STEVEN GOODHEART Thanks for the addition of the ability to disable Mail.app's option to auto-include names in copied addresses. That's so annoying, and it's great I can now disable it. I have (and occasionally use) Onyx, TinkerTool System, and Cocktail but I still find that MacPilot is my favorite utility in terms of the interface, number of features, and ease of use. Also, MacPilot seems to be adding features and refinements at a much quicker pace than these others. I"d hate to have to choose between MacPilot and TinkerTool System, though. They are both terrific. Try them both out and see which one you grok better, but for my money, MacPilot is the best of the bunch. (Version 3.4.5)

OAK I just downloaded the latest 11MB MacPilot update. From hitting "Install Update" to actually using it- 4 minutes 20 seconds. I am still using Tiger 10.4.11, so I would suspect the problem is not with Koingo, but rather with your OS. I have four of their products on my machine, have never experienced problems with any of them, and am about to add a fifth. Koingo Apps are among the best I have found. (No, I do not work for them, nor do I know anyone at that company.) (Version 3.4.1)

CHAS_M Love this software, dunno what's up the trolls' butts with their nonsense complaints. Don't like the price, DON'T BUY IT. Simple really. Now sod off. Anyway, love the software, but I do have one complaint: get a better hosting service, guys. Your website loads slowly, and your downloads are simply ABYSMAL. 11KB/sec?? That's soooo 90s. This is not a fluke; I've faithfully downloaded updates every time a new one appears, and it's always the same. Other downloaded updates from other companies (for example, today's Rogue Amoeba update) FLY in. It's going to take **15 MINUTES** to download a 11MB file. I'm downloading 10.6.1 as I type this, and the first 11MB came in in under five seconds. You gotta fix this, or at least cough up some mirrors! (Version 3.3.5)

KOINGO SOFTWARE The software, according to our testing, is already Mac OS X 10.6 ready. If you are encountering any problems, please report them via the support form on our web site. Also, if you have suggestions on how to improve the GUI, by all means, do let us know. With over 900 features (100s more than the nearest competitor), you will find yourself hard pressed to find a better way to present the features. As for the comment about being a Windows-rooted developer, Koingo Software was Mac-first in 1994, and it has been our primary operating system right through today. Our entire staff are running MacBooks and MacBook Pros, and use Windows under emulation only to test the PC computerparts a select few of our titles have. (Version 3.3.2)

STEPHANCORLEY One could ask him self why he would pay for such software. I mean, there are several free tweak programs and most are even much much better. MP GUI is just too messy. Many possibilities are a good thing but if there are all punched inside a not user friendly UI it is game over for me. It is also clear the programmer has roots as a Windows developer. Not one thing in this GUI is remotely connected to OS X guidelines ! ! It also doesn't work very well under OS X 10.6 (10A411 build). All sort of errors appear. Seeing most available software today already works 100% on 10.6 it makes you think why this doesn't. Hackie programming comes to mind. For exaqmple Onyx and iTweax works perfect under OS X 10.6 Paying for this ? No way! Onyx, Tinkertool and iTweax are much much better and FREE ! (Version 3.3.2)

CHAWYA22 I contacted the developer back in Jan 2009 to confirm that run all cron scripts was actually working correctly or not. At that time, MacPilot ran all three scripts in less than 10 seconds (with a password prompt after each individual script). Cocktail takes roughly 5 minutes, the same amount of time as to manually run all cron scripts from the command line. The developer contacted me and confirmed that MacPilot's speediness was suspicious and they would investigate further. Since that time, I've seen many updates and many new features added but no confirmation that the cron scripts are working as they should. Currently, MacPilot runs all three scripts in well under a minute (with no password confirmation after each script...Thanks). New features are nice, but It would still be nice to know that it's doing the job it claims to do. (Version 3.3.2)

CTKMND Remove unused preferences doesn't work in Leopard... Pity since I can't find any other that does that. Documentation would be a requirement for me if I were to pay $20 for this. KOINGO SOFTWARE Features which do not work in other versions of Mac OS X are automatically hidden. We were unaware the Unused Preferences feature was broken. We will investigate this immediately. As for documentation, each preference in the General tab (over 850 features there) has a help tag associated with it (appears in the yellow bar). For which features are you looking for additional documentation? (Version 3.3)

