KPS Simply doesn't work. Assuming a download starts at all (fewer than 1 in 5 do) it just dies off and goes to zero. Have tried it on several different networks in different parts of the country and it has NEVER worked long enough to complete a single download. Even torrents that have hundreds of seeds either fail to start at all or crawl along at a useless 2K/sec for a few minutes before coming to a complete stop. Nice idea, but a complete waste of time in implementation. Yeah, I know some people get it to work, but I've tried 3 different versions on several completely different networks and it has NEVER once lived up to its promise. Obviously it could be some sort of configuration issue, but the app gives no useful diagnostics, no real way to change settings that actually help and no way to test what is happening. I've tried it on several different computers as well and it's always the same -- all hype, no function. (Version 4.27.2)

SPRINGHEELMAC I had the same problem, until I went into the prefs and adjusted the upload/download speeds. It helps to lower the upload speeds, at least until you get a complete file. Then when I'm done, I increase it while my computer is idle so others can get it quickly. It could also be the particular torrent. The one I tried was obscure and didn't have that many seeds, but I got it! Overall, I find BitTorrent to be my favorite; it does exactly what its supposed to do (upload and download torrents) and none of the other CPU-hoggin' crap! (Version 4.27.2)

LJH This latest version of BitTorrent is -in my opinion- complete rubbish. It's now been given lots of pretty buttons and stuff, which is unnecessary really as you want your Bit Torrent app to just be in the background downloading. The biggest problem for me is that it doesn't appear to work properly; ALL downloads just die out after about 5 minutes. They might start off connected to loads of seeds/peers, but that soon dies off to 0. THE GOOD NEWS: if you go to the website you can still download the OLDER version, which has a nice simple brushed metal interface and actually downloads! CONCLUSION: don't download this version, it doesn't work properly and it looks bad anyway. Just download the older version which still works 100% :-) (Version 4.27.2)

AXIOMUS i tend not to believe the reviews or comments presented here, as most are unintelligible and full of hot air, but i must admit, the official BT client, at least 4.27.2 IS complete rubbish, as another here stated. i suppose the BT developers do not actually use the macintosh BT client they upload for others to use, otherwise this programme would be perfect. free or not free, quit wasting our time by uploading applications that do not function as advertised. and you have the audacity to ask for donations! no way. as a programmer myself, i can 'fix' issues with open sourced products, thereby tayloring the application to suit my needs, however not everyone has this luxury ... BT client 4.4.1 seems to be the most stable i have used, so i keep using it; notwithstanding, i had to do some tweaking. (Version 4.27.2)

JEFF LERCH I agree with below that interface needs some working on. Icons and options are not intuitive, and the icon scheme does not match the brushed metal (which, by the way is on it's way out anyway!!). I see a lot of options in the change log, but am unable to find most of the changes through the interface. Where or how does the encryption support work (you can toy with the options a little in Azereus)? Where is it? Where are some of the other new features you mark as having added? The windows app for this is fairly nice, but that doesn't always translate well to other OS'. I really think the design and implementation needs to be thought out a little bit more, with some extra consideration going towards the differences inherent in the operationg system and those individuals that make up it's user base. ALBABE This is very disappointing. Another example where Macs are ignored by major applications. Why release something with so many bugs, and less features than the previous version? In all fairness, BitTorrent does call this a "beta" version on their d/l page... but this app seems as badly designed and as impotent as Yahoo's new IM app. In regards to Transmission: I've had nothing but trouble with it. I've had files that Transmission said were complete, and then Toast said they weren't audio files. Then I noticed they had no size at all. And Transmission's forum pages were no help. No real "experts" offered any real advise... however I did get a lot of bad advise and tech-knowledge-posturing from a few know-it-alls who were obviously vacant of any real tech knowledge. AUDIOWIZARD The new icon is very nice, but the application's design is somewhat childish. As well, 4.27.1 would not auto-resume torrents that were in progress from 4.4.1. The only option presented was to delete them and start over...not good. This combined with a surge of other bad reviews compelled me to go back to 4.4.1. Plus, 4.27.1 > 4.4.1 just doesn't make sense, unless the meaning is that they've gone back from 4.4.1 and taken a different programming turn from an earlier release. HOMEWORLD 4.27.1 > 4.4.1 makes perfect sense. 27 is a higher number than 4. You appear to assume that once one hits a .9 increment, the next higher digit *must* be increased. This is actually not the practice in most software version management (though Apple has tried to establish it as a precedent). Going from 4.4.1 to 4.27.1 could happen like this: 4.4.1, 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 4.8, 4.9, 4.10, 4.11, 4.12, 4.13, 4.14, 4.15, 4.16, 4.17, 4.18, 4.19, 4.20, 4.21, 4.22, 4.23, 4.24, 4.25, 4.26, 4.27, 4.27.1 (Version 4.27.1)

