MAULRAT  Does anyone else here get the blurry/pixelated icon issue? For myself its been a nightmare ever since 10.6.0 ... in fact I went back to 10.5.8 until today because I had thought 10.6.2 would resolve the issue but it hasn't. I don't know what the underlying problem is and neither do any others that have been discussing this issue over at Apple's support forums. I know this probably sounds like a nothing issue for most but with the amount of custom icons I create everyday its been quite a pain having to reboot anywhere from 10 - 20 times per day since that seems to be the only cure once icons go into "corrupt mode".

RICHARD HALLAS  Yes, I'm getting it ALL THE TIME and I was REALLY hoping that 10.6.2 would fix it. I don't know what the cause is (maybe some third party software?) but it's an absolute pain. A restart fixes it, but it comes back very, very quickly. I'm just putting up with it, but it's a major problem on my machine. A related problem is that some icons vanish completely (i.e. go totally invisible): I just get a blank space in the Finder window, the Dock, or in menus that should show small icons. It appears not to affect all icon sizes, and sometimes the icons may come back, especially if I cause the icons to be refreshed in the Finder somehow. But that doesn't always work. I'm a bit peeved to hear that this hasn't been fixed, as it's a huge visual problem that I'd think Apple would want to address.

MISHA  This seems like a rather esoteric issue, there are not many posts in Apple's discussions about it (I saw yours there, Maulrat). I take it you've tried deleting:

com.apple.dock.plist

com.apple.finder.plist

inside ~/Library/Preferences ?

If you have AppleCare, you might want to give them a shout. I never used to with software issues as I never felt they were very effective, but a recent 30 minute call tracked down and fixed a REALLY esoteric issue that I couldn't find any info on in Apple Discussions (why my MacBook Pro wouldn't hibernate -- it would run itself dead/off when the battery ran out).

DEMORAY  I've been experiencing the exact same issue since 10.6.1.

Like you, I create a ton of custom icons, which makes this minor issue a real pain.

I'm constantly logging out and back in to correct the display, (temporarily, of course).

Here's hoping 10.6.3 addresses this issue.

DAVIDSAN  I have seen the issue when you create custom icons only. For example when using CocoThumb. Icons were updated in SL and now are larger and richer. Icons created using those programs seem blurry. To solve the issue you have to delete all those icons created with third party utilities. Once you do that, the system will recreate the icons and you are good to go. CocoThumb, can be used for erasing the icons too.

MAULRAT  @umaroc: yep that was one of the first utilities I tried

@misha: yes, I deleted those prefs a few times in the past but it didnt help. :( I no longer have apple care either.

@richard hallas: we are definitely in the same boat ... a restart is just a quick cure but it doesnt seem to last long ... and the icon distortion is just so random that its hard to to pin down what the cause may be ... sometimes its just custom icons, sometimes it blurs out dock icons, sometimes (but rarely) it will happen inside an application. The app that it happens the most in with me is Automator, when I first open it and the window prompt asks me to "choose a template for your workflow" a majority of the times the service icon and the Image Capature Plug-In icons are pixelated/blurry/distorted (pick your favorite phrase) .... I also get the disappearing icon trick as well, once again mostly a random issue but a pain none the less.

MAULRAT  @Davidsan: Thats what I'm doing right now ... unfortunately this is probably going to take weeks to do because I have upwards of 100,000+ custom icons ... I'm just using the Zap Resource Fork script to wipe them out ... the issue is with the folder icons (as opposed to .icn files) I have to recreate each and every one of them ... yuk ... on the plus side though it seems to be freeing up tons of space ... 100 GB so far ... thanks.

JIMBLU  yelleko-- we have a couple of things in common -- 7.6 was where i started too, and i'm a long time photoshop user too. i feel your pain on this particular issue. mac is going through a transnational period for sure, but at the risk of upsetting other people i don't think this issue is all apple's fault. think about how long it took for micro$oft to get it together when they came out with a true 64-bit os. what fixed it for me was to do a clean install (i know that's one big hassle). and be very very careful about what third-party software you add until they catch up and come out with 64-bit software. i know this is age-old advice about the clean install -- and i'm not sure if mac minis are even 64-bit yet. still, i wouldn't recommend upgraded to snow leopard without doing a clean install because apple has rearranged many things and adobe has yet to catch up. really, being a long time adobe user -- many of their products -- i am just so disappointing that it seems they are making better software for windows nowadays and taking too much time keeping up with apple -- apple made adobe the mega-company it is after all. good luck and sorry i don't have better advice on this one.

