AV I cant open iSale, HitList, Process or iCal and in Safari i cant open youtube.... so whats gone wrong? Probably a few others things glitching in the background that have yet to fully surface. All this after doing a user cache clean with the standard checkboxes marked - 100% fault of OYNX. Im going to Apple Genuis bar tomorrow and i will see what they say - hopefully they can fix it without a complete reinstall. If not then a complete reinstall is my only option. Please, check and repair it, it's VERY important! You speak of Windoze application
;-) Your first reaction: reinstall the system then you're probably a switcher. . Please, forget your bad reflexes of Windows user. The first reflexe is check the disk!! You have a Apple computer! ;-) (Version 2.1.1)

AV Everything was fine until i used the user cache cleaner function and its caused me a major headache. The OSX was perfect and now i dont know how many issues will come up going forward. After forcing quitting it it restarts after 10 mins etc. and when i start iCal itself it comes up with a message saying "iCal upgrading calendars" and never goes beyond that - crashes. AV It might be an isolated incident but it doesnt negate the fact that it messed up MY system. I have nothing geeky or niche about my setup - just a regular home user. ST00P!D M0NK3Y You don't have to re-install the entire system. You can just re-install iCal. Backup your iCal data and either re-intall it, or try deleting the preferences file. Reformatting should be a last resort. (Version 2.1.1)

FOOBAR1969 As an unabashed computer geek, I love OnyX's vast feature set. If OS X has a preference that can be set, or a maintenance that can be run, most likely OnyX includes it. OnyX is probably not a good choice for non-geeks because it offers too many options, some of which allow you to wreck yourself unexpectedly if you don't understand what you're clicking. BTW, long-time users will be happy to know that v2.1 is now a drag-n-drop install, rather than having to do the whole click click click accept click click authenticate click wait wait click routine. JAZZICA John, you might consider uninstalling the app, getting rid of the preferences file in your user/library/preferences folder, com.titanium.OnyX.plist, and then reinstalling. I really can't reproduce the stall you mention; nor can two of my friends who use Onyx. Snow Leopard works differently than Leopard, and, if anything, the launch and execution of scripts should be faster than ever. Respectfully, J (Version 2.1)

JOHN MALIS I like Onyx but it indeed has his flaws. I also experience some lag when launching the app. It freezes for about 20 seconds before it is actually usable. Tried a previous version and this does not have this issue. (Running on MacBook Pro OSX10.6.1) Still like this for some quick tweaks. Although I also like iTweax. It is almost the same as Onyx but with a thinner/sleeker UI. Recommended nevertheless. (Version 2.1)

JAZZICA No 20 second lag here, John, unless you run the script to verify startup volume. In Preferences, under the Advanced Tab, you"ll find "Verify the structure of start-up volume at launch". You have 3 options: Ask, Automatically Verify, and Don't Verify. Joel makes it very clear in the help files that all apps will freeze, and you might see a beach-ball, but just to WAIT, because it's over in about ... 20 seconds. So just go in to preferences and pick Don't Verify. (Version 2.1)
| Nov 7 2009 |
SLIGHTLYCONFUZED Yeah, make sure you uncheck those options in the preferences, or at the very least, press cancel on the first two options that pop up when you first open Onyx. (Version 2.1)
| Nov 7 2009 |
JOHN MALIS It happens when you cancel on both questions. Then it freezes for some seconds. Happens on my Macbook Pro, iMac and friend iMac. Disabling both doesn't help either. On next startup it again locks for some seconds. There is for sure something wrong because previous versions does not have this issue. (Version 2.1)
| Nov 8 2009 |
SLIGHTLYCONFUZED Then this is an issue separate from Onyx that is occurring with your computer, as Onyx starts instantly without any lag or strange freezing on several of the computers I have Snow Leopard installed on. And if it's only a "few seconds", that's not too bad. =P (Version 2.1)
| Nov 8 2009 |
SLIGHTLYCONFUZED By the way, did you upgrade to Snow Leopard or did you do a clean install? (Version 2.1)
| Nov 8 2009 |
JOHN MALIS Blaming it on my setup is easy. This issue is also confirmed by two other friends who both have a iMac with OSX10.6.1 installed. The strange thing is it sometimes is a short freeze and sometimes a 'long' time (read: more then 15 seconds). Is seems to be random. BTW I did a clean install on my Macbook Pro and iMac. Never got any issues whatsoever. Including previous version of Onyx. (Version 2.1)
| Nov 8 2009 |
JPWGIBSON No issues whatsoever on my MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac. Still also running problem free on my PowerBook G4. (Version 2.1)