KOINGO SOFTWARE After further testing, the Erased Unused Preferneces feature seems to work fine under Leopard. Can you please elaborate on the problem you are experiencing? (Version 3.3)
| May 20 2009 |
CTKMND Thank you for replying! Clicking 'Scan' in Unused Preferences and nothing happens. It just sits there and there's no related activity on the hard disk as far as I can tell. It's like the command in the script isn't found or something. Is there some runtime library missing? Don't know what more to say unfortunately. Also, something I've longed for that finally showed up in the news features-section, "Downloaded App Warning" - it doesn't do anything when I try to check the box. I.E. not possible to change the state of it. Finally, the yellow box info is good but often sparse at best. A more thorough description of what happens in your system would be good in a seperate documentation. Especially in days like these... ;) Using MacPilot 3.3.1 and Leopard 10.5.7. (Version 3.3.1)

EASER I haven't used this. It certainly looks to be very helpful. But what I want is a program that forces the Finder to remember column width settings in Finder windows and to force any new window (with column view) to have a predetermined column with setting. I've seen nothing like this. I use PathFinder because it does allow me to do both (not to mention that it gives me icon and font sizes that I can actually see). Anyone know of any program that does to the Finder what I want? I've certainly tried programs that restore window settings, but not one of them actually restores the column widths to what I had set. They always go immediately to the minimalist default setting. (Version 3.1.7)

MACNEWS [Please allow me to preface my comments with the fact that I have thoroughly enjoyed the use of this, and other, Koingo products; this being the first real issue I've had with any of them.] That said, however, Splunk23's 'system hosing' -- though I'm not sure the cause was the same -- happened to me in LEOPARD -- glutton for punishment that I am -- three straight times (Mac Pilot 2.4). I've not tried subsequent version revisions, being a bit gunshy at the moment; but the issue seems to have been related to the enabling of NewReno. This has not been an issue in the past. The problem did not begin until I restarted my machine. It became stuck in an endless boot-loop, which no amount of single-user damage control was able to correct. While I'm sure not everyone will be able to replicate this problem, it *is* there. I am a customer of you as long as I possess a Mac. I had never anything to regret or to complain. But today I have to find, that there suddenly seem some comments that critizise Mac Pilot seem simply to vanish. The author had claimed some conspiracy that I did not really believe. But his last comment were not unreasonable and he had backed up his claims with some error messages. May I ask, why this posting suddenly vanished too instead of posting an answer? I can understand, that this customer perhaps was too angry and had some issue with you (or you with him), but simply deleting posts instead of answering is not a very friendly or professional behavior. And I asked -- for instance -- that the author claimed network problems under Tiger whereas you answered, that you had not any problem under Leopard. I mentioned that you answer was not paying attention to the poster as the platform was not right. Furthermore I asked if there is really any issue with Mac Pilot under Tiger? No answer from you so far.

KOINGO SOFTWARE While there have been a couple Leopard bugs which have needed to be fixed, the bulk of the updates are to add new Leopardy features! We'd rather get these out the door right away, than have users wait for months between releases. We fix bugs in the application as quickly as possible, and considering the nature of the application, we believe it is better to have those fixes in the hands of users as soon as possible instead of having potential hazards existing out in the open for prolonged periods of time. Before each release, we do our best to check compatibility with both Mac OS X 10.4 and 10.5, and are not aware of any current incompatibilities. Mac Pilot is safe to use on both Leopard and Tiger. The only note for concern is users who are manually editing their Advanced Network Settings. Quite simply put, if you don't know what you're doing, use one of the network optimization presets, or don't edit them at all! Please heed the warning on that panel. Changing socket sizes, and timeouts too low can cause your applications to stop responding and even prevent a boot. Please do some research before plunking in new numbers for fun! Keep in mind that even as user friendly that we've made Mac Pilot, there are some features like Advanced Network Settings, which should only be tinkered with by users with an expert understanding of the values they're changing. (Version 2.4.4)