MUDFLAPPER  I'm curious, did you do any research before installing Snow Leopard to make sure your apps were compatible first? I was worried about Adobe CS3 but I haven't had any issues, yet.

The only problem I've had is font related. I'm a designer so I always have problems with conflicts between Apple's fonts and my own Postscript Type 1 fonts when I make a major OSX upgrade.

Otherwise, Snow Leopard has been great. I especially like the quick shut down and boot times. :)

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  Lee123, there was an update several years ago that wiped a few people's drives. I doubt that would happen today, but it's worth the time to research the upgrade. Um, did you not notice all the talk about how logging into a guest account could totally and irretrievably wipe your main account on Snow Leopard?

That's the primary bug that 10.6.2 fixes. Seems not that far removed from the case you're talking about, so yes, it certainly can happen today.

SKYHORSE  I've had more work and problems with this upgrade than any in OS X--and I've been using OS X since 2002. I'm used to just cleaning my drive, backing up, and then loading the new version, which goes in clean, then cleaning up the drive again. Not this one. I did expect that some third party apps would need to be upgraded, and I've had to do that. One, Norton antivirus, still sends up a dozen failure alerts every time I boot on one of my two MacBook Pro's (configured the same, but no problems on the other one) because its settings won't stay locked--they unlock automatically eveyr time I boot on this laptop. I would much rather have been able to select Rosetta and the other options the first time around rather than having to go get them for a second round of installs. I've also had one of my laptops go to a default home screen and had to set that back up manually as well, and even reenter my email account passwords and some others to use them. Overall, it's taken a couple of days to get one of my two laptops mostly back to where it was, one day for the other--not the couple of hours max like earlier versions. This version very much reminded me of my last few Windows installs before I bagged it for Mac. So I'm not terribly impressed with the install. Performance? No apparent difference than before (except that Onyx for Snow Leopard is definitely faster).

ISLANDMACMAN  I am quite pleased with this upgrade.

Everything is faster; a few problems I've had with 3rd party software (Vue 6) have gone away, though a new issue with re-draws have cropped up.

The only negative things I see are the disappearance of Directory Access - the over-simplificiation of something like this is not a good thing in the world of Enterprise IT. Also the removal of Appletalk is problematic if you have an Appletalk only printer (though an external print server will solve this problem).

I am quite pleased with Snow Leopard so far, perhaps the minor things will get fixed over time.

LEV  Afraid I don't really get this "snappy Finder" compliment everyone's paying to SnoLe. I can't tell the difference. Perhaps I'm just too coarse-grained... but there is one little thing which annoys the hell out of me apart from the HP printer driver snafu, and that's Services. Yes, all well and good, but in System Preferences when you select which Services to activate you get NO WAY to tell which application "owns" which Service. "Make new clipping"? Yes, but to /what/? In the Services menu itself you get a little app icon, but that's a bit late in the day.

Not sure I like the was SnoLe apparently deprecates contextual menus, either. What with the various other little problems, SnoLe has scribbled up my workflow more than any previous point update, so it's rollback for me. First time I've ever done it. Lord, the shame.

C. SPENCER VAN GULICK  While the new finder, in particular, is finally as snappy as it ought always to have been, I'm sorry I upgraded to Snow Leopard. My office printer, an HP 2100TN LaserJet (PostScript 2, 1200 dpi, built like a brick) for which Snow Leopard drivers were included in 10.6 and again in 10.6.1 (and which Apple insists is a "supported" printer) does not communicate with my iMac without Appletalk - dropped in Snow Leopard - and three hours with two pleasant and earnest Apple experts at tech support could not get it working. So upgrading to Snow Leopard has truncated my office workflow, brought it to a standstill, with neither remedy nor workaround in sight. I still have the original Leopard installed on a second drive, from which Appletalk still successfully marries the 2100 to the computer. But with no printer I can't use Snow Leopard, so the purchase was a waste of money. Somebody was too cavalier about all the unsupported printers on the new system, and the "supported" printers like mine, which don't work either. Please don't install this on your primary drive without some research. The part that works for everybody is faster, but it can bring productivity to a screeching halt.

STILL_SPARKLING  Sorry, I think your review is a bit too harsh. You're giving the entire O/S upgrade a low rating just because you can't get your printer to work? I understand your frustration, but everyone knows that HP printer drivers are cr@p -- on both Mac and Windows. If I were relying on an old (but still functional) printer as a necessary part of my workflow, I would not upgrade to a new O/S without personally verifying it works. Even if the test builds of Snow Leo claim compatibility, HP drivers are so notoriously buggy/finicky, you can never trust them for any length of time.

