STAR_ANTARES  I have been using Desktop Manager (for PPC-- 0.5.3) successfully (I LOVE IT!) with Tiger for many months. However, I recently updated the Mac Software (to Java release 8, Security-update-2009-001, Safari 3.2.1, and Quicktime 7.6) and suddenly I am having the same problems that others have reported: pager and window name only showing in Desktop where DM was launched and not being able to move applications to other windows. It seems like the bugs in DM 0.5.4 have been mimicked by these "upgrades". Any ideas? Might this help debug these problems?

AKROBAT  I've a Macbook and an eMac. I use Spaces on my Macbook and was looking for a similar app for my eMac.

All I need is the option to allocate the main menu to the middle mouse button (like Spaces).

Click the middle button, choose a desktop and that's it!

Same problem here as in VirtueDesktops.

Doesn't exist in this app either.

CURRANB79  I used Desktop Manager on OS 10.4 (for PPC) and LOVED it. When I upgraded to Leopard I was very disappointed with "Spaces" (it was hard to stay on the desktop you wanted to be on--apps kept trying to return to the desktop they'd been opened on, if you toggled between apps on your desktop you were suddenly back on another desktop, etc.) so I disabled it and installed Desktop Manager--but found that it had adopted the same functions as Spaces. I believe I was using 0.5.3 (I'm stuck on a PPC) so I don't know if 0.5.4r1 has overcome whatever it is that makes Spaces so unhelpful.

WOLFBX  0.5.4r1 works fine with Leopard and Spaces enabled - the only issue still to be fixed is that the"Desktop Pager" only shows up on one of the Desktops.

Anyone knows on how to contact Carlos A. Leguizamoun or how to get the sources code for 0.5.4r1 (Intel version)?

One small bug when running on intel mac with two screens. The pager only shows up on the workspace that I launch DM from.

Interestingly the PPC version works just fine on intel mac. -However the above bug affects both PPC and intel version (when running on intel only)

RANDREWS  The only issue that I have with this release is that there was no PPC build supplied. The PPC systems are not going to be going away any time soon so shouldn't updates be ported to both platforms until the PPCs are no longer mainstream? I'd like to see the PPC have the same benefits as the intel platform until the PPC is no longer a viable platform to use. Seems like this is starting to become a trend with other development as well and people are not considering that a number of the G4 and G5 systems purchased in the last year are no where near end of life by any means.

Boo for intel platform getting all the attention.

MYJL  I'm a Desktop Manager user since ... years. Great piece of software !

I've a new Mac Intel since March, and unfortunately Desktop Manager (0.5.3) is less stable than on my old Powerbook.

The most ennoying bug is that the "Desktop Pager" is displayed on the virtual window on which Desktop Manager has been launched only.

And this bug stills exist in the version 0.5.4r1.

Please, could you fix this in the next release ?

Thanks a lot !

CONKMASTA-FLEX  Simple and easy to use.. I highly recommend this app, it's brilliant.

However, I would like it to take advantage of the motion-sensor/light-sensor technology like VirtueDesktop does (a similar app that crashes far too often on my 2.16 GHz Intel). It would also be great to have the ability to "drag-n-drop" windows into other desktops.

SISYPHUS  i really like desktop manager, preferring it to virtue or other similar apps. however, the same issue comes up in this new intel version as in the past PPC version (written to system.log)

/Applications/Desktop Manager.app/Contents/MacOS/Desktop Manager: The function CGSCreateDictionary is obsolete and will be removed in a Tiger update. Unfortunately, this app, or a library it uses, is using this obsolete function, and is thereby contributing to an overall degradation of system performance.

i wrote to the developer about this in the PPC version and they said they would address it, but, it's still there. If they fix this, i'll dump virtue and use it.

PLUB  I just downloaded Desktop manager and like it, even more than Spaces in Mac OS 10.5

I've found a few bugs:

1) "The Show Pager on Desktop" preference only works in one desktop at a time.

2) The same is true with the "Name Display" preference - it is only working in one window at a time.

3) I can't get the "Move Window to Next Desktop" command to work.

Please let me know if you have any revisions on the way and where I can get it.

Thanks for updating this great utility.

