MAREK I bought Saft some time ago (it was 'Saft for Tiger' then) and was not using it much. Now I wanted to use it on my new Snow Leopard system, so I paid for upgrade ($8). But I still can't register my demo of 'Saft for Snow Leopard', because Li Hao allows me to download 'Saft for Leopard' license only! To get newest version I HAVE TO UPGRADE AGAIN (another $8, which makes "UPGRADE" $1 more expensive than buying FULL LICENSE ($15). I asked Li Hao about that, but he just ignores my emails. Now I am trying to get refund from PayPal. I highly recommend 'Glims' and "Glimmer Blocker' duo to get full Saft replacement FOR FREE! Eat my five bucks, Li Hao! (Version 12.0.2)

GBBOB Do not download this piece of crap. If you do, you will not be able to fully delete it. It is a damn haxie that attaches a piece of itself to a part of Safari. As I wrote earlier once you delete it, it will bring up a dialog box asking you to put Saft back in the app, folder and it also then stops your home page from loading even after you click the OK button. When Safai 4.0.4 came out I thought it would solve the problem based on what I read in the Saft help. It did not. Still every time I open Safari I get that damn box and my home page does not load. This prick of a programmer gives us no way to fully uninstall Saft. Several updates have come out since my first comment and still no uninstaller. What kind of person is this that makes a utility with no off key. The only reason I can get from all this is that the programmer is using the dialog box to annoy the user to the point that they pay for the crap he is shoving up our butts. Well, sadly I am unemployed and not well and need the money for more important things. I curse this coward for not supplying a way to get rid of this trash. I urge people to boycott Saft and use the free utility Glims that basically does that the same as Saft. End of Line... (Version 12.0.2)

ROBOTANK What version of OS X are you using? Saft installs a plugin as well as the launcher application, and it sounds like this hasn't been removed. If you're on Leopard (or running Safari in 32-bit on Snow Leopard), there should be a bundle (Saft.bundle) in /Library/InputManagers. I haven't used the Saft Snow Leopard version, but as I understand it, it can either use the launcher or the Snow Leopard compatible version of SIMBL to load for 64-bit Safari. If you're using the SIMBL method, check in /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins or ~/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins for the Saft bundle. Saft is not impossible to uninstall--I know because I've uninstalled myself :) You just need to find out where the bundle is hiding. (Version 12.0.2)

GBBOB Thank you so much for the help and info. The extra parts to the program were exactly where you said it would be. I am surprise that CleanApp did not locate it when I trashed the dang thing the first. Again I say that it really stinks that the hack of a programmer does not supply a read me telling the user how to implement the program and what is placed where since there is nothing in the Help menu about it and how little the programmer cares about his user base. I just hope what comes around goes around applies to this hack. For over 20 years I reviewed Mac Utilities and had no problem getting answers whether they were commercial, shareware or freeware developers. Based on current comments, I think Saft (or more apt Shaft) rating should be reassessed. Don't support a person who does not care about his user base. End of Line... (Version 12.0.2)

KERNELG I have used and recommended Saft for years. While hesitant, I sprung for the upgrade to the Snow Leopard version when it was finally out of beta. This was a mistake. With Glims now available for free, the only reason I wanted to get Saft back on my system was ad blocking. I am tired of seeing the same damned "I got ripped in 4 weeks" and countless Internet dating ads. I also had many years of carefully selected ad blocking patterns built up. Why am I so disappointed? Saft ad blocking no longer works properly. Oh, it works if you try to load a single image directly. You'll get a Safari dialog which describes how the image could not be loaded because Saft blocked the URL based on a given pattern. But there the ad sits in the middle of a web page, displayed as normal. This occurs through refresh, re-launch, cache reset, Saft settings wipe, and even a full Safari reset. As a Saft user for years, I know how it's supposed to work and it does not. For the record, this is with the SIMBL plug-in install, running Safari in 64 bit mode. (The other methods cripple Safari, and are not an option.) Why not just report this to the developer? Because I have reported issues and asked questions in the past and I've learned that you may, or may not, get a reply weeks later, and it will rarely be more than one sentence which may, or may not, be relevant to the topic. In other words, the message is now "go away." Message received. I would no longer recommend paying for Saft. Good luck navigating his web site if you wanted to. If you don't need ad blocking, definitely go with Glims for free. (Version 12.0.1)

