ICONZ113 I see a lot of "which should I get" questions when it comes to diskwarrior and drive genius. Drive genius is a good application. I have purchased both drive genius and diskwarrior, in my opinion the 2 best. I only wanted to have one of them installed. After getting familiar with them I've decided to install drive genius and not diskwarrior. I did this because Drive genius can perform other tasks that are useful such as cloning drives, defraging, drive slimming, repartitioning, zero out data, perform verification tests, formatting, cloning, and a few other things. I felt I was better off having this installed over diskwarrior which only performs one function basically. However If my drive ever crapped out, I'm reaching for my disk warrior DVD first. So if you ask me which product is better at recovering your harddisk in a jam, my answer is diskwarrior. If you ask me which of the 2 Id rather have installed Im gonna say drive genius for the other things it can do. But when shiz hits the fan, Diskwarrior all the way. I like having the tool set drive genius offers available to me, if my boot drive crapped out having disk warrior installed wouldn't help me anyway, but when theres an emergency I'm reaching for the disk warrior. so if your looking for something that will bring your HD back from the dead get diskwarrior but if your interested in the large toolset drive genius offers then get DG. if you can only have one or the other get diskwarrior. YORUK I have the same disappointing experience. I updated to DiskWarrior 4.2 as instructed. Unfortunately, the disk does not work; you get a blank screen when you start by holding the C key. I have a brand new MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.1). I wrote the DiskWarrior cusotmer service. They say I need an updated boot file because I have a new Mac. The updated boot file can only be obtained on media (no download), which will cost $12.95 plus $8.95 S&H. What an inconvenience and ripoff. I will just use my old DiskWarrior. (Version 4.2)

Obviously you have had a lousy experience and I suspect that nothing said here by anyone will change your mind but for someone who wants nothing to do with Alsoft or DW you seem to be spending a lot of time watching their product. If your hope is that an emotional rant will influence people to side with you against Alsoft I believe you will be disappointed. Alsoft has been using the current updater method for a long time and lots of people have tried to update a previously updated disk unsuccessfully. It has been clear from Alsoft that the original disk must be used to run the updater to produce an updated disk. Perhaps you have been the (un)lucky one that managed to keep updating updated disks without the original disk but somehow I doubt if that is the whole story. To criticize Alsoft for wanting to make money is pretty naive - they are in business to make money. To say they don't care about their customers is narrow minded in my opinion and certainly not my experience with them. (Version 4.2)

IGREG They sent me the procedure using Disk Utility, but it is too confusing to me. So, I will be unable to update to 4.2, unless they fix this updater. I never had problems with their previous updaters, so I do not think it has anything to do with my hardware or system. Based on this problem updater and my inability to update at this time I am going to have to give a bad rating to this version. Previous versions get a top rating, but 4.2 gets a goose-egg. If they fix the updater then I will do another review. (Version 4.2)

E_COMMERCE The updater is awkward to use, it requires an original CD that may or may not be handy, it doesn't accept the CD most of the time, and then fails to burn the CD. It doesn't accept previously updated CD's. It doesn't allow for any way to update the application on the hard drive without updating the CD. Just a couple of the problems I had with updating to 4.2: 1) It does not accept disk images, which are far more convenient, especially if you have a computer without a CD drive handy (MacBook Air, anyone?). 2) It frequently does not recognize original disc regardless. If it fails to recognize it - whether because you tried an updated CD, the drive failed, or other causes - then it won't work at all subsequently. Quitting the program and relaunching it MAY work, or may not. After a dozen attempts, I got it to accept my disc at last. 2) Patching is quick, and an updated disk image is created in /private/tmp. 3) The program frequently (always?) freezes up when it asks for a blank CD to burn on (why can't I just save the image and burn it myself?). The program never starts burning, and furthermore, freezes and stops responding to any input, quit requests from the Dock, etc. Just... frozen. A Force Quit is required. The only step that works reliably is the only one I want - the patching itself. The only way I could get an updated version - of a program that I paid for - is after a dozen or so attempts, copy the image out of /private/tmp and burn it with Disk Utility, which finally worked. I do not understand the rationale for updating the CD being the only way to update, especially for OS compatibility for an OS that is NOT on that CD. Why would I care about 10.6 compatibility when the CD boots 10.5? The only time I'll need 10.6 compatibility is when booted from it - which means the version on my hard drive. If I want to update the CD later, let that be an option, but not the only means of updating. As many posts here have shown, it's a fragile/buggy/broken process. The obvious solution is for Alsoft to stop reinventing the wheel - poorly - and simply install the application like every other vendor does, and verify serial number after the fact. This works for everyone from Apple to Microsoft, and there is no reason for Alsoft to keep subjecting its users to this nightmarish rigamarole. Meanwhile, MacUpdate has deleted a good dozen posts detailing problems with the updater over the last two days (including several of mine) - and Alsoft is a sponsor of the site. MacUpdate Admin, feel free to respond - we know that Alsoft never will. (Version 4.2)

I just read the previous message. Good idea. But here is mine. Finally, I was able to burn a bootable CD! If this can help those who absolutely need to run a CD: After entering name and serial number, the burning process should begin, but there will be this error message window again. Do NOT click the OK button. The virtual DiskWarriorCD(or DVD) disk should be still mounted on the Desktop. I opened a burning program, this time it was a very simple one which name is "Burn. I dragged the temporary virtual CD(for some people it could be DVD) on the main window of Burn and started the burning process. I tested the burned CD at startup (holding the C key very early) and evetything worked fine, but very sluggishly compared to a hard drive output. Ill be glad if this can bring some support to those who are very frustrated with all this updating mess. If not, well, very sorry for you and maybe there will be some positive response from the source. Sleep well! (Version 4.2)