MACNEWS I've used some of the non OS X-default RFC's and NewReno without issue for quite some time; and my subsequently improved network performance has led me to continue this practice; long prior to the introduction of Mac Pilot which, I might add, I find to be the best OS X system maintenance utility available. I don't believe that Leopard has changed significantly enough under the hood so as to render my OS install inoperable when it comes to these particular network settings; settings which I've safely used for quite a while, and now use via Mac Pilot, which makes adjusting these values much more convenient. What I am NOT trying to do is demean your product, nor scare anyone away from using it. I believe most are aware that some pitfalls and anomalies are to be expected with the introduction of a new OS, along with corresponding third-party compatibility upgrades and new feature additions. My point in posting my problem was to hopefully get to the bottom of the issue so that I can continue to use Mac Pilot as my maintenance utility of choice, rather than having to resort to other means in order to adjust some of these settings. It would seem from my vantage point that the problem stemmed more from the actual *trigger* for implementing NewReno, than the actual setting itself, as I have been able to successfully utilize this, and other, options via IPNetTuner with no adverse side-effects; though I would *much* rather be able to accomplish this, and my other maintenance wants/needs via one utility, hence my selection of Mac Pilot. In summary, my intent was not to criticize, but to get to the bottom of the problem, while attempting to help those who might be experiencing the same issue to avoid any unnecessary and frustrating redundancies. SPLUNK_23 I hope enough people saw the important information before it was deleted. At least chin knows I'm not making things up. And of course I was upset. I had to reinstall Mac OS X, something that shouldn't have to be done (unless by choice). I also would like to make it clear. I did not use the "Advanced" network settings. In fact I didn't even change anything. All I did was open up Mac Pilot and noticed that "Optimize for Broadband" was no longer there, only the text that says it is automatically configured now. At that point my Internet connection no longer worked. When I restarted my Mac, it never made it to the login window and there was some messages in verbose mode about a network socket error configuring IPv4 and IPv6. Yes, I called the developer an A*****e. It's his fault I had to reinstall Tiger. And that was only after his attitude that chin also pointed out. I said that it made Tiger non-functional and he replies that it works fine on Leopard…!? By deleting every post I make, you are only increasing the odds that it happens to someone else. You can't remove the memories of the previous posts form other readers heads, nor from other sites. I can make new accounts here until the cows come home too and keep informing people of this malicious software and to be cautious when using version 2.4 - Mac Pilot is a great program with more features than anything else like it, but it does have one serious issue that will hopefully get fixed soon. And a message to the Admin: Just because you didn't have to reinstall Tiger after using Mac Pilot does not make my accusation false. But as far as being a conspiracy, prove me wrong and don't delete this! (Version 2.4.4)

BRUCE_Y Still runs on Tiger. Dev says tiger versions will be supported till 4qtr 2008. But now improvement focus will be leopard. So some new added features will not work on Tiger - since they need the Leopard OS to work. Note that other Mac maintenance and UI tweaking tools also have a similar arrangement in that some feature 'buttons' or tweaks only work on specific OS X system versions. Have Mac Pilot user interface 'gray out' or otherwise indicate leopard items that do not work in Tiger. Even better, have it read the user's OS version, so these items automatically work, or don't, as appropraiate. This to avoid confusion of those folks who may think that by running new MacPilot, they can turn on leopard features inside of Tiger. :D (Version 2.4)

TUPRING I couldn't agree more! I have Tiger and Leopard on two different Drives and now I can no longer use Tiger. All I did was open up the new version and clicked on Network. I noticed that the setting "Optimize for Broadband" has been removed. I quit Mac Pilot and opened the previous version, 2.3.7 to adjust it. Big mistake! The internet immediately stopped working and I can't start up in Tiger anymore. In verbose mode it just hangs at "Socket not connected." Phuck this 5hit! (Version 2.4)

KOINGO SOFTWARE You can now remove Mac Pilot's modifications WITHOUT having to buy the program once the trial has expired. Also, the reason the application is so large is because there's over 1,000 unique controls in the application, and thousands of lines of code, in addition, it is a universal binary. This, in effect, doubles the application size. Feel free to run XSlimmer on it if you want to cut the size in half. (Version 2.2.5)

