CALL ME YO DADDY I know we're all entitled to our opinion and it's very subject but for the life of me I can' figure out why some here consider Vuze 4 to be "bloated and ugly"? Vuze 4's redesign is anything but that. There aren't big and bulky round buttons all over the place (Firefox) but rather Vuze has a very clean and intuitive layout. It's a gorgeous Mac app. This version has made me a real fan. Vuze is a lot of fun and downloads torrents in a snap. As far as bloated is considered, it is quite snappy and responsive on my Mac and considering all that it is designed to do of course it is a larger bit torrent app than Limewire, uTorrent, Transmission or anything else out there for the Mac. Vuze is simple much more than just a plain and boring bit torrent app. I can't tell you how much I enjoy downloading a movie then firing it up in Vuze to watch it. That's a real nifty feature. Anyway Vuze 4 is hands down the best bit torrent app I have ever used with a very attractive and clean UI. (Version 4.2.0.8a)

STEVEN GOODHEART Couldn't agree more! I think the Vuze interface is great and very easy to use. Of course, compared to a minimalist interface like Transmission's, I suppose one could call it "bloated," but that seems unfair. The aspirations and uses of Vuze go *way* beyond that of the simple but powerful Transmission. I love them both, and use them for different reasons. Vuze gets 5 stars as far as I'm concerned. GORDON142 Very mixed bag bloated, ugly, and by default tries to install a very obnoxious browser toolbar with the potential to destabilize your applications (you can avoid this by using the "customize" option when installing). On the upside, stability is rock-solid, downloading is the fastest I've seen on a Mac client and never corrupts files. It's probably the fastest and most reliable client available for the Mac right now. So, while I don't really like it, it gets the job done better than the others. (Version 4.2.0.8a)

JAKE THE SNAKE Although this software is bloated and ugly: It is still the most powerful torrent client of them all. It is the only client able to defeat most bad ISP's using proper RC4 encryption and enabling the lazy bit field so I can actually seed. The only reason I give it a 5 star rating is because it is the only one that works properly with my ISP at full speed and allows me to seed. Thankfully with Vuze we at least have the option of toggling the "Classic View" so it still looks and feels like Azureus should. (Version 4.2.0.8a)

JON555 When Vuse was once Azureus, things were ok. Sure it was slow, bloated, and a resource hog, but it worked and had a lot of options. Being Java based, it was already a bad though. Then it turned into Vuze and bad went to terrible. It's only been downhill from there. Please, PLEASE, avoid this app. There are so many other better alternative torrent clients for the Mac. Again, stay away from this. Go up to that search bar and type in Transmission or uTorrent. Or whatever. Just avoid this app. (Version 4.2.0.8)

TEUN Coming from Tomato torrent, which I like for its simplicity, I had problems with UDP only trackers, so I gave Vuze a try. Wow, what a piece of bloat this is! It felt like dropping right back into the Windows era I happily left years ago. Since when do we need a full blown installer for a simple bittorrent client? Maybe for shoving in a drive by install of a toolbar in Safari, including usage feedback without asking me???? I wonder what other crap got installed as well... (The toolbar can be uninstalled by going to /Applications/toolbar/vuze and double-clicking the uninstall script.) Feels like realnetworks back in the day. Interface wise, well, what can I say. I took me quite a few clicks before I found out how to start the download of the torrent that was already on my desktop... The search function didn't find the torrent I was looking for, and generally returned results that I can find better with google. I'll keep it around in case I stumble over a UDP only tracker, but otherwise I'll stick to tomato torrent... (Version 4.2.0.4)