WILE E. After trying and having it fail after entering my info and the SN I tried a Safe Boot with the same result. Eventually what worked for me was to use my old, installed, copy of Disk Warrior to rebuild the Directory of the newly made disk image *before* entering my personal info and the Serial Number. It fixed a number of issues on the image and it then burned perfectly. I have booted my machine with the new CD and will say that this version is noticeably faster to start from the CD and performs the Rebuild faster as well. I did not time it but it was noticeable for me. Except for the significant problem many are having creating an updated disk with this new updater this would rate 5 stars so I decided to rate the Ease of Use low although it almost doesn't fit that category. DANNYMONTANI I have to admit, I was able to create my CD on the second try as well, but it do go without a hitch. My 'best guess' is that for some reason when I typed in my name and serial number on initialization, that the app did not like me copy and pasting my serial number. I've owned DiskWarrior for a long time. I don't five star it because of these kind of issues and there is always room for improvement. BUT is has saved my butt more than a few times. It is stable. Priceless for my photographs. I was not happy that the past version did not recognize a new ATI video card 3870, and they wanted me to buy a replacement CD. (Version 4.2)

WILE E. To blame Alsoft because you threw away your original disk is quite unfair. They have had this policy in place for quite some time and in your own words you have burned updated disks along the way so you obviously should have known to keep the original disk. I don't particularly like the method they provide to update disks and until this update it has always worked perfectly. Obviously it is a way for them to try and rein in piracy and who can fault them for that. I suppose you would have been happier to have Alsoft charge you every time they have to provide a bootable disk when a new OS or updated version is released. (Version 4.2)

JUSTBY Same problem here, that error message about burning the cd or dvd, even after a safe mode boot. There seems to be a flaw with the updater burning script. I also made a copy of the updater on my drive (not the .dmg file, but the updater itself contained in the disk image). At first it seemed to work, writing down to the cd, but at the end, the error message came back and the cd was unusable (had to press down the mouse button at startup to get it out). I tried burning the CD/DVD disk image and three files were missing (there was a message about that before burning with Toast) and the cd is not bootable, but DW is ok on that cd. Here is my workaround, for those who will not need a cd: When the error message window will show up (just after entering name and serial number), DO NOT click on the OK button (because the disk image just created will go away). Leave it there, then go at the Finder level open the CD or DVD disk image then the DW folder (which is in the Applications folder) and copy the content on your drive. I use two hard drives (internal and external), so I can use the program without the cd. It works fine, and seems faster after step 5. The "About info is showing 4.2 and correct name and serial. Hope the company will fix this updater issue soon. (Version 4.2)

BUGSMAN (I ZAP GERMS) Like the overwhelming majority on here, all attempts to create an updated DVD have failed. I have tried several times on both an iMacG5 10.4.11 and a MacMini G4 (Intel) 10.5.8 using a Freecom burner. It's at the burn stage that everything hangs. The G5 has a superdrive but it is misbehaving (reads OK but does not burn) so I am forced to use an external burner, and wonder if this is the issue. As for finding /private/temp and manually burning the new image, where the heck is /private/temp? I can't find any such folder on either OS. Hugely disappointing as this app is fantastic. E_COMMERCE Same boat - my original DiskWarrior 4.1 CD is also rejected as being invalid for the update. Why Alsoft makes us go through this utter nonsense every time is beyond me. Now I guess they'll charge me for sending a new CD since their tools don't work. If I'm booting from the CD, I don't care about Snow Leopard compatibility, so I don't need to update it. If I'm using the copy on my hard disk to repair something, I need that updated - since then I will be booted into Snow Leopard. But there's no way to update the HD copy without first jumping through hoops to update the CD copy! Nevermind that everyone else figured out installer packages years ago - even Microsoft did. You know what? Forget it. Disk Warrior saved the day once, about five years ago, and was indeed indispensable that day. TIMBARNES After a series of problems with my Mac Pro (2008), I was forced to take my machine in to the local Apple store, where they re-installed the operating system. This helped, but did not solve all the problems. I found the machine was running very slowly, and there seemed to be a lot more disk activity than I was aware of. I had previously used the Disk Utility (it saw problems but could not fix them), and TechTool Deluxe (it made changes, but didn't solve the problems), I finally purchased DiskWarrior. DiskWarrior was able to re-build the file system, and since using it my machine has been back to its original high levels of performance. RYANMEDIAINC Diskwarrior 4.1.1. saved the day. I used on a WD 500gb external hard drive and it worked like a charm - sort of. New users (like me) should note that the program needs to be saved into your applications folder, specifically UTILITIES folder (my first try kept giving me an error about changing permissions) but it was not necessary after getting it in the right folder. Also newbies should know, when I did the first rebuild it came back with an error that it could not complete - I ran it again and it worked fine. So while it has some learning curves, it did in the end do what it said it would do. I gave it a 4 out of 5 only because it required me to spend some extra time GOOGLING the problems I was having installing the program. Now I can get back to work.... thank you DISKWARRIOR (Version 4.1.1)

DRDUL I have come to regard DiskWarrior as an essential app. Sure it's pricey and there's no demo, but in my experience, the $100 cost has paid for itself many times over. I use DW every month or so to keep my Macs fit and trim. Most importantly, I always use DW before a OS upgrade, and every upgrade has been problem-free. I used to run DW from the CD, but soon realized that it was much faster to run it from an external drive cloned with SuperDuper! Doing so also avoids the need to buy a newer version of the CD from Alsoft when you buy a new Mac. (Version 4.1.1)