KT_HATES Sadly, I've also had to stop using BitTorrent. Something went wrong about two versions back and it's never recovered. First it crashed my computer nonstop, then they put out a new version. The crashes stopped but my ul/dl speeds plummeted and have never come back up to normal and I had massive problems finding and retaining peers. For a while I thought it must be my computer or wireless connection, but then I realized the other people I knew with BitTorrent were having the same issues. The other night I tried Azureus for the first time and every issue went away. My speeds went back up, peers returned to normal levels and everything's great. TOKYO SENBEI This review is actually for the latest "stable" version 4.2 on 10.4.3 The word stable is pretty much an oxymoron as it is anything but that. The program constantly throws up a Critical Error: Traceback (most recent call last) which results in stalling any active torrent. The only way to clear this is to quit and restart the program. Quitting the application usually throws up a "An unexpected error has occurred" (error: (9, 'Bad file descriptor')) error message. As some others have mentioned, this mainline version keeps getting worse and worse (especially on OS X) but then again, I guess we get what we pay for. (Version 4.3.5)

SIMONE MANGANELLI KiBs are the correct units for what's usually termed "KBs" on your computer. The same holds for GiBs and GBs. KBs and GBs are based on powers of 10, whereas KiBs and GiBs are based on powers of 2. So a KB is a thousand (10^3) bytes, and a GB is a million (10^6) bytes. In contrast, since computers are naturally binary machines, a KiB is 1024 (2^10) bytes, and a GiB is 1024 KiB, or 2^20 bytes. When you see KB or GB displayed somewhere on your computer, like the space available and space used in get info windows, it actually refers to KiB and GiB. This is partially why when you buy a 250 GB hard drive, it shows up closer to 235 GB on your computer. That discrepancy isn't actually due to the formatting of the hard drive, but is just due to the failure of computers to distinguish KiBs from KBs and GiBs from GBs. (The discrepancy shrinks with smaller hard drives, and increases with larger hard drives -- so on an 80 GB hard drive, you may not notice the difference as much.) (Version 4.1.7)

ANONYMOUS GB, MB and KB are all legitmate terms for binary counting. The problem is that they have TWO meanings — one used in computers, and one used in marketing — which creates confusion. The terms GiB MiB and KiB were created to help end this confusion. They only have ONE meaning. However, that doesn't mean KB, MB and GB have been relinquished to the decimal-counting marketers. Most sources that can be considered authoritative use KB, MB and GB to mean 2^10 (1,024), 2^20 (1,048,576) and 2^30 (1,073,741,824) bytes, respectively. That includes Mac OS, Windows, Linux...pretty much every OS ever made. Look it up: http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=megabyte/ . There are TWO definitions. The binary counting method is also the most common when measuring bandwidth. For example, if your DSL modem says it can download 768 kilobits per second, that means 768*1024=786,432 bits (96KB/KiB) per second, NOT 768*1000=768,000. Confusing, isn't it? The simple rule of thumb is that hard disks are measured in decimal counting, and just about everything else is measured in binary. CDs are measured in binary (a "700MB" CD holds far more than 700 million bytes)....but DVDs are measured in decimal (a "4.7GB" DVD only holds about 4.3GB in "computer" terms). Annoying, but that's the way the marketers have made it. ANYWAY, my point is that using GB, MB and KB to mean the same thing as GiB, MiB and KiB is NOT inaccurate. But using GiB, MiB and KiB instead leaves absolutely no room for misinterpretation. (Version 4.1.8)

NEXUS So far this is the best bit torrent client i've used for the mac os x 10.3.9. What it lacks in features it makes up in stability and low cpu usage. Stay's under 25% on my dual 1.8 g5 while dL'n over 30 gigs at one time. Simple and easy to use. Would be better if it had better queue control and allowed you to select what part of the torrent you want to dL like in bitcomet for pcs. (Version 4.1.2)