APPLE_CAKES I hate all of the "new features" that have been added into this fat beast. An azereus user for 4 years I have been using the classic interface since switching to vuze from azereus. Azereus has always been bloated. But now it is too much. I only download torrents I don't use any of the extra crap. Lots of columns, occasional stats page, lots of torrents. Now with 4.2.0.2 my filter torrents search bar is gone. So my app has less user features then transmission. I refuse to use the vuze interface. SHOTGUNWEDDINGS It would be super cool if the 2 halves of Vuze / Azureus were split into each their own program to reduce the bloat. With that said, when using this with the "classic" interface, it is bearable. But getting past the GUI and bloat, NOTHING and I mean NOTHING touches the speed and power of this for downloads. Transmission lacks the power to get around a "Bad ISP" and is great for beginners, but useless to me. uTorrent lacks anything to make it even worth a laugh. xTorrent is supported be a greedy pompous jerk that only wants to steal your money just like the stolen code he's charging money for. And it was banned on 90% of the sites I visit. LimeWire Pro is great for the Gnutella network, but lacks far too much for torrents The rest of the clients are dead or dying or useless. Azureus used to be good, if rather unintuitive. It did everything I wanted and it was very configurable. It was a bit buggy and crashed regularly but I still liked it. Now Vuze has come along, the quirky but still cool app I used to know has eaten too many pies. Vuze is confusing, bloated and slow. All I want my bittorrent client to do is download torrents. I don't want built in search engines or media libraries or . I like a nice well-rounded application that sticks out in the right places, but Vuze has overdone it. CORPSECORPS Not that i ever thought this monster was pretty or intuitive, but once i managed to get it set up, it at least did it's thing FAST and in a sort of comprehensible way, with a tab for stats and a tab for each torrent. This big redesign has only compounded the problems, glossing them over with this deceptive APPEARANCE of order. I've never been interested in the Vuze junk which is now more in-your-face than ever. The old views and stats are scattered so they're more difficult to find than after the Vuze switch-over. I HATE side bars in apps like this where i want to see lots of columns of info. It keeps forgetting column widths in some displays. The side bar won't stay out of my face! This annoying upload/download/vivaldi graph at the top got turned on and i cant get rid of it. It keeps coming back every time i run the app. Where settings have been fine through several upgrades, i'm suddenly getting all grey, yellow, and blue blobs (are those supposed to be smileys?) and i really didn't want to get that morass of horrid settings again. If there was a torrent app that was anything like as versatile i'd toss this POS. It's a big fat bloated java cow a la limewire which takes a degree in... gobbledygook to comprehend. I didn't want the advanced functions hidden in an incomprehensible maze of menus, tabs, and sidebar entries, i wanted them clarified and given a decent interface! Gaaah! Why is it every time ya want to perform some simple operation, you have to learn some huge new ugly app with a jillion stupid quirks and mountains of nit-picking details. I could swear the GUI's on all my favorite apps are turning to sludge. They have the oblivious goober interface, or the deluge of details one. DOUG S. You know, you can tell when an app was developed for Mac and when it was ported from Windows, or at least has a Windows version. There are certain issues with it's UI that never make sense. It's something Azureus always suffered with and it seems Vuze is no different. To put it bluntly, the UI is pathetic. Sorry, but it's true. It's horribly confusing and in no way intuitive. The UI makes it hard to do even the simplest tasks, tasks other apps make easy. They may not have some of the features of Vuze but they run well and run fast. What more do you really need from a torrent app? It has a lot of features. Oh yes it does... Too many. You'll never use most of them and even if you do know what they do it's still hard to get around the app to find them. In this case, this many features in this way ruins it. In fact, all the issues for Vuze come down to the UI. This app was made for power users and power users alone and has a heavy influence from it's Windows sibling. This app is fast, blazing fast, and it has some great features that put it above and beyond any other torrent app when it comes to potential, however the UI is so cluttered, bloated and confusing that it's almost impossible to figure anything out. I don't usually recommend this even to my clients but this needs a 100% from the ground up redesign. They need to focus less on features and more on tasks. In features they are king. In tasks they are a peasant. (Version 3.1)

PARAVIS Azureus was "feature complete" long before 3.0. But in an effort to merge Napster, iTunes, and Limewire into one application (most likely just to sell as corporate advertising space), they are messing with perfection, and are condemning this app to a slow and painful death. There are so many other more simple and efficient BT clients now that it doesn't make much sense to use this bloated java mess. DEMORAY Azureus and Transmission are the two clear leaders for Mac torrent clients. Both offer excellent torrent information and control. But each program has one major drawback, as far as I'm concerned: Transmission wastes much time and bandwidth downloading Failed Data. (Failed DL is data that failed the checksum test and needs to be downloaded again). Azureus has the drawback of including the obnoxious Fuze ad-ware on it's back. BRILDENLANCH I tried this out because I heard that some people had faster downloads than with Transmission. I was a little dissapointed. If you were some Torrent Overlord and needed every little tiny last bit of information about everything Torrent-wise thats going on at that time, then yeah this is cool. It kinda reminds me of BitsOnWheels (if anyone remembers it), except in Java. It's like the Limewire of Torrent apps. (and Im not suggesting that the Azureus devs stole the idea of the swarm view and whatnot, I'm sure Nicolas got the idea from them) (Version 3.0.4.2)

EZRABBIT I used to think Azureus was way to complicated, but after reading up on it and learning about things like port forwarding I've come to prefer it over the other osx torrent downloaders out there. My only quibble is a few small bugs in the UI. The items in the menu bar up top (particularly the little frog) tend to stay selected even after you click off them, so you end up needing to click them again to deselect them. Also, selecting contextual menu items (right click) usually takes two tries to get them to work. (Version 3.0.4)

