ABUGIRGES  This is a very good app. What makes it problematic is when you have to work in a mixed environment where people use MS Visio. The exporting do Visio does not correctly work in a couple of instances so that you can never be sure that the document shows the same as before. You need to manually check everthing before sending it out. This should be improved... please!!

Apart from that OmniGraffle does a great job when it comes to any kind of concept specification.

GUNTIS  BLUESTAR >

I just tried to save my OmniGraffle Pro (OGP) 5.1rc1 (v.137.6.0.106738) document with the document window resized bigger than the actual document (about 1 inch to each side), then I quit application, re-opened saved document, and it opened with the same window size as it was saved in the previous session. No problems.

BLUESTAR  This is generally a nice app. BUT! A small thing really annoys the hell out of me and the developers are not listening. I still don't see a fix in the list of issues fixed that corrects the survival of a window's size setting after a quit and re-launch.

i.e., if one sets the window's size to be larger that the document (which I prefer for working with docs) upon relaunch and re-open the window boundaries revert to a default, which is the document's boundaries. This is still working in 4.1.2 and NOT after that.

MISSIONMAN  Hi there

Would be nice if you actually gave the ability to refresh the trial license with upgraded versions. I tried a copy of a previous version a while ago and have not been able to try any new versions of it ever since because I now receive "Your trial has expired" message so although the previous versions did not meet my requirements, I now no longer have the ability to see whether any future versions of Omnigraffle have the ability to swing me.

I understand you have to try prevent people reusing trials but there are ways to handle this like refreshing the license on upgrading the version for example, or simply putting an expiry on the beta license so it can't be used past a certain date (like Merlin do - download a copy of their software, you might be able to learn a better method of handling this).

I'll try the product again when you manage to resolve the licensing issues for trials, until then I'll continue using my Visio, because I can't see whether later versions are capable of matching my requirements.

FROBOZZ  You can always create your own stencils in OmniGraffle. As a UI designer, I created my own. In fact, you could probably take the old stencil from OmniGraffle 4.x and copy-and-paste it into a new stencil in 5.x.

Stencils are just small vector documents like any other OmniGraffle document-- except they have only one canvas.

OMNIGROUP  Thanks for your feedback on our pricing!

We try to price our products very competitively, and we believe that if you look at the alternatives in the same space (such as Visio and ConceptDraw) you'll find that our product is priced very reasonably. (And most of our customers strongly prefer it to those alternatives!)

I hope that you’ll take a second look at all the new features in OmniGraffle 5—it’s a very substantial upgrade. But you don’t have to take my word for it, we offer a two-week free trial (with full access to all features).

D9  Ethan, I can appreciate your comments. As I stated in an earlier post, it's certainly with OmniGroup's right to price their software as they deem appropriate.

However, I'd contend that your remarks are misguided towards the majority of the complaining posts. These are not potential OmniGraffle Pro users but current users who feel the price of upgrading their current version to 5 is not justified by the price. We are well aware of the incredible ease and features of OGP, but we do not carry that same admiration for version 5 at the current upgrade price.

Once again, OmniGroup is obviously entitled to pursue a policy that best suits their business. I just think a lot of us current users feel this policy is not in our best interest.

Thanks for "listening".

ESPIRIDION  Indeed it's an interesting way of treating loyal customers.

I've already spent some money on OGP, in addition to a few upgrades.

DIGGINESTDOGG  I am a long-time user of OG product (Focus, Graffle, Outliner)--Outliner and Graffle through several versions including upgrading to pro from the standard versions that came with my Mac 3 or 4 years ago.

But having paid the upgrade to 4 Pro only a year ago it seems I am balking at the stratospheric price of this one. The upgrade is twice as expensive as it needs to be for a great app I don't use daily. For example: Illustrator, clearly 5 times the app OmiGraffle Pro is, is $199 to upgrade from CS2 to CS3--5x the app but 2.5x the cost to upgrade. As I said--the OG 5 upgrade costs twice what it should cost.

