RRNOWELL  Just a comment for now... I bought this with the MacBundle back in June... now they have a 6.1 for a price... OK, but when you are asked if you want to upgrade it doesn't mention anything about a price... not the end of the world except AFTER you have run the upgrade and replaced your original version and they have tossed it in the trash they ask for a license... now if I don't want the upgrade since it costs I have to go get my original out of the trash... come on... just tell us the upgrade is not free BEFORE we accept it so we can skip it and avoid digging our app out of the trash. IF i were rating this I would ding it severely for this.

FORMICA  I love DVDRemaster Pro and use it probably once a week. I've used it for just about everything it can do, and that's a lot -- especially for just one app. But every time I've sat down to try out one of its capabilities for the first time, I struggled to figure it out and ended up experimenting with it over and over again, each experiment costing me hours of time and usually at least one DVD too -- all because DVDRemaster Pro HAS NO HELP FILES! Of course, first I had a look at the tutorial on the Metakine website, but every one of them is designed to introduce novices to its BASIC functions, so they don't include much detail and don't even begin to cover the higher-end functions and preferences. So, the tutorials are generally useless to me. And the FAQs are equally useless, since they only cover issues related to purchasing the app.

How come a professional, $50 application like DVDRemaster Pro has NO HELP FILES? What do they mean when they call it "Pro"? Do professional-level programs generally leave out the Help files because their users already know everything there is to know about it? Or is it actually just the opposite -- Pro-level apps tend to have the most comprehensive Help files because their many capabilities make them more complex, necessitating clear, well organized, thorough instructions so users can take advantage of those capabilities? So why doesn't DVDRemaster Pro have them? I don't think it's because they haven't had time to write them in the 54 versions Metakine has released since the first one in March 2003!

To me, THIS APP IS OVERPRICED AT $50 WITHOUT HELP FILES! Please, please, PLEASE start writing comprehensive Help files for one of your upcoming versions. Introducing them all-at-once would be GREAT, but taking 2 or 3 versions to fully add them is probably more practical. If not that, then at least add extensive TOOLTIPS (a la Handbrake)! For me, that would make it easier to swallow the $50 price tag, and it would definitely make it worth 5 stars.

ROBK  I searched on the DVDReamster Pro website to learn about their software license.

Is it a per computer license or per user license?

DVD2OneX provides a PER user license. This means you can install DVD2OneX on any computer you own -- Windows or PC.

Is the DVDRemater Pro license as liberal??

LOUPIDABOU  Whatever.

64 bits didn't give me anything, you can run 64 bits apps in 10.5, and the new quicktime player has less features than the old one, but this isn't about SL (it was about the upgrade policy).

I suggest any potential user reading this to try the demo which is free at all times and decide for themselves.

PLOTH  This software does work, MOSTLY. There are a few DVDs that won't work on it. When contacted support just says "it will take quite some time to fix"

For the dvds it does do, the quality is VERY low compared to the file size.

Then to top things off - They only issue free upgrades to software for TWO MONTHS!! The new version 6 is 10 seconds faster (for a 6min rip) and they want $10 to upgrade unless you bought #5 less than 2 months ago. Because of this I may try DVD2One again but I have used Handbrake for 90% of my 400+ library & it is the best I have tried so far.

I regret buying this software.

Handbrake does ALL the dvds I throw at it - (including the ones DVDremaster can't). Handbrake is faster. Handbrake is MUCH higher quality for the same size file. Handbrake is FREE!

Save your money use Handbrake.

ABRASIF  Just wanted to clarify a lot of incorrect facts in this post.

1- You understood or update policy incorrectly. Updates within a major version (e.g. 5.0 to 5.1) are always free. However, when we release a new major version (e.g. 5.3 to 6.0) there is a slight update cost. Since a new major version comes out more or less every year you get free updates for a year. On top of that, we have a grace period were customers who purchased the previous major version in the two months prior to the release of the new major version are entitled to a free update to the new major version. Moreover, we have really low priced update available so our customers can move to the latest version if they wish. This is a lot more than most company offers.