JUSTINNORMAN  After a couple of years, Desktop Manager continues to be on my (very short) list of OS X startup programs. Even though it hasn't been updated in a long time, it still tops VirtueDesktops (in my opinion) by including the ability to put the desktop pager in the menubar, which is the only place I ever use it. Simple, stable, and potentially very useful for those who work in multiple applications simultaneously and like to have their work organized.

desktop manager has only one problem, it doesn't foreground the window of the active application (if you choose it with (apple-tab) )

As my first work on any new system i get is to look for a pager, I tried about 6, and it is the best.

RANMATURUSSA  Let me tell you a story.

In 1998 my college roommate showed me a nifty thing his Linux computer could do--if he moved the cursor to the left or right, a new desktop showed up. He had FOUR desktops in total!

This blew my freakin' mind. I couldn't help but think of all that extra screen real estate that could be used for multitasking. Oh how I very much wanted a similar system for my very own.

This was in the dark days when I was using other peoples' PCs because I was too poor to have a Mac. I tried programs that affected this ability for Windows, and they all were buggy, crashed, and were generally inefficient. Today I found this program for OS X, and I want to cry for joy. Finally an efficient program that switches desktops that works.

I cannot thank the developer enough. This is exactly what I have wanted for seven years.

Use of this function may cause an overall degradation in the performance of this application, or of the system as a whole.] [Level 3] [UID -2] [GID -2] [Host ...]

ANONYMOUS  Awesome program!

I wouldn't manage without it. Now I'm not that desperate about getting an iMac due to my iBooks small screen.

I do however miss the ability to view all desktops at once, in a somewhat "reveal all" way in Exposé.

I also miss the ability to flag on/off whether it should be launched at login or not. Other programs have this function, without having to add it through Accounts manually.

But those are minor cosmetics.

GREGORY BREDBECK  One amusing problem arose as I fell in love with this stunning little beauty: the message that pops up to tell you the widget is done should say "disply widget?" or "open widget?" Now it says, "is widget open?", and I kept clicking "no," which was the correct answer. Considering I am an English professor it took an embarassingly long time for me to clue into what the problem was.

It was a great reminder to me of how dastardly English is for all but the minority of us who were born into it, even for a mind-nature as obvioously brilliant as the one behind this gem. This could be the only widget you'll ever need (or want). The angle rotation is a surpsingly useful feature and really above the call of duty to have developed.

KLONDIKE KID - ALASKA  TOO GOOD to be true! Pinch me, I must be dreaming. I'm running dual 19" flatscreens on my G5 and even then never seem to have enough desktop space when running up to ten applications and utilities at once. Even with Expose's help my desktop clutter is a nightmare when working multiple projects across several different programs.

This app has to be the greatest single improvement to OS X utility capabilities since Expose was added. Rich, your program is truly awesome from my perspective and needs. Apple needs to reward you handsomely and incorporate your app into Tiger for sure. After 15 minutes of investigating and trying the multitude of features, I went straight to the Donation link and sent you my thanks. This really is unbelievable. And to think I was nearing the point of buying a second graphics card and adding two additional monitors. You just saved me $800+!

Anyone using laptops will appreciate this app as the best organizer of your screen contents you will encounter. My 14" iBook is now in heaven! Keep up the great work.

ANONYMOUS  I've used Desktop Manager for months and months and I love it. It's everything I've wanted in a virtual desktop. This is the quintessential OS X application: stable, polished, feature-rich (but not bloated), and just beautiful. They ought to package it with OS X, it's that good. And hey, it's free, and installation (and uninstallation/upgrade) is painless. Give it a try, you'll be happy you did.

RUSSELL  Desktop Manager does have ONE major flaw. If you set the SWITCH TRANSITION feature to CUBE and you set your monitor DISPLAY RESOLUTION "at or above 1600 X 1200" the cute little CUBE transition feature fails. How disappointing! It has to be set at 1600 X 1024 or BELOW in order for it to work.

The CUBE transition works flawlessly on the powermac, but fails on the mac mini with the HD display set at 1920x1200. It does work with the resolution set below 1600x1200.

DAVTRI  Totally sweet. I hadn't used a Virtual Desktop on any of my Macs in a while, but use them all the time on other *nix based systems and really missed them on my Power Book. I tried CodeTek's newest offering and found it clunky, to say the least. I often had odd crashes when it was running as well, which is not cool. I stumbled across this application when reading some developer postings on cocoadev and decided to give it a try. I am please to say that it's working flawlessly on my 17" Power Book. No crashes, good options (like autohiding the pager) and the transitions rock! (I am using the cube transition right now). I would highly reccomend this app to anyone.