KERNELG Just popped up on the radar: Safari AdBlocker 1.1.1. It's free, 64-bit ready, and the new version works perfectly in Snow Leopard via SIMBL. The installer even includes SIMBL, whereas Saft didn't even provide a link to the SIMBL web site. (Version 12.0.1)

KERNELG Sorry, no. GlimmerBlocker was the first alternative that I tried. It causes Safari to stall out at random times, and created massive lag in network applications besides Safari because it's a proxy at the OS level. It is not a viable solution at all. (Version 12.0.2)

BONOBO I'd registered Saft quite some time ago, and for sure I've also upgraded every time Hao Li wanted us to upgrade which meant upgrade everytime Mac OS X was upgraded (10.3->10.4->10.5). But now I'm fed up. EVERY TIME Safari got a minor update we had to wait for a new version of Saft, where Hao Li often only had to enable Saft for this version number (as some brave people had proved by hacking Saft's prefs file or something), this making us far too dependent on Hao Li. Now I'm happily using Glims http://www.machangout.com/ which can do almost everything Saft can (and Glims is catching up FAST) plus quite a few other things. So, Hao Li, it was *relatively* nice while it lasted: Though Saft was great, your communication and update policy was, uhm, let me say "suboptimal". I'm splitting, I've found another love. Thanks and bye. (Version 12.0.0)

PSYCHOS I'm in the same boat. The developer could have kept far more of us previously-loyal Saft users simply by not trying to wring every dollar out of us. The last straw was the initial 32-bit Snow Leopard update. It provided no new functionality, and from what I know of the innards of the OS and Safari, probably took the same 5 minutes as your usual Safari version bump for the developer to do. $8 for this? Sorry, no. I'm happy with Glims now. The only thing I miss from Saft is integrated ad-blocking. I'm using currently GlimmerBlocker; I'd rather have a plugin than have a proxy server running, but this meets my needs for now. Other than that, Glims has everything that Saft added for me, and more. (I don't think I could go without having "," and "." to move back and forth through tabs now, for one.) (Version 12.0.1)

MISTERSQUID I've spent too much money upgrading SAFT to spend more time (money) articulating what's wrong with SAFT now. GBBOB I have used and reviewed many utilities over the years and saft is the worst in implementation. First there is no read me file to tell you anything about the program, how to install, and what it installs once it is implemented within Safari. When I got to the end of the trial period, I decided not to keep it since I was using Glims and it did basically the same as Saft. So I took the app and trashed it and allowed clean app to locate any related files. The next time I launched Safari, I got a dialog box saying Saft is missing and ask me to reinstall the app. What I did not understand was why am I getting such a box if i deleted it. So I went into my archive folder found my original copy of Saft and booted the app. That was when I finally found the help for it. After going through the help, I discovered that Saft is a damn HAXIE. When it launches with Safari for the first time it places hooks into some component of Safari and there is no way to remove these pieces even if you do a reinstall of Safari which I tried. So now every time I launch Safari I first have to wait for the box to come up, click on OK and then Safari will load but I have to hit the damn OK button before Safari will load completely. Even in the help notes there are no information on how to uninstall Saft because you can't fully do. So either you buy or get use to that annoying box. You do not write a utility that cannot be fully uninstalled or have a script to remove all the parts. To me this author is nothing but a schmuck and a shyster and we all should boycot Saft and use Glims. END OF LINE... (Version 12.0b5)

DEFUNCT Basically in short: Saft used to be great, and alsmot in a league of its own. No really exciting new functions have been added, the developer insists on charging us for EVERY upgrade, when all he does to get it to work with new versions of safari is edit a line in a .plist (ok, the 64bit version probably did require work and i would pay for that...but all the rest? come on!) Another bonus is the developers insistence on being entirely uncommunicative, basically, if you pay, dont expect mich in return expect emials saying "this new version is out, please pay XX dollars to upgrade" - thanks for that. So, after many years of relative happiness (all this aside, saft does what it does very well), i have ditched saft got Glims working in 64 bit Safari, its free, its great, i can talk to the developers (they actually run it like a project! communicate! inform us!) - i wont ever look back, but will thank Saft for a number of happy years. p.s there are other alternatives - SafatiStand etc - check out http://pimpmysafari.com/ (Version 12.0b5)