2- DVDRemaster has various quality presets. If a particular preset doesn't suits your needs you can simply select an higher quality preset.

3- We try to address the problems found by our users. Due to DVD accessibility it sometimes take more time than others.

I hope this clarify things.

PLOTH  To charge for an upgrade within 3 months of buying a product is crazy IMO and has led me to going back to looking at DVD2Onex etc etc.

I know there are presets but to get better quality from DVD Remaster the time taken to process is FAR too long compared with Handbrake AND the file size is nearly DOUBLE for the same quality.

I have played around a lot trying to get acceptable results on a huge range of dvds.

Dec 13 2009

ABRASIF  Again, we don't force you to update. If you want to stay with the version you purchased you are free to do so. For example, if you purchased Mac OS 10.5 3 months before 10.6 came out you are free to stay with 10.5 or you may purchase the update to 10.6. It's exactly the same thing with DVDRemaster.

Dec 13 2009

PLOTH  I hardly call this version 6 a 'major update' - the speed difference is minimal as are the other features. Other software companies offer free upgrade REGARDLESS if it is a version change within 6 months. This keeps customers happy and loyal and avoids charging TWICE for virtually the same thing within a year.

Dec 13 2009

LOUPIDABOU  Snow Leopard was released August 28. It was a free upgrade only for purchases since June 8. A bit more than 2 months.

Everybody seems happy with that.

Also, I'm more than satisifed by the new features. Support for turbo & especially multi-audio was important to me. Totally worth 9.95$...

And for the speed, of course 10 seconds out of a 4 minutes encode does not sound important, but that's a really bad test. Saving 10-15 minutes on a 70-80 minutes encode is nice.

You sound like you have an agenda. If you think the upgrade is not worth 9.95 because you do not like the new features, well just don't buy it and keep using what you paid for. If you want new features that you didn't pay for originally, paying a small amount for them seems reasonable to me.

Dec 13 2009

PLOTH  Sorry you're right it was 10 second on a 17 minute convert. if it saves you 10 minutes per 80 min rip I guess that is something.

SL was WELL worth the upgrade path - it is a major change with 64bit & a few features that have really saved me time & money.

DVDRemaster on the other hand has very few features - and it doesn't work properly either. For a number of my dvds it doesn't work - but Aimersoft, DVD2One and the free Handbrake work fine on them. - My 'agenda' is to let others know my experience...that DVDRemaster IMO is not worth the money.

PLOTH  @FOULGER - Excuse me? If you read you'll see I rated the product because it DIDN'T work for a number of DVD's = wasting my time & money.

Then the slap in the face of the dev's upgrade policy was enough to push me further to write this review.

Maybe this review will help others avoid wasting time & money as I have. I'm having a great time remastering just not with this software that doesn't work. For some it may work & they will state that in their reviews.

So chill out - maybe next time others will avoid writing reviews & it'll be you who buys software that doesn't work.

FHF  I updated to 6.0 pro from V5; only USD $9.95, not that big a deal. A new feature is 'no compression', handy when you want to grab the movie only but don't need to compress (and possibly degrade) the movie.

Used DVDRemaster 6.0 to compress a 6.8 Gb movie to fit on a single-layer DVD disc; using 'Fast Transcode', 'movie only', it took about twelve minutes on my four-year-old PowerBook G4. I'd say that's pretty fast.

FIZIK  A follow-up to my review: I may not have been sufficiently clear, but DVDRemaster saves the DVD to a folder on the HD; I use Toast solely to write an image file from the folder but it may be not necessary as DVD Remaster itself (and Disk Utility for sure) may be able to handle this on its own,

FIZIK  The interface is a bit clunky. To make a backup of a licensed DVD, one must launch FairMount first and wait till it mounts the DVDs and then proceed to launch DVDRemaster and select the images mounted by FairMount as sources. After that, just wait and voila. Works about as fast as MacTheRipper and I haven't had a DVD encryption yet it was unable to handle. I am very happy with the program and am surprised about some of the negative reviews and their claim of failure. I give it a full 4.5 stars, P.S. After I remaster, I usually save to HD with Toast for the event when the purchased DVD may become unreadable and I'd need a new DVD; that may not be necessary as DVDRemaster has an ability to burn, so it might be able to save an image as well -- I did not try as I am used to Toast.

