Oops.

I spoke too soon after reading the 'ReadMe' file when i wrote my previous review.

Now that i've had a chance to use more of the functions longer, and attempted to make heavier use of PPP, i had to knock some stars off here and there.

Some things don't work quite as described. Some don't always function at all, or else some strange behaviors need to be explained in documentation. Several tend to cause Finder to *CRASH*!

On the site it says this is the final release for version 2, but it needs some serious work.

VERYCARLA  I'd just like to say that while I've had a FEW crashes resulting from PPP2, they are the exception rather than the rule. It's been stable for me, and I use it every single day, sometimes several times a day.

2.0f seems to have fixed some of the instability.

The thing just doesn't do anything very useful while the non-OS X widgets and the ways they work aren't intuitive at all.

XENOPHILE  WTF dude? How many bad reviews are you going to give this? Some amateur developer created PPP, put it up at MU for all to use - for FREE - so you show your appreciation with a series of whiney rants?

Your "Aaargh!" complaint about PPP being an unsuitable replacement for QuickImage is downright bizarre, it seems you believe setnaN is somehow responsible for providing you with a QuickImage replacement for free. As if the "Aaargh!" wasn't enough, posted another review to SHOUT YOUR OUTRAGE AT PPP FALLING SHORT OF THE ALMIGHTY QUICKIMAGE. Ok, we got the point, but you're outrage was still boiling over, because you had to correct your second review. Was it to apologize for being so rude? No, it was to downgrade your two star rating to a one star rating! For FREEWARE!

I've seen some rude reviews over the years here at MU, but yours is one for the history books.

**...

Well, having had some time to use it, and get used to it, i can say that it's not too awful, but that i was right the first time around.

THIS IS NOT EVEN CLOSE TO BEING A SUBSTITUTE FOR QuickImage!

PPP is non-intuitive, to put it mildly. The small, grey, incomprehensible toolbar is awful. After wasting time clicking on things for the past couple weeks, trying to find something useful here, i finally took time out of my busy schedule to read the documentation, if it can be called that. Didn't help.

I can't figure out what functionality the positive reviews are talking about. It doesn't do much of use other than let you view images and some basic info about them. The rest is fluff.

I'm a heavy mouse user and a lot isn't available without keyboard shortcuts.

The UI has some good things going for it, but i'm always switching to something huge like Photoshop or GraphicConverter to do simple little edits which it would be great to have right in PPP, like those found in QuickImage.

It is, at least, fast, though that may just be the new computer. Can't compare since QuickImage won't work on Mac Pro.

Price is right, especially because it doesn't do much.

CORPSECORPS  First my comments concerning this being or NOT being a replacement for QuickImageCM were in response to previous messages such as:

-----------------------

CYBERATOMIC Thank You!

This is so awesome. I was so used to QuickImageCM and without it working on an Intel machine, sucked...

But now PicturePopProCM has come into my life and I am so very happy!

The functionality of this little app is excellent -- this is how the finder SHOULD BE!

-----------------------

I too used that software heavily, and this is NOTHING like it, as it had many editing functions.

There were almost 2 months between my first and second comment during which i searched in vain for something like QuickImageCM and i had come across additional mentions of this. I didn't remember it well by then and after trying it again, i decided to give it a real review.

As for the third review knocking off a star as compared to the previous one, i clearly explained that after more extensive use of more of the features, i found it to be more poorly designed and unstable than i had previously given it credit for.

Not sure why you're griping about it now anyway. The thing hasn't been updated since that time.

ANDREW SCOTT  This software offers an impressive array of functionality. As a CM item it's always at your fingertips and seems noticeably faster than Preview and many of its replacements.

The only problem with it is its interface. It makes use of what a first seems like a welter of icons. The novice user will spend quite some time learning what they mean, along with their keyboard shortcuts, using only a fraction of the features, or giving up altogether. Those who persevere may find its power and flexibility indispensable (I haven't had it long enough to judge yet).

The interface desperately needs to adhere to OS X interface standards, such as the close box position and style, and would be aided tremendously by the addition of tool tips for all icons. A pop-up palette of shortcuts and would also be helpful.

A small point: the developer makes use of the term "diaporama" to refer to, I think, slideshow functionality. I can't find this in my dictionary so perhaps it's a technical term or a translation mistake but I suggest "slideshow" would be clearer to most English readers.

Altogether a useful and powerful addition to the Mac OS but on need to some polish.

CYBERATOMIC  Any idea of if or when this might become Universal Binary?

I use to use QuickImage CM and it rocked. However it is not Intel-friendly.

ALLBLUE  The previous version is working perfectly with 10.3.9 for me - another excellent contextual menu enhancement to the OS. And now confirmation that it will remain freeware - merci beaucoup!

ANONYMOUS  ok, here's some explanation, english is not my first language so i hope to be understand. First, since b8, i don't wanted any new version (until the final) to appear on any tracker, but sometime it happens, trackers robots and editors are efficients ! I've emailed every editors, some removed it, some don't. Now i've got to make do with it :-(

In spite of his version number (i don't consider version numbering as promotion system but state of evolution of software), PicturePopPro is now 3 years old. Initially i was thinking that the final release will be a shareware and put a date limitation for some other reasons too, but since one year i was thinking about release the final as freeware... and now since few month,.. i'm sure, it will be freeware/donationware, without limitations of time or use, nor boring remainders, like all my other public softwares. You can find some french forum where i'm talking about this. So, in conclusion, if people want to test a old, slow, but stable version, try 1.0b10. If adventurers people want to test PicturePopPro current beta that is really faster, more evolved, check the website, but please consult the read me, don't report bug until i ask and keep cool with problems ! :-)

merci beaucoup :) setnan

JIMW  Based on descriptions and things like expiration dates, I "smell" freeware or donationware product turning into a shareware product and I get the sense the developer is using the current user base to test it. However I have no absolute proof of this.

There is nothing inherently wrong about this but in my opinion, if this is what the developers are doing they should be "up front" about it, by letting people know and what they should eventually have to pay. That is what is fair and the right thing to do. Additionally people who use it in this manner and expose themselves to the risk of problems, should be compensated by being offered the final product at substantial discount. After all, they are "working" for the developer by beta testing the product. Again, if they knew this up front they might be encouraged to register in order to take advantage of such an offer.

"Bait and Switch" sales tactics really irritate me because when it happens I feel intentionally deceived by the person that did it. It strikes me as a variation of embezzlement.

Therefore I am choosing for myself, not to use this product, at least anymore until the developers clarify their position on this subject.

ANONYMOUS  same here too: PicturePopProCm1.0b9ex crashes Finder (OS X 10.3.5), each time, every time.

Throwing out PopPro1.0b9ex, throwing in PicturePop1.0: everything back to normal! :)

squeeze some bugs ... otherwise: love PicturePop; keep it up!

RADD  This is a great contextual menu item. I used to use the More File Info CMM constantly under OS9 and was very dismayed that it never made it to OSX.

I also previously use PicturePop (totally different CM) but missed several features.

PicturePopPro easily surpasses both of my previous contextual image viewers in features. It definitely has room for improvement and needs a few bug fixes, but it is definitely worth putting on your watch list.

However, there have been several releases since 0.7ex... I recommend visiting the site for a more up-to-date version.

BCWINTERS  PicturePop was actually released before QuickImage; the developer of PicturePop discusses this (in rather difficult to understand Babelfish-translated English) on his website. It's good to see competition between two similar applications, though. Keeps everybody on their toes.