You have my sympathy though. Good thing you made a backup of your Leopard drive.

LEV  @ STILL_SPARKLING: It's not that SnoLe doesn't support an old printer. It's that it says it DOES support it. By your argument, we shouldn't trust anything Apple says until we have personally verified it. Which may be a good point... I, too, have had to roll back to Leopard from SnoLe for the same reason. In this case the printer was 8 months old. I'm also not sure, forgive me, that I buy the "everyone knows HP drivers are flaky" argument. Again, it assumes that you need specialist knowledge to do what should be a simple consumer buying choice.

On my experience SnoLe is kind of okay but I'm putting it in a drawer and waiting for 10.6.3, I think.

ST00P!D M0NK3Y  My HP Printer wasn't working in Snow Leopard either until the "Apple HP Printer Drivers 2.2" was released in the Software Update. Now my HP printer works perfectly. There was an issue that had not been addressed upon the release of Snow Leopard.

Based on the date of your post, you weren't aware of this update yet...

Get it here ~> http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/28037/apple-hp-printer-drivers (this came out on the 21st)

Try this and see if your printer works, but don't give an entire OS 2 out of 5 stars over something so ridiculous. If anything, this is HP's fault for not having compatible drivers for their printers from the get-go that needed an update to be fixed. If you think 2 out of 5 stars is valid for an error on HP's part, stop making reviews.

BIOMAC  I bought this yesterday and installed it. I found the email could not search in entire messages. the printer was not working, which suggested me to contact the manufacturers. several third party softwares asked money for upgrading and previous free ones were not free any more. I did not feel my computer faster. I simply wanted to pay somebody to get rid of this copy from my computer, which drove absolutely crazy. this is the reason I am writing here. hopefully, it is helpful for those people who are hesitating at this moment.

AVIDMCUSER  What this update IS to me:

a) An excellent indication that apple is making efforts to quickly address and solve some of the problems introduced by a x.0 release

b) Further refinements to an operating system of and for the future. Perhaps not perfect today but it will get there progressively.

What this update IS NOT to me:

An ultimate and final fix for all issues users are experiencing. Although many, I have only experienced apparent issues with third party applications that may not yet be updated for Snow Leopard compatibility and prompt efforts from the developers would be appreciated and expected as we move forward.

DR. GIRLFRIEND  This update didn't fix:

1. The weirdness going on with Mail (unexpected multiple copies being generated)

2. Dock pinning items that I've selected for removal, like Launchbar.

3. Sound being turned off after Reboot or Sleep. (Fix: Go to System Preferences, Sound, Output, and re-select "Line Out".)

4. SMCFan Control is shut down at sleep or reboot and does not turn on again without manual intervention, even if you set it to load at startup.

This update has seemed to fix:

1. Issue with my Logitech Illuminated keyboard not being recognized/modifier keys not working. Seems to work fine now without the atrocious Logitech Control Center having to be installed.

2. Wacom drawing tablet (Intuos 3) not losing preferences after reboot or sleep.

I'll post updates as needed.

ANON BUD  Downloaded and installed the stand alone upgrade. No problems. So far so good!

Just be sure to back up your hard drive before any system software upgrade in case you run into any problems. I always run Super Duper and clone my disk to an external drive. This is addition to my Time Machine backups. It's also a good idea to download and install from the stand alone updater which you can find from the Apple downloads site rather than from software update, just in case some glitch in the process causes the download to stall!

DRG  I wish I could agree with most of the excellent reviews here, but I can't.

The original 10.6 release installation robbed me of my beloved HP 6MP printer. Since all my machines are now updated to 10.6.1, this printer will not work without the purchase of a print server, and even then, people have reported problems hooking this printer up. I could use a parallel to USP dongle but that won't allow sharing the printer over my wired ethernet setup. I would have to get an Airport to do this. So I had to buy a new printer. The 6MP might end up in the land fill. It's disgusting. And the installation caused a corruption of my sound preferences so that the sound level would not default to it's last level. I had to hunt on the internet to find out why. Before I installed, I confirmed that my director was sound, and my permissions were fixed, and rechecked them after installation.

With the 10.6.1 update, suddenly my internet connection went down. Happily just restarting everything made it come back but the fact that all this has to be done with these updates for Snow Leopard makes 10.6 the WORST OS X update so far in my experience.

