AVV3LENATO  The last update make Pixen Snow Leopard compatible but remove the ability to move/copy/drag the cel from the upper film strip.

Now it is impossible to do even the simplest operation... as drag a cel back and forward.

I found three more bugs... Just for your information: Hi CPU usage when idle, “Export to image sequence…” not working anymore (ex. BMP export) and “Save as Gif” export only one layer of a layered animation sequence (it's an old bug; you have to manually merge all layers and then export)

Hope this will help you guys ;-)

TENKERASU  Okay, this is REALLY bad: I had just figured out how to do my very own .gif animation in Pixen, and I created a character blinking. I fiddled with the sizes, the length, and what-have-you on the frames, and I saved it, closed it, thought I was done. I uploaded it onto deviantART. I opened it again to change the size to make it my avatar for that website, and it not only kept closing on me, I couldn't touch anything I tried to work on, I couldn't resave it, because it would close, and then on something like the third time I reopened it, it completely deleted my .gifs. ALL OF THEM. I had like ten! You're lucky I had them backed up! I reopened them, AGAIN, and it just kept closing on me. What the hell. I have barely used this product, I mean, just for messing around making little tiny gifs that are way under 100 kbs, and it hates me. I deleted it because the program itself was taking up too much space on my HD. Thanks a LOT, guys. You seriously owe me one.

-An unhappy customer, TenKarasu

TOTEN MASKE  I was going to happily download Pixen, but it seems that their site has been infected with an HTML:Iframe worm according to the virus scanner at work (which I was going to download and burn the software to a disc for my Mac Pro). Can't seem to contact Open Sword about the issue with their site.

COCOUA  this is a great... toy

pixen looks like the personal project of a littler genius tha t knows very well whta a pixel artist need, but it still being in progress, its not a sustitute of photoshop (which have all the features of pixen and much more, of course) for professional workflow, but it´s very interesting for play with.

web icons and little square based pictures are now easy to do with pixen

very nice the reptile soft. (not seen in photoshop!)

ARGLBORPS  Wow, crashing left and right on 10.4.7 on a Mini with Core Intel Duo.

Change settings >> crash

Hmmm... I'd not even call this a beta.

WHOPPER  I like the new features, but not the unexpected and seemingly unrelated crashes of this version on my eMac 1.0 Ghz, Mac OS X 10.3.9. I hope this will be fixed in a next release. Otherwise, I'm very happy with this software.

WHOPPER  I should add that the crashing only occurred with animation files, never with still images. Especially switching between cells with several layers each caused crashes.

ANAME  Great update! Only one thing:

When I'm closing an unsaved document, without wanting to save, I get the following doaligue message:

"KABOOM. Could not delete backup file "/private/vat/tmp/folders.501/TemporaryItems/PixenAutosave.pxi".

I had this problem in the previous (beta) version as well. I've tried to delete the preference file and I've also repaired permissions on my harddrive. Any ideas for a solution?

I love Pixen. ;)

JETFIREDX  Absolutely brilliant. I've been watching Pixen develop slowly and the last beta was still pretty sluggish for speed. This new 3.0 version is jaw dropping to me.

Flood fills with 0% opacity color works like I think it should - fills the color regardless of it being transparent. (other apps seem to think that transparent color shouldn't replace what is being filled...)

Whipped up a PNG to turn into an icon with a nice transparent background in no time tonight in a few short minutes without having to bother with alpha channel masks or anything.

Undo function can be a little slow to respond still but I am okay with it. I had no crashes or problems in 30 mins of use.

I can't wait to see future releases of Pixen. Reminds me of the good old days with DeluxePaint4.

CROP  Found out that it's just a bug in the French localization; bad nib file, may be just a typo or a missing file...

I just trashed the "French.lproj" folder.

Anyway, this one likes to crashhhhhhhh :)

I guess I have to dig; too many troubles.

The first gif I tried to open was empty, the second one had its RGB channels shifted by one px (beautiful effect though...)

IAN HENDERSON  We're automatically importing the Mac OS X palettes into our palette (use the pop-up menu in the palette panel to select them). If you want to use the default color chooser, just double click on a color in the palette (to change that color), or single-click the color well in the tool picker (to use the color for drawing).

