DANA SUTTON Sorry to have that "typical American entitled attitude" but I'm afraid I do. Apple's motto, after all is "it just works" , so let's dispense with the anti-Americanism and call it a "typical Mac-owner entitled attitude." Truth is, although the "won't start" bug seems to be settled, in Snow Leopard Smart Scroll is still very erratic. It mysteriously works with some programs some of the time but not with all of them all the time. Sometimes it refuses to work with this program, now with that one, in what seems like an entirely unpredictable way. Sometimes it works for a while with a given program and then mysteriously stops working. Its entirely unreliable. This just isnt right, I dont see why we have to live with this situation. Lets hope the developer can finally solve his problems. (Version 3.3)

GCOGHILL I'm curious about this as well, especially since APE seems to have only very recently been officially supporting 10.5. (Version 3.2b1 SL)
| Sep 10 2009 |
GCOGHILL I emailed the developer about the APE situation, and received this reply (& permission to post his answer): Your negative opinion of APE is not based on facts. Some programs which use APE (such as most versions of Smart Scroll) might have errors in them which cause crashes or other problems, but APE itself is necessarily rock solid because of the depth at which it is installed in the system. A problem with APE itself would be immediately obvious, as in your Mac not starting at all. This happened *once* a few years ago, because of inadequate version checking that resulted in some people running a long outdated version. Unsanity has prevented this from occurring again by adding better version checking and an automatic updater. To put this one problem in perspective, remember that Mac OS X itself had similar accidents over the years, such as the infamous Panther FireWire bug which caused actual data loss. Loud and unwarranted negative comments about APE have only succeeded in making life unnecessarily difficult for Unsanity, as well as reducing their incentive to update APE for new versions of Mac OS X. This in turn has hurt thousands of Mac users who enjoy using the products APE makes possible. To answer your question, no, Smart Scroll does not use APE on 10.6, since APE is not available for 10.6. If and when a version becomes available, I'll likely switch Smart Scroll back to use it, provided it is still the best tool for the job. (Version 3.2b2 SL)
| Sep 10 2009 |
DANA SUTTON Sheesh! That's kind of sad. Speaks for itself, doesn't it? (Version 3.2b2 SL)

GCOGHILL Not sure what you mean, sounds like a good reason to use APE from the devs perspective. Personally I have never seen any weirdness resulting from either APE or Smart Scroll, so not really all that concerned with it if the developer thinks it's safe or better than his own implementation. (Version 3.2b2 SL)

DOOBIEXX Actually I found the culprit to be "Scroll Faster" under the main tab, appropriately named, "Super Scroll." The app continually goes back to 1x and not what I leave it on... around 7-8x. Disabled that part with the click of the checkbox and others seem fine.. at least coasting and what I have tried so far. Had to go into the trackpad section of the system preference pane and put scrolling on max speed until this issue can be fixed... hopefully just a temporary fix and smart scroll will start to work again. *crossing fingers* (Version 3.1.3)

ROBOTANK I love Smart Scroll and have been using it for a long time. However, I've had to disable it recently because it seems to be causing Safari to crash (4.0.2). Turning off Smart Scroll eliminated all of these crashes. RICHCASTILLO I refuse to use my MacBook without this program. It is no exaggeration to say that this is an absolute must have for MacBook users, as you can throw your screen just like in the iPhone. OSX updates occasionally break it. Not the developer's fault and they have been VERY quick to issue fixes but the pain of not having this app working for even an hour is enough to make me put my MacBook away. Guess, that's a backhanded compliment. What would make this even better than perfect is if I could somehow throw the window with my Wacom tablet on the MacPro. | Jan 31 2009 |
GCOGHILL Smart Scroll requires Application Enhancer to be installed in order for it to run. And note that the "exclude" list for Smart Scroll is actually the list of applications it is enhancing. An excluded app will have a red line through it's name in the list. The developer is great and if you have any questions, just drop him a line. (Version 2.8.8)

MRCHIPS After I upgraded to Leopard, SmartScroll stopped working. It's been some time coming but I'm happy to report that v2.8 is working fine on my computer now. The previous release had a few issues - it sort of worked... So far v2.8 is great! Thanks to the developer for taking the time to get it working on Leopard! I really missed it! (Version 2.8)