What have I gained? Faster start up is all. And it cost me FAR MORE than the retail price of Snow Leopard.

DRG  To the person who decided that I should have reverted back to Leopard and that my buying a new printer was dumb: I don't know about you, but I sell my TIME. Do you realize the time it would take to do all this on ALL my machines? That would certainly be more expensive than just going to Quill.com, purchasing a printer and having it sent to my office overnight with free shipping. Maybe you have all day, but I don't. So don't call people dumb unless you know what you are talking about.

Re: sharing via USB, the HP 6MP does not have a USB port. I would (as I said) have to track down a Parallel to USB dongle, then attach it to my printer and then set up sharing. Again, this wastes time: ordering the dongle, waiting for it to arrive, etc. My work requires I have a printer ready and working. So, at the time, since it wasn't really known that such a dongle would really work, I did what I knew would work: a new printer.

My error was upgrading too fast. But Apple never really made clear (at least to me) that they were dropping AppleTalk.

JDUB800  You mention the time it would take to upgrade all of your machines? Did you not test it on one machine first? Do you not run cloning software on your machines to roll back 'bad upgrades'?

I also sell my time and even though I did a prompt upgrade, I made sure I had an escape route in case things went wrong. This is a good practice to follow. Sorry you had to buy a new printer... :/

DRG  1) Well, I performed the Snow Leopard conversion on my office Mac which has less critical items than my MacBook Pro. Then I discovered the problem, and did printer sharing until I got the new printer. The set up was not useful to me because in order to do print sharing, the host machine has to be one all the time and cannot go to sleep, and that's not possible in my office (the Pro must be put to sleep while I examine patients).

2) Yes, I did clone my MacBoo Pro, but not the office Mac because it doesn't have anything on it that I didn't have on my Pro. However, I sync calendars between the computers and my Touch. Returning to Leopard would possibly have caused some real headaches here will appointments suddenly disappearing so reverting back to Leopard was just not an option

3) The link to HP specifically states that for the HP 6MP its an update for the driver ONLY, and that AppleTalk is NOT supported anymore. The 6MP either uses parallel port technology or AppleTalk. Again. I would need to set up a print server, or use a dongle. All this was discussed at the time I made my decision on MacFixIt. I don't blame Apple entirely. HP has their hands dirty as well. But the printer notification by Apple was so off hand, that I think a lot of people got caught unawares.

ALBABE  I'm one of the poor folks who can't afford to update to an Intel yet (75% of all Mac Users). I bought the last generation of G5s 2 months before Apple stopped making PPC Processors. My friend that works at Apple obviously wasn't thinking when he convinced me that "Now was the time."

I work as a Writer and Artist in Comic Books and use my computer all day.

My computer is 3.5 years old and because of my Processor, I was only allowed one OS Upgrade from 10.4 (which came with my Computer) to 10.5.

With the last update, 10.5.7, I get beachballs when moving jpg files that result in a Finder Crash 3 to 5 times a day. I very rarely had Finder Crashes before.

My question is... Am I screwed?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I assume Apple will not be upgrading 10.5 again. Has Apple ever upgraded the previous OS once the next big thing is released?

JPW  I have a total of 5 Macs, one of which is an old PowerBook G4 - a PPC. I reverted to Tiger on this computer some time ago, and run OnyX regularly - this is absolutely and utterly essential in my experience. The machine continues to astound me with how well it runs; it remains quick and stable, and without issues. I suppose the software you require will determine the necessity of o.s. updates. For my relatively undemanding needs - a PhD student requiring not much more than word processing and internet - reverting to Tiger has served me more than adequately. My PPC machine is not greatly slower than my Intel Macs (MacBook Pro, iMac, MacBook Air).

ILGAZ  Snow Leopard has been built on Leopard (10.5) and it has some special system requirements.

I don't think Apple won't maintain 10.5 for a while, at least with security and driver updates. Just look to PC land, these people were offered everything to upgrade to Vista and they rejected. There are still people using XP all fine, some super modern netbooks coming with it already.

So, not having the latest OS won't kill you or your machine. You should see what some professionals use, I have recently saw OS X 10.2.8 running G5 which is used for very high end (Hollywood) audio editing.

Snow Leopard was definately needed for Intel 64bit CPUs since there are some strange things like 2x more registers when they run in pure 64bit mode. OpenCL like technologies and GPU decoding acceleration existed for years on Windows, even on XP so Apple had to package them to a "new" OS since it was getting really emberassing.