SHOTGUNWEDDINGS I agree with Castle Rose, quit your whining kiddies! You made the choice to go into the advance options, no one forced you to! Azureus has the most options of 'em all and if you do get into the advance options and tweak things to your needs, it slaughters the competition in speeds, encryption (to avoid bandwidth shaping from bad ISP's), and much more. Transmission & Xtorrent don't even come close to the power of Azureus nor are as stable. I didn't mention the rest like Acquisition, LimeWire, Tomato, and all the torrent clients for two reasons. They are either dead (no support/development in years) or just a waste of time. Transmission is like a bicycle with training wheels and Azureus is like a Viper / Porsche / Ferrari / (whatever, pick a fast car). (Version 3.0.4)

CASTLE ROSE Don't be fooled, Azureus is one slick and pretty app. So far it's the fastest torrent downloader I have tried. A month ago I knew nothing about p2p, torrents, trackers and seeders. I decided to give it a try. After trying Transmission, Xtorrent, Acquisition,Tomato Torrent, and FrostWire, I'm sticking with Azureus. Yeah, the others 'simple' more or less. But Azureus can be simple or complex if you chose. Honestly, the other reviewers are just whining about having options. It has 3 user proficiencies (Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced). If you want simple just select 'Configuration Wizard...' in the Azureus menu and in 4 simple steps you got it. 1. Select you language. 2. Select your User Proficiency. 3. Select the speed of your internet connection. 4. Select a port. It tries 11342 by default but even if it is blocked Azeureus will automatically use an open one! So don't worry about it. Then your all set. Get you torrent, open it and watch it download. If you want to learn something click on the advance tab and look around. I also spent a little time reading about this stuff on Wikipedia. It's not rocket science boys. Don't expect everything to be spoon-fed to you in 10 seconds or the girls will take things over. Options are a good thing. (Version 3.0.3.4)

DOUG S. I'm giving Azureus a 2 because it fails in what I think are some key areas for any application. It's features are great, it has the most of any torrent app I've seen for Mac. You want features, you get them in full, hundreds. But I think it's a bit bloated because of it. Ease of use is horrible, I mean sure the very basics are easy but if you try to get beyond that it becomes very hard very quick. This app is one of the least user friendly out there for torrents. Value, well it's free isn't it? Can't get better than that. Stability is pretty good as with any application. It has it's moments but they are few for me. The reason I gave it a 2 and not a 3 (as math would make me) is because I'm judging by visuals and UI, which doesn't always fall under "Ease of Use" (says the web designer) and I think it fails there. The UI at first appears slick, but doesn't allow you to do anything. The second you try to you're shown one of the ugliest PC looking UIs for torrents that is so confusing and bloated with information and options that it's impossible to do much if don't know exactly how. This application has the ability to be the best app for torrents hands down no contenders, but before it can do that it HAS to figure out a way to make it more user friendly and visually appealing. AIKOUSHA Total crap. I finally decide to take the plunge for the new version because the ratio of horrible things happening after upgrading to people has come down to an acceptable level, and I have time to deal with potential issues, and the thing doesn't get past the splash screen and drawing the vuze window. The mainwindow process crashes, and even though it continues to load dozens of things in the background, the program is unusable, leaving only "Azureus" and the apple menu alive, and only "quit" and "about" are available as usable menu items. The main window is black, with a blue and white block labeled VuzeBeta, and nothing else. The window is not resizable or usable (i.e., no cursor entry into the white box, which is probably a text box). Only a cryptic message pops up, but is not copyable and disappears quickly. What a freakin' waste of time. Too bad 2503 was the last stable version, because it was taken down, and this destroyed it. Time to search through my old backups. No matter how many times they say Vuze doesn't affect things, that the same old Azureus is buried in there, it's a total load... The part of the program that fails is smack dab in the middle of the Vuze coding, and because that fails, the BitTorrent portion of the program cannot even be initiated.

AIKOUSHA I tried this out on a university computer... for about 2 minutes. The interface was horrifying and confusing. I don't know what the developer was thinking, unless this is the way they plan to distribute licensed paid materials (even if so, this is the wrong way to do that). This was so bad I just shut off the computer (this restores the computer to pristine status). There is no way I will put this on my home computer. Now, what should have happened for the new version was enhancing segments of code to be faster and more compact (i.e., translating java to machine), and modifying the interface so it is more system-like for the computers it is meant to run on. And now, after seeing all the other problems and horror stories, my paranoia is so high, I don't think I want to ever upgrade from 2.5... ever! I've left 2.5 running for over 2 months at a time, without any problems, and after lots of tweeking, I get better results from it than almost anybody using anything else from the same ISP. Why bother moving to this new horror show? (Version 3.0.1.4)

