TASKMAN  It looks like the development has been resumed on this excellent software! Granted, there is still some work to do, but in the mean time you can download files from four different network from a single well-designed application.

NEONBLUE2  (On a MacBook Pro) Poisoned is a beautiful application but only on PPC Macs. I can't find anything now I'm on Intel partly due to it being PPC only so I'm stuck with FrostWire for now.

For everyone still on PPC that's having problems with connections try PoisonedAlt.

JONATHAN HELL  Poisond used to run seemlessly with my Router (Link Sys 54mbps wireless w/four port ethernet hub) and while also running limewire. now, running either causes the other's port forwarding to mess up and as a result i have to reset the router for the applications to recognize the forwarding. also, i have to restart for uploads to work on either.

before the last update i got, i could download within limewire and it would be doing the same in poisoned automatically and yet there would be only one import to itunes since the two applications somehow spoke to one another. i like to use poisoned as a fast track interface and limewire for gnutella.

also, poisoned no longer recognizes shared files that are within music folders for the artists. thus, i can only share 6GB instead of the 60GB i actually have. please email jhaack1@hotmail.com for more info.

thanks,

and keep up the good work.

posioned is the only serious file sharing program for mac besides lime (which is gnutella only) - thus, i really want to see an official 1.0 release with some serious statistics and advanced preferences. also, if you can fix all these problems and the glitches that others recommend, then you can probably switch people from limewire as well . . .

VONBRIAN  Have used Poisoned for a long time and it has been mostly trouble free. Recently however, I have noticed that if it is running and my Mac goes to sleep, any CDs I may have mounted will be dismounted when I wake the computer and become unejectable and un-remountable until I do a hard reset (shutdown and restart don't work as the OS thinks it is still there). I have a feeling that they way Poisoned scans and shares volumes has something to do with it.

PILS  Just updated from .517, and I'm starting to think Poisoned is losing its place on my list of top p2p apps. The GUI keeps screwing up, with the drawer not being able to position itself on my screen (I can only see half of it, although sometimes it seems to redraw itself into position after awhile... and then it screws up again).

I'm still getting tons more search results from xfactor. Xfactor uses basically the same networks -- although I am impressed to see the addition of the ares network to Poisoned, currently reporting 1.8 million users from ares.

So it is back to XFactor, and Azureus (for bittorrent) is still my top pick for filesharing overall.

ANONYMOUS  What does this mean and why am I getting this error message?

You seem to have a problem with the gIFT daemon crashing. Would you like to reset Poisoned in an attempt to correct this?

Poisoned was not able to reset from previous versions due to an error in permissions. [???] can not move incoming folder to trash. Please do that manually.

Thanks

ANONYMOUS  After a long period of working great, .517 started doing the same thing to me a few weeks ago. No amount of repairing permissions, or attempting to delete everything I could identify as related before reinstall, did any good. Hopefully .519 will work.

I'm fuzzy now on whether the problem started at the the same time as the 10.3.7 update. I did experience some other odd behaviour then, like a two-minute delay before the desktop would appear if I was plugged into a network where connectivity to the net was dead upstream. Something is trying to connect to the net, and it wasn't just the network time setting function, I tried turning that off.

GRAF  I used to be a big fan and advocate for Poisoned because it worked a thousand times better than any other Mac P2P apps. But then Poisoned began to work less and less with each new release, until now it basically takes up hard drive space without contributing any files to it. I've switched to Cabos, which works great---better even than Poisoned back when it was good.

TONYC  There is a problem with Gnutella (12/30/04). It is causing Poisoned to crash. The workaround: Disable the Gnutella plugin and then do an update of gift. You will have to struggle to open preferences and get to "plugins" while constantly clicking "no" on the update dialog box that will keep appearing. (Quick mousing will be needed but you have unlimited tries). Once you have the Gnutella plugin unchecked, turn off Gift at the top right hand corner of search page, then from the "Poisoned" menu do an update of gift.

