JORIS VINCKEN  FileChute is one of those set & forget apps.

It is always in my dock and when sending larger files I just drag them to FileChute and double click the generated link. Mail opens a new message and that's it.

MobileMe accounts are installed automatic, other ftp servers are really easy.

Defiantly worth the investment.

RIOAPS  I've been using FileChute since it first hit the net. It works near seamlessly in its connection to iDisk and MobileMe. It is a convenient extension of the iDick tools. I use it constantly. I also love the way that it allows me to set up other MobileMe accounts, so that I can simply upload or download common data shared between projects and co-workers.

I highly recommend the software and the company. Check out there other wares. You will not be let down.

LYLEG  If you would like to store things on a server and make them easily available to others, pay the trivial registration fee and get and use FileChute.

"Things" could be photos you want to use in a post to a forum, or a 6 MB file you want to give to a colleague but which is too big to attach to an email.

You just drag your file to FileChute, and it uploads it and hands you a URL to use for it. The process is so easy, so fun, you will find yourself using photos more often in your posts just so you can use FileChute. It is poetry in motion. It is so easy, that to an old-timer like me, it is startling.

But the best way to see how wonderful FileChute is, is to download it and try it out.

STEVEN GOODHEART  I got FileChute when I bought the great Yellow Bug Bundle:

* FileChute for sending large files

* EasyBatchPhoto for batch image processing

* EasyCrop and EasyFrame for quickly making email or web-ready photos

* FolderBrander to help make folders easily identifiable

* And Pro upgrades to our freeware apps: SnapNDrag, SizzlingKeys, YemuZip and TapDex

I can honestly say this is the most bang-for-buck I've ever gotten for a mere $39.95 -- I've paid that much for a single program and not gotten nearly the value of this collection of great programs.

I got The Bundle mainly because of the great photo image tools, but what a pleasant surprise FileChute was! I couldn't believe how slick and easy it was to "send" files to friends without attachment headaches and file-size worries. With a few clicks I was set up with my MobileMe account and "sending" friends 100-plus megabyte files with nary a problem -- all with a simple link in an e-mail!

This program is well-worth it's modest price, and for a little more than double the money, you can get a great suite of tools if you're interested in Yellow Mug Bundle. And no, I have no relationship to Yellow Mug, other than being a very, very happy registered user of some of the best software I own.

SCOTT.GARDNER  Confirmed Snow Leopard compatible.

This is a must have app. In the same way that one would go "paperless," this is the natural progression of going "attachment-less." Not only does it save on disk space and conserve bandwidth, but you also have complete control over how long a recipient of your FileChute files has access to be able to download it, and you can make edits to that file and re-upload (overwrite) the existing one, so the recipient can use the same download link. Hugely useful for sending quotes, contracts, etc.

The accompanying iPhone app increases the usefulness of this solution.

I'd like to see these features added:

1. The preference to automatically copy the URL (long or short) to the clipboard upon successful upload.

2. The ability to password-protect a PDF without having to send it as an archive. I realize that this would require manipulating the file itself, but I think this would be technically possible since it can be done easily in Preview.

DHK  I've just been using FileChute for several days. Previously I had used a web based service Yousendit.com, and then "graduated" to the file sharing of MobileMe. Filechute surpasses these because the file is in your control. At the yousendit site it was only around for a few days. At MobileMe it is given an arcane filename you have to send to recipients. Also, since it wasn't MY email that was sending the letter I was never quite sure whether the recipient got it. With filechute using my own email system I have more control over the message, as it remains in my sent folder.

That said the program is ridiculously simple to use. Drag a file to the "chute" on the app panel, and it asks whether you want to send the file straight, or zipped. I had already used the publishers zip program YemuZip to zip up files before I uploaded them to the web, so this just cuts out that step. I then get a web link from FileChute. I double click on the link, and I'm put into Mail, writing an email that already contains the link to the file.

There's even an iPhone app so you can see what's still on your Filechute folder.

Good product. Get it.

SCOTT KOUE  First a short qualifier, I have only used this for a few days and I bought it on a MacUpdate discount. I have Transmit and it's pretty easy to make droplets that do almost everything Drop Chute does so I was a bit skeptical about how much I needed Drop Chute. Well actually I don't "need" it. Transmit's droplets do the transfer and it's not a big deal to archive an item before you post it, and it doesn't usually take too much work to figure out the path to the file. But I have forgotten to zip a folder and that is a bit of a pain, and you have to create a droplet for each place you want to FTP stuff to (with Transmit) and sometimes it is difficult to figure out convoluted paths to files. It's not a big deal but Drop Chute is a simpler solution. And a lot of people are a bit stymied by FTP so something like Transmit may not be something they have. I found having one place to drop files and be able to send them anywhere AND having the compression as a built in function was a very convenient work flow. I still use Transmit and I will probably also set up droplets from time to time but for most situations Drop Chute is a better choice and that's what I will be using. The app has been solid for the short time I've used it and the price was very good. Would I still buy it at twice the price? Maybe, if I did not have Transmit's droplets the answer would be absolutely.