KOINGO SOFTWARE You're more than welcome to thoroughly test the software. 22 MB would be 11 MB, except it is a universal binary so contains both PPC and Intel code. (Version 2.3.2)

TOMIS Well the program wouldn't work unless I paid and registered. I suppose I must have tried out a previous version at some point, so now it thinks my "trial period" is expired. So in order to test it I had to circumvent the registration system. Strike one. Considering the market for these system configuration apps is pretty saturated, the only way to really stand out is to have a better interface or more features. The interface is a bit cramped due to the wealth of features it supports, but it's generally quite clear. They definitely get points for having more features than their competitors. However, there are several competitors to this program which are Free, and the program is a whopping 22MB! The developer would of done better to make the program in xCode or AppleScript Studio instead of REALbasic. In summary: questionably huge file size, annoying and buggy registration system, competing apps are free and mostly on-par with features. (Version 2.2.4)

DREAMKATCHA I tried this app for one reason alone: to enable the cut and paste options within Finder's context menu. I was able to cut a selection of files, but when I switched to another folder to paste them found that no such option appears in the context menu. The only way to make the files re-appear in their original location seems to be to select undo from Finder's edit menu. The files are instantly removed (or at least become invisible) when cut so I suspect if you didn't reverse the operation before powering down you'd lose them for good. Not exactly ideal. I'll stick with the free and reliable Onyx, thanks. (Version 2.2.3)

ISHAN I wouldn't call Onyx reliable. I've had it do serious damage (i.e., an unbootable system) after what would should have been a simple font/user cache cleaning. MacPilot is feature rich, and I like the many options. The most sophisticated IMHO is TinkerTool System, but you get what you pay for, in terms of GUI. The simplest, and one which I always have installed is AppleJack, which works only in single user mode and avoids a lot of the problems that all of the other system maintenance utilities can cause in an actively running system. (Version 2.2.5)
| Mar 19 2007 |
MACUPDATE ADMIN I would call OnyX reliable, as I've used it since its inception and never had any issues with it. Of course, anyone's mileage may vary. I've also never, but never, been bitten by any Apple updates whether they be OS updates or application updates, since OS X 10.1. So there's a case where many people's mileage has certainly varied. I also should state that while there are a couple of versions of OnyX available now that are newer than the one I use, including a recently released beta, I've stayed with OnyX 1.7.5 after trying the newer versions, except the betas. Not that I am afraid of betas. Generally speaking I install them and use them all the time. I just like OnyX 1.7.5 better, the UI. My current hardware: 15" MBP 2.33 GHz running OS X 10.4.9. RADDLE If someone wants to charge for software, they're not being 'greedy', it's simply a decision to ask payment for work they've done. Similarly, if a programmer wants to create another example of a known application, that's also their choice - and it's a good thing some do, otherwise there'd only be one word processor, one web browser, one system utility... in the entire world. Snide comments don't help anyone. What visitors to this site want to know is (a) is it useful or (b) did it crash your system to hell. They can make a decision on payment by themselves. Bottom line - review the software, not the concept of monies being solicited for goods or services, which is very well established and outside your control. And no, I have nothing whatsoever to do with this developer, and don't even use their software - though its very decent, as are Onyx and Cocktail. I use TinkerTool System, for which I paid. Silly me! BRUCE_Y There are some maintenance and settings utilities which are free (TinkerTool, Onyx, others), and some which charge a small shareware fee (TinkerTool System, Cocktail, Panther/Tiger Cache Cleaner, MacPilot, others). Many have some overlap of features, but no one tool does every single thing (that I have found), so I use a combination of several ( and I have registered several). WHITE FIRE Someone is being greedy by charging for this Application. Also, it does not _need_ to ask for the Administration password straight away. There are a lot of configurations here that do not need Administration access, as they only effect one's own user. Once inside the application, one is not certain what is system-wide or simply in one's user. Sure, one could probably guess, but the point is one can never be certain. Otherwise, a nice selection of configurable items, especially the exposé trick. (Version 1.1.1)