Only by running DiskWarrior on the Powerbook in Target Disk mode could the volume be repaired with no data loss. JHT69 I was having some real troubles with a new iMac that I just recently purchased. I'm fairly certain that it was corrupted files that transferred when I uploaded my files from a MacBook Pro that I use as well. DiskWarrior got me up and running in no time. It's very straight forward with a couple clicks of the mouse. I'm only giving this app 4 stars since the version I bought v.4.1.1 would not boot up from the disk that I purchased. A bit of hunting on their site indicated that I needed revision 901 (for the latest generation of iMacs. The version I just purchased from the local Apple store was version 810. A solution seemed within grasp as a friend recommended downloading the latest version (via CD update); but quickly eroded when the version I bought rejected the upgrade process. I searched for the coveted version 901 and came up with a giant goose egg in their search engine. It's a wonderful piece of software to have on hand should things start going wrong. However, they need to get their act together on the whole version thing. Don't tell me you have a tech update for my specific machine and then make it damn near impossible to find. COLUMBINE I'm so thankful for this application. DiskWarrior was the only tool that was able to repair my external 500 GB hd completely. Every single file of more than 30.000 has been rescued! An electrical power outage happened while I was copying files to the external hd, and after that the hd was gone. No other tool (OS X's disc tool, TechTool Pro - which I bought first, Drive Genius etc.) worked or worked well, but DiskWarrior rescued everything, absolutely all files were restored with the right names (not just obscure numbered files like other tools). I've compared the repaired hd with my CDFinder catalogue and nothing is lost. They are right: DiskWarrior repairs disks no other utility program can repair! Great app, great work, - thank you! SIGIL It's overpriced and overrated. DW has a horrible upgrade system. I bought DW earlier this year. It was quite troublesome to upgrade/create a new Disk. It did finally work. However, I purchased a new iMac last month and neither my original disk or new bootable disk works on it. I was told that I have to purchase a new disk. This seems unfair and feels like a con... You buy something that initially works or seems like a great deal and later you have to make payments for it to work. In January, I'll be buying a new Macbook Pro. So, will I need to buy a new disk then too? I agonized over the decision to buy Disk Warrior or TechTool Deluxe or Drive Genius 2... It's obvious I failed...I rather gave that 100.00 bucks to either of the other two competitors. If anyone want's to buy my Disk Warrior 4 make me an offer. (Version 4.1.1)

RICKDUDE DiskWarrior's web site is uninformative, and I was left under the impression that I was going to have to pay full upgrade price to go from my version 4 CD to the version 4 DVD to start up my new-ish Intel Mac (NOT the newest ones launched in October 2008; I bought in September 2008). I was getting ready to say goodbye to DiskWarrior, after using it for a number of years. But I emailed their Customer Service just to make sure, and in their (very prompt) reply they said that, although the web site (even the ordering system) says the upgrade price is $49.95, once they have confirmed that you're an owner of version 4, they lower the price to $12.95 plus shipping. It's a pity they don't make this more obvious. Alsoft does seem to be at odds with the times but it seems clear they're not the gougers some of us had suspected. I've no way of knowing whether this is true, but perhaps they're a small company spending all their time working on the software, raising their heads only when an email comes in from a customer, or something along those lines. In any case, as the owner of a few Macs, it's my experience that it's always best to have the latest version of DW at hand. Note that 4.1.1 does seem to be pretty fast, too. (Version 4.1.1)

RICKDUDE An update on my earlier comment: I went ahead and ordered the upgrade on November 19th. It was shipped on December 2nd, and arrived here in Japan about two weeks after that; that's about a month from order to receipt. People not in the US might want to get the upgrade now rather than wait until they actually need it! The price (upgrading from a Version 4 CD) was $12.95 plus $8.95 s&h, as Alsoft had promised. It's now on DVD and way faster than before. Apparently it works with all Macs except those introduced in October 2008. (Version 4.1.1)

HERMIE Use your preferred burner instead. Here's the HowTo from MacFixIt (ask Alsoft and you'll get pretty much the same answer). I burned the image in Toast... 1. If the Update utility appears to have successfully updated the image, but simply refuses to burn a new CD, do not quit the Update utility yet. First choose Go -> Go to Folder... in the Finder. Type /private/tmp and click the Go button. This will take you to the /private/tmp folder. 2. There should be a disk image file (ending in .dmg) in that folder. Copy or move it to your Desktop. (After doing this, it's safe to quit the Update utility.) 3. Launch Disk Utility (/Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility). 4. In Disk Utility, choose Images -> Burn..., choose the disk image file you just copied to the Desktop, and click Open. 5. Burn the image to disc. (Version 4.1.1)

LEOOFBORG Mini Review. As you'll see from my comment below, I find DW to be useful.. on external hard disks. I find Time Machine [and/or Superduper] and Applejack to be *much more useful* for disk fixing and backup recovery. You don't back up? In this day and age? You rely on vendors with slow update cycles? [Not just Alsoft..] Sucks to be you. That aside, I was also able to update my DW 4.1 CD to 4.11, with the following bug-- DW's 'CD Update App' recognizes, but then does not use the Disk Burner that you specify. It will even READ from the burner just fine! However, during the 'burn phase' it will just sit and sit and sit. Even tho you have chosen the supported DVD external burner, and it has read! Basically the updater will wait for the *internal* or first burner in the chain. Stupid. If your *internal* burner works you have to insert a CD *there*. So, Alsoft, thanks for the useless popdown menu, burner selection *does not work* correctly. Three stars for DW still being somewhat useful in this 'era of OSX' that Alsoft hasn't quite caught up to, -1 for releasing this slightly buggy updater as well as the byzantine process. Aside to German and overseas users:: I feel your pain. When I lived in Germany we just learned to do without, that is, back up and find other, cheaper, and sometimes better tools. (Version 4.1.1)