This is where I stop patronizing Omni products I think. I'll stay on 4 and start evaluating a migration strategy and course.

JUDDBERT  I'm afraid I have to agree with Espiridion. I really cannot see anything in OGP version 5 that offers an incentive to upgrade from version 4. At $25 to $30 perhaps, but $75 - sorry, not interested. Like digginestdogg, I purchased OG Pro just a year ago and saw what; one minor upgrade? Sorry Omnipeople, but this is not the way to treat loyal customers - not if you want to keep them that is. I'll stick with version 4, and try to ignore the slightly tarnished view I now hold of OmniGroup.

ZEITKIND  Well, I think most v4 users never missed the features regarding Visio, so they don't see the "value" or v5. I tested OG several times in the past, but the missing support for Visio was just a killer for me. Now I consider buying it and I'm glad to see the Visio support. I bought ConceptDraw many years ago, but their price politic was far worse and the program kept crashing for me, so the ability to switch to OG is fine for me.

KAIDOH  Same for me: I used OG Pro for years and I really like it. The new features would be appreciated. But every user always only needs a subset of the new stuff (for me Visio support is absolutely unimportant while shared layers sound very promising). I understand that Omni wants to earn money with their products, but 80 $ for an upgrade is too steep for my budget and it's perceived benefit (as it is for OmniFocus btw).

I guess I'll be happy keeping version 4 for quite a while and hope for a discount some day.

SILVERDR  Thank you for your comment and explanations. Unfortunately they are not very cogent for long time users of your products. The changes in your pricing policy made me STOP upgrading. Sorry - I won't pay for an upgrade this much. I paid already for several "Pro" versions and upgrades in the past but with this move you made a "stop" for me. And judging by the comments (not only) here - I am not the only one thinking this way. Sure - it is your business and your choice but with the latest version's pricing schemes you stopped being a rare pearl of the software companies with great software and great pricing. This image is more and more lost now. As someone already mentioned - now we only need a competitive product to fully look away from you.

BEBDABHRHBRWEFG 3R§5Y5H4WTEDSFB  ditto on the upgrade price. $75 is ridiculous for the addition of... well, not much really... and a few bugfixes.

omnigroup's increasingly greedy attitude is alienating a lot of former customers. back in the day, when OSX was new, omniweb were the heroes of the mac software world, being amongst the first to release quality apps at decent prices for the new OS.

of late however their competitors' apps have superceded theirs in terms of quality - and omniweb's increasingly outlandish pricetags will do nothing but accelerate the stampede away from this increasingly out-of-touch company.

DYLAN MCNAMEE  I concur with the other folks. I don't mind paying serious money for software (heck, I bought OG Pro in the first place), but this upgrade fee is too rich for my blood. Yes, there's good stuff in this version, but much of it "belonged" in earlier versions (IMO), and the truly new stuff doesn't warrant the steep upgrade price.

MARUKO DRINKING TEAM  I agree: it's been a good app in the past, but $75 to upgrade is just too high. $49 would be okay. But $75 really does feel a little bit like BBEdit-style "gouge the existing customers quickly while we still don't have any direct competitors".

BBEdit encountered TextMate, and soon the price was cut by $100. I think it is time somebody made a DiagramMate (or whatever).

GREYMAN  I have been a long time user of Omni groups Omni Graffle pro (version 2.x) and have been keeping up to date by procuring new license updates as needed to get me to version 4.0 pro version. Now that the pro version has been released and I have looked at the price for an upgrade ($74.95) I think this will be the time that I part ways with Omni and the OmniGraffle Pro (and non pro) product.

I feel this pricing is a big mistake on their part with the majority of the OS X user base that would purchase this product probably owned a license copy of a recent visio product due to the lack of support from any native OS X application. You couple this new price and looking and what each user has paid for either VMWare Fusion or Parallels (79.99) to bridge this gap will make it hard to justify the extreme upgrade cost to upgrade from one version behind. I think $75 is a little bit steep for me not to want to start my virtualized windows xp system to look at a visio document

Also being a licensed user of current versions of OmniOutliner Pro, OmniWeb, and OmniFocus as well I will start having to think twice before upgrading my license for any of these other products that Omni produces.

