EDIFIED  I've used this on sites in the past and it's really excellent. I now do the same thing serverside with PHP but for static implementations this is pretty hard to beat.

I love it kryptiniacably, Ed

ITBEDAVE  I downloaded and tried this app on a tip from an OWC newsletter. Overall, it's a great app! I like how much nicer it builds pages than iPhoto does on it's own.

That said - what it doesn't tell you up front is that, IF you use Galerie's comment feature (which allows you to let viewers comment on your photo galeries which are hosted on THEIR servers) - it also AUTOMATICALLY assumes you want to share your uploaded/hosted galerie with the world, and publishes a thumbnail and a link to your galerie on their "Gallery of Galeries" website.

Needless to say, this was a concern to me as I may not wish to share personal family photos with the world by default, nor do I need that kind of hit to my limited bandwidth.

THE ONLY way to keep them private is to go to your Galerie Administration page (which they send you a link to after you signup so you can use their feedback/comment system in with your galeries) and manually select each galerie you want to keep private. You then get a message saying their server will be updated with that preference within 15 minutes.

I went to the software maker's support sight and asked them about this, and why they wouldn't automatically, by default, assume people wanted to maintain their privacy and instead have them choose to share their galeries instead of basically forcing them to opt-out.

Unfortunately, my concerns were summarily dismissed as "trivial."

http://www.myriad-online.com/cgi-bin/bbs/YaBB.pl?board=galerie;action=display;num=1156990176

Even though this is free software - don't take your privacy for granted.

LUCKY8  Thank you Itbedave, for pointing this out. I read the forum thread you linked to, and was appalled at how you were treated. I think your concerns are quite valid, and being told off in such a rude way is unforgivable. Regardless of the issue, such callousness is reason enough for me not even to try their software.

GRANDDUC  ITBEDAVE got the authors' gander up by clearly insinuating that they were somehow making money from selling access to people's private galleries. That is no way to request a feature on quality freeware. No reason there to boycott anyone.

ITBEDAVE  the last commenter is likely linked to Galerie - as he CLEARLY didn't read my post her not my posts on the Galerie forums - or just isn't interested in the truth.

The point behind the post had NOTHING to do with someone making money - but EVERYTHING to do with a software developer posting galleries of photos that MOST people would assume were being created for private use as part of their PUBLIC collection without CLEARLY disclosing ahead of time that they were doing it.

It has EVERYTHING to do with being up front, honest and transparent in their intentions and NOTHING to do with profit. I even said I would gladly pay for this software - it is good - with the exception that the authors are rude, inconsiderate, and not interested in feedback from their customers or their customer's privacy.

JULIEW  Downloaded the dmg, mounted, duplicated it to the desktop, unmounted image. Opened folder, launched the app. Elected not to use the simple interface.

Changed some settings (lots of options), tried to select a template - program then asked *me* where its folder of templates was. Its in its folder with the application, presumably right where the developer put it. Selected 1 of the 18 galleries (Anthracite shadow) and clicked "Generate Gallery".

As it processed photos it showed an apparently demo photo of a child which was not present in the output. Weird.

Index.html page opened in Safari. Clicking thumbnail links did nothing but spin Safari's gear for a second - no new page, no error. Manually opened the thumbs.html page, links work on that one.

Gallery format looks nice but the image quality was horrid despite the fact that none of the images needed to be resized (I already did that before testing gallery generation programs.) Went back and removed the setting to "Use Picture Frame" and regenerated - that was it - the picture quality appeared equal to the source images.

Drug program to the trash making a mental note to look for newer versions in the future, wrote this review.

Overall, lots of options, poorly implemented interface (even in the simplified mode - difficult to guess where any specific settings will be - in preferences? under menus? in the main window?), nice looking galleries but flawed html output.

Looking forward to a version that can output pages which work in Safari.

BJK  Does what should (most of the times). Easy-to-use interface. Templates strike a good mix of style and originality. I wish copyright would not require to keep the "created with Galerie" link on one's private pages. But then ... it is free after all. Thanks to the developer for that.