If you don't have a droplet FTP app this is a Great app to have, if you need to deal with .MAC this is a great app to have. But even if you have Transmit (or some other FTP client that can create droplets) Drop Chute is a good app to have.

* note on file paths. Drop Chute attempts to create the path from what you enter setting up the account but with my site this didn't work because the folder I was sending things to was not in my domain. So it's not so much that Drop Chute magically finds the path but that the path can be set for the account and from then on it will generate correct paths to files. This is very convenient. I used to keep a bunch of text snippets around with the paths, and then add the file name.

It's absolutely the simplest way of getting files up on the net which you can then give links to.

It's a simple thing really, couldn't be easier. It means for us a lot of saved time and bandwidth. We have a long list of files which other people need access to and if they need it, I send a link.

LARCENOUS  Works as advertised - very quick and efficient; a simple and elegant solution to a persistent problem of how to send large files.

If I had one suggestion/complaint (which is the only thing that keeps FileChute from 5 stars in my book) it would be to allow the option of digest authentication for WebDAV servers. I don't have a MobileMe account, but I DO control my own webserver, and it took me quite a while to figure out that was the problem - my DAV file had been previously set up for digest authentication, not basic authentication. Call me paranoid, but I've always shied away from basic auth, as it sends passwords in cleartext; digest sends it encrypted.

Offer digest as an option, it's a 5-star app.

LYLEG  So I look at my mailserver's queue, and see that one of my clients is trying to email, as an attachment, a file that is 248 MB in size. That's a quarter gig. What is he thinking? It has been uploaded, as my server lets my clients get away with murder. But the destination server is having none of it.

So, I walk down to his office (fortunately in the same building as my datacenter) and he says it's just a scanned document he's sending to his payroll company.

Now, I could have gotten into the whole world of resolution, pixel depth, image editing, and software he doesn't have, but instead had him copy the file to a thumb drive, from which I then dropped the file onto FileChute on my PowerBook.

Filechute gave me the URL to where it was putting the file it was uploading, and I emailed that to my client. I told him to paste that into an email to his payroll company.

"That's it?!", he asked, incredulous. He could not believe he wasn't going to have to FedEx a paper copy or send the file in 100 pieces or do anything even more painful.

Words like "That's it?!" have to be music to a developer's ears.

I extolled the virtues of the Mac and FileChute while the file uploaded, then unplugged the PowerBook and went on my way.

My client may purchase a Mac just so he can run FileChute. It is that good.

PHILBRIDGES  I've had a problem recently after my ISP locked me out unless I reset my password to something far more secure... so I set a really went it for and included the £ sign (it's similar to a $ but far stronger!) .

For some reason Filechute didn't like the changed password so (tongue-in-cheek) I logged a call with the author to see if he could offer any clues. Bear in mind the program only costs just $15, I kind of thought I was pushing my luck but..

Within a few hours Jay (the author) came back to me, asked for a bit more info and.. afew hours later... hey presto updated Filechute to accommodate my very draconian password scheme!!

I'm an IT Manager and hey, I've bought software for the office costing anything for 10 -100 times what Filechute costs yet the support those companies gave me didn't even touch the sides compared to Filechute.

As Amber McArthur and Don McAllister have pointed out in the past, Jay is one of the good guys for sure, he clearly doesn't do it for the money, he does it c'os he believe he wants to contribute to the Mac community, and I for one am very grateful, THANK YOU Jay!

WHITBYBOB  I have been using the trial version of File Chute and it has met every claim the developer states on its web site. Seamless, fast, intuitive. Generally very easy to use. Realistically, I installed the program, "file chuted" a folder with four files and successfully e-mailed the link in under 10 minutes. I BCC'd myself on the link and when I clicked on it in my e-mail the download started immediately.

Have used it almost daily since. I don't bother sending attachments any longer. I have approx 10 PDFs I send out between 50 to 100 times per week. I simply file chuted them all and now I just send the link. Really amazing software. VERY reasonably priced.

SCOTT KOUE  This is a utility not a fashion accessory! I wouldn't call it ugly and it certainly does look Mac (have you been on a PC lately, looks like they haven't changed the look since Win 3.0). It is not cluttered with cryptic buttons or a lot of eye candy but that is what I want in a utility. The bottom line is does it work. The answer is YES and very well. I will take substance over style any day of the week, however I didn't feel I made a compromise in style.