SCRIVENS Are you sure the hang isn't just OSX waking and connecting an internal or external drive that's gone to sleep? Does it here with any app and it only started with Snow Leopard, even with 'Put Drives to Sleep' turned off. Very annoying and has been the same through all versions of 10.6 - did a complete fresh install of OSX and every app the other day and it still does it so it appears to be something in the system itself. (Version 2.1.1)
| Nov 4 2009 |
JAZZICA Perfect, as far as I can tell. Joel removed the "are you sure you want to shut down Onyx" pop-up as it was redundant. That was the only thing out of place, and it is now gone. Fixed. Every script seems to run seamlessly, and I find that Repair Permissions is as reliable as Disk Utility. The weekly tasks scream by (probably a function of 10.6 Snow Leopard) and the other maintenance and rebuilding scripts run without error. The cleaning tasks all seem safe to use. There were no hangs on any task, period. My Mac (2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 6 GB 1066 MHz DDR3) runs faster after every session with Onyx. This is a mature app. Some may not like that it weighs in at 50 MB, mainly from .lproj language files, or that it has a GUI function to make a "metal" window transparent. With stability like this, these kinds of criticisms become meaningless. What Joel Barriere has done is singular and a testament to his commitment to perfection: he's given us way over a hundred betas, fixed many bugs, learned a new language, learned about every path and every script while Apple threw him curves galore, and came out the other side victorious. This is an app (ok, a really user-friendly wrapper) that has grown over years and years because a developer believed in his vision and created what to me is the finest maintenance/cleaning tool for Mac OS X. If he charges for the newer versions, I will pay. If not, I will donate. If he feels that the challenge alone is enough, this reflects on his altruistic and giving spirit. I will use Onyx with the knowledge that it is one of those rare creations by a man of rare intelligence and creativity, who wanted to give us something more. He has. Five stars in not enough. JASONFANDORA Always used Onyx until OSX 10.6 was launched. Several issue pops up every other time. I had high hopes for this version but nevertheless, it still has issues. First, it locked up on startup. It is running (and doing nothing) for about 1-2 minutes before it actually reacted on my actions. Anyway, some tweaks still not work with 0SX10.6. It also lacks some new known tweaks already available for OSX10.6. Therefore I keep using iTweax2. It has all the new tweaks for OSX10.6 and works a bit better for me in general. It restart much quickest. 4 stars for easy of use because I would prefer the installer detect I install previous version of Onyx in Utility folder. ALEXANDER It does not work correct with 10.6 10A432 GM. Cleaning the system caches makes OSX10.6 slow to boot and it never gets the same as before. After the OS10.6 install it took about 25seconds to boot. After I cleaned up the caches with Onyx it is +60 seconds. After many boot thereafter it is still longer then normal - a bout 45seconds. I know, Onyx is not released for OSX10.6 but someone here mentioned it works with 10.6 but it has some serious issues. So do not use it for cleaning. Tweaks seems to work ok. (Version 2.0.5)

JAZZICA Absolutely perfect. No bugs or hangs on my G5 2.66 Mhz Quad-core Intel Xeon. There are probably only a few utility developers who will successfully tackle Snow Leopard. I have a feeling that Joel will be among the few. Excellent app, which I have used for many many years with only a few bugs. I think there have been at least a hundred iterations of this app. This version runs bug-free on my machine. Bravo. (Version 2.0.5)

