FUTUREBOY  Please please please update for Snow Leopard (10.6). This was my favorite screensaver on the Mac. I loved how the matrix code would switch to outline the current album art from iTunes. I'm on Snow Leopard and can't use it and the URL listed as a potential Snow Leopard (http://s.sudre.free.fr/Software/matrixgl.html) is an older version (2.0).

Please update for 10.6!!!

RADARNAV  Couldn't get to load in 10.6. Tried it on an upgrade and on a clean install, and it will not load manually or automatically. However, worked great in 10.5 - it was (and will be again) my favorite screen saver.

HAL0THANE  Unfortunately, there are a few things MatrixGL still did better than 3D Matrix Code -- although I don't personally miss support for side-scrolling on network activity, that's something others might have used. MatrixGL also allowed embedding live iSight input in the stream -- not something I used, but was wicked cool.

One thing that I personally find lacking though is the support for embedding images in the output. MatrixGL did a simply smashing job of displaying any image you throw at it in a way that it's completely visible when set to the narrowest glyphs and the densest lines. 3D Matrix Code, unfortunately, only hints at the image. MatrixGL allowed for monochrome image rendering, and, so far as I can tell, 3D Matrix Code doesn't. One thing it does have going for it, though, is that it incorporates a "Ken Burns" effect for moving an image through the code, something really awesome to behold.

But I still miss MatrixGL.

JOHNVILLA99  This is probably one of the better Matrix code screen savers out there. It works good on a split monitor system. However, I've got two video cards that provide for four screens. The application crashes every time. I don't know if it's because I've got two cards or because the code didn't account for four screens. Either way, I can confirm it works on two monitors.

KINGRAT  This has been and still is the best screensaver for the Mac. I have been using it for almost 4 years on my Powerbook G4, and even now, guys with new Macs are clamouring to find out where I got this screen saver.

The registered version has a great feature :-

Transparent (grey) glyphs that speeds up with background network activity...and the best part it does this in real time, that means the glyphs fly in the foreground no matter what's behind! so you can play a movie and when you mouse to screensaver, it will start! Way cool!

VELOCITY90  To whom it may concern,

These are freaking sceen savers not expensive, task oriented software that is supposed to make working on our computers better.

If someone is upset because on The Red Pill screen saver they can make out a "blond, red head, brunette" while can't see anything in the MatrixGL, they might consider seeing a shrink..or get a life!

Both of these screensavers had been running on Tiger for me.

The Red Pill is great. And until recently, MatrixGL has been just as interesting.

That being said, I am curious as to why MatrixGL stopped working the other day. It doesn't operate at all now. And that is a bit disappointing.

And your page for buying a code won't load.

Thank you.

RADD  Sadly, many people here seem to be reviewing the "unregistered version"... and comparing this to Red Pill. Red Pill is a free saver that does what the unregistered version of MatrixGL does very well, if not better for some people... no argument there.

But the full version of MatrixGL must be seen to be believed. Honestly, I can hardly believe it is the same product... there are so many cool options in the full version that it makes my brain hurt... video, audio, picture rotation, transparent to desktop, log files as streams, options, options, options.

While the unregistered version doesn't seem to stand out very much...

The registered version is EASILY one of the best screensavers out there. In a word: Unbelievable.

APPLE CLERIC  This is one of the best screen savers I've ever owned. I am very impressed at what it can do. I've tried "Red-pill", yeah it's free..However, green just get's OLD real fast. I was staring at my screen one day and was thinking, "Wouldn't it be awesome if I could change the colors?" Well, MatrixGL made my thoughts a reality. Thank you very much to the creators on developing this product and making it affordable! Unlike your normal shareware fee of $10, this product is only $5 dollars. I didn't even know all I was getting when I bought it. This saver offers much, much more features. I am really impressed! Excellent work.

ZERODARK:30  5$? Sure!! Why? Time/expertise/ability - I really appreciate your effort to create an awesome mod that I can demo to my Clients, so many of whom would love to "trick out" their new Macs, but are busy with their businesses and encounter intimidation from "techs." Five bucks is a very cheap price for advertising the Mac platform and a feel-good for Mac owners in the small business environment. I'm glad to add 5$ to help the developer know his/her/their efforts are appreciated. Thanks!:-)

OSCILLIK  i'm sorry, but if you look at artwork posters for The Matrix (all three films) you will clearly see that Red Pill is more authentic to the code used in the film

for a start, the numbers that are used in this screensaver seem to be a Sans font, whereas the numbers in the actual code aren't a Sans font

JUNPEI  This may not be as "realistic" an imitation of Matrix code, but I like it much better than the other Matrix screensavers out there, and doesn't use much CPU (with something like RedPill, the fan on my PB comes on after a while; I don't want the fan coming on from a screensaver!).

Just the free version is great, I've been using it for a while. 2.0 has some good improvements (though I really don't care much, I just like the basics).

PLBOGART  Well, I suppose it's an improvement over the previous version but I've seen better. Unfortunately it's on a Windoze machine. http://www.uselesscreations.com/matrix/ is much better and has some very cool features. The screenshots don't do it justice but it would be great if someone could get permission to port the code to OS X as it also moves the viewpoint through the "code" as well as rotating it and changing perspective. If that's not enough, it also fades in and out images from all three movies using "code" to render the pics of Neo, Morpheus and quite a few more from the all the casts. There's more but you get the idea.

ANONYMOUS  this screensaver is jerky on my system

iBook 900MHz G3 640MB RAM

even with FruitMenu and APE turned off it's jerky

it's a decent enough looking screensaver though - no doubt about it

but i find that the glyphs are all too familiar...they don't look like the glyphs used in the film.

the only screensaver i've come across to have realistic glyphs is Red Pill

i use that religiously

ANONYMOUS  When I saw this, I said, "Pay for a screen saver? You must be joking!" Then I tried it, and a few minutes later I was paying for it. This really is quite cool.

My only complaints are really more like wishes. When the option is enabled to include log file messages, the messages look a little different from the other text streams - sharper, and not changing color or text in any way. This is fine, but what I would really like is a way to send the screensaver arbitrary text to make into a stream - with a way to send multiple strings, so one could flash-and-change into the next. The idea of actually being able to see information in a display like this is just too cool to contemplate.

ANONYMOUS  MatrixGL is a great Matrix screensaver. The standard functionality is great - fast, reliable and looks gorgeous. The registered features are great fun too, the changing colours add a bit more depth to it, and its really fun to see your Apache log scroll up the screen :)

As for complaints that the glyphs all go at one speed, this is only true (at least for me) on the slowest possible setting - at all other settings the speeds seem completely randomised.

CAPSUL  This screensaver has a few nice features, but the Matrix styling is missed here - all text strings fall at the same speed, kind of like watching the road go by in a hole on the floor of your rusted out car. And the font - sorry. The Japanese glyphs are rounded and the Roman characters are serifed. Feels, well, wrong.

Changing colors is cool, but to me it seems even the slowest speed is a bit fast. Great update, but needs some art direction attention..

AGENT ORANJE  The best Matrix-style screensaver got better with v1.1. My review of v1.0 had a few minor suggestions for improvements, which have all appeared in this version! The display is still smooth, beautifully rendered, and very true to the effect it is based off of. Excellent screensaver, and by far the best of the Matrix-style genre.