LEOOFBORG Leopard [with Time Machine] basically makes Diskwarrior obsolete. And I'll tell you why, as a DW user since OS9 days. It's two words: If you've been using Time Machine for a few weeks, and your disk becomes unusable, then you boot with your Leopard CD, and run the Time Machine application: * It asks you for the Time Machine disk you've been using, * It erases your boot disk, * It restores EVERYTHING as it was. The way DW used to 'save my bacon' in OS9, Applejack and Time Machine have been just as useful in OS X. As other users have said, Alsoft has not changed with the times and now, like Allume/Alladin and Stuffit, they've been left behind. When was the last time I made a *.sit file? About the last time I booted the DW CD.... Basically after last year's MacWorld I discarded Disk Warrior as a serious tool due to their spotty support. I mean, it took them *this long* after the release to come up with a CD upgrader? That now doesn't work with Macs from *one year ago*? Please. I *do* use it to check removeable disks, but as a primary disk tool? Nah. That's what diskutil is for. And recovering files? That's what Time Machine / Super Duper / Carbon Copy Cloner are for. I will be VERY SURPRISED if there is a DW 5. (Version 4.1.1)

G4JAY I bet this version still cannot rebuild a 500GB hard drive that is used for a Time Machine backup. Disk Warrior has a limitation... if you have a lot of files on a big drive, it does not have enough RAM to rebuild that volume. I have 8GB RAM. Tech Support told me there is nothing they can do unless they re-write Disk Warrior to be able to use more RAM. Ludicrous if you ask me! (Version 4.1.1)

KOSOVAR1 Caveat Emptor! Disk Warrior is a software utility that actually works--but for a very limited period of time. I bought Diskwarrior a couple of versions back and have been forced to upgrade twice. Why? By their own design, Alsoft does NOT usually update their software for new Macs or OS upgrades. I was only able to use it once or twice before it became unusable because of a minor OSX 10.4 revision and the same thing happened when I switched MacBook Pros, and yet again when I upgraded to OSX 10.5. If you buy this utility, you may find that, within a very short time, you will not be able to use it anymore and you will be forced, again and again, to spend $50 or so to make it work again. To me, this seems like a sort of mafia tactic--you pay and pay and pay. I for one, quit! I refuse to deal with overly greedy software companies. Besides, there's DRIVE GENIUS that also works very well and is more than a one-trick pony. Alsoft could very well do better by their customers, but they choose not to because there's more profit in their current market plan and instead they choose to blame Apple for it's timely OS upgrades. BEBDABHRHBRWEFG 3R§5Y5H4WTEDSFB i'm a bit puzzled by this. the update will allow you to rebuild directories as before. however, since the discwarrior bootCD is still running 10,4,9, it is not possible to repair permissions on a leopard system, as discwarrrior complains that the installed OS is too new. this removes one important area of discwarrior's functionality [especially given how flaky apple's disc utility is when it comes to repairing permissions!] i was hoping that the discwarrior 4,1 update would provide some mechanism whereby i could create a new bootCD running leopard, so i would have access to *all* the features. this seems like a job 'half done' (Version 4.1)

JIMW First of all, if you purchased the software recently, either at MacWorld, or from other vendors, check your master disk. If it reads "CD Rev 42" on it, you do not need this upgrade as you already have it. Now regarding Alsoft and rating software: Alsoft has been around for quite a long time, and over the years I have found them to be a mixed bag. While historically much of their products I regard as somewhat flakey, Disk Warrior so far seems solid enough that it seemed to be the product of choice for disk repair while I was contracting at Apple last year. That is what enticed me to try to upgrade to the current version at MacWorld this year. Despite the fact that the last version I had was ancient (pre OSX) they offered me the upgrade price and were nice and pleasant to talk to. I have had no problems with the upgrade so far on Leopard. When I saw the upgrade, I found its presentation a little confusing, so I downloaded the update and tried to install it. It failed. So I called Alsoft TS, but could only leave a message. They promised a call back within 2hrs. I got one within 30min. The agent was somewhat curt but helpful and quickly resolved the issue for me - I did not need the upgrade. I suggested they clarify that on their website. He entertained the suggestion. So, somewhat surprisingly, given Alsoft's, mixed history, currently I would have to give them high marks at this time for this product and support. As far as rating software based on the company as opposed to strictly the software, I most go back a long time ago to an acquaintance that told me the following: "The only thing worse than not having a piece of equipment that you need is having it not work properly, and not being able to get it fixed." The same can be paraphrased for software. It is useless to have a piece of software that you can't get to work properly, and be unable to get good support for it. So in my opinion, how a company provides support for a product is part of the software package you buying. It is a poor business practice for a company not to include support costs into the total cost of a product they are producing. So I subscribe to the notion that when you rate a software package, support should be included but not be the single determining factor. Instead it should be considered as one part of the total package. (Version 4.1)

RAMPANCY I don't understand why people are complaining so hard - Alsoft said we'd get a CD updater to 4.1 for registered users, and we got one. Were people expecting a free MacBook Air to go with it too, or what? And furthermore, if you're going to give an app a 1-star rating, do it on the merit of the app itself, not the company selling it. You're rating DiskWarrior, not Alsoft. (Version 4.1)

RAMPANCY The only caveats you would have had in running DW4 with 10.5 is that you shouldn't have run it when booted in 10.5, or that you should only run it when booted from a 10.4 volume (which is a a moot point since you can typically only repair your boot disk by starting up from the CD anyway), and that you wouldn't be able to use DW4 on FileVaults created from within Leopard. If you have a lot of data locked up in FileVault then I can understand your anxiety, but it's not like upgrading to 10.5 made DW4 useless to you. http://www.applelinks.com/index.php/more/diskwarrior_4_and_leopard_proceed_but_with_caution_os_x_odyssey_900/ (Version 4.1)