MELMAN FLINK  Update: I was able to get the printer working by changing its IP address and using the LDP protocol. Changing the IP of this series of printers is done via software. In my case, I used another Mac on the network that was running OS 9, and then downloaded Apple Printer Utility which let me talk to the printer and change its IP.

This can also be done via the Terminal but that's above my pay grade.

Interestingly the folks at Apple said this printer could not be used, even though it's listed as a supported model on their site. In any event, it's working like a champ now under Snow Leopard.

Happy ending.

DRG  According to document HT366: "If your printer can only use the AppleTalk protocol, the printer must be connected to, and then shared by, an appropriate AppleTalk-capable printer server." I have a trusty HP LaserJet 6MP printer. It is 12 years old, has printed over 50,000 copies without a single problem, and because of a decision on Apple's part, it's essentially headed to the land fill. Would it have been such a problem to allow us to add the AppleTalk Protocol as an option if we had a printer that needed it? BTW, this info was listed under the Apple printers, NOT the HP printers, so I upgraded without realizing the problem. It appears that the 6MP is supported BUT only via a print sharing situation. By the time you go out, find an appropriate print server and set it up, you might as well buy a new printer. My printer is critical for my business, so I purchased a new printer, but my ecology side is SO ANGRY at Apple for this stupidity, I could just slap Mr Jobs' face!

And even if there was a way to get it to run with Snow Leopard, the TIME involved makes it not worth the effort. What ever happened to PLUG AND PLAY??? Even with the new Brother printer I purchased, I had to download the drivers manually.

CLAUCLAU  Considering I've been using os x since 10.1 puma, I still have to say 10.3 was the fastest.

Beside spotlight doesn't work at all and won't find any invisible files. just try your own.

Whoever used 10.3 search function (no, not sherlock), knows what I am talking about.

Preview and Quicklook don't work with all the files. Only with very few.

I can't skip back and forth on the video preview so I either have to use quicklook or open Quicktime which can be annoying when browsing many files. Looks a small thing, but it is actually a big deal at the end of the day. People who are familiar with some serious workflow know.

ANYWAY I just want you to know that I never had any permission problems or any other sort after an update, well this is the first:

Tested with 2 macbooks late 2008 13": USB ports have lower power and devices can't connect properly right after updating to 10.5.8, previously it was ok. As stuff was and still is always plugged in. Just try to connect a mouse or an hard drive and you'll see.

RONL  Just installed Combo 10.5.9.

Be forewarned that the installation may appear to stall near the end (mine appeared to hang for around 15 minutes when showing in the progress bar that it should have completed in just 2 more minutes).

Be patient if this happens and allow it complete. Other wise you may end up with a major problem on your hands.

My best guess after using Macs for more than a decade professionally is that this is the standard bug regarding progress bars (i.e Apple's progress bars have been inaccurate very often for a very long time) and that the actual installation has probably not hung.

No problems so far with this new version.

SJK  It used to be more worthwhile to visit VT when it listed products that weren't also on MU, but that number has steadily declined since the C/NET assimilation. For me the only advantage of VT over MU is being able to filter by version, which is convenient for checking release notes (if they exist) for previous versions.

SOLO68  I spoke with an Apple Representative earlier today. He told me there was an update available. I told him, "Thank You. The last time I checked was on Sunday. Furthermore, before installing the Apple update his instructions were as follows:

NOTE: I told him I needed to log in to my admin account, and he didn't object or say it wasn't necessary.

1) Use disk utility to Repair Permissions on Macintosh HD.

NOTE: This step was taking some time and the Apple Rep briefed me on the remaining steps and we ended the call.

2) Use my Apple Install DVD to run verify/repair disk on Macintosh HD.

a) Insert DVD.

b) Shutdown computer.

c) Hold down C key on keyboard.

d) Start computer.

e) Select language. (by the way, it take a while for the language selection screen to pop up, so be patient while holding down that C key)

f) Click Utilities on the Menubar and select Disk Utility.

g) Run repair disk utility on Macintosh HD and quit, restart from Macintosh HD startup disk.

Note: At this stage, the Mac should be restarted and logged back in to an admin account.

3) Choose Software Update from the Apple menu in the Menubar.

The rest is guided by the update application.