MISHA  A direct copy should not take 7 hours. I'd contact the dev for some help if you're sure you're just setting it to do a direct copy. It might be re-compressing the DVD as well (from the sound of the time it's taking you).

Generally speaking main bottlenecks of copying a DVD to your drive is the speed of the DVD drive itself. RipIt, MacTheRipper, DVDRemaster Pro should all perform the raw copy at about the same speed.

SNOWWHITESICKETTE  I've never needed seven hours to remaster with this software, but I guess the size of the movie might require so much time. I've used this to remaster several movies, and it took anywhere from 45 minutes to 2.5 hours, using a G4 iMac (1 GH, 1 GB, 80 GB), which qualifies as "underpowered." (I wish Apple would update the firmware to hold more RAM!) The movies were from 4.5 - 9.6 GB in size, and I shrank all of them- full remastering. Using 10.5.8, all current updates. Couple of suggestions- have you run Disk Utility lately, to check the disk directory and to repair permissions? Is your hard drive relatively full? If the drive is okay and has at least twice the space of the file needing remastering, seven hours does seem long to me...

ABRASIF  Hi Tom,

When you select a VIDEO_TS folder DVDRemaster is trying to query discident.com which is a nice library for performing CDDB like identification of DVDs in order to get information about the movie (i.e title, genre, actors, etc.). DVDRemaster add this information in the files it creates so you can easily locate and classify movies in your library using titles, genres and many others.

There is currently no way to turn it off but we will add a preference in the next release.

Thank you.

STEVE WISOTSKY  I've had DVD Remaster since the promo in 2008. After getting the new version of DVD Remaster Pro in the latest promo, I emailed Metakine about gifting my original copy (version 4.x). RALPHBLN  Support is amazing. DVDRemaster had a problem detecting the correct aspect ratio of some of my DVDs. I emailed the metakine guys and got immediate reply. They did everything to track down the problem and sent me a patched version.

Now I'm a happy camper. I use DVDRemaster to shrink movies and TV shows to watch them on the iPhone.

Speed-wise DVDRemaster outperforms Handbrake which I used before (DVDRemaster is roughly twice as fast). DVDRemaster has a much more logical UI than Handbrake. In Handbrake, you have to select every single track of a DVD using a drop down box and set parameters for each of them. Annoying especially for TV shows where every episode is a track. In DVDRemaster, you have everything on one screen and just check or uncheck checkboxes. DVDRemaster also sports a small preview pane of the currently selected track, the lack of which I find most annoying in Handbrake, since I never know which track contains what.

Apart from converting DVD content to a multitude of formats for Mac, iPod/iPhone and whatnot, it can create shrinked images of your DVDs (with all the menus included, but smaller in size) and extract selected features like video or audio only.

DVDRemaster is accompanied by an app named FairMount (also made by Metakine) which lets you access copy protected DVDs.

Considering speed, feature richness, user friendlyness and the excellent support, I can only recommend this app.

NATE456789  I just purchased the package deal and was pretty excited about trying DVDRemaster Pro 5.1.3.

I have been using Handbrake 0.9.3 for about 8 months and have been pretty happy with it. Plus it is free. I have converted about 700 movies for my apple Tv with very few problems.

I have two surround sound setups. Bose and just a Newer Sony Bravia system. Both take digital inputs for audio. This is essential for true surround and movie theater sound.

I was disappointed to see (Or not Hear) the true Dolby 5.1 signal was not passed thru in the Apple TV file like HandBrake does.

I can not find any other settings allowing me to do AC3 Pass thru. Am I missing something here? If anyone knows I would really like to give this software a fair shake.