JOHN SAWYER CJS Actually, the only real conflict between Diskwarrior 4.0 and Leopard, besides its not being able to rebuild directories on an OS 10.5 FileVault or an OS 10.5 disk image file (there were some other minor issues that didn't damage data), is that since DW 4.0 uses OS 10.4's permissions repair routine, instead of OS 10.5's routine, running DW 4.0's permissions repair option will damage permissions on an OS 10.5 startup volume (and possibly non-startup volumes that have been exposed to OS 10.5, but I'm just speculating about that), and this damage can occur regardless of what you're started up from while you're running DW 4.0--OS 10.4, 10.5, or even the DW 4.0 startup CD. (Version 4.1)

E_COMMERCE Agreed with other reviews. This will fix things nothing else can. And sadly it is the case, because the company is arrogant and provides NO support. JOHN SAWYER CJS I'm not sure what you mean by "install Diskwarrior". Diskwarrior is a standalone application, not requiring an installer. Normally, it's recommended that you run it while the Mac under repair is booted from the Diskwarrior CD, so in that situation, there is positively nothing Diskwarrior-related that gets installed. If you drag a copy of the Diskwarrior application to a hard drive, you haven't really "installed" Diskwarrior--you've just copied its single icon to the hard drive--and as far as I know, running it from a hard drive, doesn't install anything further onto that hard drive either. JMH1 Dang, DW3 just fixed a problem that no other I want to upgrade from 3.03 to 4.1 but I've got mixed feelings...I would also like to run a Quicktime version greater than 7.0x After installing QT 7.4 I was revisted with the "unexpectedly quit" crashing bugin DW. It just does not feel right to have such a critical program crashing (regardless of the assurances that there is not problem). And it just does not feel right to pay a 60 dollar upgrade cost for a broken app. (Version 4.1)

SNOOKS Great product. Worst customer service ever. they have somehow managed to lose two of my registrations that were previously used to upgrade. Poof they are now gone. Alsoft thinks nothing of not telling people their product will not work with the latest version and make the wait months and pay though the nose for a "upgrade' to a product that should have worked when you bought the software. This is a god way to encourage people to get your software without paying for it. (Version 4.1)

MACUPDATE ADMIN Strictly speaking personally, apart from my duties and responsibilities here at MacUpdate, I could not agree more. I was a die-hard fan of DiskWarrior, and last year at MacWorld their personnel treated me so poorly when I went to their booth to find out about upgrade options I decided I did not need their software. Their regal posture ("We've got the real deal, we're the best, if you don't like it, take a hike") is slow and certain poison for their future prospects. I've since come to rely on freewares such as AppleJack. I am certainly aware that DiskWarrior is a superior product which does what no other software can. But I do not need it anymore, all my Macs (three: G3 iBook, MBPro C2D, and a brand-new iMac) are kept quite healthy without using DiskWarrior. And I recall a software named DiskExpress (for Classic Mac OS ) that I bought years ago from Alsoft and it was quickly obsolesced by an Apple system upgrade not six months after I purchased DiskExpress. Alsoft promised an update and NEVER delivered. Last I checked, they still had a page on their site claiming an update is in the works. Had I the time and money and inclination, I'd file suit against them on that premise. They richly deserve a strong slap. (Version 4.1)

I have, in hand, my original DiskWarrior 1.0 disc that I purchased at MacWorld in 1999. So we're pushing close to TEN YEARS of arrogant disregard for the customer. Since the company is still in existence, and still selling product, perhaps this is a lesson about why you shouldn't waste your time on quality or customer satisfaction. :( My most memorable (I can't really call it a "favorite") bit of arrogance was a tech "support" person who adamantly insisted, throughout multiple email exchanges, that the problem I was experiencing could *not* be caused by DiskWarrior. He resolutely REFUSED to escalate my problem to a programmer. The problem was (remember the old days, now) when the volume selected to rebuild was a (removable) Syquest disc, the disc EJECTED from the drive, and then DiskWarrior complained about not being able to find the disk!! In my mind, the problem clearly was a *mistake* on the part of the programmer(s) and a "dismount and eject" command, rather than simply a "dismount" command had been issued. Of course I was just guessing, but the Tech Idiot (who of course didn't know either) refused to pass my experience on to someone who *would* have known. And guess, what? In the next version of DiskWarrior, this problem Went Away! Oh! And yeah: I, also, am still waiting to see a version of DiskExpress that works with the current Mac OS version. Promised for literally years and years. Never delivered. Lies, all lies. (Version 4.1)

KONG After a couple of updates to Apple's OS X DW stopped working. I think some kind of revision 39 was downloadable but it refused to accept my original (!) CD from AlSoft as not being updateable! Now for about a year and a half I have not been able to start up from the CD to check on my Mac. Okay, I can do this FireWire/target thing, but I don't always have another Mac or a bootable drive at hand when sh*t hits the fan. So I'm stuck out there, knowing I legally own the most versatile and blah blah disk repair software I paid a good amount of money for and it just refuses to help me. I'm sure this will happen again in a couple of months with Leopard. And DW 4.x that I should have to pay another whopping 50$ for just the upgrade. Incredible in my opinion! Should I then buy ANOTHER (more recent version of DW), a version that I actually already own???? They could at least offer registered customers to send them a cheap updated CD version of the software they already own. THAT I would call support. (Version 4.1)