BEAMY  FileChute is a great program.

I replaced the included "tar" and "zip" programs (which are in the "Resources" folder" of FileChute) with intel versions. They were PPC before and now I have the impression, that FileChute is doing its job faster on my intel Mac.

I am looking for an intel or UB of "curl" which works with FileChute (the included "curl" in the "Resources" folder is PPC). I already tried to replace the "curl" with the UB version 7.16.3, but that did not work with FileChute.

Where can I find an intel or UB of "curl" which works with FileChute ?

TODD SMITH  I have used FileChute for the past year or two and have been very happy with its simplicity. In a few seconds I can start uploading a large file and send the download link to a client. As a photographer, I use this function a lot. Many people don't know how to use FTP, and this provides a very simple alternative.

The program has been very stable in both Tiger and Leopard. I don't think it has ever crashed on me.

If you use a .Mac account, it is a no-brainer to set-up. If you use FTP, it only takes a bit longer.

Highest recommendations for a product that does what it says really well.

The integrated link shortener makes sure, the download-link will work for your recipient.

Mind you, both the icon an the app could use a bit of cosmetic makeover. But this is my only complaint.

AUTODIDACT  I'm a big fan of FileChute...so big that I paid for it!

I frequently use this program to send friends music and documents...and I use it for sending colleagues professional information. In the case of the latter, FileChute is helpful since I can zip a bundle of documents and post a stable url so that I don't have to spend time attaching files to emails...just paste the url.

For the cost of this program, it is definitely a GOOD investment.

DNOBEL  FileChute falls under the category of utilities that once used, I wonder how I ever got along without. For those with a .mac account, this is a simple, seamless way of electronically disseminating files too large to email. In the two years or so I have been using it, I have never had any usability issues with it, so I can't comment on the developer's customer service.

Easy to set up, easy to use, with a clean, Mac-like interface--and as we expect from the best Mac products, it just works. Indispensable.

SPLUNK23  Although a heavy computer user I am minimalist when it comes to add-on apps and I have to be really impressed to even install.

The ease of use and seamless integration into .mac (or any other online storage) makes this a must have. FileChute is among the first apps I install on a new system. It makes file sharing with others almost effortless, not only for me but the person receiving the life as well.

With FileChute you will never again hesitate to share large files and will never again have to email anything large. (No ones likes getting big files via email). The fact that the app even allows you to auto delete old files that you have uploaded is just icing on the cake.

Well done guys, well done.

SPLIG  I have used FileChute since an early version and it is ideal for sending files to other people with no effort.

Yes, you can achieve this manually without buying FileChute, but this little app makes it all so easy that it is worth it for me. The best part is that for the person at the other end, they just click a URI and get the file they need. I never need to help them figure it out and that makes it well worth the small fee.

Easy to set up. I use this multiple times daily without a single need to provide support to the recipient. My low-tech PC-using office staff can even go to my Mac and easily send me file all zipped up and uploaded to our server, and the link emailed to me, without even understanding what they are doing!

SWEETBLUE  For those of you with a .Mac account, take it from me, I never felt like I was quite getting my money out of it until I bought FileChute. Now I upload stuff all the time and imbed the hyperlinks in an email; all the recipient has to do is single click and the file "automagically" starts downloading onto their desktop. Nice.

Also, now that I have an iPhone, after I upload an important, huge file (or series of files), I imbed the link FileChute gives me into a bare, draft email, save it in my "Drafts" folder (IMAP, not POP), then call it up whenever I'm on the go and need to send to someone right away. Double nice.

My one wish, and the reason I can't rate it at a full 5-stars (I'd give it 4.5 if I could), is that one could pause uploads and return to finish them later; would be particularly useful to those of us who use laptops as a primary computer. Hopefully this is in the cards for a future version. Until then, it's still a beauty. Highly recommended.

YACKADEMAC  While there are a number of free applications that perform the same or similar functions (Pando, for example), and there are people with their own servers who won't need this, for people who have a .Mac account and want the simple, useful functionality Apple forgot to include, this is a must-have app!

The interface is Mac-like, easy-to-use, reliable, and a huge time-saver. Like all great Mac apps, my only worry is for the developer: I'm sure Apple will integrate this feature to the beleaguered and over-priced .Mac subscription service soon so that customers see value for money. I only hope that Apple pays licensing for "adapting" the idea from Yellow Mug when they do include it.

If you have .Mac, you need this application!

ERICHD  FileChute has made my life so much easier.

I'm frequently needing to send groups of files to my clients and coworkers, and FileChute's drag-and-drop auto-archive feature makes this task super-easy. THe program even tracks what I've uploaded withit, for easy recall and tracking (some of my files are indeed time-sensitive and others are not).

