SECTION8  I don’t know what it was, but system preferences could not swap my modifier keys on my new G19 for the life of it. no matter what i selected in the modifier keys section of the keyboard pref pane, nothing would happen - my mouse would register the changes, but the keyboard acted as if nothing was different. Double Command did it in 2 seconds flat with zero issues. Thank you very much!

3ABNPUB  I have the same problem with settings not holding/sticking with version 1.6.8. It seems every time I log in I have to manually activate my settings (even though I have set it to supposedly do that when I log in automatically). Other than that, it works fine.

DRDUL  Love it! I've struggled for two years to get my brain to remember fn-delete, with not much success. Installed DoubleCommand today and set it to do only one thing — remap the backslash to forward-delete. Already it's reduced my frustration level when typing on my MacBook.

For those who might wonder (like I did) what the numbers mean to the left of the edit buttons at the top of the pref pane, refer to this page for an explanation: http://doublecommand.sourceforge.net/install.html. At first, I was worried that I had somehow remapped 131072 key combinations!

APIKOROS  Aargh! I cannot remove Double Command! I did deactivate it, then deleted the pref pane... but the keyboard change— forward slash acts as forward delete— remains! And I can't get DC's instaler to re-install the app so I can try making the keyboard revert to normal... and I keep getting kernel panics that cite:

"Kernel loadable modules in backtrace (with dependencies):

com.baltaks.driver.DoubleCommand(1.6.5)@0x59102000->0x59107fff

dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOHIDFamily(1.5.2)@0x636000

com.apple.iokit.IOBluetoothFamily(2.1f14)@0xa59000->0xa8ffff

BSD process name corresponding to current thread: kernel_task"

HELP! These panics are making me nuts!

APIKOROS  Seems to cause regular kernel panics, using an Apple wireless aluminum keyboard (with only one substitution: forward slash acts as forward delete) with an Intel Core Duo iMac running OS 10.5.2.

KUPHD  1.6.6b3 doesn't seem to work at all. I have a Logitech PC keyboard which, without DoubleCommand, has the Option key functioning as the Command key. I've been using DoubleCommand to swap the Option and Command keys. With 1.6.6b3, none of the settings stick. However, going back to 1.6.6b1 makes it work again.

SAMPLER  PB G4 OS X 10.5.1 1.65 fine 1.66b1 not.

On other lists, users of 1.6.6b1 have reported many problems. On my system it caused no crashes but would not hold its settings. On the advice of a poster to Version Tracker, I installed 1.65. I have one substitution:- enter- acts as -control-. It's working fine.

OZEAN  This highly useful software has been updated several times – check out the developer page for the newest version. Good news: it seems the developer wants to include support for multiple keyboards! That is exactly what I need. :)

AGLZEN  Still no luck on MBPs.

Any hope that this will be updated to work?

I've used Doublecommand for years, and it's become an indispensible part of my mac!

JOKKE  I've been using DoubleCommand for years to remap the enter key on Apple's laptops to the option key (like it should have been).

Very hard to live without and the new Universal Binary (and Tiger support, woohoo) makes my MacBook even better.

GAZMAN  Excellent, just what I was looking for - the enter key on my PowerBook now acts as a command key plus I now have the bonus of using shift-backspace as a forward delete.

So far its working very well.

G.  DO NOT INSTALL THIS THING!!!

My first kernel panic with tiger >:-((

It is a nice idea to add a delete key on a laptop, but it does not work with OS 10.4.2. Big KP!!! It is a dangerous hack if you are not an experienced user.

You don't need to reinstall your system:

1° start with Shift pressed

2° delete the DoubleCommand folder in /Library/StartupItems

3° delete the DoubleCommand preference pane in /Library/PreferencePanes

ANONYMOUS  Caused a kernel panic on my 17" G4 PowerBook. Had to reinstall the OS to get my machine back, and as a test, I tried to reinstall DoubleCommand again, and once again, could not start up my machine.

Too bad... I really liked this utility for Panther.