DISCLAIMER:

Use this as a guideline. If you update your Apple software differently and have no trouble, fine. I only offer my method as a suggestion. I haven't found any problems with my system after installing the 10.5.7 update. Nonetheless, I am not employed or trained by Apple, so use this guideline at your own risk. I assume no responsibility for any damage it may cause. But my Mac works fine. Also, I have reinstalled my Mac OS, on my own. I still am computing, trouble free. And it has been less than six months since I first purchased my first Mac. But I think I am getting the hang of it, I came from PC land. Best wishes.

MISHA  This is definitely prudent advice, although by no means necessary. I have run OS X updates w/o repairing permissions before/after without issue. But then again, I've done it w/ repairing permissions before/after, as well.

As part of general preventive maintenance, things like disk permissions, repair/verify disk, and third party tools like Drive Genius, TechTool Pro, or DiskWarrior should be run monthly.

ILGAZ  Let me try using Windows terminology. Software update install process runs as "Administrator" and there is no way it will be hit by any wrong permissions. It can't and will not care who owns what file or if file is read only. If you have used Linux before, it is more like "Root" power, even higher than "Super User" in terms of access.

Also thanks to part of how files handled, deep down the system, even "open" files can be updated. They will get updated on disk but yet on not memory until they are closed. It is one of the major reasons why OS X doesn't need that much reboot (except such kernel etc. updates).

"Repair Permissions" is actually a "User level" fix and also a security proactive solution. It makes sure that critical system files aren't writable by normal users (and non authenciated admins), they aren't "world shared" and yet regular users can read/execute them. So, it really makes sense to repair permissions after OS X update as Apple may have changed couple of things and stupid companies like Adobe doesn't know the right permissions for plugins but that is all.

Apple miscalculated some kind of sync and/or prebinding timing so it would be better to "offline install" (from another boot disk or OS X boot DVD, if possible) for this update. This update only, 10.5.7. Not 10.5.8 or whatever ships later.

ILGAZ  (can be PPC only)

Guys, I think one should give it 10 mins or 15 mins before pressing "Restart" button on installer as there is something going on with spotlight syncing and/or kextcache process.

On 3 different powerpc macs (quad to mini), I have lived some sort of loginwindow endless loop and it was fixed if I gave it some time after "Installation Finished" and waited for mds/kextcache/mdworker processes do their jobs.

It shouldn't be needed, I know but I thought I better share this experience.

BILL DAWSON  I have two MacBooks here - and both will lock up if put to sleep by closing the lid with Mail.app + Safari open.

One has Safari 3.2.3 and the other has the 4.0 beta.

If we close one or the other (Mail.app or Safari), we're ok. But EVERY TIME I close one of these laptops with both Mail.app and Safari running, we have to reboot.

Maybe it only effects MacBooks?

Maybe it only effects mine?

Maybe its unrelated?

I have tested with only Mail.app open and with only Safari open. Both tests functioned fine.

I will try to regress the bug further when I have time and report my experience.

MAC5  Software update had three attempts at downloading this update. Each one failed about one third of the way through the process.

I eventually went to MacUpdate and downloaded the combo update as a dmg image which i installed without any problems.

Something definitely wrong with the software update process.. First time since about 1985 that I have encountered this problem with a basic OS update from the Apple site.

The update is running well without and known problems so far. None of my third part apps are crying foul or crashing in any way at this time. Hopefully this will still be the case this time tomorrow.

Apple OS updates generally improve your OS about 90% of the time - especially if you are running a newer type Mac.

So far, so good.

AVIDMCUSER  I also had software update troubles. After an extremely slow 31.3 Mb software update thought it had completed and asked for a restart. after preparing for installation, no progress and i had to force restart. upon restarting software update was unable to find an update server the first time. after a second attempt fewer items were shown in the update list although no updates such as QT, iTunes etc had actually installed (only downloaded at the first attempt). After downloading any remaining updates (not 10.5.7 update) preparing to install failed again and sat at 'preparing' for 20 minutes before giving up and force restarting once again. All of this happened after a fresh clean format / install. I will re-install 10.5.2 from my intel imac disks and hope for better luck. :(

Now it is smooth sailing and I haven't had an issue yet. MACUPDATE ADMIN  Notice: Suitcase and Mac OS X 10.5.6 Update

Extensis has received reports, indicating that Suitcase Fusion (v12.1.7) failed to run under Mac OS X 10.5.6, Apple's most recent System Update.

The cause of this was found to be an issue with Bonjour (formerly "Rendezvous") networking technology that is a part of Mac OS X. Changes to Bonjour networking in Mac OS X 10.5.6 resulted in a condition where Suitcase Fusion would fail to open.

