THUS.SPAKE.Z If you've got an Intel Mac with OS 4 or OS 5 the developer's also got a 32 bit RedPill download on his website. Works just fine on my MacBook Pro 2.5 GHz. with OS 10.5.8. It's really cool, too. (Version 1.5)

MACSOLU Although it is mentioned as being ONLY for Snow Leopard, I wonder why the developer did not make the effort to create a Leopard/Snow Leopard dual-compatible release. After all, virtually every other screensaver that has been updated in the past few weeks has managed to be work with both 10.5.x AND 10.6.x. (Version 1.5)

ANONYMOUS A fix seems to be as easy as downloading the source code, and recompiling under Xcode 2.0, to obtain a functional version again. Of course, I can only find the source for 1.4 (via searches here, on VT, the HyperArchive, etc.) - not 1.4.1, which fixes the console spam problem. And, with the author's website currently offline, this leaves us in a bit of quandary... I hope the developer is aware, and will be pursuing a more straightforward fix very soon. This is my one "must-have" screensaver, and don't want to have to give it up after upgrading to Tiger. (Version 1.4.1)

VMS ZEALOT It's a great screensaver - it looks better than any other Matrix screensaver I have ever seen. Unfortunately, it is not currently usable because it is leakier than the Titanic after the Titanic hit the iceberg. I don't know how long before the leaks would cause a crash on my Mac - but such a metric wouldn't be useful anyway because it would vary from one machine to another depending on the amount of available memory that the individual machine has. I hope the author sorts this problem out. He can verify it for himself by logging in from another machine whilst the screensaver is running, and typing top in tcsh to find the pid of the screensaver, and then leaks to view the leak. It seems to be linked to __CF_USER_TEXT_ENCODING. For now though, I'll say 'Nice effort. Keep up the good work - I can't wait until it's finished' VMS Zealot. Normally found ranting on MacSlash. ANONYMOUS I did not get weird blocks, I did see the glyphs. Absolutely beautiful screensaver, but plagued with serious issues. I left my computer on and awake overnight, yet this application somehow ate up 700MB of memory and 100% of resources to the point it took my mac (10.3.2) about 5 minutes to get the password dialog after moving the mouse, and about 3 minutes to show the desktop, I had to run macjanitor to get it to work right, took me an hour to do everything with how slow this caused my mac to get. ANONYMOUS I am comparing this screen saver to xitram. In terms of the ways the code flows in the movie i think that red pill is more like the code in the movie. However red pill only has single columns that flow down like strips coming towards you, but in the movie the strips are closer together and flow more together. In my opinion there is two much space in between the strips of the code. In xitram they go together but the screen is so full with the code at the same time that is makes the sreen way too crowded. I think red pill could improve to be basically perfect if it flowed the same way but the strips were a lot closer together like in xitram, but not as close as the strips were in xitram. FRONTPAGE iBook G3/500 Mhz w/ 10.2.6 1024x768 w/ color @ millions It's a really kewl screen saver created by Mathew. Many people at work like the effect and want copies of it. This and another screen saver called Plasma Tunnel are tops in this category. I noticed someone complaining in an earlier post that the effect isn't like the one in the movie, but I rather enjoy this one. Actually, I'd be a tad smidgen annoyed if Red Pill imitated the movie. It's a neat effect to have the letters scroll from the mist, growing larger on the screen. I played with the effects, trying to see how much CPU it would drag, so I dragged all the prefs to the right EXCEPT for velocity, which I pulled to the left. I started noticing a slowdown as the lettering began crawling down. But I like the way it looks when it comes at you, so if you feel the same, drag only the velocity so the button leans towards fast. Try unchecking the button to allow the effect to start randomly instead of only at the top. Start the test, go grab a drink from the fridge with ice and return to see that the screen is full (but the spoon is not, since there is no spoon). A caveat: The author wouldn't mind a couple bucks. So click for more info if you choose. However, beware about clicking on the box for the spoon while you're online, because when you try testing, a dialog box pops up saying "There is no spoon." After you hit "okay," a web page opens at http://meta.ath0.com/software/redpill/ kindly asking for a couple dollars. Don't keep testing like that or you'll find a bunch of pages which lead by saying, "Prove my mother wrong." That's the only reason he got 4 stars for features, the popup windows bugged me. MATHEW I haven't seen the glEnableClientState error on any machine I've tested it on. If you're getting that error, please e-mail me a summary of what kind of Mac you have, and what sort of graphics card. Also, say in the e-mail if you'd be willing to help track down what's causing the error. My guess is that there's an OpenGL feature I'm using that's not supported on all Macs. (Version 1.2)

ANONYMOUS Yeah- if you open up Console you'll see an immense pile of these "ScreenSaverEngine[711] glEnableClientState: invalid value (1281)" messages, one after another. Has to be a bug. The screensaver itself works much better than the earlier version. (Version 1.2)

WZRDJR CPU vs. GPU? Well, I have an app that tracks my cpu usage and it tops out when this screen saver kicks in. It might tax the GPU _also_, but it certainly is tapping the CPU. Either way, the fan is on constantly with this screen saver running. (Version 1.2)

ANONYMOUS The slight pause may be your error log (open Console.app) filling up with entries like this: 2003-05-16 13:37:56.665 System Preferences[8193] glEnableClientState: invalid value (1281) I don't even want to know how many of those are in that log file now. (Version 1.2)

EUGENE I have to agree with wzrdjr's comments. v1.2 uses more GPU on my 1 GHz TiBook and causes the internal fan to kick on far more often than v1.0. There's even a slight pause every 1-2 seconds. Still, it's a great looking screen effect. And it's now my current default. It would be even better if the GPU usage could be reduced or optimized. (Version 1.2)

META Regarding the "CPU hog" comment, it's not the CPU that's heating up, it's your graphics chip. Nothing I can do about that--3D graphics chips run hot. That's why the ones in tower G4s have their own fans. 1.2 has many more trails, which will hopefully please people. Be aware that picking the most strips won't necessarily result in the screen filling up. A better way to do that is to have fewer strips, but make them drift slower. (Or even set the velocity to zero in 1.2.) As for the complaint about the text being pixilated... dude, have you even seen the movie? (Version 1.2)

CHROMATOSE Not bad. Easy to find a set of parameters that make it slow even on a relatively fast machine. I have to disagree with those who've said it can be made to look similar to the movie. There are never enough trails and it doesn't behave quite the same. (Version 1.0)

RAND Nice screensaver. it runs a little to slowly on a tibook 500 and even when the you pick the most lines, as the reviewer below stated, it still seems too empty. there are some artifacts that happen every so often running horizontally across the screen so they are rather obvious, but they dissapear in short order, so it's all good. keep up the good work! KWEERIOUS i really dig this. thanks for coding it. i appreciate the configurablity. for those of you who want it to look more like the ads, if you tweak the settings you can reach your desired effect (low depth and velocity with many streams). (Version 1.0)

ANONYMOUS The already existing Matrix.saver is much better. "RedPill" even at the fastest settings makes your mac look slow. The trailing characters doesn't look right and the fonts look pixilated. The speed and number of streams is pretty bad too. I recommend you get the Matrix.saver that's been out for a long long time before getting this one. (Version 1.0)

D00D Overall, a very nice Matrix type screensaver. However, I'm not sure I like how the character streams cycle. a character stream should be some fixed length with the tail following the head. The streams also seem to clump and stick around a bit too long. Otherwise, very good. (Version 1.0)