I am just glad I bought it in the bundle. I have already figured out there are a few duds in the bundle. I was really hoping this wasn't one of them.

How can you have a real home theater with out true 5.1 surround sound?

Another plus with Handbrake is after the conversion it will open metaX and add the encoded movie to the que for tagging.

This application has some strong competition (That's free even!)

There are a few British and a few Japanese DVDs that I'd like to view. Since it's only a few (and I've already got enough DVD players), I'd prefer avoiding the purchase of a region free player.

RICHARDBRONOSKY  Be careful about setting your region code to none. I use MyDVDEdit to edit the menus/flow/IFOs of DVDs that I backup for my 2 year old. I edit them so that they go straight to the movie without having to press any buttons. (This is GREAT for in-vehicle DVD systems!!!) I've noticed a lot of DVDs have commands in them like: if regionCode=0 or regionCode=255 {goto blank_1_frame_infinitely_repeating_video_clip}

I of course delete those lines out, because I can on a disk I burn. If you remove the region code from your DVD player you would find that the original disk just displayed a blank screen.

i have to say, i havent really found a use for it. it just happened to be in the MU promo bundle but lots of other apps do the job better and sometimes quicker.

RALPHBLN  You have to install VLC player because FairMount depends on stuff that comes with it.

After doing so, just launch FairMount before or after inserting your copy protected DVD into the drive. Mac OS will then mount the disk as if it weren't copy protected.

MADRUSSIAN  So this might be a rather ignorant question but I am pretty new to this so please bear with me :-)

I am reading some of the comments and the bundle description and am unsure about the purpose of using tools like RipIt and DVDRemaster (or MTR and Handbrake) together? My (limited) understanding is that they are both DVD ripping tools but used for different purposes?

MISHA  + MTR and RipIt get the DVD off the disc and onto your Mac.

+ DVDRemaster Pro and Handbrake re-encode the DVD to the kind of media you want.

+ MTR and RipIt are NOT necessary in the process. DVDRemasterPro and Handbrake can work directly with the DVD.

However, getting the DVD off the disc and onto your Mac will improve the encoding speeds, since the drive can become the bottleneck (+ wear & tear).

+ The exception is if you are looking only to do full uncompressed backups of discs to your Mac's hard driven -- then you must use MTR or RipIt and Handbrake and DVDRemaster Pro are unnecessary.

I wanted to use DVDRemaster to then create my backup DVD, but when I try to find my hard drive version under DVDRemaster's "Source" , it does not show up. What am I doing wrong? What is the best way to create a backup copy?

PEDRO FARDILHA  I already rated DVDRemaster before, so I'm just going to give my impression of the new 5.x version.

I'm a long time user of both DVDRemaster and Handbrake and before this 5.x version I found myself using more Handbrake for 2 main reasons:

Handbrake has a nice queue option and their compression of dark scenes, when using 2-pass encoding, was slightly better than the one of DVDRemaster 4.x (although at the expense of more 30 ~ 45 minutes per compression).

DVDremaster makers (Metakine) has a long track of listening to their costumers and the evolution of this app is the proof of that.

Not only they implemented a queue on version 5, but also their re-compression engine is even better now and it shows, specially on dark scenes.

As an added bonus I like the fact that chapter markers are directly embedded on the new file.

So now I'm back to DVDRemaster.

I prefer the interface, the re-compression is faster than the one of Handbrake and it has all the features that I need.

Overall I'm quite pleased with it and I think that Metakine deserves to be properly praised for the good work done here and for being a company with such a good relation with their user.

If you check DVDRemaster's help documentation, "Developers" is misspelled as "Developpers". That's what Revco was pointing out.

As far as I can tell, the misspelling has been there since this app's first iteration. However, I suppose we can excuse it because English does not appear to be the first language of the folks at Metakine (I think they're from France?).

