be called "You Are Stupid" because that is what you are if you buy this. The lack of polish on this app is blatantly obvious. Not to mention it was largely derived from the now defunct (and great) PTH menu apps, but has much less functionality. PTHPasteboard was great, but the pasteboard in this app is horribly crippled. Meh. Instead of trying to do all these menu apps half-assed, why not try and do some of them good? (Version 1.0)