At the same time, though, I can't bring myself to fork over more cash for the same user-experience especially not when there is a free alternative. FRANKOF I've been a loyal SAFT user for many years now, paid three times for "updates" after upgrading the OS. I have seen this program grow for some time, and then - nothing. It has not added features ever since Leopard came out, it even lost features that were present in Tiger, such as blocking GIF animation. Every little update of Safari killed Saft; and not for a real reason. In fact it just checked the Safari version against the version stated in the saft plist, and refused to start if it was higher. No wonder Saft was "updated" so fast every time: the developer usually just changed a single string in the plist (one that everyone could have done) and voila, he appeared "responsive". He is NOT. I have contacted the developer several times, with feature suggestions and bug reports - not a single time he bothered to reply. This utterly arrogant and disturbing attitude upset me more than once. Now, after upgrading to Snow Leopard, he wants me to pay a fourth time. Let me say it very clearly: FORGET IT! No added features, not even 64bit support, none of the useful features I had suggested years back. I might have considered upgrading for some nominal upgrade fee, if it was an upgrade. It is not. It is the attempt to rip-off customers that paid for this software for years. This f*cking s*cks. This guy definitely lost me as a customer for good. I have moved on to Glims without a single look back. (btw: the Glims developers are really nice guys - I found a bug, reported it, and got a reply almost instantly. I know they care; they do without asking for money. And you know what: I'll pay them a donation twice the price of Saft as soon as it is running flawlessly) (Version 12.0b3)

I paid for the Tiger and Leopard versions, and to ask for money for a Snow Leopard version that isn't -- because it's still 32 bit -- and with no new features to justify an upgrade otherwise is unfair to users and a questionable practice. BELOVEDRA WARNING! BUYER BEWARE! I have registered this software in June 2009, and after I installed Snow Leopard on Sept 1st, the Saft license stopped working. Why? Because there is a new Snow Leopard specific UPDATE! Since when should an update be paid for, especially when I got less than 3 months' use out of the software? Most normal software vendors provide a reasonable free upgrade window! I tried contacting the developer several times, and in the space of a month I got 1 (yes, just one) reply, and even that was a curt one. The only solution I was given was to pay for a new license! It seems like this guy is shamelessly trying to make a fast buck out of his users. And it is not just me who is saying this. ROBOTANK Well, it looks like Saft has beaten Glims in publicly releasing a version that supports 64-bit Safari (though Glims has had pre-release builds, accessible through their Facebook fan page, with 64-bit support available for a couple weeks). However, I think that Saft's developer needs to add new features or otherwise provide a substantial reason to choose (and pay for) Saft over Glims. Otherwise, people will continue to drop Saft for Glims--since their functionality is very similar and Glims is free--especially when a paid Saft upgrade comes out that doesn't offer new features. I simply can't see any motivation to pay for the Snow Leopard Saft update when a Glims update is right around the corner. (Version 12.0b2)

MRGLSMRC you dont seem to be reviewing saft, which is excellent. what you are reviewing is the price of a competing app. and you haven't discussed a single feature. saft uses simbl which is a haxie. not a secret readily available info. i think you are just spamming for glims. glims never sells itself on its own merits but uses a fear close that its competitors are somehow less stable. i see this as a form of spamming which is why i responded here. in fairness to glims i have not taken the time to review it but it must have some merits with so many vocal advocates. i cannot know how well written it is or how it changes the security of my browsing or os without giving it a run through. but saft is so safe and reliable that why should i bother? you complain too much about the modest cost of saft. i like to know how the developer writing free software monetizes his product. how many poor rubes put limewire on their system and took major performance hits because of its little tricky hooks? there aint no free lunch and saft is damn cheap for what it does. but mostly i do use omniweb over safari these days so i am less on top of the issue than i should be to write about it. but all this spamming for glims pisses me off. i don't trust such vacant enthusiasm. one of the things i love about saft is the way it organizes downloads by daily folders. saft had private browsing and thumbnails before safari did. saft manages blocked ad servers extremely well. wheresoever safari goes saft leads the way. i don't give a r@ts @$$ about glims. take it back to your school! PSYCHOS While I have enjoyed Saft in the past, I must agree with those who are not willing to pay for an upgrade to support Snow Leopard. Consider that Apple is only charging $29 for Leopard users to upgrade to Snow Leopard; this is because Apple is smart enough to know that people won't pay much more since most of the features are under the hood. Similarly, upgrading Saft appears to provide NO new functionality, past being compatible with Snow Leopard (and in 32-bit mode, which is much smaller of an update than the upgrade to support Safari 4.0.) If there were more major changes to Saft, possibly even just 64-bit support, I would consider paying to upgrade. If there was a new major version of Safari that Saft had to be overhauled to support, I would consider paying to upgrade. The developer has been very good in the past about quickly updating Saft to work with Safari updates. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case, since there's no timeline provided for 64-bit Safari support. I have to echo those who note that, while the updates are quick, the licensing/download system is sometimes confounding. If the developer wishes to provide a fairly priced upgrade, say $3 - $5 ($3 being the price difference between Saft for Leopard and Saft for Snow Leopard), along with 64-bit support, I will be happy to upgrade. Until then, it seems that Glims has been adding more and more features since I last compared it to Saft, thus with them promising 64-bit support soon, I will switch if that materializes. ROBOTANK Like many others, I have a Saft licence from Leopard and won't be paying to a Snow Leopard one. I switched to Glims months ago anyway, both because I prefer it and because I was sick of Saft's ridiculous and convoluted update process. In any case, charging for a plugin that only works in 32-bit Safari is ridiculous. The current Glims build will work in 32-bit mode without the need to pay anything, and the developers say they're close to getting it working for 64-bit. I'm no expert on what's happened with InputManagers in Snow Leopard, but apps that used to rely on InputManagers, like 1Password and Speed Download, have found a way to get their plugins into 64-bit Safari, so we know it can be done. Until Saft's developer figures out the same, he has no business charing for an upgrade. (Version 12.0b)