To workaround the problem, users should shorten their computer's Bonjour name. For information on how to do this, see the following knowledge base article: Article # 7902230 - http://www.extensis.com/en/support/kb_article.jsp?articleNumber=7902230

KR8ZEDKAS  i didnt up-grade yet to 10.5.5 but a tip to maybe help with your video play back on cnn &other sites that use flash video, did you try yet downloading the beta flash player from adobe?

it is free &i think a finished version is comming soon but my friend tipped me off to trying it,even the old beta months ago &can say its like 1000 times faster for every site with flash for me.

these days so many sites use flash for ad banners also &i never realized before with flash version 9 of how bad it slowed my mac down!

don"t know if that will fix your problem but if you have not gotten it yet I surely would recommend trying it. its free but if I remember right you have to sign up for a free account on the adobe web site to get access. but its fast &easy &I"m not even sure if you have to do it any more. and if it doesnt work for you you can always download their flash un-install program &re-install the normal version 9 thats out right now

this is the mac 10.5.5 thread &dont want to go to much off topic but i think it is very related &i had the exact problem you do & this fixed it

so try going to their web site called ADOBE LABS at http://labs.adobe.com

download the FLASH 10 beta or release candidate they call it now I think. but also download the FLASH UN-INSTALLER that is harder to find but is here at

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/uninstall_flash_player_osx.dmg

adobe says its very important to run the un-installer FIRST &then run that new flash 10 installer. then try going to cnn or where ever &hopefully it will be very much faster. sorry every one for this long reply. just hopeing it helps the poster &may be some other people

JAN13  @@@ I am reading about problems here and there ... It has to be understood, that installing update of OS requires removing hacks and other junk from OS to make OS clean.

This 10.5.5 update swing system very well and it is perfect update. As I write this comment we have this update today morning on all of our G5 systems and three 17 inch powerbooks and all runs 100% perfect.

It will be unfair to star this OS update with low rating since this is a pinnacle of OS we have up to date on our Mac system.

Anyhow. This OS is absolutely five star candidate.

RINCKER  - open file from open-menu crashes ID, have to double-click in finder

- ID autohides from time to time and doesn't unhide anymore

- multiple opened documents lead to unexpected crashes

- in order to use the print or export menu I have to launch ID then open a new document, then print, save as PDF and go back again and close the new file. then it will work for some time. After every relaunch. It isn't a big deal but it's annoying.

- you cannot use spaces with CS3

- Photoshop crashes and corupts font-caches -> Font-Nuke -> restart system.

That's what i meant. I hoped that Apple would fix it more with 10.5.5 but it's the same as in 10.5.4.

MISHA  I don't use ID much so I haven't noticed those problems... I have had issues with PS in the past, but a clean install of CS3 fixed it. Never had the font issue, but I had the problem where PS wouldn't open PNGs because it "wasn't a supported file type" (right). I suppose you've tried clean installing CS3 again? Given that the blog post notes that it's a "relatively small percentage" I'm not sure it's fair to claim that CS3 doesn't work with 10.5, it's obviously the case with just certain configurations. Still, that's a bummer about your problems.

DRG  The 10.5.5 update was troubled for me. I repaired permissions and did a disk verify prior to downloading and installing. After downloading, the machine would not restart on its own. Had to force quite, restart, and noticed that the update was not installed. Restarted again and the download was installed.

Re-repaired permissions. Now two SUID files: "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool" and "usr/bi/lppasswd" apparently have been modified and will not be repaired. All seems okay although like previous updates like this, my iCal was popping up warnings from BusySync that there are problems which need to be fixed.

This was a messy update.

ALBABE  I agree with TIM27 ... Almost everything on 10.5.4 is slower than on 10.5.3... and 10.5.3 is so much slower than 10.4.11.

I get Beachballs and a frozen desktop constantly... Safari and Word and Yahoo IM crash or freeze more than just a few times a day.

Dictionary is ridiculously slow... and it persistently gives me it's silly Intro/ad page for a few seconds every time it starts up.

I figured all my problems were stemming from using APE/WindowShade (which I blame on Apple for having in OS 9 and then dropping from OS X), but from a lot of the reviews I've read on the net, it seems a lot of people are having similar problems.

It's also very annoying to me that you can't lose the sidebar in 10.5, and still keep the very useful buttons at the top of the window (Path etc.) The 1.5 inch sidebar loses lots of real estate on a desktop.