KPS  FIY:

I figured out the problem with the windows changin and effects going away.

It happends when I'm using dual monitors and the app restarts. If I have my laptop up and the app has been started in single monitor, then when I hookup to my other one it just kills the effects, but if the app gets restarted(like on a reboot) and the second monitor is hooked up, the app gets all screwy looking.

Mostly the pager gets tweaked and becomes these little windows and all the switchin effects(and who knows what else) stops functioning.

I wrote the author and never heard back, so I'm posting this to warn anyone who uses it, don't expect it to work perfectly, cause it doesn't.

T  Great app. I have been looking for a workspace manager for while, and finally found something that comes close to what I'm looking for. It isn't finished yet, but it's very useable. Love the cool transitions! I use active edges and the slide effect. It feels like sliding from one desktop to the other. Great! Hope to see more things added in the future. Oh, one more thing, Desktop Manager froze my iBook G4 running Mac OS X 10.3.4 a couple of times after waking up from sleep. So I looked if some other app or driver got conflicted with the app. Finally I removed my SideTrack 0.9 trackpad replacement driver, and my iBook stopped freezing. Not sure if it's really the culprit, but I tested it one more time and again with SideTrack installed, Desktop Manager froze my iBook. So I removed SideTrack permanently and kept Desktop Manager. It was a tough choice.

SPAM SPANDWICH  quite a nice neat app but unfortunately it doesn't fit my main needs. i was looking for a virtual desktop app that would help reduce clutter when working with flash or photoshop's proliferation of palletes on those occasions when i'm forced to work in a single monitor environment: with flash switching between desktop manager screens causes flash's palletes to jump from screen to screen as well and with photoshop, using apple-option-O on any of the palletes in attempt to move it causes desktop manager to freeze. oh well. seven out of ten for being 'almost' useful.

KOAPS  Vary Kwel App...

I like the new changes... One thing I would like to see, but not sure if anyone has suggested it yet, would be if you click on a app icon in the dock, it brings the app into the current virtual desktop. This might not be easy to do since apps like terminal are nice to have spread across serveral virtual desktops, so being able to drag a window from one pager window to another(like you can with Linux virtual desktops) might be a more pratical addition to do.

All in all it's a vary good app, haven't had issues with the newer versions(5.1 is gReaT)

SAM RAE  Great little piece of software. I've been wanting something to do Linux-like multiple desktops for a while, but didn't want to pay for it. Now I have it!

Two features I'd like to see:

1. An option to have the desktop pager show just grey boxes (ala Linux) instead of the application icons. I think it looks a bit messy.

2. Another option for the desktop pager to have just names of desktops (again ala Linux) instead of previews.

I'll be certainly using it from now on. Great stuff.

JAKE  Bug:

Running 10.3.2 with all the latest updates off software update.

Was running Stickies, Mail, Safari and iChat. Launched Desktop Manager 0.5, moved to the second window and by accident launched Mail again. Well, it didn't launch, but it drew a white box where the window would've been. I quit it. Quit DM 0.5 and asked it consolidate all the windows. After that, everything was hosed, Safari's google search was missing. Pieces of windows were left on the screen. I quickly restarted, check disk, and rebooted. Nothing wrong now. Kind of a serious bug though.

1. Either need to prevent multiple launches of same program, or...

2. Figure a way for them to be launched simultaneously. (obviously ; ) )

Great start though

EJI  Altogether more responsive and more intuitive than previous versions. I haven't spotted any memory or resource problems (then again, I didn't in the last versions, either), nor have I had any glitches in functionality or system conflicts so far. My one caveat is that I believe the system must have Quartz enabled to experience these dazzing desktop switches in 0.5.0 -- my iBook G3 lacks Quartz, and all I get is the standard switch, no matter what option I've selected. All the same, I've trashed CodeTek. DM is alpha freeware and still comes out tops.

ANONYMOUS  Being a long time CodeTek user, but being unhappy having to pay $22.50 for relatively few new features that effect me, I thought I'd give Desktops Manager a try.

Whilst it's lacking in some of the more sophisticated CTVD features (desktop pager, binding applicatons to desktops, etc) it does do what it sets out to do -- and does it quite well.