JAZZICA TSARKON- it's what you said. It's still a G-5, right? It's the new Mac Pro which I just bought last month. Also, should I worry about permission repair before the Snow Leopard install? It seems everyone has a different take on that. I have quite a few "bad" permissions but no ACL's out of place and my machine runs great (knock knock)
| Aug 24 2009 |
TSARKON No, it's not a PowerPC G5 setup. If you mean generation 5 of the Apple pro desktop machines, that would be something else. But it's absolutely not a G5 processor at all. It's an Intel Xeon processor. No, you should not have to bother with repairing permissions. I don't think that will be necessary. Even though I can't say for sure to 100 %. (Version 2.0.5)

TENJINANDOU I have used Onyx for years without any fear. With Leopard, the 10.4 version was obviously discarded -- although I still use it regularly to keep my 10.4.11 Macs in good shape. However, 2.0.5b2 (beta) finished its work and simply stopped. I finally gave up and forced restart. The result was 10.5.7 with a faulty finder, nothing showing on the desktop including HD, and the inability to do anything. Luckily, starting in Target mode with my laptop allowed me to re-install the combo upgrade and get it going again. Now I am afraid to try Onyx again, especially, of course, any beta versions. JACOBUS77 I have used Onyx with Jaguar, Panther and Tiger. (Haven't seen a burning need to get Leopard.) I have found it to be well-planned and highly valuable. I believe the majority here value it too. Those who find fault with it, I swear would find fault with someone handing them a silver dollar. It works great and it's free. Esthetics: I LIKE the brushed-metal-with-Aqua-accents. Maybe because I like OSX and its Aqua interface? Interface: Straightforward and useable, IMHO. There are improvements that could be made, as there are to any software. And nothing the writer does can possibly please everybody. Functionality: Gives excellent command over more of the system than any other utility I can think of. I've found the defaults to be quite safe on all the Macs I've tested it on. I did have a merry dance fixing one after I checked one too many boxes, but that was my fault, not Onyx. Permissions repair seems better booting from the system DVD, but Onyx does almost every OSX-Unix maintenance routine you can do from a hard drive session. And that is a lot. (Version 2.0.5b2)

If we think of all the times his app has saved us from trouble, we might be inclined to send a few dollars via paypal to support his efforts. He really is something special ... I've used all iterations of Onyx over a period of many years, and only a few times did a "hiccup" occur - never a disaster. Keeping up with every path change and OS update, plus doing it all in a tongue not native to him... that's moxie, and that's real talent. A 5-star app from a 10-star developer. Word up, Joel! FORMICA I was just writing a MacUpdate.com review of iTweax, and since it's so much like OnyX, my review couldn't help but compare them. So, I surfed over to VersionTracker to see how many versions of OnyX there have been since its inception, and would you believe there's been at least 102 since June 2003? Now that's dedication to your craft ! I kind of like iTweax because it does many of the same things that OnyX does, but in a much lighter-weight program. But even though iTweax is just at the beginning of its development, there have already been some serious issues that made me thank my lucky stars for Joel and OnyX. Nevertheless, I'm sure iTweax will improve over time (remember how long it took Joel to get the English translations right?). However, I could never abandon such a skillfully designed and long-tested old warhorse as OnyX (which has taken such good care of my Macs over the years) for some slim, nubile and flashy young startup like iTweax. Come to think of it, I guess I feel pretty much the same way about my wife. Anyway, Kudos to Joel Barriere for working so long and hard to make the best app in its class, and then continuing to give it away for free (unlike C()cktail, Yasu, Leopard Cache Cleaner, etc., etc.) !! EXORZIST iTweax is - as I remember - a RealBasic Application and not lightweight, it's over 7 MB. That's because RealBasic has to include all the libraries and stuff to translate the basic-code (which is written in plain text) to a executable code (which needs all the libraries)... it's like a bad joke to develop such a tool with RealBasic, but I didn't find it funny. I also don't like Onyx because I never needed a tool to change anything involved with the OS. No need to remove cache- or trash log-files. I don't care anymore about all the junk, because the system cleans itself and my hard-disk has a lot of space. Why should I bother? Please don't try to remove stuff just because you want more disk-space or you want the feeling that your computer is "cleaner". Buy a new HD instead and ignore the junk. Forget the old times, today, bytes are cheap but time is running. If something really goes wrong, Onyx and Co. won't help you. And: sometimes it's going wrong because of Onyx & Co. So, what do you want? Play with nonsense or work with your computer? Both is fun, by the way. (Version 2.0.5b2)