ANONYMOUS 4.1.1, 4.1.2 are betas, if they're giving you to much trouble you might want to consider going back the the last "stable" release. At this time it is 4.0.2. You might also want to consider reporting bugs to the author instead of posting them here. Bugs in betas don't get fixed unless the author knows about them. The app has worked great for me, but I haven't run it for really long periods or with many files. (Version 4.1.2)

O I had to switch to this from the godawful bloated Azureus, I couldn't take using that anymore. I like the simplicity of this, and it actually looks like a Mac app, but there is one huge problem with this. Whenever I leave bittorrent running overnight, I come back to find it has almost crippled my system. Not sure what the problem is, but it makes anything unusable until I forcequit bittorrent. I'm on 10.4.1. This is really annoying, I hope it can be fixed soon. (Version 4.1.1)

ANONYMOUS What the hell happened to the interface? Opening torrent files or dragging and dropping them opens them in a "stopped" state - they must be manually run after that. The toolbar meanwhile is completely non-functional when in text-only mode (necessary because the icons are god-awful). If anyone knows where I can get the old 3.x versions of BitTorrent, I'll be VERY happy. Every other client (BitTorrent, Azureus, mldonkey) has seen it's interface go straight to hell in the last few months. All I want is to do is see the three episodes of Battlestar Galactica that my Tivo missed this past month... (Version 4.1.1)

BCWINTERS I've been using Azureus for a while due to its more robust feature set, but I've recently come back to the ordinary BitTorrent client. I like that it's natively coded and not java, and I like the simplicity of the display & UI. It's a solid, Mac-like application and I would certainly recommend it for people starting out with BitTorrent and getting used to the concept. Upsides: it's Cocoa, the interface is easy to understand, the preference pane is tidy & well laid out, the icons aren't half bad (sounds silly, but it shows an attention to detail!). Downsides: uses surprisingly more CPU than Azureus, and I'm worried about the memory leaks other reviewers have mentioned. I'm still on the fence as to whether the simplicity and elegance will win out on this one. Either way, it's nice to know BitTorrent has strong support on the Mac platform. (Version 4.0.2)

UNIVERSE MAN Very good program. I've using BitTorrent for quite a while, off and on with other clients, not having donated. I've recently been doing a whole lot of torrenting and all of it was with 4.0.2. I felt it had earned my money, so I donated $10. Minor complaints: 1) I wish that I could set a per-torrent upload rate cap; 2) I swear I have to clear a completed torrent and restart it in order to seed nonstop. Doesn't make sense to me; 3) I find the whole queueing thing very confusing. And the options for stopping seeding after a certain time or when a certain ratio is reached don't seem to work for me. Having said all that, the program is very fast. (The process to check a file in progress now seems instantaneous, thank God. It was really slow before.) And it is very, very stable. I don't recall it ever crashing. (Version 4.0.2)

ANONYMOUS still using 3.4.2 because of all the problems with 4. one suggestion for the developer: it would be nice to be able to prioritize which tracker recieves the bandwidth. if your ratio is suffering at one site and someone starts to download a file your seeding it would autmatically slow down the other torrents to facilitate/prioritize the tracker that you want to build your ratio up at. ANONYMOUS Why must BitTorrent use the "Metal" theme? Don't we have enough apps using it? Anyway, it's good to know that they're updating the Mac BT client but some new features seem like downgrades to me. For example, sure it's nice to be able to set an overall upload cap but we lose the flexibility to set upload caps for individual torrents. When you have multiple torrents running, sometimes you need some torrents' upload cap to be higher than others. Overall though, it's not bad. I simply can't stand using other BT clients for Mac. K You may already know this but if you use bittornado you can set the speed on dsl cable slow and therefore bring down the upload rate to 10K a second so that it won't ever go up more than that while the download has the sky for a limit, very easy trust me, I got a 10g a month limit to download/upload in my country so I have no choice but to choke the uploads (Version 3.4.2)

LIKE EH, THE DUDE This all looked dandy right down to the point of download, whereupon I was informed a short movie clip could take a day! I am on an ISDN line over a network with plenty of floating bandwidth, so this should not be the case. (yeah ok relax broadband people - I know ISDN is not super-fast, but it shold still not take this long) Each time I tried a download this was the vibe and therefore not as a result of lack of file sharers on the upload side. This has been a sad waste of time. Who is ever going to replace the total of 5hrs 23mins 10secs of my life blown on this useless piece of baloni with more conditions for your download than you could shake a stick at. Goodbye. So i set my Torrent 'uploads' to 25k, kinda like using Carrafix with a KDX or Hotline server, iyswim? ;-) Well, it works.. The problem i have is this app taking up sooooo much cpu speed! ANONYMOUS It is not a problem. All you need is to open the ports on your Mac. But as most firewalls (including Apples own ipfw) use stateful inspection (meaning that any connection that you initiate FROM your Mac TO the internet will be open the other way as well as needed by the software that opened it) , it won't be necessary to do anything. A really useful link if you are using Apple ipfw (and I guess you are not running NetBarrier or other thitd-party FWs) with tons of good information is http://www.novajo.ca/firewall.html (Version 3.4.2)