Now as a Mac user, I keep my Drive fit and clean, update software all the time. I run the last build of 10.3.9 on a G3 B&W True one could say why not just use 2.1, but when you want to always use lastest verion, it can be frustrating whe there are known bugs/bad files I also realize that this may not be the right forum to air this out, but there are som 360 posts besides mine. MACMD_2 I always thought that Azureus was a tad homely looking. I mean it always felt a bit un-mac-like in the looks department. But the great features and stability of Azureus always kept me happy . . . that is, until the 3.0 version codenamed "zudeo" was released. V. 3.0 has gone so horribly wrong on many levels: a) The interface, if you can believe it, has gotten worse. The homely white stripes that I have learned to sort of like have been replaced by this all black theme that looks like a really amateur shapeshifter theme. The more I investigate the app, the more disgusted I get. It appears that v. 3.0 places a new interface over the existing old one; both layers are still there. For instance, go to VIEW--ADVANCE and the old Azureus returns, well sort of. Also, there is no back button. When moving through the interface I keep looking for a way back and its just not readily apparent. b) The app is really unstable--lags and just performs strangely. I have a new macboook so it should work properly. Also, when you hit the close button on the window it minimizes the program rather than close it. This is so frustrating and counter-intuitive. c) With the "Zudeo" thing Azureus is pimping all sorts of content that I don't want. Even the search bar says, by default, "Search Everywhere." But what exactly does this mean? Overall, I want the old Azureus back with some updating that maintains its (prior) integrity. I really like Azureus and want to use it, but when it becomes bloatware and just plain bad software I had to speak up. This is my first review because I so desperately want the old Azureus back. NEES Let me start off by saying that I absolutely love the previous versions of Azureus. They were easy to use, had nice features, and best of all didn't usually give me any trouble. They had a few bugs like any program, but all in all I was very satisfied. Until 3.0.1 that is. Upon opening the program for the first time I was shocked to discover that the whole interface had changed, before it was clean and to the point, uploads, downloads, when you double clicked a file you got options, right clicking a file opened other options, all of which were easy to follow and find. This was bogged up with advertisements, and starting the program I had no idea where my downloads were. So I began clicking, randomly, trying to find my downloads. I eventually found the 'advanced view' and the interface looked pretty much the same as the old versions. I thought 'Okay, since I can make it look the same as before I'll give it a try.' The next time I opened the program the window was full screen, and was back to the 'home' page filled with crap I don't care about. I had forgotten how to find the interface that resembled the earlier programs. So there commenced the random clicking, again. I found the advanced window and attempted to open a torrent file for download. I then remembered that in this version it wants to download to a pre-determined folder not of my choosing, so I went to preferences to change some options to make it easier for my personal use. I changed some options, like opening the program minimized, starting in advanced mode, and others that I don't recall at the moment that were less important. I went back to my download window to find that it wasn't downloading. This file was from a big torrent site with a ton of seeders, and for reasons I haven't troubleshooted yet (which very well could be my fault, the lack of downloading, while annoying, is not the point of the review, the horrible interface is) was not downloading a thing. I became slightly more annoyed and decided maybe restarting the program will help, and at least I can test the changes I made. Upon reopening the program I found it to be just the same as it was, opening full screen, in the 'home' page, only with a major flaw, when clicking on the advanced button that previously took me to the old interface with the separation of downloads and uploads there was nothing but a big gray area where it should have been. And the file still was not downloading. I looked in the preferences to make sure that the options I had selected were still selected, and they were, I guess the program decided it knew better than I did what I wanted. So based on all this I have decided to downgrade back to the older version. It was simple, and right to the point. I hope other people have better luck than I did. (Version 3.0.1)

Being cross-platform it's interface is pretty gruesome, but some significant improvements have been made in this area. It's major bloatware for the typical user, but it's still *the* torrent client to use because none of the others have *enough* features. With the rest you don't really know what's going on, and there can be numerous problems because of the lack of controls.

BCWINTERS I just upgraded from 2.5.0.0 to 2.5.04 and it hasn't been the smoothest version change. Clearly a lot of polish has gone into the interface, with new icons and lots of tidying done to the column widths (finally, I can fit all the columns I want to see on my PowerBook without 1/4" margins on the edge of each column!). However, the UI has become frighteningly unresponsive, taking upwards of 30 seconds to sort by a column and giving me 5 seconds of "rainbow beachball" every 5 seconds when I'm not doing anything other than watching the standard My Torrents window. Having the My Torrents window open also now pegs my CPU up around 70% when previous versions never went much above 20 or 30. Closing the tab drops CPU usage down around 9-10%. There must be some screen drawing bug in this version or something. If you've been holding off on an upgrade lately I recommend waiting another round or two until this gets sorted. It would be awesome if you guys could work on this for future releases. It feels like a choppy Windows app and looks like one too. It doesn't flow with the rest of the intuitive interface of OS X. TASKMAN If people define StuffIt Deluxe "bloated", then I don't know which comment could be made for Azureus: I'm only keeping this thing on my hard disk because certain trackers I'm using actually require it. Written in Java, so it doesn't have a real Mac OS interface, it tends to be slower and sucks a lot of resources on the host machine. To be honest, the latest betas improved a bit, but still use a ridiculous amount of CPU and memory compared to other clients. Plus I'm missing the necessity of creating 80 threads. (Version 2.5)