MACGURL Excellent upgrade. All tasks are smooth as silk. I think they need you at Apple, Joel, considering their last few "updates". It's amazing to see a free app from a devoted developer, still keeping up with the coding idiosyncracies of a mega-corporation that seems rudderless at the moment. Seeing as how they just broke "repair permissions" with their last iTunes/Front Row update and are now faced with releasing a NEW update to update their last update, and taking note of the fact that many recent updates have created new bugs not previously in existence, talent like yours is sorely needed in Cupertino. You have my respect and my thanks. (Version 2.0.4)

JOHN SAWYER CJS Regarding the OnyX developer's use of an installer, instead of just distributing OnyX as an application: I emailed him about this in June 2007, and he replied: "OnyX is translated in 18 languages. 18 Read-me files + 18 License files...!! With the installer, you have just one file and these files are automatically displayed in the language of the user. Also, the user is obliged (theoretically) to read the license and that, it's very important!!" Apparently the system language-specific files he refers to, get installed into the OnyX application itself, since they're not to be found anywhere else on the drive it gets installed onto. His reasoning is reasonable, but I still think it would be fine to distribute OnyX as an application containing all the language files, even though that would make it somewhat larger, since the extra size wouldn't be a real problem. More inconvenience is caused, in my opinion, by having to install the app, then drag or copy it out of the Applications folder and into a folder of one's choice, if that's what one wants to do, and I suspect many of us do, as others posting here say--it would be better to be able to just drag it out of the mounted disk image it's distributed on, and skip the installer step. But Joel is the developer, and this is a minor inconvenience compared to the value of OnyX. (Version 2.0.2)

KKNOPP Not true. Onyx wont let me install it in ANY PLACE other than my main Application folder. This is very annoying. And yes he could give out a application that has all the translations in it like most every other application maker. If you want to get rid of some localizations you can easily and safely remove them yourself by getting info on the application. Regardless of what the dev says, an installer is NOT NEEDED. He just PREFERS it that way. The thing is, his customers do not. And that is who he should be attempting to make happy. (Version 2.0.3)

When will that be? That's for us to know and you to find out." (Version 2.0.2)

RANSKY Be careful - I downloaded and installed Onyx on my Macbook and afterwards my hard drive would not mount (computer could not execute startup). When I ran the program, the initialization routines said the hard disk needed repairs, and to use the Leopard install disk disk utility program. The utility program said the drive had an invalid node structure (or something along those lines). Up to this point, my hard drive and computer had been working fine. ST00P!D M0NK3Y Just giving this program 5 stars so to show my appreciation for such a wonderful application. This computer has helped solved issues with my computer(s) on many occasions. Thank you to the develop for making such a wonderful application free to the public. Keep up the amazing work. And don't forget about Snow Leopard when it comes out. =P The only thing I think would make this app better is if it had a few more tweaking options for various OS X settings. I have really enjoyed the ability to change the default screen capture tool from PNG to JPG. That has saved me some time. But overall, this is a 5 star app ... and who could argue with the price? :) (Version 1.9.6)