MACTOE  It REALLY angers me that developers are still doing utterly STUPID things... such as crippling demo software... as in DVDRemaster. This demo lets you copy a DVD but deliberately distorts the video every few minutes. That's pretty much like letting you test drive a new car but it will run out of gas a mile from the lot (so you can't steal it or misuse it?)... but it proves the car works! How very clever.

It is highly unlikely anyone would want this software to copy ONE or even a few DVD's. They'll probably want it to archive their entire collection... so, why not allow the demo to fully function for either a prescribed number of successful copies or a time period.

Crippling demo software and/or putting countdown timers on splash screens, or requiring a demo license via email, is... in my opinion, grounds to dismiss it.

I've been developing software for over 20 years... demos should be immediately accessible and fully functional so a user can try it and gain confidence it is a reliable product.

Notice I did not rate this software as it may be a very good product and I do not want to damage it's rating. However, I will not entertain purchasing it until a reliable and fully functional demo is available... and you shouldn't either.

FARDILHA  Hi.

I'm a long time DVDRemaster user and wanted to let my impressions about the software and the support that Metakine gives.

As as European whose main language is not English I really need a good app to convert movies to use on my iPod that allows me to add subtitles.

I know there are other options there, either for DVD 9 -> DVD 4 as also to iPod (from freeware like Handbrake to shareware like Popcorn or DVD2One).

But I believe that for an app to be complete and good in what it does it doesn't have to need a cumbersome GUI.

And so far the only one that does almost all that I need and has a nice and usable GUI is DVDRemaster.

(Handbrake GUI is a lote more confusing and Popcorn with all Roxio's pow€r is incapable of properly add a subtitle option).

If from times to times I found a problem with it? sure, what app doesn't have them?

The diference is that Metakine's costumer support is really good and they always listem to what I (a costumer) have to say, even if it's just a small detail.

Overall I could not be happier with it, that why I bought version 3.x and gladly paid for the 4.x update once it came out .

(I'm not in any way related with Metakine or DVDRemaster, except as a costumer. But If I'm the 1st one to complain with apps or companies that fail to deliver why they promise, I think that I should also praise the ones that do a god job)

RUBAIYAT  I bought DVDremaster based on the recommendations here. Previously I used Handbrake & MacTheRipper.

I was trying to play out-of-region DVDs and have been totally unsuccessful. FairMount chews at the DVD forever. I cancelled after 12 hrs and only 1.1 Gb all of which reported as bad sectors.

I then tried it on a regular DVD to test if that worked. Again no success.

The UI isn't even a match for Handbrake, which itself wouldn't win any awards.

I emailed the developer but got an automated response that he is unavailable till some time in March.

I am totally puzzled as to what I have got for my money.

ANTON.G  Just a quick comment about DvdRemaster. Being a relative newcomer to computing generally, I can't say much about technicalities that would impress your average users. I can however talk about applications that simply work, and with a minimum of fuss. These are the ones I get on with the best! I had Remaster 3, and it worked very well in conjunction with MacTheRipper. An occasional glip, which may well have been down to me, and which later was resolved. I have yet to try Remaster 4 in earnest, having only just received it, but past experience suggests that it is, like it's predecessor, quality software. Happy to recommend it.

This program ONLY supports 640x480 in normal MP4 format, NOT H.264!!!!

Movie cannot play at all when DVD was "Full remaster". Movie played for just over a min before it 'hanged' then the player automatically switched off, when the 'Movie Only' option was chosen. I decrypted the movie using MacTheRipper onto Hard disk, before using DVDRemaster to compress then burn onto DVD. All remastered movies played fine using Mac DVD Player or VLC on Mac. Suspected root of the problem could be due to incompatibility of the said Sony DVD Player (12bit/108 MHz VIDEO DAC / DVD+RW/+R/-RW/-R Playback)?

BRANDON  this app is simply the best dvd compression app available. ive used popcorn, dvd2oneX and fast dvd copy, and dvd remaster is by far the best. you have an option to use the original compression method used by the movie studio, just increase the compression, so you hvae no image loss. also you can opt to completely re-compress the whole dvd from scratch.

the best feature of this app is that you can choose which video/audio tracks you can take out. you can take out all the previews, fbi warnings and anything else you dont want, which saves more room for the final compression of the video stream which results in better quality.

highly recommend this app.