D9  Yes, I agree w/ others that the upgrade price is way too much, especially for OGP 4 users. The additions certainly can't justify that amount.

This has become a terrible trend not only w/ these developers but a lot of Mac developers. It seems any "new" feature (or one perhaps intentionally not added previously) justifies a paid upgrade. It's really stopped me from even considering a lot of other shareware because of this trend.

As I've always felt, every developer has the right to charge what he/she feels their work is worth. We, in turn, have the right to decline...and I will exercise my right w/ this program!

DARYLF2  OmniGraffle 5 Pro is an impressive upgrade. Its new Visio binary file importer loaded my Visio 2007 .vsd files VERY well and very quickly. Bezier curves appear to be handled very well!

Some OmniGraffle 4 Pro documents imported a little oddly, though. While the drawings themselves were correct, the Canvas was smaller than in OmniGraffle 4 Pro, which was causing clipping when printing until adjusted (kind of a pain...).

That's all well and good, but this is a really excellent piece of software, and virtually unique in its capabilities. Also, I have found this company to offer outstanding technical and customer support.

So, while $79 is a sum of money (this is for the Pro upgrade, by the way), I think it is not unreasonable, given the quality of this software.

That said, I expect that I will only upgrade to the non-Pro version this time.

There are too many high cost upgrades and this one, in particular, really does not have so many indispensable features. It is a little like Microsoft - over-marketing and over-selling. DONMONTALVO  Omnigraffle Pro is one of the best applications ever made for Mac OS X. My only gripes are:

1. Keyboard shortcuts inconsistent with expected behavior.

2. Inability to maintain horizontal/vertical alignment on some connecting lines, especially where we need to overlap lines (I spend too much timeselecting one dot and moving it pixel by pixel and STILL not able to get overlapping lines to match up.

3. Inability to open some xml formatted exported files from Visio 2007.

4. Inability to get "keep fit to window" to stick between launches on same document

5. Page Setup doesn't stick on documents

I hope the new Beta resolves these issues...more than I hope for more features.

NCIANCA  OmniGraffle Pro is without question the best diagramming tool available for any platform. The new version 5 is a great update to this amazing tool.

The new features are welcome and well executed. Here is a quick list of some new or updated features:

The updated interface, designed to reflect the Leopard design direction, incorporates user interface elements well onto the window, giving the entire application an updated, modern & refreshed look.

Some common tools have been added directly onto the ruler eliminating the need to use the corresponding inspector to get to them (they are still in the inspector though). There is also a new Tool Palette similar to what many other programs have which should make it easier for Visio, Illustrator and other users to transition to OGP.

The new Stencils manager fixed numerous usability issues with the old one.

Expanded Variables support (but none yet that will display the foreground and background color values, useful when making a visual style guide).

Leopard QuickLook Support.

Shared Layers which replace the old Master Canvas. This one will take some getting used if you use Master Canvases, but it's really an awesome solution to something many have wanted for some time - the ability to add multiple master canvases to a single canvas. It also makes it very easy to adjust the items on the Shared Layer so that they show up everywhere.

Subgraphs allow you to group a collection of objects into a single entity very easily.

There are some big changes with OGP5 and this includes having to update your documents (QuickLook only works with OGP5 format files).

A slight issue is with documents that are larger then a printed page and where sized using the "Fit To Page". These will open with the page size reset to the standard page settings. The new scaling features should eliminate the prior issues with having documents that had more vertical or horizontal pixels then a standard printed page would hold.

You will also need to update any custom templates you are using.

OmniGraffle will you marry me?