I really like that I can upload once, with a time-limit, and then forget about it -- FileChute ensures the files don't just sit there, taking up space on my account.

If only it held a log of what file shad been compressed into what archives, and had automater options or a service-menu/contextual-menu implementation.

GEVANTRY  For the home user who has signed on for a ,Mac account, this is a very useful app, especially because it is not time limited. You can place large files on your iDisk and leave them there indefinitely, unlike with a variety of other services that limit your files to only a week's occupancy--reasonable, to be sure, but not always convenient.

However, Filechute is rather slow and large files can take quite a lot of time to transfer via broadband. Transfers via modem could seem interminable unless they are rather small.

I suppose I like this app because its the first of its kind I was ever able to get set up and working without any problems. It is extremely easy to use if you are a .Mac account holder.

AIKOUSHA  Not very useful unless you have to do this all the time, AND you have one of the services required.

It's easier to use one of the dozen or so file host services, and I guarantee that their servers are FASTER and less likely to stop working due to a dozen or so .mac "features" or "limitations."

What somebody needs to do is make something that does fast file transfers (point-to-point) from Mac/PC to Mac/PC that doesn't require an expensive service or any silly servers inbetween to store the stupid file first. Otherwise, you might as well just get an inexpensive website (unless you're transferring something like porn which is banned on almost all sites-hosts).

That said, there are free apps that do the same thing as this does, so if you do require this form of transferring...

SWEETBLUE  Re: El-Cravito's review/comment -- Pando does NOT do the "same thing" as this app -- it does similar things, but the beauty of FileChute is drag and drop simplicity for posting huge files to one's .Mac account. GRUMPYTICO  Two fatal flaws:

-At the beginning it checks something online, which if network is a bit buys can take up to 10 seconds in doing so :S Sometimes it has completely hung up on me when doing this

-NO RESUME! I have tried twice in the last hour to upload a file and transfer has failed. The app should present an option to immediately try and continue the upload where it left off, but instead fails and you have to start all over again.

I have no problems uploading and resuming with Transmit to the same server, so it is not my server.

Until these two flaws are fixed (especially the second one), it's way easier to upload the file and send the link manually.

DOUG88008  Great Program.

I had two clients that needed to send large files to others. After some research, I set them both up with FileChute

Basically this program uploads a file or folder of files to your .mac site, Earthlink site or web site, and you send an email with a link to a recipient. FileChute makes it easy.

With .Mac and Earthlink users, setting up FileChute is automatic when you enter your account details.

To send a file (or folder of files), you drag it to the program icon on the dock (or the chute in the program window) and FileChute uploads the file or folder.

A window appears showing the link to the file. Double click that and your email program starts up with the link embedded in an email. Send the email to the recipient and they can then view or download the file.

You can send the files as-is or you can send them as compressed zip files in which case they download as soon as you click on the link in the email message.

If necessary, you can add a password to the file or change the upload folder to control access.

To buy the full version, choose "Registration" from the Filechute menu.

To set up Filechute to use a web site (instead of .mac), turn off "Help me fill in..." and use the same settings that are used to upload web pages to your web site. These are the setting for my web site:

Upload URL: ftp://ftp.yoursite.com/public_html/filechute

Download URL: http://www.yoursite.com/filechute

You can have multiple accounts and settings so you could use a different folder for each recipient.

Instructions on setting it up to use a web site could be improved. However using the ftp setting for your web site handles that.

I really like the simplicity of using this program. Also upgrades are free. And you know where your files are. (They aren't sitting on someone else's server somewhere.) That gives you more control over who sees them and when.

You can use FileChute to delete the files from your site. I recommend leaving the files there until you know the person got them. Recently, I deleted some files after a week and then it turned out that the person hadn't gotten to them yet and the links didn't work any more.

Effortless, painless, and it's really quick. For those of us that are concerned with productivity and not wasting time, this program is wonderful. To have a programmer do all that, and offer it in an attractive, elegant, very stable product is what the marketplace is all about. If you'd like to do this stuff yourself, great. JEFE  This is a very cool little application. I'm always uploading stuff to my iDisk and then trying to figure out exactly how to link to it, and then typing the URL in my email. This progarm automatically uploads the file, and copies the URL to the clipboard for you so you can paste it right in the email. It will also automatically delete the file from your iDisk at a specified time. Very simple, very useful, very cool.

My only complaint is the $10 price tag. For something that I can easily do manually, i would expect something more in the $5 range. I haven't decided if I will register it or not at that price. But it is neat. It requires .Mac or some other WebDAV server..

I would like to see FTP added as a protocol for uploading to servers.