JAZZ  I tried for many years to find a decent p2p program for the Mac. I tried LimeWire, Aquisition, Neo, and others, and noticed one thing about them all: even in the two or three times they returned any results from my searches at all, the files they came up with were totally undownloadable. Not one single file came through any of those programs. In near-desperation I decided to give p2p one last chance and I downloaded Poisoned, and found it a godsend. Everything works. Finally!

The only negative things I can say about it is this: I would really like to be able to sort the downloads list by the columns (by name, size, completeness, time to complete, etc.) I've missed that for a while now. Also, it is still rather unstable and buggy. However, it's still in development, so that's to be expected. At least it actually works, which is more than can be said for LimeWire, Aquisition, or Neo.

Thanks Poisoned!

ANDREW HAAS  I have used both xFactor and Poisoned extensively, and both have yielded the same results-neither of them offer great downloads (they both use the same networks, so it figures). xFactor started out well (meaning, i got decent download speeds for pretty much anything I searched for) but soon fell into what Poisoned fell into-big queues, 0 users, protocol errors, etc. And xFactor uses about 40% or more CPU pretty much all the time. poisoned uses between 10-20% about half the time, and less than that the remainder of the time. Poisoned still offers downloads, so I don't know how people can say xFactor is better.

ANSWEROR  the dev of XFactor (Jolix) who is an earlier dev of Poisoned released a version which he named Poisoned. He stole Poisoned's code which is OK, but he released it as a Poisoned update which really wasn't OK. The dev of Poisoned and the admin of MacUpdate agreed to ban XFactor from MU's lists; and that's OK. ANONYMOUS  This isn't a discussion board but for some reason MacUpdate banned XFactor, you should email them with your question. If you do a Google search on XFactor you'll find it.

I switch to XFactor also, I get really good results and good downloads at a good speed.

Whatever program you choose, you must forward your ports on your routers if you are behind a Firewall so that we all get what we are requesting.

ANONYMOUS  This is the worst version of poisoned that I have ever used. Where is the Gnutella Network? Why are 75% of the files that I can miraculously download corrupted? Why will Poisoned show me a file downloading at 54kb/sec and then I go to play it and *fwip* NOTHING! I think all of these issued need to be addressed before any "fun" new features are added to future versions.

DOGGER BLUE  A great filesharing app, with the built-in advantage that it avoids Java implementations and relies on the giFT project.

It does require a bit more babysitting than LimeWire, mostly due to the unavailability of an ever-find-new-sources mode, which is apparently due to limitations inherent in the giFT daemon (i.e. not solvable directly by Poisoned devs). Thinking outside the box a bit, however, the same problem could be addressed by implementing an auto-re-search function to keep the list of available sources fresh. With this feature added, you could basically run the app hands-off.

As it is, you really need to wander by and refresh all your searches to keep your sources from getting stale. This is not strictly required in LimeWire, but practically speaking, you are way better off if you do it, anyway. So I don't find any big difference from using LimeWire (or any others) ... I end up babysitting occasionally in any case.

Poisoned is much faster than LimeWire as an app (not talking about download speed which is totally independent of app though many imagine otherwise). It also is much simpler to install than most other P2P apps. The menu option 'Reset Poisoned' is enough to take care of your installation getting into an odd condition (something all giFT implementations are vulnerable to).

It's my current P2P app of choice.

STELLA  Still the best filesharing app. (I think) for OSX!!!!

I takes a while figuring out how it works best: al lot a lot clicking and trying stuff out but once you get used to how it all works, it works brilliantly....If you have problems then just start up again or download the thing again! That will usually solve the problem, otherwise there is an excellent forum that will answer your questions!

It is a simple light program that usually gets my what I want! I love it!

DOGGER BLUE  That's odd ... I'm currently running Poisoned on an old PowerMac 7500 with a Sonnet Crescendo G3 350 MHz card. That makes my system a LOT slower that your G3 900 iBook (due to the ancient motherboard it's even a fair bit slower than a normal G3/350).

I'm downloading about ten files with fifty more queued, and the CPU usage of Poisoned is hovering around 10%.

I think you need to review your OS installation or your setup or post a question in the Poisoned Forums at the Poisoned Project website -- your experience is not at all typical for this software.