OZEAN  This really is an excellent app. Using layers to add additional information step by step, makes it easy to convey even highly complex information. The user interface also helps a lot – allowing access to the functionality without having to dig through several layers of menus. As many others here have already stated: the output looks gorgeous and can easily be adapted to different environments. However, all of this is even topped by their customer service, which in my experience has been quick and forthcoming even with issues that might seem minor when seen from the perspective of a software company. Five stars, and some well invested money.

BLUESTAR  This is truly a great app for a lot of things. But the new version (4.2) doesn't remember window positions for me as the regular 4.1.2 version does. Open document, set window position, save, close document, quit app. Upon reopen the doc window is slimmed down to the document boundaries, i.e. this new version does NOT remember teh window pos. Anybody else encounter this issue? Version 4.1.2 correctly remembers the window position set upon re-open.

BLUESTAR  Great product, but the Beta doesn't remember window positions for me as the regular 4.1.2 version does. I talked to the support guys about this but I guess they haven't fixed it in this release. Also when I opened some files it gave me a bunch of "font errors" - but, I'm using FontAgent Pro and autoactivation - this, again works well in the regular 4.1.2 (non-beta) version of OmniGraffle Pro.

THIRSTYROBOT  A small-business owner's best friend. I keep finding new ways to use this amazing app. Create mind maps with none of the hassle I find with Novamind. Build mastheads and buttons for your website -- right down to the rounded edges and shadow backdrop -- in mere seconds. Build a quick sketch of what you'd like a website to look like. All without ever having to go through the hassle of using Adobe bloatware.

The only strike against this product is that it's really quite pricey. Plenty of us plunk down our money for it as is, yes, but I'd be willing to wager that the developers could triple their sales, just by nudging the price point down to $99.

JOJOMAN  I've tried to use omnigraffle on an on & off basis. I use it to plan the layout of our production facility.

Reason is that most people in my company uses windows visio, and when convert files from visio to graffle, I can never get the dimension to display properly.

Graffle still lacks the ability to properly lay down the dimension lines for object that I created. I can see that Graffle is an excellent software but without a complete dimension tools I still need to go back to my PC.

Large plant layout (20MB+ for my case), includes machinery, power lines, etc is almost unusable due to performance issue. Omni recognize this problem (see their website) but it must be solved before I can really put it into use.

The performance problem is when you drag a group of object (complex ones) that the software takes forever (sometimes 3 min) to complete the process, during this time, if you move the cursor it will take another 3min longer. Sounds crazy I know.

Hopefully, Omni will fix this soon, other then this, it is an great product and can easily beat similar software on any platform.

BOMBADIL  This has great potential and is a much easier and prettier alternative(though less advanced)to Adobe Illustrator. I use both programs and if Omnigraffle had a few more bells and wistles I'd be happy to trash the Adobe app.

I have to say this is and has been one of my favourite mac apps ever. The user interface is more intelligent than the Adobe solution and a good deal more attractive. The "snapping to point/line" function is better than Adobe's. This makes it perfect for flow charts and tree diagrams, and allowing a great deal more precision when aligning objects, in record time.

My only complaint is the incorrect rendering of shadows in exported images. Once they fix this it will be quite a mac gem!

I have to agree about the lines/shapes is a little odd surly a line could become a shape, or a shape become a line?

Really Great Software, Omni Outliner and Omni Web are also great. Buy them all and you get a discount.

keep up the amazing work!

STERNHAMMER  I love the way OmniGraffle looks and works and seem to find myself unable to resist trying out each new version that comes along.

I was very happy to see the inclusion of bezier curves in this version. Unfortunately bezier curves seem restricted to "shapes" and I can see no way to use them in unclosed shapes or lines. The "line" tool does not seem to allow bezier curves. How disappointing. I guess Adobe Illustrator and Macromedia Freehand are safe for now.

The old aestheticism was light, pleasing, subtle, elegant, and playful. Now it's turning into something too bold and less refined. Feel free to disagree. This is just my humble opinion.