Two, Blizzard _did_ try to fix it, but it was out of their power to fix without re-writing a ton of the code for 5+ year old games. NAMAN  These 5+ year old games are still extremely popular games. What's more important, the modern game 500 people play, or the 5 year old game 5000 people play? The whole reason this is an issue to people like me is because a lot of my friends play D2 and SC online, and so do I.

And the problem is not old hardware, it's new hardware. This only effects Intel macs, and mostly the more recent ones. However, the games worked fine until 10.5.3, due to Apple's arbitrarily removing 256 color support from the graphics drivers for several cards with no warning.

Mac OS X to 10.5.3 Upgrade Warning

----------------------------------

The Apple Mac OS X client upgrade to 10.5.3 introduces a severe

problem, which has been reported by customers and reproduced by

HELIOS.

We strongly recommend not to upgrade to 10.5.3 until a solution to the

problem is available.

Images saved from Photoshop CS3 can get corrupted visually (stripes or

similar in the image) or even structurally so that they cannot be

opened again in Photoshop or another application.

HELIOS can reproduce this problem with Photoshop CS3. According to

customer reports, also other CS3 applications seem to be affected.

The problem occurs with Apple based AFP servers as well as with HELIOS

EtherShare.

We will update this tech-info when new information is available.

Best regards,

Mac OS 10.5.3 Issues

We have just been made aware that there are issues with 10.5.3 Client. Primarily with PhotoShop and InDesign saving files.

After installing the update saving files will corrupt the file.

If the update has been installed the workaround is to "Save As"

This looks to be an issue with saving both locally and across the network.

We strongly recommend against upgrading any client machines to 10.5.3 until this issue has been resolved.

GPATPANDP  Just a follow up to my post the other day...I did everything possible in running every disc utility I own/possess (ie Tech Tool Pro, Disc Warrior, Cocktail) and I even acquired Apples own Service Diagnostic DVD and completely ran every test. Despite this fact, every test I performed passed and cleared any possible relationship to my machines hardware or existing software as I continued to experience frequent system stalls (blue screen lock up) while either restarting or shutting down after updating to OSX 10.5.3. Upon erasing my hard drive and transferring over from my firewire back the exact same system though still of the previous 10.5.2 OSX version, I am back up and running flawlessly. I resent the very brief and ineffective conversation I had upon indentifying this issue with an Apple Care technical support representative the other day. I tried in ernest to express that this problem was unique in my updating to the latest OSX 10.5.3 release, though she was dead set on wanting to attribute it to something on my end thereby justifying the $50 fee. Well at the very least this proves I knew what I was talking about and I am glad that I did not succumb to needlessly pouring my own money down the drain

GPATPANDP  Since updating to OSX 10.5.3 the other day, my iMac G5 20" iSight model is "freezing" at times (sometimes it does this other times it performs as it should) on restart meaning the computer begins to boot down though locks up once the finder and dock disapear and a solid blue screen remains. This seems quite odd as I never had this problem with either the original release nor the previous updates (10.5.1 & 10.5.2). I have been to the Apple support forums and noticed that there is an insruction for what appears to be a similar issue though the one caveat is that upon stalling at restart or shutdown, the machine will boot up upon forcing it to quit when pressing the on/off on the back. Has any one else encountered this issue since performing the new 10.5.3 up date ? Apple won't help me as they claim it can be either a hardware OR software issue and therefore unless a shell out the $50, I am on my own :(

BOUSOZOKU  Leopard itself has many features, though the count itself doesn't seem $129 worth. For most people, an unintrusive backup is worth $129, though. 10.5.3 is what Apple should have shipped from the start.

At the initial installation, I was surprised to find that the performance was horribly slow compared to 10.4.10. Things were taking 5 times as long to finish, even though the user interface was very responsive.

Personally, I had to upgrade a number of applications with new versions as they would not work consistently for the first time since Mac OS X v. 10.1.x. Other applications were dead.

The firewall was a sieve, only giving the impression of security.

10.5.3 is where it starts to work properly. This is the point where Apple should have used as a retail starting point. They still have much to fix, apparently. Performance is definitely one of those things, as it appears the performance is about half the speed of what 10.4.10 was able to do.

MARKBAILEY747  OS X 10.5.3 is just as problem free as 10.5.2. I only experienced one issue while running under either two operating systems which is that when I mirror my boot drive to create a duplicate/backup copy, the backup copy requires that the "redo pre-binding" command be executed and then the computer rebooted before the backup drive functions without experiencing failure during most program launch efforts. This problem may not be one that derives from the system OS, but I was hoping that the problem would have been sorted by the update.