Jul 12 2004

DOGGER BLUE  Actually, I tested it out a little bit more ... you don't actually have to stop and restart the giFT daemon to get your downloads back. If you just disconnect from the daemon and then reconnect to it, often your missing downloads will reappear. Just watch the scrollbar and do it a few times times it's as small as possible (meaning the list is as long as possible). This is a totally intermittent bug -- but the workaround is low impact, you don't even have to interrupt any other running downloads.

RAYLENE  The continuing drama of this app's icon is pretty humorous. After a series of really junky ones, the last (.515) one looked very smooth and professional, but now it's already gone and the new one is a globe wearing a green diaper. Wonder what we'll see with .517. . . .

With the iTunes store on a mission to host "all the music there is" (see numerous news items from May), it's getting easier all the time to just pluck down a dollar and grab a tune in the easiest, most reliable way possible: Legally.

JOHN Q. BLACKBEARD  I don't particularly like how each new version forgets a few of my preferences. Other than that, it's all I could expect with a P2P app. I.e., it's OK for small things you can't find elsewhere, but it'd be mighty frustrating without a complementary Usenet feed. It's much, much nicer than the awful iSwipe, which is ugly, actively hostile, and resistant to user configuration. And let's not talk about the Windows P2P clients! POISONEDTIBOOK  STAY AWAY FROM THIS VERSION! I feel totally betrayed by the poisoned team, since this version (without any user confirmation) totally trashed my prefs file AND my huge download queue. My download queue consisted of hundreds of megs of partial downloads, which all went up in smoke when I installed v.515. Because I'm stuck with a dialup connection, I've lost countless days worth of d/l time. (I'm overseas--my ISP still charges by the hour!)

I don't mind the programmers changing the way poisoned deals with it's partial downloads. But to trash all of their user's partial downloads (without asking first) is beyond stupid. I wonder what they were thinking (or smoking) last week?

SHAGGY  Jake:

The point of a file sharing app is to SHARE YOUR FILES so that other people can download them!!! If everyone had the same perspective as you, poisoned, kazaa, and all the other networks wouldn't exist. Also, a court recently decided that your service provider cannot be subpoenaed by the RIAA, therefore you really don't have much to worry about. Remember, chances of getting caught for filesharing are slimmer than getting struck by lightning. And finally, poisoned is the best app that I've seen for apple, with consistently great updates and reliable searches. I hope the developer keeps up the good work.

I love it too because it is written natively for OS X and not in Java like some other P2P apps, which means the GUI is true aqua and uses any themes you have installed.

I just have two minor gripes:

There should be a column for connection speed. I like to know before I download from someone if they've got DSL, Cable, T3 or dialup. It means I can select which sources will be the quickest. Other P2P apps do this. I apologise if this feature is already there, but I can't find it if it is.

The other thing is a bug with the drawer when using themes. When using brushed metal appearance, it shows buttons at the top of the drawer, partially hidden by the "filter box". Obviously they should not be there. Also, when the poisoned window is closed with the drawer out, a white box appears on the desktop where the drawer was, and doesn't go away until the poisoned window is brought back, the drawer closed, and the window closed again. Also, when using WindowShade X, when the window is made transparent with the drawer out, the drawer remains opaque.

These are minor gripes, and I know a lot of people don't use themes, so the drawer bugs won't bother them, but I'd love to see these bugs ironed out.

BRIAN  OK, for all of you morons out there who:

1: Complain about the icon: Geezus Christ, change the icon then if you don't like it. It's reallllllly not that hard to do. In fact, copy the icon from the old version and paste it into the new, and stop posting here about useless crap. (BTW, the icon of the previous versions was from an icon set published widely on the web, and could not be used for commercial/business purposes, which is probly why he changed it to the new one)

2: To the guy who complained because he tried downloading 150 files at once, I hope you get arrested.

3: To those who complain about not finding enough files, maybe if you actually SHARED some files, others would do the same, and voila, more files to download.

This is by far the best file sharing proggie for the mac, and I hope the developer continues to improve on it.