One caveat, and I assume the developers are listening:

data loss. When Galerie warns it will delete contents of a folder it means everything in that folder, not just items previously created by Galerie. I lost some of my own text this way. Maybe a) an extra warning could help users and b) also to not physically delete the folder contents but move them to the trash instead.

One suggestion for improvement: Allow users to set max height and max width at the same time. I want my pictures to fit on the screen at all times. But Galerie will only respect either a maximum width or a maximum height. I found no way to specify both numbers and tell Galerie to scale by applying both limits

MANO  Thank you so much for making this.

AND thank you for offering it for free.

This software is something that Apple should have included in iPhoto but did not.

I am always amazed at the quality of the free & open source software that developers offer.

Thank you again for offering this application free of cost and for the many hours involved in developing it.

JEFF  Does all that it says, and more!

So far, I have no problems at all with this free application. In my opinion, this is one of the best freeware apps, ever. Anyone—from my grandma to a power user—can dig into this app and find more and more useful features. I love being able to customize just about every aspect of every page and piece of text; I can even design my own templates or modify others!

What more can you ask of a free app?

/USR/BIN/PAUL  2 thumbs up to this new release!!! I finally have virtually all the functionality with this app. Now only if the templates were better looking as is Picture Arena's templates. Picture Arena did an awesome job on their templates, however I do not want to replace my iPhoto, I just want a good Photo Gallery with good templates. BTW, much better icon than before, however it is difficult to see the small thumbnails in the icon.

ANONYMOUS  Hate is just a word like any other. It's your problem if you don't like it not the poster's. I often hear people telling their children not to use it which is insane. It's not the word, it's the other person's interpretation of it and in this case you're wrong. Hate is a wonderful word.

ANONYMOUS  First, he doesn't say he doesn't like the word so you are wrong there.

Second, the word "hate" is not open to interpretation as you claim. It is a clearly and specifically defined word with no ambiguity whatsoever. You are wrong again.

Parents telling kids not to use it are probably trying to teach their kids the power of correct word usage (i.e. "hate" is very strong, "don't like" is more mild).

Unfortunately for you, your parents aparently did not teach you this. On the flip side, since you seem so thoroughly ignorant of something as simple as the usage of a common word, you are probably very young yourself so there is still time for your mom and/or dad to educate you.

ST  I have to admit I agree that the icon could be changed but I love the developer's response, hee, hee!

Anyone who complains (even politely or with nothing but good intentions) about ANY aspect of a free application needs to be prepared to put their money where their mouth is.

FYI, I thought one of my favorite free applications website ( SlashDock ) could do with some changes. Rather than tell the author, "You should change your website" I went and did it for him. Without asking. He loved the results and now uses my free design for his free application. That is how this should work. :)

TIMOTHY M. HUGHES  I am really happy with the results Galerie has in web-publishing photographs. I have one suggestion which I believe would benefit the app. greatly. Currently, you can set the 'Pictures' to a Maximum size in pixels. Well, this works wonderful for horizontally oriented photos, but... I prefer a smaller size for vertical photos due to monitors smaller v-height. So may suggestion is to add a field for 'Maximum Vertical size in pixels' or something to that extent.

MOZKART  This progam is an absolute must if you use iPhoto. You build great looking websites in minutes just clicking buttons.

A web site on a CD is the best way I found to share pictures : everybody can see the pictures through their browser whatever the platform & software installed. Galerie allows you to add automatically the orginal picture files.

You can do some customization of the web pages through the basic interface, and if you're a bit more adventurous, it's fairly easy to modify the templates that come along the program. If you create new templates, you can post them to be shared.

Combine Galerie and iPhoto Library Manager, and you'll have a brand new improved iPhoto. For free.

BRITAIN W.  I like it. It doesn't integrate with iPhoto as well as BetterHTMLExport (q.v.), but it does a comparable job [with some extra features, like adding watermarks to the output photos] and it's FREE.

Some of the initial templates were less than spectacular-looking, but it's easy to modify a template to make the output pages match your site design. And it looks like the new version will have much more creative templates [the kitchy picture-frames, the upcoming auto-advance slideshow feature].

I like it a lot. It is my tool of choice for web photo galleries.