TATA I recently had a problem with my MB. It simply continued to restart... never allowing me to login. On the advise of Disk Genius support I ran repair 10x then rebuild 10x. Each resulted in a FAILED message back along with a number of errors. I was able to login to my MB though. Disk Genius tech support replied. Could you tell us more about what happen to the drive? Drive Genius has great success in repairing Drives, but like any other utility there may be some situations that severely damaged drive may not be corrected. If repair or rebuild did not work, we would suggest to use Data Rescue II and recover your data then use Drive Genius to reinitialize your drive. I'm happy to report that even though DG did not have success in my case Disk Warrior did. I ran it once and it found & repaired alot of errors. Thank you Disk Warrior. (Version 4.0)

CENOCRE Best product - jaw droppingly stupid company policies - the very worst. It is beyond belief that a company that makes such an utterly essential product can be the very WORST in the way they treat their existing customers. I have been a customer for over a dozen years yet have never been notified of an upgrade. They would have doubled their money from me and my clients had they just told us of the new products in a timely manner. Then, when you desperately need it in the middle of the night and find out that your current version doesn't work right, Alsoft makes you wait weeks!!!!!!! I use Kensington as an example of nearly perfect customer service and Alsoft as the worst. (Version 4.0)

GORDON142 The reason Alsoft is always slow to update is that they do it right. People use DiskWarrior because it is the most reliable and effective when it comes to repairing your disk. If you want this level of reliability, you have to be patient while they do extensive testing to ensure that any new version works as well as previous versions. You can either have frequent updates, or you can have *good* updates. (Version 4.0)

GRYPHONENT Disk Warrior is great... but keep your fingers crossed that it works properly. DW4 has some quirky bugs that remain unfixed. As to when they will be fixed? Well, the developer didn't even bother - for almost 18 months! - fixing DW3 and leaving it to the Mac community to come up with a solution (you had to rename a sound file in DW3 if I remember correctly). Then DW4 came out... and with it a new problem. I get often error 2163 whereas a duplicate disk cannot be put away. This happens when the "replace" button in the report is not clickable, leaving only the option to press "cancel." Great product, truly bad support. (Version 4.0)

FRANKLIN M Ever since I received my 2.0 MBP early in 2006, I was uncomfortable that i did not have a version of DW that would work on Intel Macs. About every month or so, I ran Apple's Disk Utility and corrected minor issues. When I received DW 4.0 in late December, I booted the CD, which took about 5 minutes, which did take longer than in DW 3.0.3. However, the program ran faster than 3.0.3. It found critical volume information errors, which were eliminated when it rebuilt the directory. Now my MBP runs faster than before the directory replacement. Now, I sleep better knowing that my one "must have" Mac utility is here and working well to keep my MPB in good order. (Version 4.0)

MACSPECTRUM in the past, OS9 and maybe pre TTP 4.5, I would have said use DW vs. TTP, but Alsoft has been very arrogant with their very, very late release of DW4 for Intel. TTP 4.5 for Intel came out quite a while ago. Also, the lack of download to upgrade to DW 4 for registered users is a pain in the A$$. I had a problem and used TTP 4.5.2 to fix some very serious overlapped files and extents issues, thst I used to think only DW could handle. I don't know if I will be spending the $60 U.S. w/ delivery to get a product that does only a fraction of what TTP 4.5.2 does. Like I said I found Alsoft very arrogant about their UB re-write and had been asking them for many months about it with the stanadard reply of "real soon now" - what really pissed me off is that if you purchase the FULL DW4 you can download it, but NOT the upgrade for registered users - translation -> if you're a customer - they don't care. Sorry, but I'm very pi$$sed. (Version 4.0)

MACUPDATE ADMIN I met with the Alsoft folks at MWSF, and I could not be more displeased with the experience. To say they were 'stiff' is to be kind. I have owned DiskWarrior since day one and have relied on it solely... yes, it is a one-trick pony, pretty much, but it does that one trick very well. TechTool does things I have absolutely no need for, and I have never liked MicroMat for various reasons going back some years now. I don't know whether I will upgrade or not. I sure did not like those people at all, nor did they give me the impression that I was important to them as a customer. (Version 4.0)

DAVIDFOSTER65 Works much faster; I was astounded what short work it made of very large, complex disks. Either it is coded much more efficiently or it makes good use of multiple processors (maybe both). I've run this on half-a dozen disks and have encountered no problems. Seems to have improved performance of my 17" MacBook Pro which appeared to have some critical volume info issues. Upgrade ($59) seems pricey, but software shipped from this company is invariably rock solid (until the System changes anyway). For what this does (often miracle work) that's exactly what you need. Backup regularly and run this on your disks once a month and you will likely avoid 'disk distress.' (Version 4.0)

8OO8 The cost for DiskWarrior is NOT $50 for an upgrade or $100 for first time buyers, but $59 and $109 respectively. You must order a CD and pay a $9 shipping and handling fee(yeah, $9 for putting a CD in an envelope and mailing it! Gimme a break!). There's no way to avoid the $9 s/h fee. So why not just state the cost for DiskWarrior as being $59/$109, with shipping/ handling included? Or even "just" $50/$100, s/h included....it's expensive enough at those prices! Rather deceptive, those folks at Alsoft, no? And greedy, too!

