MARKH  YASU is a wonderful utility that I use and recommend to all my Mac clients. I put it in the Dock of every Mac I work on, along with Disk Utility and SuperDuper!

I just saw a review by PCESSNA that infuriates me and demands this response:

PCESSNA's comments: "I can't believe you'd put a price tag." YASU has had a "Friend of YASU" suggested donation of $3.50 for several years. That is a complete bargain.

PCESSNA goes on to say, "I was going to donate like 10-15 bucks. . ." Really? Why hadn't you done so already?

PCESSNA continues with "I'll support your app again." Again? What support have you given -- EVER?

Finally, PCESSNA says, "Until then, I hope you stop getting support by anyone as well." This sounds like something a vindictive little cheapskate might say. Not PCESSNA, of course.

PCESSNA  I was like yes, another update of good old Yasu for snow leopard. When I saw the price tag, I said forget this.

To Dev: I can't believe you'd put a price tag. I mean 3 bucks? I was going to donate like 10-15 bucks for your hard work and effort, but forget you, please come to your senses and remove this price tag and I'll support your app again. Until then, I hope you stop getting support by anyone as well.

Thanks :)

PAUL ROBERTS  If I were the developer I would blacklist you from ever downloading my ap again. Your comments made no sense..."I was going to donate $10-15, but since you now ask for a $3 donation, I resent that and will not support your application and hope that no on else will..."

You really need to get a life and learn how to respect other people, especially those who have provided you with a free product in the past. It's well within the dev's right to charge whatever they want to.

If I were MacUpdate, I would send you a warning or even better disable your account for 3 or more months. You really don't deserve to be among us.

JIMMITCHELL  The main download link seems to be okay (tried it myself), but yes, the link for version 1.0.3 for Jaguar/Panther is wrong. Since there's no way to change that via the app listing page, here's the correct link for Yasu 1.0.3:

HARRY G.  For my purposes, this is still the best maintenance utility around: fast, reliable and with a very clean and well-designed user interface. I can only recommend it.

JIMMITCHELL  Keychain access is going be removed from Yasu 2.0.1 this evening (9/21). Though I haven't been able to reproduce it myself, there have been reports of an issue that corrupts the login keychain. I take the report seriously and I will work to resolve it as soon as possible.

In the mean time, it is recommended that users not store their passwords in the keychain. For those who have, I would suggest you remove the Yasu entry from your login keychain using the Keychain Access application located in your Utilities folder.

ANONYMOUS  I just ran my usual routine "plus" (ie, everything but reset trusted apps and discard browser cookies). YASU 1.3.2 works fine in 10.4.2 and reboots just as it's supposed to, as usual. This is a great utility.

ANONYMOUS  Could you explain what you mean by slower than cocktail? All these apps are just wrappers for unix commands, speed shouldn't vary at all.

Or am I misunderstanding?

ANONYMOUS  Nice tool, one funny thing tho': After restart, I got a message saying 'the contents of the User folder cannot be put into Trash' 'Are you sure you want to delete the entire User folder?' Wooops. Dunno whether this is due to Yasu but I sure never had it before and it appeared right after the Yasu routine. Anybody else had this experience ?

All options set except: Update prebinding, Reset trusted applications, Clear font cache, remove cookies, clear Safari bookmark icons and Clear application/ system logs.

SON_OF_HORUS  Tested YASU under 10.4.1

Asked it to clear history and caches of all 3 browsers. Checked files, all emptied as promised.

Steps followed:

1. after moving YASU to app file, logged out and DID cold start (Old Mac strategy handed down from days of yore, 1984)

2. elected NOT to have automated restart

(thanks for raising issues with this!)

3. quit app and restarted manually

Nothing appeared broken or otherwise scrambled -- but ya' never know 'til the sinkhole takes you.

ANONYMOUS  After running this program with all checked except cron items it rebooted or said it was going to reboot. It asked me to hold down the power button to restart computer. After doing this my screen came up but dim with the fans running on HIGH and the icon in the center of screen continued to spin. I waited 5 minutes but it did not boot up. I finally held down the power button to turn off the computer and pushed power button to turn it back on. It came back up as normal.

