UBUCRAIG  Great when it worked.

For weeks I used JunkMatcher in its default mode with terrific results (1Ghz PowerPC, 10.4.8). Dozens of Spam emails that Mail wasn't catching, we moved into the Junk folder, and highlighted so it was easy to see how well it was working.

Then I went to the Apple Store to learn more about Spam Sieve vs. JunkMatcher. There was a person there who knew about both, and I learned how to use the train as ham/train as spam function, and how to make some of the tests "hard."

Within 48 hours of changing tests to "hard" and using train as spam about a dozen times, Mail began to act strangely: the Junk button would take a full minute to send mail to the Junk folder; the program would take two minutes to close; Junk Matcher itself would take five minutes to open - if at all. Attempts to reset JunkMatcher and Mail failed to correct the problems.Fortunately, all sysmptoms disappeared when I unistalled JunkMatcher.

Fool that I am, I'm going to try JunkMatcher again, but leave it in default mode. If it acts up again, I'll move to Spam Sieve.

DIGGER1995  Finally fixed a problem. I was having slow "move to junk" symptoms... started last November or so.. did not associate it with the install of JunkMatcher. If one has an old install of JM one needs to delete the JM application support folder in the user library.

OR edit the JM tests and properties files therein, which is what I did. Working great now. OS X 10.3.9

Details in the JM Help menu!

PASCHION  I could not get it work with 10.4.3.

The log file always is emty and if you try to open one mail in Junkmatcher it will crash. Always. I tried to install and uninstall the aplication a couple of times...

The "manual" is not worth to mention.

o.k. it is free but it does not work on my computer.

RAYFROMNM  The developer has a fix. It's not a Tiger issue, it's an issue of upgrading from 1.5.8 to 1.6.0 or above. See the "Junkmatcher How-To" section under Help. He describes a couple of easy fixes if Junkmatcher stops working after you've upgraded. It stopped working for me, but when I used his solution to fix the problem, everything works great again.

Terrific product! Thanks to Junkmatcher team for keeping it free!

ANONYMOUS  I'm the author of this app. Let me try to explain why it's so darn hard to write this app (some technical details follow).

Q: Why can't you move a matched message during the messagee downloading stage?

A: Because for some bizarre reason if a message is moved from a POP inbox before downloading finishes, Mail.app will not remove the message from the server even if it's told so.

So I had to separate downloading and matching into two stages, and this presents at least two challenges:

1. Need to have a reliable way to know when downloading starts and finishes inside Mail.app

2. Need to collect the info about the incoming messages

The solution to the first involves a loop waiting for Mail.app to become idle. BUT I can't let each incoming message trigger this waiting loop (100 messages would imply 100 processes!). So a locking mechanism must be thought out to ensure only one message triggers the waiting loop.

The solution to the 2nd challenge is to place appropriate locks on the queue files so when multiple incoming messages *simultaneously* trigger the queue updating action, the queue files would still be in a consistent state.

Adding to this complexity is that Mail.app apparently can't successfully connect to a second account if processing of an incoming message has taken too long. This implies I can only start a background process in junkMatcher.scpt. (the symptom of this is a message "Connect to xxx..." shows for a long while and timeout)

So you see, simple limitations (moving messages from POP inbox, and time limit on processing each message) have caused great pain in engineering the workaround, and has increased the complexity of this supposedly simple app tremendously.

For people feeling it's been updated too frequently, I hope this partly explains why. If anyone is willing to be a tester before I hit Macupdate again, please do let me know.

When I started (for my own use) it was really simple, because I only need to consider my own setup. I didn't know there are so many hidden traps in this thing. So in a way I rely on people's feedback to do testing.

CO2  Hasn't worked correctly for me yet, but the author has been extremely responsive, and am sure it'll be sorted out (whether by Apple deciding to debug Mail, or by Ben's own time!) ;o)

LARRY FRANSSON  With 0.52, he seems to have fixed the only remaining problem I had found. This is a great filter! It catches the stuff that still gets through Mail's filters. Using this in conjunction with the SpamCop.mailbundle, my spam filtering and reporting time has been reduced to a fraction of what it used to be.