BNEW Folks...Saft can't work under Snow Leopard the way it has in the past because Apple removed Input Managers from all 64 bit apps. It's not a question of the developer building Saft as a 64 bit plugin (in fact, Safari has no plugin API at all). It's that how Saft worked in the past as an Input Manager no longer exists for 64 bit apps. Hence the 32 bit mode requirement. (Version 12.0b)

FOTODIVR Well, I have been a S(h)aft user since day one and have aways been happy with the results. I have even waited for the updates before updating Safari but this is the last straw. To have to pay to use it in 32 bit for Snow Leopard is ludicrous. The developer should be ashamed! (and it doesn't even work properly with Safari in Snow Leopard at 32 bit)! This is the best reason to switch to GLIM - Hmmmm - free and is not a SIMBL hack - and it works. 64 bit to come quickly (check out the GLIM comments here on MU). And GLIM is more versatile. Nuf said. I will remove S(h)aft from all of our computers (and I paid for licenses for all of them!) and no longer have this POS on my watch list. (Version 12.0b)

DRDUL Wow! So many complaints that every Safari update breaks Saft. That's to be expected. The same thing happens with other apps that hack Safari, like 1Password. It's no big deal. Wait a day before installing the latest Safari update, and by then Saft (and 1Password and others) will have been updated. IMO it's an negligible inconvenience given the essential functionality that Saft adds to Safari. Every once in a while I use Safari on a Mac that doesn't have Saft installed, and it's no fun at all. Saft is an excellent app, it is rock solid, and updates are delivered within 24 hours of a new Safari version. I can't ask for anything more. (Version 11.0.1)

ROBOTANK That's because the developer inserts a string in the Saft plist file that tells it not load if Safari's build number exceeds the current one. You can edit the string and "trick" Saft into loading. On the other hand, you could switch to Glims, which, although it sometimes has incompatibilities with new versions of Safari (minor or otherwise), at least it doesn't shut itself down because of a tiny .0.1 update. I used Saft for a while, but this issue as well as the convoluted update process made it more trouble than it's worth. (Version 11.0b (5530.18))

PSYCHOS There are a few other pretty good free addons of this type (e.g., Glims), but none of them seem to do quite what Saft does as well as it does, and $12 is quite reasonable for how much time it's saved me with shortcut searches, ad/popup blocking, and some tab stuff. The developer is extremely responsive, which is always important for any sort of paid software; the new version to fix compatibility with the final version of Safari 4.0 came out within a couple hours of the Safari update. My one wishlist item would be the ability to remap menu items (e.g., I personally remap keys by editing the MainMenu.nib: Quit to Opt-Cmd-Q, Print to Opt-Cmd-P so I don't accidentally trigger one of those, and left/right tab to Cmd-[ and Cmd-]. Every few updates of Safari, the MainMenu.nib gets replaced and I have to remap these again.) (Version 11.0b (5530.17))