JORGEHP Still the best utility! Much faster than before. The only problem is that the cd takes A LOT to load (5 minutes aproximately). It's worth it though. And when I restarted Mac OS X loaded noticiably more quickly. Permission utility requires that the app is installed and run in your hard drive (makes sense). File & Folder is reasonably fast considering it checks ALL .plist, files, and folders in the disk selected (it detected a corrupt file in my laptop from an app I didn't need anymore). Thorough and fast. Excellent! Tested flawlessly with MacBook Pro Duo 2.0 Ghz & iMac G5 1.8 Ghz (Version 4.0)

JAMESKITTY why would ever have APE and DW on the same system anyway? DW is useless on the boot volume, so you're pretty much running it from the CD/DVD or making a bootable tools drive to run it from. SYZZYGY Diskwarrior is a very good utility; does that mean that it's, then, worth whatever the developers want to charge for it? Well, that's for the folks who might want to purchase it to determine. Clearly, some think that its worth the current price and some don't. If you don't think its worth what's being charged for it, then don't buy it. I purchased Diskwarrior some years ago and went for the last upgrade. But I'm not going for this upgrade because I do think that $50 is too steep. It, apparently, has got a few more bells and whistles, and is faster than previous versions. But the previous version is fast enough for me, and it does what I originally purchased it for. So, I'm sticking with that version. Oh, and $9 shipping and handling fees to put an upgrade CD in an envelope and send it via US mail? Gimme a break!!! Maybe, if it were sent by a personal courier service, but NOT via US postal service. Jeez!! I am NOT a sucker. (Version 4.0)

At $50 (plus $9 shipping) I'll try to forget about DW and reinstall from backups if I crash. Some of the new features added are available from other utilities (e.g. AppleJack). PIXELJUNKEY No, you're an idiot because you don't have a valid reason to claim the software is a ripoff. Normally this requires the following conditions: A) The product doesn't do what it says it does B) The product's price is not in line with what it does Diskwarrior is a well known product in Mac maintenance circles and for most people A) Does exactly what it claims to do B) Doesn't cost much compared to other programs like TechTool, and no more than its direct competition (Drive Genius - $99), which doesn't work as well for many people to begin with. Understand now? Instead of claiming the developers are "greedy" and on the way out, because the problem is you (i.e. you're cheap and unwilling to pay for a decent product), maybe you should either state the program's shortcomings for the money, or simply say nothing. ROADTRIPDK I just purchased the latest version to solve problems with a fragmented directory (catalog b-tree) after a crash that Fink Commander was involved in. My problem is that I run DiskWarrior for a couple of days (to try to solve the issuie above). DiskWarrior reports from the very beginning that it is taking a performance hit because of the condition of the HD, which is understandable, but Finder starts reporting that DiskWarrior is unresponsive and the whole OS (Tiger) seems to be taking a hit on my G5 single. Ejecting USB pen drives are no longer registered by the system, quiting any other apps that have been running leaves me unable to get DiskWarrior back to DW, which seems to take on the persona of the last app that has been quit, etc. I am running DW from a system installed on a Firewire drive. So I repaired the supposed problems, but then came up with a real problem...the computer wouldn't boot any longer! Apple's Disk Utility reported an invalid B-node tree, and it couldn't repair it. So I splurged and bought DiskWarrior, hoping that I could recover the data and not have to spend a day wiping the hard drive and reinstalling all of the software. On my initial try, DiskWarrior reported that the disk was too damaged to repair. However, after contacting Alsoft's support, they walked me through an alternate procedure to recover my data, and everything appears to be in place. After this experiment, I decided to experiment on my 2nd generation iPod which is no longer seen by iTunes or the Finder (it was OK until I installed the January 2006 iPod update). DiskWarrior did its stuff, repaired the iPod, and now the iPod appears again in the Finder and iTunes, and I'm listening to songs off of my iPod again! While TechTool might be useful in trying to find problems with RAM, it has messed up two computers by claiming to have found problems with the file system, when it only created problems. DiskWarrior has already fixed two problems for me in just one day. (Version 3.0.3)

ANONYMOUS Wow - since when did Alsoft add a CD updater? In other words, a utility to create updated CD-Rs for you to boot from? This has always been one of my biggest complaints about DiskWarrior, and now that they've figured out a simple, elegant way to update I can't recommend it enough. (Version 3.0.3)

ANONYMOUS Not that I have gotten it to work yet...... Ok maybe that is the whole point. Not happy with the software at all. Intall instructions are poor. Follow on documentation is no better. and oh ya...it still doesn't work. I don't think I would do buisness with this firm again (the all sales final approach to customer service). Heck even McAfee you can unstall the software, sign that you aren't using it/have installed it and send it back. It doesn't work still (Version 3.0.3)

This is the single BEST disk utility software available for OS X. I've used it since its first release and on dozens of Macs. Never a problem of any kind. You really are lost. Sell your computer. NT This program made my PowerBook fast again! Honestly, I hadn't used this since my hard disk died a year ago, and lately my system had started running slowly, and always seemed like it was taking forever to swap things in and out of memory. Last night I booted from the DiskWarrior CD and let it go... and this morning the machine feels like a brand new machine. iPhoto used to take a couple minutes to load and now it is only 20 seconds.

ANONYMOUS Disk Warrior 3.0.3 seems to have disrupted the workings of a Japanese font and Sherlock. After I first used Disk Warrior 3.0.3 I noticed that the flight channel on Sherlock came up in Japanese. I also started losing channels and other channel discriptors began showing up in Japanese. I didn't suspect DW had anything to do with it, however. I did a complete reformat and reinstall. Afterward, everything worked fine -- all the problems, including my problems with Sherlock were gone. Don't ask me why, but I ran DW3.0.3 on my newly formatted and installed drive. It found minor directory and folder errors. The folder errors were on folders named with Japanese characters. I told DW to replace the directory. The replacement went fine. When I returned to Sherlock, flight was back in Japanese and I began to lose channels. Something is up. I ran the fontbook utility and it identified the Japanese font as problematic. I deleted the font and that cured the "flight" problem. Sherlock still is unstable and loses channels. (Version 3.0.3)

ANONYMOUS Here's a tip for the developers... Make an app that actually works. Tip #2: Don't make people pay for an app that will tell them their drive is beyond repair. I got this error trying to repair my PowerBook's drive. I'm glad I got my copy from P2P. Their "no refund" policy is absolutely absurd, especially for an app that 1) doesn't work and 2) won't fix anything. (Version 3.0.3)