If you mean something else by "Mac OS Color Palette," could you please clarify?

SLNEW  Pixen V2 is becoming a really useful tool in my studio now. Stable and intuitive interface. And the new grid system specially designed for pixel illustration (Super Cool)

The option of output as EPS from the same file is really, really useful for print application as well.

Those interested in pixel illustration should definitely give this a try.

DOJOB  Full of very neat (unique) features like double palette that allows you to use one tool with its color setting on left clic and another one on right-clic.

for instance you could have the pencil on left-clic and the eraser tool on right-clic.

Interface very well designed

Runs smoothly on my G4 400

Once you tried it you can't live without it

MAX RUEHL  I must be stupid aswell.

I get Pixen r1v12 running; select 'New' from the 'File' menu (of which displays New, Open, Recent, the other items are greyed); the tool palette appears; nothing else.

All the items in the menus 'Edit', 'View' and 'Layer' are greyed. The 'Window' menu items are all greyed, except 'Bring to Front'. The Prefs item in the 'Pixen' menu is greyed. And Help isn't available.

Instructions would prove helpful.

MAX  (Sorry, but that happens because you're still running Jaguar!)

Pixen will start up on 10.2, I guess I'm wondering why a pixel editor requires Panther.

(Unfortunately, Pixen is only compatible with Panther or higher.)

Thanks for singling me out. Because of an oversight on either your part or MU's part, on July8th your app apparently required 10.2!

(I hope that if you upgrade some day, you will try Pixen again. Thanks! (7/12/2004, Version: r1v12)

Maybe I'm 'too sensitive', but I detect a sense of snottiness in your invitation. (BTW, even your reply indicates r1v12!)

Look, I realize that Pixen is (currently) FREE, but my confusion was genuine. And I tried to inform what I was experiencing in a honest fashion.

: help, i'm stupid

ibook 700mhz 10.2.6 (5/2/2004, Version: r1v12)

Apparently our friend -Guido- is also using 10.2. I wonder if Guido read '10.2' as a requirement, as did I? Anyway, he apparently doesn't warrant any comments? Thus the comment on singling out.

Anyway, I'm happy that others are experiencing joy with an app that seems like fun. I can't get Panther currently (thus the search for FREE software). When I do get it, I'd like to try again.

I'm sorry that some are getting upset. But this isn't the first time that 10.2 was indicated for an app, here at MU - when in fact 10.3 was what was originally required. Or 10.3 became the 'new' original requirement posted.

ANDY MATUSCHAK  I'm a bit confused... I didn't mean to be snotty, if that's what it looked like in my response. We at Open Sword Group try to be ridiculously friendly and responsive to all feedback and comments on Pixen, so if I offended you, it was quite unintentional.

There's a pretty decent reason for why we require 10.3, though we know it alienates some users. There's only the three of us, and we're full-time students, yet Pixen is a huge program. Especially for this release, though also with past ones, we've found that we can move -so- much faster and add -so- many more features to the application if we require 10.3 because the Cocoa API was updated in Panther to make development much easier and more efficient. We make use of bindings and NSAlert panels extensively to speed up development, and both of those things are 10.3-only.

I don't know if it was my fault or MacUpdate's that Pixen was listed as requiring 10.2 - this actually happened at another download site, so it may very well have been mine. If that's the case, I apologize not only for the confusion but for your inability to use the application.

MAX  Thanx for explaining Pixen's reqs. I appreciate your consideration.

Regarding the mixup - like I mentioned before, this isn't the 1st time this has happened at MU. I don't believe that it's intentional or laziness, but more likely due to bulk of work. However, it has happened before with other apps offered here - thus the crankiness.

Anyway, when I can, I'd like to give Pixen a spin. Aqua is beautiful no question, but I still have a soft spot for pixel art.

Cheers.

JOE OSBORN  If you have downloaded Pixen r1v9 before 2004.01.22.21.45 CST, please re-download it as there are some pretty important bugs that we fixed in a minor version update uploaded at that time. Thanks, and sorry for the inconvenience. You'll know if your version of Pixen is OK if the release notes show an entry for version r1v9-2.

If you don't have the release notes anymore, you have a broken version of pixen if dragging a selection outside of the canvas results in a crash.

Thanks for your patience!