BOBSTER Well, I am a happy torrentor once again. Azureus 2.5 is IMHO the king of torrent apps for Mac. I have tried and used the original BitTorrent, Tomato Torrent, Bits on Wheels and Transmission. I have liked them all in various ways, and also disliked them all in various ways. I tried a previous release of Azureus while I still used Panther, and it never worked properly. If I recall right, it never even launched properly! But those days are gone. Az 2.5 under Tiger is solid, stable and fast - and by fast I mean the DL/UL speeds are great. Transmission cannot boast the same success. Az's UI can be intimidating for some torrentors, but they work around this issue by offering 3 modes: Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. With each successive mode you get to tweak more settings. If you want to leave the setting alone entirely, then choose Basic and you're done. If you want to noodle, try either Int or Adv. Ok, that's it for now. I hope my honeymoon with Azureus 2.5 lasts for a long time! (Version 2.5)

MWHITE111 I'm a newbie when it comes to P2P networks. After reading a number of reviews of bittorent clients I decided to use Azureus. For the most part it has worked quite well -- I was able to overcome a NAT problem and now everything is all green dots and smilies. I have one problem however, my upload speeds are generally very low. Sometimes much lower (only 10% of) the swarm average when downloading a torrent. I've read through all the relevant FAQ's provided by Azureus but I can't seem to figure it out. Even when I'm done downloading a torrent and I'm only seeding my upload rate is very low (I have my upload cap set at 40kB/s and I never come close, uploading maybe 5kB/s or so.) How can a fix this problem? I want to maintain a "1" ration on the sites I use.

SOMEONE With the release of Azureus 2.5, a number of OS X-specific bug fixes and enhancements were added. The most notable of these would be .torrent file association. Now you can double-click the torrent file to open it in Azureus. Another important feature addition would be NAT-PMP support, which enables automatic port mapping in Airport wireless routers. Finally, Azureus 2.5 uses SWT 3.2, which makes use of Quartz for drawing. This means GUI redraw performance is vastly improved. (Version 2.5)

PO60T Not as pretty as some of the other clients for the mac, but what it lacks in the looks department it sure as hell makes up for it in the reliability and functionality. This is THE most functional client on the macintosh. You can configure it on many different levels. Your casual user will be happy with it (although probably if you are only a casual user you might be better off with transmission). Intermediate users will be happy with the ability to set individual upload download speeds per torrent and the ability to download only specific files from torrents. Advanced users will be happy with the dozens of plugins and other more advanced configurations. (Version 2.4.0.2)

SMTIPS I got sick of fighting with Azureus for 3 or 4 days just trying to maintain a 1 to 1 ratio and decdied to try Bits On Wheels. Suddenly now I'm getting true high speed and not being continually CHOKED on the download speeds like I am with Azurues. As I said, all NAT settings were correct in AZ and everything was in the green, and I've been downloading "good" torrents, so there's just no damn reason I can fathom that Azureus doesn't work NEARLY as fast as Bits On Wheels, all other factors being the same. Azureus is going in the trash, I wasn't really aware there were better options til the other day, I been fighting this application for a long time to get decent speeds. NO MORE. I don't recommend this application at all after my long-term "trial run" of unhappiness with it. (Version 2.4.0.2)

SMTIPS I've been playing with Azureus for quite some time now and I think it sucks. I almost NEVER get 1 to 1 up/down ratio. I've researched this a lot, tweeked the settings correctly, no NAT problems or anything. I can have 50 t0 100 peers, with 10 to 20 seeds, and I still don't get it. Whether I have 4 upload slots or 20, people never seem to share the same as I give. I'll have 15k going to one person who's giving back 1 to 2k constantly. Conclusion: Unless you're fool enough to be using an app like this to download the most popular brand new movies which to me would be very high risk (I use it mainly to get old star trek and other sci fi stuff), where like 1000 people are sharing a file, the whole bittorrent thing is a crock. There doesn't seem to be any way in Azureus to set something like "only share if the peer is giving you at least half of what he's getting" or anything like that. I find myself going into the Peers section and kicking and banning people who are giving me sub-1k but taking 10 or 15k, that's the only thing that seems to work...trial and error with that til I get some users who actually want to share and who aren't on DIALUP or something using an app like this. It's almost a waste of time but the only way I know to get some of this older stuff without spending hundreds to buy it from Amazon. Not just that...but Azureus very often refuses to shut down in OS X. If I stop the torrent dl first then usually it works. If the torrent refuses to stop, and stays in "stopping" mode and I try to shut it off then, not even force-quits will make it go away. From what I've read this is a big problem and one they aren't addressing effectively at all over many version releases. (Version 2.4.0.2)