T  Need the return of auto-collapsing inspector(s)! Why remove such a great feature? In version 4, an expanded inspector can sometimes expand off-screen or hide under the Dock. In version 3, the inspector could never hide under the Dock or expand off-screen. Version 3 was great from an UI and usability point of view. Never, ever remove great features when upgrading to a newer version, unless the new enhances the old. I've also seen other great apps change interfaces for the sake of change and version upgrades. And I've actually had to stop using those new versions. I say: Never change or fix things if it works well. I also liked the old magnets better: They actually looked like magnets!

T  Despite what I said that the new interface eats up space, I must say that the new outlining feature turns out to be great. Previously, it took time to map something out. (Creating the blocks and connecting lines.) Now, you simply outline it like in OmniOutliner, and you see things visually happen on your canvas. This turns Graffle from an app that was usable to something invaluable. Still, the interface could need some tweeking, especially the inspectors - it needs auto-collapsing and maybe even transparency feature.

T  As I've written before, on my iBook screen (1024*768) the new interface actually takes more screen space. The palettes are slightly wider and they don't automatically collapse. Also, the drawer eats my screen space. Previously, I could have a document window and all my pallettes on the side - and the collapsable palettes function really helped. Now I have larger palettes, which don't automatically collapse, and a drawer to deal with. I give the new interface a thumbs down. Yes, it may work on those widescreen computers, it doesn't on my little iBook screen.

ANONYMOUS  The new UI is much improved but, for me, the thing which really bumps v4 into a new orbit is the ability to enter text in outline format and have it appear as a structured OmniGraffle chart. If only it now had one-click "add new box" facilities, I could retire the (now rather tired) Inspiration and the elegant but rather limited NovaMind. As it is, OmniGraffle has gone from being something I often contemplate using but back away from -- because of the tedium of switching between shape, text and line tools -- to something I reach for half a dozen times a day, in one quantum jump. The Tipping Point, I'd say. Great stuff. (And graphically, results which make people say "Wow! What did you do *that* with?")

My Powerbook with it's 1152x768 resolution was always a matter of fiddling with my workspace to get the tools I needed. The new beta interface not only is much more visually appealing, adds many new and useful features, but is also significantly more efficient and takes up a lot less space! Can't wait for the final!

GEOLOGIST  Brilliant application and superior results! I use it to create poster for print and web (see the new global geological timescale promotional poster for example at stratigraphy.org), The workspace is intelligent, with easily navigable palettes that don't leave you wondering where that tool was. The smart guides and alignment features I find more versatile than Illustrator's. Although, I still use Illustrator and Omnigraffle side by side since for projects with many hundreds of objects, Illustrator seems a bit faster. Highly recommended!

ANONYMOUS  Great program overall. A few minor problems:

1) It doesn't import or save directly to visio binary files, which are the industry standard as of today--it does a fair job of importing/exporting Viso XML files, but unfortunately those files are far less common.

2) It uses screen real estate unwisely. For example, the pop-up Zoom % menu is by the window resize widget. It should be tucked up top with the canvas and layer controls as this makes the window waste space drawing empty scroller bars when you are working on a single page graphic. Also, when you show the rulers, it wastes an entire horizontal strip for one single "Units" popup menu. This also should be tucked into the layer/canvas control strip. All this wasted space reminds me of all the control strips in Windows Word and Visio where more than half your screen is wasted with strips and you only see a port-hole of your actual document (not that it is anywhere near as bad as microsoft in that regard, but you get the idea).

Also, the auto-lines do not wrap around objects nicely like they do in Visio and it is a little more feature poor than Visio in a number of areas. There is no auto-numbering of items for example.

All that beign said, it's my favorite app of its type on any platform.

1. It's not an open format, and

2. Nobody has reverse-engineered it yet.

Asking OG to read Visio binary is like expecting Pages to read Microsoft Word files. Oh, wait. Someone has reverse-engineered that format already.

Its interface is laid out very well and has a lot of functionality. Of all the graphical programs I have in my toolbox, this one is in the top 4: Illustrator, Photoshop, Director MX, OmniGraffle Pro.