I then downloaded 16 different songs from various artists, genres and the like. 14 of those have turned out corrupted. They seem to download OK and then at the 90-95% mark they hurry up or stop and I get corrupted music files. BEZIERBOY  The good: Finds plenty of results and downloads them fine for me. Switched from v0.48 for good.

The bad: frequently crashes or locks up with spinning beachball when cancelling downloads, and can get slow when running. Will also suck up a LOT of CPU cycles and bandwidth if you let it, but all P2P programs do this.

Overall, I'd say it's one of the best P2P download programs for the Mac, and certainly the best multi-protocol one.

Also, heavy selection of searched fiels will lead to setting the search results back to zero or bombing of the application.

If a user goes offline and never comes back online - thats not Poisoned's fault. If you get lots of results but none or only few downloads start, that must be a problem with your network set up. I know it's not my ports or anything because Aquisition, AcqLite, MLMac, iSwipe and all the other File Sharing Apps work perfectly.

In my experiences, Aquisition gets better results with certain files and Poisoned gets better results with other files.. uhm in thise case... the wise thing to do would to have both (or as many file sharing programs you can get your hands on) :P

DR. MCB.  Agree with frustrated downloaders. Have found many songs I wanted, but have only successfully downloaded three of them.

GRINCH  That is the nature of P2P. Just because you see it, doesn't mean you will get it. Sometimes you are trying to download the same file that 1,000 or more other people are trying to download, and they got in line before you. Some people got in line after you, but their software says that they are first in line, or they are sharing more files, so they go ahead of you.

Remember, you get what you pay for. Sometimes that old Bon Jovi live song from that concert in Boston is really a variant of some virus...but don't blame Bon Jovi when your computer goes boom. And don't blame the software for getting it to you. And don't charge people to get stuff for free (LimeWire, I'm talking to you).

POISONED NEEDS WORK  This program is the biggest tease. Incredible search results, Terrible download success. 1 out of 100 files will download. With every update, I hope this will change, but I've been disappointed everytime.

ANONYMOUS  This latest version has the tendency to behave strangely. Blinks on and off and removes the entire search results, meaning you have to input the search query again.

If it could actually download even 25% of what it offers this app would kick ass all the way.

ANONYMOUS  This app found better results in previous versions. The new version of mlmac allows for much faster downloads. The previous versions would find files and have good speed, the last three updates have not been able to download a single file.

PEDRO PERES  This program has lots of problems:

1- Can't connect to Gnutella networks ( that's the network with more mac software)

2- the Filters, don't work , when you select in the filter that you just want software form the search that you are about to do , it appears almost just music.

3-when you download a song from multiple users the song , almost always is corrupted after the donwload finishes.

VIRGINIA PLAIN  No no no---keep using 4.9.5 and do NOT download 4.9.7---the FastTrack port number keeps reverting back to "0" and the application never connects to FastTrack.

Unfortunately, 4.9.7 replaced older prefs files so you have to trash everything but the application (4.9.5) and start from scratch.

Great program, but this upgrade doesn't work.

ANONYMOUS  Watch your version numbers there. This program is still a beta; it is no where near a 4.9.5 or 4.9.7

THE OMNIPOTENT MUMMY  I've successfully downloaded 2 files with this program. I've successfully downloaded thousands of files with Acquisition. Poisoned finds lots of files, but doesn't connect to any of the hosts, even with all the correct configurations set. It seems to work for some, but has never worked for me. Acquisition, on the other hand, has never let me down. Until Poisoned actually starts downloading like its meant to do, I'll stick with Acquisition.

FLARCH  re Anonymous

Well made?! I'm in the design business and i say BLEAH! It's generic, doesn't evoke anything about poison, doesn't stand out well on a light background, looks cartoonish, and it's just boring.

And why's a magnifying glass floating in a beaker supposed to mean?

MONKEY  if thats the sir kirby that hangs arround the poisoned forum i'm surprised, cos there he is really helpful and positive. i've never used a p2p before apart from neo and that was in it's dying days. all i know is that ashton is always in the forums helping out with mine and others noob ignorance, listening to feedback and responding with new versions every three weeks. so if that is sir kirbys definition of an arrogant bastard, well ashton you go on being being one. The world needs more bastards like you.