HOPPER13 I tried BitTorrent and Azureus and Azureus works much much better than Bittorrent. What i don't like about BitTorrent is that you can not set the max upload rate which causes my network to be almost blocked (ADSL 1200 kbs dwn/ 200 up) since it always uploads with rates between 20 and 30 kB/s. Furhermore Azureus is much more configurable and only uses one port where Bittorent likes more open ports. I had very bad downloadrates with Bittorrent (around 7 kB/s compared to 120 kB/s with Azureus with the same files!!!!) Other users report frequent crashes which I can't confirm. Bittorrent runs quite stable on my G5 2x2 GHz with OS 10.3.4 an 1.5 GB RAM. (Version 3.4.2)

JASON DUNN This version features some nice improvements to the user interface from 3.3a. Much better! Also, there are two things I like about this better than Tomato Torrent - 1) It always tells you the number of currently active connections, and 2) You can just drag a torrent file onto the window to launch it. I did notice that it no longer calculates the % of file complettion. Maybe they figure you'll be using an html tracker for that anyway. If you need a ton of options, Tomato has them. I like the simplicity of this app though, and it seems to have less of those "Problem Connecting to Tracker" messages than Tomato too. (Version 3.4.2)

ANONYMOUS Some people really don't seem to understand what BitTorrent is. It is *not* a general P2P app that shares any ol' copyrighted file. Think of it more like a user-supported, volunteer akamai.net kind of solution. It's a way for users to securely dowload something on a server from *each other*. A smart site would use it to put up a big file and not then be crushed under the weight of thousands of direct downloads. Whatever issues you might have with other P2P apps, they do not belong directed at BitTorrent. (Version 3.3)

ANONYMOUS if you're tyring to get something illegal, be warned that the BSA and RIAA log the IP addresses of people using bittorrent to get copyrighted files. that said, speeds can range from really really fast to really really slow. it completely depends on who else out there is sharing/downloading the same file. and if lots of people are downloading and nobody has the full file, that means you'll download what other downloaders have until you just can't download anymore... before the file is complete. BCWINTERS The OS X BitTorrent client doesn't have a lot of "features" per se--you give it a URL, it downloads the file for you. It takes a little getting used to the BitTorrent method for finding files, but once you're settled it works very well. The client is very stable, hasn't crashed on me yet, but I have found it a bit unpredictable if a torrent fails. For example, if there are no seeds available from a URL I enter, I'm sometimes left with an un-trash-able file that I have to get rid of with BatChmod or a similar utility (and sometimes the space isn't reclaimed until after a reboot; although it's possible I could be cleaning this up better with the right utility that I just don't know about). It also doesn't handle a full hard drive very gracefully. Most of the time, though, it works like a charm. (Version 3.1a)

ANONYMOUS BitTorrent - while free and in alpha state - is very usable and stable. There is a robust community supporting the distribution of files and information using the BitTorrent protocol. However, one must take note: with very few exceptions you will not always find what you're looking for, but you will always find something you want. It should also be noted that this is NOT FTP or an FTP client as it is classified here, and as such it is not independent of your actions: each time you download you have an opportunity to help the community out by keeping the file alive after the download has completed. This means leaving the program running, with the download windows open even after the file has completed for as long as possible. THIS IS THE ONLY WAY THE BITTORRENT COMMUNITY WILL THRIVE. Now for the ratings explanation: FEATURES: 2 stars due to a very minimal interface and few options. No built in tracker for files, takes a lot of digging to find goods. EASE OF USE: 3 stars, because it's click-and-forget once you've found something you want. VALUE: 5 stars; what's better than free goodness? STABILITY: 5 stars: BitTorrent has never crashed or caused a crash that I can attribute directly to the usage of BitTorrent in my experiences. Finally: This takes a little smarts to work as it is quite unlike the other P2P programs such as Napster, Gnutella, Kazaa, etc. But not that much more. (Version 3.1a)