I am running OS X Tiger 10.4 G5 1.8 Ghz 1.5 GB DDR SDRAM. Is this normal?

JIM MITCHELL  Dear Annonymous,

MacUpdate is not the proper forum to post support related issues or requests. The documentation included with the Yasu distribution is VERY clear about how to contact me, the developer, if it is necessary.

Had you done so, you would have gotten a response within an hour, guaranteed. I do not take the time to review comments posted here, or elsewhere, on a regular basis.

Next time, please, contact me directly using the methods outlined in the documentation. Thanks.

B.R-U,CE  Great utility, but there is a PROBLEM with 0.8. When you choose all the options, every file that you click on brings up the message "This is the first time you are starting this application from a file..." Worse, .dmg files lose their icons and don't open at all unless you do a getinfo and change all of them back to DiskImageMounter (which seems not to actually exist anywhere on the hard drive as an application).

I'm not sure if the author intended to remove all these associations for a reason or if it is a bug, but it can be upsetting to have your .dmg files fail to mount -- until you fix 'em.

JIM MITCHELL  B.r-u,ce (a.k.a. Apple Rocket),

I notice that you've posted this exact same comment over at Version Tracker as well. What baffles me is that you've made absolutely no attempt to contact me (the developer) directly to report an issue you seem to think is a 'bug'. Odd.

For the record, there is no code in Yasu that would do any kind of harm to the association between .dmg files and Disk Utility. A quick look at the help file will show that, as all shell scripts used in Yasu are listed there.

Out of the several thousand who have downloaded Yasu, both here and at VT, you are the only person to ever 'report' .dmg disk image file trouble. My many years of Mac support suggest that it may be a problem with your system that is causing the trouble. Perhaps you should look into it a bit more closely. I would suggest running DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro on your system if you have access to them.

For future reference (and this should apply to ANY software you evaluate), consider reporting issues you feel are potential 'bugs' directly to the developer. I know first hand that most software authors take an immense amount of pride in their work, and would take a bug report seriously.

Finally, as for the 'Trusted application' flag reset issue you mention. I have already taken the suggestion into consideration and am working on a new version of Yasu that will allow that option to be skipped. It should be ready for release in the very near future.

MODPOD  Jim is being to self effacing. Yet Another System Utility (YASU) is more than just another system utility. It bundles together a bunch of scripts into the most unassuming and simple little app out there. It just works, without without your having to go from tab to tab (Cocktail) or any of the extraneous frills of Tinker Tool.

DEWAUN  YASU has proven to be a simple and highly reliable interface for non-technical and non-Unix savvy users to manually administer the built-in Unix shell scripts for performing system maintenance. Works great on G5's, G4's Running the latest Panther upgrade (10.3.5) and even my old G3 (Running OS X 10.2.8). Quickly and easily repairs permissions after an update...and auto-reboots when it's done.

TAAVI TAIJALA  I've used Yasu and it works exactly as it says, however thats not why I'm commenting. If the developer is checking this page I was wondering if you (Jim Mitchell) would like to colaborate on a maintenance application. I'm trying to learn to program better and have my own maintenance application, but there are something which I am unable to do for lack of knowledge. If nothing else it would be fun if you could give me advice on my application, though the main thing I am looking to do is learn more. If you (Jim Mitchell) are interested, post a response and I'll send you my email.

CRISPIN SATCHEMOE  I am commenting because I too, am making an applescript wrapper for a script (done in BASH) that leverages common unix apps. I wish you had made the source script readable! Your app is free so why not make it perusable by interested parties (like me)? Another issue is that since running maintanence apps can be a scary thing, it would be nice to know exactly what was going onn under the hood; or at least which publicly available scripts/applications you are using. That said, more power to you and congrats on getting something solid enough to release (although I am reluctant to run this for the above stated reasons)... I can relate!