THERMIDOR I loved Saft when I began using it a few years ago. Loved it, used it, couldn't do without it for the few days after each Safari update. Then, somehow, it got harder to figure out how to get Saft updates. Dead links, self-referring link loops, vague terminology that left things more confusing than ever... I had to repeatedly email the developer just to find where I needed to go. Like others commenting here, I was informed my email address wasn't valid. After emailing the developer, I would receive some ultra-brief reply with a link that would would magically work one time and one time only. Eventually, no reply came, and I realized I was getting angry at just the thought of spending more attention and time trying to contact the guy. This was all so I could get ONE convenient function not provided by other programs: the "Add Bookmark Here" add-on at the bottom of each bookmark menu. How many programs are able to update without these insane runarounds? It's clearly not that hard to do. Yet this guy has created this nearly impenetrable system of hoops and challenges, completely backward and needlessly frustrating for hundreds of people. I now use Glims. I uninstalled Saft a few months ago, and just did without the Add Bookmark Here function. Now I notice the Glims team has incorporated that as well. Thank God. Now Saft is merely a magnificent negative example, showing how to totally screw up something that actually worked well. Good riddance. (Version 10.5.6)

KWSHOES SAFT is an INDISPENSABLE tool in my world, despite the difficulties that are created by its nature as an extension to Safari and the need to update it whenever Safari is updated. It's also somewhat difficult to understand and to tailor its use to your own browsing preferences. Some of its best features, however, are: 2 Auto save and restore opened browser windows at quitting and start (especially valuable when Safari ABENDS with multiple windows open). 3 Bookmark a group of tabs. 4 Consolidate browser windows. I just upgraded to Leopard, downloaded the Leopard version of SAFT, paid the $6 upgrade fee and my MacBook and I are happy again. Now I'll see if there's a Leopard version of Pith Helmet and Safari will be complete again. (Version 10.0.8)

MUDFLAPPER That is not entirely true. Neither SafariStand nor Safari 3 can automatically save/load browser windows when quitting and restarting Safari. This is an indispensable feature that you don't even realize you need until Safari falls victim to the spinning beachball of death and you lose all 40 tabbed URLs that took you hours to research and find. I also keep Saft around for the ADD BOOKMARK HERE menu item added to every folder in the Bookmarks Bar. You don't have to hit CMD D and search for a location to save your url. It's so convenient--I love it. For ad blocking, I've always used PithHelmet. It's still the best. (Version 10.0.9)

SJK > Neither SafariStand nor Safari 3 can automatically save/load browser windows when quitting and restarting Safari. SafariStand will if "Restore Method At Launch: Automatically Reopen Last Session (Safari)" is set under its General preferences. I prefer using "Show Restore Last Workspace Window (Stand)" to delay automatic reloading until I'm ready, e.g. to quickly browse other pages right after launching. > I also keep Saft around for the ADD BOOKMARK HERE menu item added to every folder in the Bookmarks Bar. I'm not saving bookmarks in Safari frequently enough anymore for that to have value. Nowadays most of my newer ones end up in WebnoteHappy, and a bunch of older ones are archived in DEVONthink Pro. Most of the oldest are still in Safari, originally imported from IE, long overdue for archival/deletion. > For ad blocking, I've always used PithHelmet. It's still the best. Totally agree; browsing without PH can be a hideous. Unfortunately I've never gotten machete scripts working with Safari 3; do you have that problem? Would also be nice to quell the image animations again; none of the Safari ad blockers I'm aware do it with Safari 3. (Version 10.5)

Especially regarding that you can have a free alternative with Safari Stand and the prize of Saft is rather cheap. With each update of Safari (this time from 3.1 to 3.11), Saft refuses to work completely. My update Code doesn't work for days, the Website tells me, my account doesn't exist (my email is definitely right) and blocks the login for quite some time (paranoid). So I end up missing features I have just implemented in my daily workflow. The developer hasn't responded to any of my email requests. I think I'm gonna switch back to Safari Stand.. It's a cool tool but with this kind of ridiculous "copy protection" and support, it's just completely useless. I highly recommend everyone NOT to buy it as long as the developer doesn't change that system.