SJJ_PUBLIC I don't yet have an IntelMac, but I think you should be able to get a working Azureus on those systems if you download the Jar file from the web site instead of the Mac OS X specific file. Mac OS X can run Jar files just fine. Just download it, and double-click the Jar file to run it. I believe the problem for the IntelMac's is just with the Mac OS X specific launcher part of that download, which isn't Intel compatible. The jar file is worth a shot, anyway. (Version 2.4.0.2)

BCWINTERS I recently upgraded from version 2.3.0.4 to 2.4.0.2 and thus far I'm not incredibly happy with the changes. Even when using the small fonts setting, this version requires wider columns to show the same amount of data than previous versions. I now have to scroll to see two columns that easily used to fit on my PowerBook's screen! Double-clicking torrents in the Finder or in a Safari downloads window no longer opens the files (and yes, the file associations are set correctly on my Mac), although it does bring Azureus to the front. To open them, they must be dragged onto the app window instead, adding a tedious extra step. There's also an annoying file-opening "wizard" rather than a simple "choose folder to save in" dialog. On the plus side, performance has improved (perhaps due to taking advantage of Apple's newer java implementation), especially in formerly lagging areas like viewing the list of files within a torrent to selectively choose what to download. Startup and shutdown are also quicker, and there are no longer stray processes left running when the app is quit. I still can't help feeling like this version is in many ways a regression. But until I can find another client as stable as this with the same advanced features (per-torrent upload caps, peer-blocking plugins, selective file downloading within torrents), Azureus remains my go-to app for torrenting. It still gets high marks from me despite my complaints. (Version 2.4.0.2)

JACQUES P. One thing about Azureus that others don't seem to do.. when you begin a torrent, Azureus blocks out the entire size of the download immediately. When you have little room left, this prevents downloading many things at once - and then offloading them to DVDs as the finish. Other clients I've tried only take as much room as has been downloaded at the time, helping out with the nearly full HD shuffle some of us go through. So far, my favorite client has been Bits on Wheels - however with a good amount of HD space I'm sure this one works well! (Version 2.4.0.2)

SOMEONE Azureus does have a few bugs. The most obvious one is the file assocation problem (double click won't open .torrent files). The developers have known this problem for a long time now and apparantly it has something to do with Apple's Java implementation. A second bug is the taskbar icon, which sometimes switch to an ugly low res icon. This is actually due to the ratings plugin. If you ever open the ratings dialogue, then the taskbar icon will be switched. To fix this, you can either avoid opening the dialogue or just uninstall the plugin if you have no use for it. EPKPHOTO I've been running Azureus for nearly a year now, and I have not had any problems double clicking a .torrent file to open it in Azureus or problems with the dock icon. Once I set Azureus as the default application for .torrent files in the Finder's Get Info dialog, the file association has stuck. I'll agree with others that Azureus can be a resource hog, but if you weed out the torrents you are seeding occasionally and don't try to download too many torrents at once, it runs great on my dual 800Mhz PowerMac G4. (Version 2.4)
| Feb 11 2006 |
SOMEONE I haven't confirmed the file association bug yet (on 2.4). However, the icon problem is present in the *latest version* (2.4). You can try it yourself by opening up the ratings dialogue and check your dock icon. I am sure this is just a slip-up on the developer's part since there used to be a related bug that was fixed a long time ago. As for the resource-hogging, it actually became quite resonable lately. Running on Java 5 allowed me to get the memory footprint down to 30-40mb. This is quite light compared to most web browsers. Also, I have never seen the CPU-cycle hogging as reported by the previous posters and I only have a G4! However, Azureus does hog CPU and Disk IO during hashing, but that only lasts a few minutes and you can turn on a slower version that is not so hard on your machine. (Version 2.4)