TUISHIMI Same as previous poster. I am running 10.5.2. No go. I reverted to the previous beta version. It could be a bad build? When I reinstalled from an older version it required my password. This installer did not. (Version 2.7.5)

BILLY THE BIKER This seems to have broken with the Leopard update. I love this app, but I'm getting a little wary of APE also, as it seems to have caused some problems with installation of Leopard on quite a few computers world wide. The forums are filled with complaints. (Version 2.7.2)

EASER I've been using Unsanity and APE programs for over 4 years. (PowerBook G4) In all that time, I have never once had a single problem with either. For that matter, SmartScroll hasn't given me any problems, either. I'm not sure why other people like to express such distrust in these. (Version 2.7.1)

BITURBO27T I've got to agree with ANTONIONG. I bought this, because I LOVED it, but then started having problems with APE and disabled it. I'm hoping that the developer either figures out a different way to implement this, or Apple adds this functionality in Leopard. I'm out $19, but no big deal. I may try it again later on my MB Pro which isn't my production Mac. But for me a stable machine is more important than some eye candy and neat tricks ;) (Version 2.7.1)

BILLY THE BIKER Just ran into a problem with 2.6. I am unable to use the scroll ball on a Mighty Mouse to scroll UP. Left and right and down work fine. I have reinstalled, trashed prefs and restarted to no avail. I even reversed the X an Y axis direction, same thing. Doesn't work in any app or browser. I miss this app already. I got used to it in 2 days. (Version 2.6)

BILLY THE BIKER The comment below has NOTHING to do with the software. After an email to the developer, who answered even though on the road, I cleaned the Mighty Mouse with compressed air and it runs even smoother now. This is a great app and a concerned developer.

STORMCHILD Smart Scroll was one of my essential add-ons in the classic Mac OS, adding proportional scroll thumbs, live scrolling and general scrollwheel support before it was built into the system. Mac OS X handles all of these things on its own, so there really isn't a need for Smart Scroll in OS X -- or so I thought, until I tried it. Smart Scroll X is really a different product altogether, and adds several very welcome features for scrolling in OS X apps. The $20 price tag seems a bit high for what it does, but this is quality software that works very well. The scrolling in OS X ain't broke, but I'm still glad someone fixed it. Try it; you might be surprised. (Version 2.1)

COLOURGRAVITY This latest update seems to have fixed all the problems I had with the previous version. No more crashes with Rosetta apps after disabling the Rosetta cache (I can live with the slight consequent delay in opening some apps), and scrolling works just as advertised. Great. I'd have bought this for the addition of scrolling in Filemaker 7 alone, but it's also made a big improvement to overall ease of use that's well worth the price to me. (Version 2.0b5)

JUKI Works really beautifully.....installed without issues. Scrolling is smooth as silk, fast and very easy to control. I'd say Smart Scroll X moves the scrolling experience to a whole new level. Whether one uses one's mouse's scroll wheel or computer's hot keys(called "scroll keys")for scrolling, this puppy works as slickly as a Swiss watch. I'm using OS 10.3.9. (Version 2.0b5)

COLOURGRAVITY Comments apply to Smart Scroll on a Mac Pro. I love the effortless scrolling, and it makes a big difference to be able to scroll in Filemaker 7 at last but, unfortunately, I have too many clashes with Rosetta apps (apps crashing or refusing to open) to be able to keep Smart Scroll running. I can fix the problem temporarily by running the Rosetta tune-up included with the Smart Scroll installer, but I have to run it again it every time I re-open any of the affected apps, and that's just not practical. I've paid for Smart Scroll in the hope that this problem will be resolved in future versions, because - when it works - it's something that really does make navigating through pages easier and more fun. EASER You really, really need to try this! The Super Scroll feature is an interesting way to scroll. The first time I tried it, it took me by surprise. I gave my scroll wheel just a slight turn, and it was like perpetual motion just took over. It's smooth and stays well in control. This is a very nice update. (Version 2.0b1)

CARL789 I have never been able to get it to work on a dual G5 2.0, under MacOSX 1.4.xx, not at all. The scroll wheel still does not work with Filemaker, whick is why I was buying it. (Version 1.3.2)