On the Windows side I usually do 9-pass encodes with DVD Rebuilder and the CCE mpeg encoder. Would be sweet if this program could be able to do somethign similar soon. Most of the other options on Mac just seem to be transcoders.

KHEPA  works ok for a while, then adds dvd icon every 3 minutes or so in the middle of the frame. maybe a hint to buy it. it also removes subtitles from films , usually ones added to the video(after the fact) not ones that were on the original film. so about 1/4 of the foreign films i've used the program on have no subtitles, while the rest do.

other than these two, it works very well, and very easily...

ANONYMOUS  Works great! For what it does I can't say ANYTHING negative. It would be nice if they added a 'copy from DVD Disk' option but I use DVDBackup for that and in a technical sense copiying doesn't really have anything to do with re-compressing.

ANONYMOUS  Works perfectly here. Note that burning hasn't anything to do with the files being burnt. Your burner must have a problem, or your toast installation is wrong.

ANONYMOUS  I really like this Mac only application, but the outcome on very long movies or DVDs with lot of extra stuff produces rather blocky main movie. Wish DVDRemaster would offer a movie-only option.

Thanks

KöNFûT  I really don't get why so many people are complainign??? it works fine for me (been using it since 1.1.1)... I like that I can choose between fast encoding or good quality... Requantiser wasn't so great in 1.1.1 but now it gives very good results... most of the tiem, I can't tell the difference between the original and the compressed DVD... I just wish importing and burning the disc didn't take so long

HUGONUI  I tried the Demo and compression is very poor compared to DVD2oneX. Besides, M2VDownsizer doesn't seem to work in Demo mode; i cannot do anything else while the app. works. Very disappointed. Perhaps, it is a problem about compatibility: PMG4 Gigadesigns cpu upgrade 1,5Ghz with 1,7 Go Memory, Panther 10.3.2.

I was told by the site "MACETVIDEO" which is a serious one that it was a good product ?!

ANONYMOUS  I purchased DVD2ONE and have been using it for over 4 months now with excellent results, almost perfect. I tried the demo tonight of DVDRemaster and could immediately see the quality was not even close to DVD2ONE. Do I have any idea why? No. I am just offering the truth here based on my own observations. However, I advise everyone to compare the two products for yourself to see the difference.

PENGUINER  Two apps does the same thing : DVDRemaster and DVD2oneX.

I was looking for the best video quality.

I compared DVDRemaster to DVD2oneX.

Here's what I found.

If you use the "Requantizer" option in DVDRemaster, you'll get the job done quicker than in DV2oneX. But that high speed is at the cost of quality.

I thought maybe the "Downsizer" option would help. But that one isn't very stable. In "Normal" quality, re-encoding takes about 4 hours on a Dual 1,25 Ghz PowerMac. And the result is weird. It runs smoothly and with good results on a computer, but seems to be unreadable in a home player; which makes it useless !

I've wrote to the authors about this, but never got a reply. I really feel like I've lost 40 dollars…

CHRIS  DVDRemaster has some problem with compressing the dvd files..It runs smoothly but the quality is no where near that of DVD2oneX. Compressing with DVDremaster will result in frequent blocky video frames. DVD2oneX offers the best DVD duplication...If you like bootleg quality get DVDRemaster...If you want professional quality dvds..DVD2oneX is the answer

ANONYMOUS  DVDRemaster is the first competitor to step into the ring against DVD2OneX (the first in the Mac market). DVDRemaster does basically the same thing and, contrary to their webpage, does it at the same speed when using EQUIVALENT settings. Also, DVDRemaster only does full disc copy while DVD2OneX offers both full disc as well as movie-only mode which is a nice option for users. The result: while DVDRemaster is a welcome addition to the Mac DVD market, DVD2OneX still rules.