ANDY HEWITT This is a classic sign of operations in other applications being run while doing "optimisation". This problem of losing the login accounts screen is actually a known bug on OSX, and happens in Software Update too. MACGURL One small bug pour moi: when deleting the sound file caches - the plug-ins for iTunes I think - my app Sound Studio stops functioning afterwards. I think it has something to do with a special plug-in that Freeverse Software throws in there. Minor stuff. Not everyone has Sound Studio. Back to Onyx. This app rocks. Get ready for Snow Leopard, Joel. Don't get a drinking problem over this. Put a few dollars charge on this baby. WIZARD2 G4 Powerbook 10.5.2 also had the same Applescript timeout error posted by another user (-1712). Shutdown and reboot sequence also required over 20 minutes -- which seems excessive during which the menu bar disappeared and the computer was unresponsive. Although Onyx has always been a useful tool for me -- I would hold back until these and possibly other issues, are resolved completely. A maintenance utility should never cause this level of uncertainty and angst during it's use. (Version 1.9.4)

What version of Mac OS X are you using, Tiger or Leopard? Onyx continues to be rock solid for me with no bugs or errors. The thing I noticed and liked the most about this new release is that Onyx no longer takes a long time to clean out my computer when using the automation feature. I also have MacPilot 3.0 but I find Onyx's user interface is more organized and simplified. It also does a better job at cleaning my system than MacPilot 3.0. APPLENERD IMO, Onyx is one of the best maintenance utilities out there for Mac. I do think however, that the updating SUCKS!!! (No nice way to say it.) I think that if they used Sparkle (Which many other popular products including Awaken, SD 5, AppZapper, etc, etc use!) the product would be so much better because without Sparkle, you have to manually check for updates, which I never get the time to do. MGSARCH Just because it's not your preference doesn't mean it isn't ours. I would MUCH MUCH MUCH prefer that applications allowed the user to manually update instead of the app phoning home regularly. How much of a "applenerd" are you if you don't check versiontracker or macupdate regularly enough that this is a problem??? Onyx is a great tool and I love that's it's been and remains free. To say the updating function is broken is ignorant. There is nothing worse than an app that automatically updates where the update consequently breaks the app. Updates don't have to be continuos, I'm not sure where this myth originated that every v *.01 is absolutely necessary immediately. If the app is working well, I'll decide when to update it. All of these tools are just GUI's that run unix maintenance that is very powerful. It's crucial to understand what you're doing when you use OnyX or any of these maintenance GUI's. Eventually, if you really want to be in control of your Mac, which anyone with data they value should: learn the unix and how to use terminal. Relying on other people's maintenance scripts is bad practice when you don't even know what they do. Fortunately, OnyX is legit, I'm very wary of some of the other "Maintenance/Disk Utilities" .... XPLICIT Onyx' update feature definitely sucks (sorry, but it's exactly that). No feedback on the remaining download time, the application doesn't respond during the download, the server must be at someones home according to the poor download speed and if you didn't read the manual you'll wonder where the update is downloaded to. No misunderstanding: The App itself is great! But why is the update feature such a mess? Ever heard of Sparkle? (Version 1.9.3)

PANTHERA Count me as an unfortunate who decided early this morning to clean out my font cache and found version 1.9.1 a tad too aggressive (like in erasing ALL personal data). Mistakes happen, but this was a really big one, and not one I will forgive. All I can say is thank god for Time Machine. In 1.5 hours my boot drive was back up and all appears OK. All I lost was my customized disk icon. Anyone else using Time Machine to do a complete disk restore: be sure to run repair permissions immediately after. It has to reset some file permissions. Anyone who disagrees with the one star rating- imagine losing all of your personal data. Quality control is absolutely essential for this sort of utility. I just wish SuperDuper and Disk Warrior were available in Leopard flavors. Time Machine did work but for 90 uncomfortable minutes I was completely at its mercy (and the RAID 0 array my backup was on). (Version 1.9.2)