PIXELJAMMER I couldn't agree more. Great product when it works, but the registration is a nightmare and I'm now going to abandon this app. I can't imagine why anyone would use such a convoluted registration scheme It's so frustrating that it makes people angry enough to post negative feedback on MacUpdate. Brilliant PR. (Version 10.5)

SURPHAZE alright, new registration system, worked out well, downloaded a license-file and this time after a system update Saft didn't cease to work. Was a cool app before, just the registration system made it bad. Now with a normal licensing system, it's a wonderful app. Love it! (Version 10.5.2)

DR FIERCE I have used SAFT since Panther. At first it was useful, but now many of the features in Leopard have made it redundant. Moreover, every update to Safari results in an error message which really slows down my aging powerbook. I tried to update and the code I used previously does not work. I unistalled it with AppZapper and I hope it works. This has become a major annoyance. (Version 10.0.7)

MEMPHISBIRD I bought Saft on March 7 on a MacUpdate Promo. Since then, there have been two updates -- which is good -- and I haven't been able to download either of them -- which is bad -- because the download code I was sent by the developer isn't working. Two emails to developer requesting help have garnered no response. I thought I was getting a good deal for $5.99 on the promo, but it's not a good deal if I get nothing for it. I think I'll take my $5.99 back, please, and donate it to the SafariStand people. (Version 10.0.7)

MUDFLAPPER That is unlike this developer. I've had to contact him a few times in the past and I always received a prompt reply. MEMPHISBIRD I don't have any download managers on my computer, and it's not the actual download that is the problem. I can't even get that far. It's the page where you download the full version, where you have to enter your email address and your eSellerate Order Number/PayPal Transaction ID. I don't have an eSellerate Order number or a PayPal Transaction ID because I bought it right here at MacUpdate. I was sent an email from the developer with a download code, and when I enter that code, it tells me "Login Failed Account cannot be found. Please verify your email. Also PayPal payment can be in pending state!" I even tried the invoice number from MacUpdate and got the same message. I don't know what other number I'm supposed to put in there, but the ones I have don't work. And still no response from the developer. I'm beginning to feel invisible. (Version 10.0.7)

MACSOLU Because SpotLight pretty much sucks. By default, it is set to not search certain areas. And because it relies upon a database that must be constantly updated, there's always a chance that the updated indexing/cataloging has yet to happen at the moment of the initiation of your search, resulting in it telling you a file does not exist when you damm well know it does. Not to mention the fact that the index/catalog database itself can become damaged and therefore returns incomplete & incorrect results. (Version 10.0.7)

STEVEN GOODHEART I've seen a few complaints, here and over at VersionTracker, about Saft, and I wanted put a good word in on Saft's behalf as a very happy user. First, this update for the new version of Safari came out one day after the 10.5.2 update -- not too shabby, and I will admit, much better than some of the older versions. Second, the developer does have an "interesting" way to do updates, but for me, it's worked like a charm. I go to: http://haoli.dnsalias.com/ld/d.php?saft_leopard and Safari autofills the email and the order number that I got when I bought Saft. (Before I click download, I disable SpeedDownload in the Safari Integration preference tab, so that Safari downloads the file. The download page at haoli tells how to do this.) After the download, I put the application in my application folder, double-click, and Saft does it's Input Manager thing, and I'm done. Couldn't be easier. Third, I have never found it hard to contact the developer and get a timely response. Fourth, the features, people, the features! Saft plains rocks. I have become totally reliant upon it's auto-tab save, crash protection, and especially its ability to save and name browser windows with any name you want, and then open these saved windows and tabs later (very similar to OmiWeb's Workspaces.) And there are literally dozen's of other cool and very useful features. If you run Saft, with SafariStand (some feature redundancies here) and Concierge, you have incredible ease of use and power at your finger tips. No wonder sites like Pimp My Safari have raved about Saft. Finally, I have no relationship to this developer, but simply want to say that I find Saft indispensable, and the fact that there's an upgrade out the very next day after the 10.5.2 Leopard update speaks very well about this developer. My 2 bits. (Version 10.0.5)

Instead go the the Download page [currently here: http://haoli.dnsalias.com/Saft/Download/index.html] Here you'll find plenty of Saft versions for all flavors of Safari, from Tiger 2.04, Tiger Safari 3 beta, & final, Leopard, etc. Had I known this, I would have demoed the beta of Safari a while back. JOBBY Installed the demo on Leopard - now I can't use CTRL+number to switch between Spaces, even when Safari is not the focused app. It seems Saft is somehow eating this keystroke globally. The "jump to bookmark bar item" feature is useful, but I switch between spaces a LOT, and don't want to use a different key shortcut for that. Please can we have an option to have Saft use a different shortcut, and to only have it absorb that shortcut when Safari has focus? Also I can no longer drag tabs between windows, like I could before installing Saft. I know it provided draggable tabs in Safari 2, but could it be made to not interfere with Safari 3's tab-dragging code? (Version 10.0.1)