BAD CYBORG If you have a magical way of cutting down the Java strain on G4 processor, you should write up a guide on how to do that. On my end when I launch Azureus, (on both older and latest Java) the % CPU used may be around 4, but this is with only 3 torrents opened. And as download rate climbs, so does % CPU. So from the low 4 it would spike to 8, and then 10, and sometimes when you aren't paying attention for a while, then take a cursory look, you see 20+. Now with Transmission, the % CPU is always under 4, even with 10 torrents going. The only catch is it doesn't support two very crucual feature, DHT and encryption. (Version 2.4.0.2)
| Feb 11 2006 |
SOMEONE As far as features goes, Azureus is the best of the bunch. It not only includes many useful features, such as UPnP port forwarding, Encrypted connection (against Rogers bandwidth throttling), trackerless download etc., but it also has a plugin framework which allow you to add additional funcionality to the software. It also became easier for novices to use since version 2.3.0.6. With the beginner mode, Azureus hides away many of the complex (and rarely used) settings from novices, which makes it much less likely for beginners to get confused and mess up the settings. Unlike some of the previous reviewers, I found the performance of Azureus to be excellent. I have rarely seen beach balls and the interface is as snappy as any native Cocoa applications (note that Azureus uses SWT, which uses native widgets). One thing to note here is that by default, Azureus launches with Java 1.4.2 instead of Java 5, so you will need to edit "info.plist" inside the Azureus.app package and specify 1.5+ for JVM in order to bring out the best performance. Stability is always where Azureus shines. Again, I have only seen Azureus freezing once during years of use, compared to several crashes per month for Safari or one freeze every few months for BitsOnWheels. Azureus also seen to be able to handle low traffic torrents better than other BT clients and tends to downloads at a higher speed. (Version 2.4)

THECANADIAN Ironically, Azureus is the only usable BitTorrent client for me, yet is also the least usable BitTorrent client for me. In some places it suffers from feature overload, and in others it simply lacks performance due to its Java roots. Yet this is the only BitTorrent client which a) works under my campus network and b) allows any sort of detailed, per-torrent bandwidth throttling, among other settings. What we need is Azureus in Cocoa form (yes, I realize how stupid that sounds). Until then, I'll deal with the hairy startups and shutdowns, the occasional beachball, and the strain on my CPU. SOMEONE Strain on CPU? Azureus is using less than 4% of my CPU when hidden and no more than 7% when opened. This is with RC4 encryption enabled (to prevent shaping) and I only have a G4. So I don't see what's the problem here. Please note that Java *does not* run in interpreted mode. All java applications are compiled to native code when launched. Also, the Hotspot JIT is much more advanced than Rosetta and is able to *exceed* native performance under the -server mode (Java is used extensively on enterprise servers) (Version 2.4)

ANONYMOUS I'll reserve scoring at this time because this app is actually the only one I can get to work at all. However this application is getting more and more dangerous, it cause all types of issues on both my computers, including really hard crashes, which although gone from the dock still remain in activity view, taking up all the resources and causing all other programmes to misbehave. What used to stop you dragging a file onto the app has been fixed, to be replaced by double clicking not working. Trying to prioritise torrents to the top of the list does not work, or more it does work but does not move them. Information comes and goes and all in all it seems slower. Quitting the app is just as scary as ever, wil it quit, will it crash or will it crash the whole system? (Version 2.3.0.6)

ANONYMOUS In some respects this version is better i.e. using java 1.5,the app is more responsive, and downloads are a bit faster but little things like double clicking torrent files for downloading don't work which is a joke and download details disapeer (this might be down to how bad apple java 1.5 is or bad coding on the part of the azureus team). ANONYMOUS Most features of all the BT-clients available, BUT: You need only half of them usually. Basically the dht/"trackerless", proxy-support and last but not least embedded tracker might seduce one into using this client. The price is: huge resource-usage (cpu and memory), fighting with Apple's java-implementation (and the current java 5.0 release is definitely not good), a GUI, that is even worse now and it is slow. Not referring to the sluggish behaviour of the GUI (in fact, it is faster than 2.3.0.4 thanks to new swt and maybe some coding), but the core of the app - downloading and uploading data - has become slower and more unreliable than ever. Do yourself and the health of the swarms a favor and choose one of the two mac-native clients: Bits on Wheels for the more interested user or Transmission for the sunday driver, who isn't afraid of a few beta-troubles. From this build on I have also had lower CPU cycles [think watching anime with MPLAYER while downloading 3 files and seeding another; or using Toast at the same time. I have no problems using XML over HTTP to have the Azureus Dashboard widget running, in earlier versions this was a problem. Most important, I have run the whole bevy of plugins like DHT, safepeer, etc with 100% uptime and no issues like "slow or cannot quit". No more freezing! Machine? MacMini with 512M. I don't know if it's Apple's Java (I'm on 10.3.9) but I wish someone would look into it. This is the *best* client were it not for these issues. (Version 2.3.0.4)