ANONYMOUS You are surely missing the whole point. DiskWarrior will fix things that Apple DiskUtil could not possibly fix. For example, DiskWarrior will bring an HD back from massive directory damage. It has saved me and my clients many times when nothing else could. I do not recommend owning a Mac without owning DiskWarrior. It is the one and only absolutely necessary third-party HD utility. NO, I do not work for nor have any association with the manufacturers of DiskWarrior other than I have owned their product since it was first released some years ago. (Version 3.0.3)

L66 Indeed, don't be fooled by its simplicity. It is even able to recover data from a physically damaged disk for example. This application with its very simple single check can do more as Norton Disk Doctor, it fixes a lot of problems Disk Utility doesn't even detect. I couldn't access (let alone boot from) my OS X drive anymore for example. Disk Utility reports the disk is fine. DiskWarrior checked it, found and fixed problems in the catalog file and everything worked again, OS X even booted like normal. Please look more thouroughly at an app before reviewing it, although I agree that its simplicity is rather deceiving ;-). (Version 3.0.3)

SATISFIED For the record, on 4 different iBooks running OS X 10.3.9, DiskWarrior 3.0.3 works without any problems whatsoever. I've used DiskWarrior since it was introduced. It and a couple of freeware util's are all that I have ever needed to maintain perfectly functioning iBooks. Oh, and just because I feel like saying so, I've not been bitten in the slightest by an Apple OS X update, be it a Security Update or what-have-you, since maybe 10.1.5 (if I recall correctly). Perhaps DiskWarrior is one reason why I can say this. OS X user since Day One, Mac user since 1978. (Version 3.0.3)

RUSTY LITTLE OF ALSOFT Our current CD boots every G5 available and every G5 that has ever been available. I am typing this message on a G5 that is the primary development computer for DiskWarrior. With one simple toll free phone call you could have a CD that boots your G5. I can't help but shake my head in total wonder when I have spent the last 5 years of my life, as others around Alsoft have too, working very hard to create a good and useful product just to have someone call it a piece of s*** for reasons that make no sense. ANONYMOUS Rusty, most people are very aware that DiskWarrior is (and has been for some time) the best. Very easy to use, very reliable, very Mac-like. It's just that some people could *ahem* mess up a wet dream, you know what I mean? (Version 3.0.3)
| May 12 2005 |
RUSTY LITTLE OF ALSOFT As the Read Me and the web site both clearly state, when you run the DiskWarrior 3.0.3 Updater you will burn a new CD with the DiskWarrior application updated to 3.0.3. Everything else about the updated CD is exactly the same as your original CD. That is, you still have the same /System version that you had before. If you purchase new hardware and you have an older DiskWarrior CD, it may be that your older CD will not start your new hardware and you will need a new CD from Alsoft with the latest /System version. There is no updater for that. The /System installation on the CD is licensed from Apple and is shipped "as is". The software license with Apple doesn't permit us to distribute Mac OS X via an updater. Even if Alsoft were allowed to do so, the download would be hundreds of megabytes in size. Alsoft did not receive a licensed /System from Apple that supported Blue Tooth keyboards and mice until after Apple had begun shipping Blue Tooth devices. If you have Blue Tooth devices and your older DiskWarrior CD does not support them you will need to acquire a new CD from Alsoft. I hope this clarifies some issues mentioned here. Alsoft, Inc. ANONYMOUS F.Y.I. to all those who had been and are experiencing problems with DiskWarrior 3.0.2 & the new 3.0.3... I have read others providing the following information and now from speaking with Alsoft, I know it to be true. There are two (2) versions of DiskWarrior 3.0.2 a "G4" and a "G5". If you made your 3.0.2 DiskWarrior upgrade copy from your original factory disc 3.0 or 3.0.1, niether of these earlier versions have the "G5" capability therefore you are making copies that will only work on G4 Mac models or earlier. Apparently, Alsoft released/issued the "G5" version late last Fall of 2004. In order to upgrade and make a successful copy of the new version 3.0.3 that will WORK on a G5, you must have the original 3.0.2 "G5" version. Otherwise for registered owners of non-G5 DiskWarrior versions, Alsoft will sell you the new 3.0.3 upgrade full disc which comes "G5" ready for $20.00 US. (Version 3.0.3)

MARTINK Actually, I feel with you. My conclusion from 15 years of computing: Sometimes things are supposed to work and just won't in a specific circumstance. It's a waste of time and energy then trying to find out who's the culprit doing it all wrong. Instead, here's an alternative: Stop insisting to start from a CD. It's anyway soo slow, and no PowerBook user should be without at least one external Firewire backup drive, not only for backup but also as a quick startup alternative just in case. So install OS-X + DiskWarrior on a FW drive, and run DiskWarriror from there instead of from CD. I have supported a number of machines this way since many years (before FW I simply used SCSI drives), and it always worked for me with the full range of repair software and thru many of their various versions. One more: If you look for a repair software that you could rely on in trouble situations when you don't have your FW drive with you, consider installing AppleJack. (Version 3.0.3)

ANONYMOUS I'm getting kernal panics from this CD update. WTF! Tried two blank CDs with same results. (Version 3.0.3)
| May 12 2005 |
MARTINK Just for clearification: The fact that Alsoft 'forces' users to burn a new CD to update their software does not prevent operating the new version afterwards from any hard drive, internal or Firewire. When you re-insert the freshly backed CD, you copy the DW 303 to any drive you want and it will work from there just fine. In fact, this is also explained in detail in the readme on the 303 cd, and I have already tested it here. On the kernel panics when trying to burn the 303 CD: Same probs when trying under a "clean" testing account? All the best! (Version 3.0.3)