The biggest plus was Expose working properly, however, the minuses were still a bit strong with this release: 30% CPU usage with 8 desktops (as opposed to 0% to 2% for CTVD with 16 desktops). Someone else noticed the memory leak and it may be that the CVS fixed version corrects this problem as well.

It would also be handy to have some sort of a floating pager concept, as I frequently need to move windows between desktops and keybindings to perform this function take too long and are a bit fiddly (plus, I want to move the window, without moving ME with the window, as is the current behaviour).

One other big bug: When I quit Desktops Manager, open windows not on the current desktop were unretrievable. Restarting allowed me to "Hide" applications, re-quit DM, then re-show applications (and their windows).

Otherwise though, this application is showing great promise and I may well forego my upgrading CTVD and stick with Desktops Manager full time.

CLIFF  OK let me try to explain myself a little better. If Safari was confined to Desktop #1 it wouldnt be a problem. The problem is that safari WONT stay confined to desktop #1. If I focus Safari on desktop #2 & hit Cmd-N I can get a new window just fine but now Safari is spread out between two virtual desktops. Potentially I can have windows from one app all spread out between four or more desktops.

Now maybe thats the way this app is supposed to work but if it is then I dont get it. If thats the case then I'm exchanging having to hunt around in the dock for having to hunt around in four desktops to find the window I want, even more difficult if the window is convered up by other windows. I dont see how that really saves time or effort. It seems like it makes more sense to force all windows for an open application to remain on the same desktop. Thats the way desktop managers I've used in the past have worked and they were great with the exception of having floating windows rather than a menu extra.

Please dont take this as a criticism. If its working correctly & other users like it then great. Its just counterproductive for me the way it is right now. Judged on all other criteria its a great app I guess. If I could make 3 recomendations:

1) Perhaps add a preference to let the user choose between allowing apps to spread between desktops or forcing all of an apps windows to remain on the same virtual Desktop.

2) Allow certain apps to be ignored by the manager or included in all desktops. In some circumstances it would be nice to have access to some apps at all times. (Safari, iTunes, maybe even the Finder, etc...)

3) Maybe make them "spring loaded" desktops so you can drag between virtual desktops, for example I click a file in desktop three in the finder and drag it to the desktop 1 icon. Desktop 1 (which maybe has my email message I'm composing) activates and I can drop the attachment into the email.

Anyway, I hope it doesnt sound like I'm being rude or anything. I really like the app (especially the transparent icons like the eject icon when desktops are changed). I just wish it were tweaked to be more like the way I work.

ANONYMOUS  What a great idea, I'm looking forward to a replacement for my current desktop switcher.

I've not tried it on Jaguar, but it has issues on Panther. I can switch between desktops and rename them, but they all stay as Desktop 1 when switching. I can only use three of the four deskops. After several switches between desktops it stops working completely.

TIM BROWN  You can move a window to another desktop, just minimize it into the dock, switch to another desktop and restore the window. :-)

SEVEN5  This app is getting really good. Its very speedy where Codetek VirtualDesktops gets laggy. I dont need all the features they have (they are my current choice for vDesktops). But this app is really fast.

I need a pager though. I love Codetek's pager, i like to be able to see what is on each desktop to switch to it even faster. I also need a way to move a window to another desktop. Give me these and call me switched!

TIM BROWN  It would be really awsome, if you could have it do a Expose like "Mini-View", where I could press a hotkey and 4 little mini screen shots of each desktop would slide on screen.

This is a great app that is based on the KISS principle of things, and it rocks! I'd even pay for it! Awsome on my 12" iBook, makes 1024x768 almost livable, and now I'm even usin it on my 1600x1200 desktop! :-D

STR3TCHDOG  Very cool app!

I agree that the other software has way too many features. This is nearly perfect!

The only function missing (in my opinion) is the ability to put an apps windows in multiple desktops. For example having palettes in Flash, Photoshop and Illustrator in different desktops from the project would be a great function for Powerbook users with limited screen space.

WAZZAMATTAU  it figures... i can't even bring myself to mention the name of that *other* site, what a disgusting and tangled mess of UN-user friendly HTML that site is...

i stopped using that site when they started using popup windows to harass you to buy their "Pro" (LOL!!!) service... that was maybe 2 years ago now... you'd think that anyone discerning enough to use a Mac would be equally discerning about what websites they use, but no, the sheep/lemmings/morons/idiots line up for the slaughter at that *other* site.

that *other* site just can NOT suck enough...