PAUL I think its the Apple's Java, if you switch back to version 2.1.x.x then you don't have any troubles. If you use OSX 10.4.2 (as I do) then versions 2.2.x.x to this version shuld cause no problems anymore. I had the same problem, but when I switched to OSX 10.4 the problems were gone... That's my experience. (Version 2.3.0.4)

DAVID I downloaded three disk images, various formats using this program, none would mount using toast or the apple utility. These same torrents downloaded in the standard client (more slowly) but opened without a hitch. I don't know why this would be, but very annoying and unusable. Also sometimes had trouble quitting. ANONYMOUS 2.3.0.4 seems to be the current version on the site (June 28 2005). Is there a different Mac version even though this is a JAVA app? Love the features in this, although I'm feeling less need for it since upload bandwidth throttling was added to the official client. (Makes me friendlier on shared networks and gives much better responsiveness for other net apps than when the connection is saturated) (Version 2.3.0.2)

BIKEHAM Where on earth do I get 2.3.0.2 ? Why are the Mac people of the world the last to get the latest? The windows version has been out for nearly a week now. What gives? Why am I writing a comment on 2.3.0.2 in the macupdate Azureus 2.3.0.2 for the Mac when there is no such thing yet. Heads should roll for this outrage! (Version 2.3.0.2)

RATSLUT It's a fine torrent client but holy sweet Jesus, an absolutely wretched Mac application. It's ugly as sinful afterbirth and obnoxious, with popup windows and counterintuitive behavior, as a steel spike through the eye. I'd recommend using Bits on Wheels unless you absolutely CAN'T get a particular torrent working, in which case you'll have to hold your nose and dig out Azureus. (Version 2.3.0.2)

ANONYMOUS Wow...I wasn't aware that Azureus was hideous! Here I was thinking it was kinda clunky and sluggish, but no, it's a "steel spike through the eye". No-one's forcing you to use it, bub. As for Bits on Wheels, I've only had two torrents complete with BoW. All the others grind to a halt around the 90% mark, even with plenty of seeds. These same torrents finish correctly (and QUICKLY) with Azureus. And IMO, it's no better looking than Azureus. Azureus may not be pretty, but it WORKS. (Version 2.3.0.2)

ZOOMADDICT 2.3.0.0 created a very annoying & consistent habit of rolling over and playing dead (ceased UL and DL) about once an hour. All software updates have been applied to Java. Tried fresh install & conserative/liberal pref settings for pretty much everything that could be the cause with no change. Reinstalled 2.2.0.2 and back to a healthy Azureus. Like the new features, if anyone else has had & found a solution to this issue I'd be keen to read about it ;) (Version 2.3.0.0)

DUH SA SEKIROM i notice similar behaviour, but after 4-5 hours. it kills all UL/DL ports, taking edonkey down too. i run both of them, overal DL speed at 200kb/s, UL at 30kb/s (maxed my connection) and it runs stable for about 4-5 hours. than it drops down to DL 20 and UL 4-5. when running edonkey alone, than everything goes fine, even after 48 hours. but anyway, azureus is pretty stable and knowing and using it for quite some time, i rate it pretty high! ADAM I prefer this to all other torrent apps, but i must take serious issue with 3 things: 1) I should be able to close the main window, without it shutting down the whole program. This is a more Mac like behaviour, and should be implemented already. 2) I cannot drag torrents into it, or double click them to add them into Azureus in Mac OS 10.4. This is pathetic. 3) The interface is messy and poor by Mac standards, and seems to be getting worse. It needs to be cleaned up. Still my favourite, and I have donated to it, but I would like to see these things remedied. (Version 2.3.0.0)

A FRUSTRATED TIGER USER I too am experiencing Azureus probs under Tiger. Not only Can I NOT drag torrents to the main window, every time I try to add more download slots under "preferences," the bleemin' preferences menu bar crashes the thing! VERY frustrating. Not to mention that every brand new torrent at one time or another changes to queued rather than opening the port for me. Especially when I know damned well those ports are open! This needs to be sorted. Azureus is by far the best and easiet BitTorrent client out there. But these Tiger issues aren't helping its cred. It's doing my gord in! (Version 2.3.0.2)

ANONYMOUS A lot of features no doubt. Personally I prefer the simplicity of the original vanilla bittorrent client. Azureus has a strange way of self updating too, where it looks for torrents of it's own java patches, and it's checks for new versions of itself on each launch seem to take ages. ANONYMOUS Azureus uses 100% CPU only when it is checking a partial file when it is resuming a download or after it finishes the download. You can have many files downloading and uploading and it will use very little CPU. GO to Preferences > Queue And set Don't count torrent as using a download/upload slot if speed is below, to 0 kBs Then it won't be constantly checking queued downloads. Then Azureus will only use 10-20% of the CPU. (Version 2.2.0.2)