"2005-05-27

The requests for a DoubleCommand upgrade to work with Mac OS 10.4 keep coming in, all I can say is that I will be getting hold of Mac OS 10.4 in June, and I'll get DoubleCommand working as soon as I can."

JENDAHL  Bad form to reply to my own post, but thanks to the X4U list, I discovered it's no longer necessary to use Double Command to "fix" the command and option key problem on a non-Mac USB keyboard (i.e. Microsoft keyboards).

You can properly map the Windows>Option and Alt>Command by using the Keyboard/Mouse system preference panel. Click the "Modifier Keys..." button. In the window, change Option to Command, and Command to Option. Close the panel and you should be good to go.

JENDAHL  This is a great piece of software. Unfortuantely, it looks like it breaks under Tiger (10.4). I can edit the prefs, but it reports it is not running. Bummer.

MAV.RC  Here we are once again: when I first got my Powerbook 12" revB about 15 months ago, no one could remap the enter key until Doublecommand did it. Now, I get a new Powerbook and once again the enter key can't be remapped - until Doublecommand does it again.

Guess that makes you my hero twice.

And if you had spent 10 or 20 seconds at the developer's website, you'd have the answer to your question.

ANONYMOUS  Been using this program for over two years. It is absolutly fantastic, I am not even sure which version I am using, all I care about is changing the enter key to a command key, this makes using a sligtly older power book absolutly loveley.

TOURIST  uControl is pretty cool, but eventually it generates errors on my machine. Like 'kext not loaded' and crap like that. DoubleCommand is configure-once-forget-it's-there and it has always worked for me. This gets five stars. Thanks Michael.

Oh, and I also like how it does not put a kext in my system extensions folder. I hate when apps do that.

GREEN_BIBBERS  This is an essential _freeware_ that I've used since 10.1 to swap the useless enter key on my laptops (TiBook and now 12" PB) for a fn key. Some quick text editing and clicking a script to install and update is so simple and direct that you must be a moron to need something easier. If you want to pay money to have the same capabilities, you're a sucker and a bit lazy.

DBOROD  This utility is a bit nerdy, and since the code is GPL's you can expect other utilites to soon incorporate the full gamut of key remappings under Panther, but for now, this utility is the only way for me to re-map the enter key on my powerbook to another function key under Panther. (I find it very useful to be able to page up/page down with one hand (function + up/down arrow).

MACLECTIC  I recommed uControl over DoubleCommand. Unless something has changed dramatically, DoubleCommand requires some obscure setup and configuration to work that is error prone and confusing.

I tried DoubleCommand before uControl.

uControl is a pref pane with an installer that allows configuration on-the-fly (unlike DoubleCommand, I believe) with a simple UI. It also allows reliable fn key swapping.

uControl 1.3.6b reportedly works with Panther (I use 1.3.5 on Jaguar).

If someone could tell me the advantages of DoubleCommand over uControl, I might try it again, but uControl does all the same stuff as far as I can tell.

ANONYMOUS  DoubleCommand seems intimidating at first, but if you take a moment to read the installation instructions, it's easy and makes more sense. Plus it's easy to disable and uninstall. On the other hand, uControl (with it's "friendly" installer) won't even install on certain versions of OS X and once it does, it's your guess on whether it will work on your PowerBook.

MACLECTIC  This seemed like something really cool, but the two things I wanted it to do (disable capslock and swap function keys) don't work on my PB G4/800.

I may play with it a bit more to see if anything works, but it was a disappointment. Guess you can't ask for much since it's freeware.

The documentation is pretty poor. Lots of vague statements, like such and such only works on some such and such.

Notes:

- The installer assumes it will be run from the "DoubleCommand" folder, so don't rename the folder.

- There is no uninstaller (I assume you just move DoubleCommand/ from the /Library/StartupItems/ using sudo mv?).

- Configuring the thing is easy, but prone to error.

- Installs in your main /Library rather than in your /Library/, so if it breaks it breaks everything rather than just the one account.