PHFACTOR I have tried to upgrade to this version of Saft. Previous versions have worked wonderfully and been an essential add-in for Safari. Sad to say, I have had nothing but trouble with this latest "Leopard" compatible version of Saft. Firstly, the account and password directions at the website are confusing, downright wrong as a matter of fact. I was unable to use my earlier Paypal transaction ID as requested. After two days of emails with Hao Li, it turned out that the system took my Saft registration number instead of my Paypal transaction ID. This is not specified at all on the site. Secondly, once I had the updated software, it just plain didn't work. Safari comes up with either a menu bar only, or a menubar and a partial window that is a blank grey topped by the bookmarks bar. There is no button/address area or window title area. Thirdly, I have written about this to Mr. Hao Li (after having mentioned it in the forums) and have received absolutely no answer. While the pre-Leopard versions of Saft have behaved well, this release, and Mr. Hao Li's response, have been extremely disappointing. (Version 10.0.1)

RMNL For me Saft is an essential plugin for Safari. And it was after discovering it, that I switched from the sluggish Firefox to the faster Safari. The most important feature I use, are the URL shortcuts, which allow you to use the location bar for more purposes than addresses only. Overall it make you faster and more productive. Another useful feature is the Kiosk mode. Saft is good value for money and support is fast. OTTONOMY Almost didn't upgrade to Leopard when I found out Saft might be killed by Apple's decision to rid the OS of input managers. I'm so glad I was wrong. I can't live without Saft. When I use someone else's Mac, I feel like I'm using a retarded, incomplete version of Safari. Automatically saved browser sessions are at the top of my list. Let's see if there is something doing after this weekend (3. - 4.11.2007). (Version 10)

ALEX B The launcher idea is terrible. How is it supposed to work harmoniously with other plugins that use the same idea. Terrible. It also has some bugs. My Downloads window won't let me clear it after I download one file. The window won't show any new downloads being downloaded, though they do download even though it's not visible. The developer is in no where land. I don't know if he has some life thing going on, but multiple e-mails, bug e-mails and so on, go unacknowledged. Once you upgrade to the Leopard version, you lose the ability to download the Tiger and Tiger for Safari 3 versions. Since I wanted to try to make the tiger version work through that file edit, I couldn't download a copy. Now I have to find an illegal copy (that technically isn't illegal for me since I purchased a license) to download it and use it again since who the heck knows where the dev is. That said, it's the original Saft, just in external launcher form for Leopard. Can't live without it now, so I gotta make do. Seems like this developer is following the same suite as the TastyApps developers who made FLVR and RedSnapper. What a shame. Terrible customer support on both parts. I want more features and my requests go unanswered. I even offer up ways to make it happen not just "give me what I want" requests. Like why is the Debug menu option hidden in some hidden menu to enable a hidden menu? It makes no sense. Not only that, the debug menu turns off at the next restart so you have to go to the hidden menu to turn it back on? This should be a permanent on/off option within the Saft preference pane. Completely asinine. (Version 10)

JLUKAS You can get Saft for Leopard to load through SIMBL, so you don't have to use the launcher. 1. Download and install SIMBL (http://www.culater.net/software/SIMBL/SIMBL.php) 2. Copy Saft.bundle (in the Saft application) to the following path (creating the folders if needed): /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins 3. Ctrl-click on Saft.bundle and select Show Package Contents 4. Open Contents/Info.plist in your favorite text editor 5. Add the following segment of text just before the final /System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework 6. Save the file. Restart Safari. If the Safari menu contains About Saft, it worked! Enjoy. JLUKAS Whoops, MU ate my XML... Here's step five again, hopefully correct: 5. Add the following segment of text just before the final </dict></plist> <key>SIMBLTargetApplications</key> <key>BundleIdentifier</key> <string>com.apple.Safari</string> <key>MaxBundleVersion</key> <key>MinBundleVersion</key> <key>RequiredFrameworks</key> <key>BundleIdentifier</key> <string>com.apple.WebKit</string> <string>/System/Library/Frameworks/WebKit.framework</string> <key>TargetApplicationPath</key> <string>/Applications/Safari.app</string>

BENR Worked here too. SIMBL seems to perform a similar function to the notorious APE. Anything we should know about? If not, perhaps the developer could consider this for future distribution? (Version 10)
| Oct 30 2007 |
JLUKAS SIMBL is simply piggy-backing off of InputManagers, whereas I believe APE uses its own code injection methods. I've never heard of any problems with using SIMBL, but it is a possibility. Also, Saft was originally designed to use SIMBL, but then the developer came up with a different way to load the bundle. I guess this was due to not wanting to be dependent on another program. ALEX B I had this going good with other plugins like RedSnapper and SafariDockStatus, but Saft doesn't seem to work. When I add the plugin after editing it and load up Safari, Safari starts, but I have no browser window. Clicking New Tab or Window from the File menu seems to open one, but it's not visible and all the options to close windows or perform any task on a window is disabled as though there are no open windows, but when I quit, it says are you sure you want to quit with 5 open windows (as many times as I tried opening new windows). Sigh. I hate the launcher. (Version 10)

JOHNNY ROCKET just can't seem to get this to work. I followed the steps as best as I could, but it's not loading. Here's what I've got in the whole plist, am I missing something? JLUKAS Hmm... My NSPrincipalClass is Saft rather than NSApplication, and I don't have the NSMainNibFile key/value. I've uploaded my whole Info.plist to: http://lukassoft.com/Saft/Info.plist Oh and you are using the Leopard version, right? (Version 10)
| Nov 2 2007 |
JOHNNY ROCKET ok, this is freaky. I copied the contents of your plist that you uploaded, pasted it over the contents of my plist, saved, closed it all out. [used BBEdit] and opened Safari and no joy. Redownloaded the Jaguar version, did the same thing with the plist file, no joy. Copied Saft to the desktop and did the change to the plist file, then moved it to the /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/plugins and still no joy. Downloaded your plist file and replaced the plist file in my copy of saft and... still no joy. This is freaky. Anyone have any ideas what could be going wrong? (Version 10)

DAVERMONT I really missed Saft for the first three days after installing Leopard. The program improves Safari in so many ways it's amazing. The best feature for me is the shortcuts; to search MacUpdate for saft I simply type: mu saft Having the Enter key be a shortcut for the Next link on a page is a big timesaver as well. I only wish it would work on links that *start* with Next, as many sites use Next Page, or Next >>, which Saft ignores. I used to use the autosave tabs a lot, but not so much anymore. Some people will find that handy. The ad filtering isn't as sophisticated as PithHelmet, but it does a decent job. Saving a web page as a single PDF page is handy sometimes (print as PDF still saves a multipage PDF when you need that). Auto-hiding the downloads window is another nice feature. Downloaded files contain the URL of the web page in their Comments field, making it handy to go back to that page if you need to. Again, lots of useful improvements to Safari, well worth the $12 price. (Version 10)

RICHARD HALLAS The version I get when I download the disc image of the registered copy (not the demo) is the previous Tiger version, not the new Leopard-compatible one. Hence it doesn't work for me yet. (Version 10)

DAVERMONT You should have gotten a confirmation email with a link to the new download; the url will have the word "leopard" in it, and it works fine with Leopard. (Version 10)

WRELEVEN Nope, $6.00 upgrade to the new version unless you've recently purchased Saft Tiger. The new leopard version works, but it's of a strange way to launch Safari to say the least. I kinda wonder why something like Inquisitor works fine with the updated permissions fix but Saft now needs a loader to launch Safari each session. (Version 10)
| Oct 30 2007 |
DENIS PICOT $6 to upgrade, if the Tiger version was bought before oct.12. I purchased Saft on Oct.9, so I should have to pay again if I wanted to upgrade. I won't, as I don't agree with this marketing policy. (Version 10)

CORPSECORPS I, too recall reading something about input managers not being supported. There must be *some* way of extending Safari. I'm not using it without an ad blocker! (Version 9.0b6)

TROGGY The two latest versions (9.0b5 and 9.0b6) have broken the "check spelling as you type" function in Safari for me. Uninstalling Saft restores it. That's a deal breaker for me. (Version 9.0b6)

F451 I'm just thankful that PithHelmet came back online to address Safari 3. I did use IWEDLER little hack to make Saft work, but Saft has other issues with some of its features. I prefer PithHelmet over Saft's ad blocker, but I like the other miscellaneous Saft features beyond ad blocking. (Version 9.0b4)

IWEDLER open a Terminal window and type "defaults write /Library/InputManagers/Saft/Saft.bundle/Contents/Info SaftSupportedSafariBuild -array-add 522.12.1" 522.12.1 is the latest build of safari(3.0.3). Saft 9.0b4 works with this version after doing this. don't forget to get the newest version ... ASAP (Version 9.0b4)
