VERROCCHIO CALABAR_BEAN, sorry but you are past the line... rating a software that you haven't even tried, and specially, rating its functionality poorly and backing them with wrong assertions is simply unacceptable. Specially when considering that you have obviously been using for free this software which required a considerable amount of work. FYI: This is a major new version, rebuilt from scratch, and no expiry date.

Is FireStarter-FX dead? It was the only GUI that used 'cdrdao' that I could find for OS X. Would like to see the broken links fixed to D/L the RC1, and know if this project is dead or not. | |

BGARLOCK @MACCENTRIC: Run it in Rosetta (RT click on the Icon, choose 'Get Info', and check the 'Open using Rosetta' checkbox, and it should launch. Mine crashes on startup as well. I also did a little detective work, to find a working link for the RC1 build, which is not time limited: It seems like this is dead though. I got lucky finding this link, which only had a link to 1.0b12, which won't even launch because of the date expiration: (The link to b12 is close to the bottom of the page, and the entire page is in French) I just love this app, because it integrates the best (I think) command line CD burning software out there; 'cdrdao' -- Open Source, at sourceforge.net

COUGARBLUE The best way to kill your software is to get too cute with restrictions, codes, or expiration dates. I've been a Mac user since 1986, beta-tested 100's of games and utilities, and assembled shareware/freeware discs for user groups. Take a good look at the software products to make it from the beta stage to successful sales and I don't think you could name one that made it to retail shelfs that played the expiration game. Limit the features, whatever you think best, but once you make a small utility hard to use, the Mac world runs away from you. After I noted that you misbranded your product as freeware, I decided against even downloading it. There are too many comparable products that do the same thing, to charge either an unreasonable high price or make it difficult to install and use. One of the very best freeware efforts ever is 0.50 Senuti. I have had a great experience using the software. If the developer made it to version 1.0 and charged $19, or added features and charged up t0 $29, I'd pay for it in a heartbeat. If the German guy who developed similar product priced at $49 to start; sold a hundred copies, I'd be shocked. Sadly you have chosen to get fancy and shoot yourself in the butt, by making the process more trouble than the products worth.

BRUSETH Like I told the other poster --> Just go to your date and time preference panel and put your date back a year or so and then start the program and you will be able to use it. Not an elegant solution, but one that works in a pinch. good luck.

DABLUB Im totally embarassed. If i download and "unzip" and get the info on the firestarter.app, it shows me version 1.0b4. If i look into the contents, there is an xml file where Version 10b6 is mentioned. And it _should_ be 10b7. Now what's up? Could also be my System. But i have deleted every File that was left by my old firestarter installation, which was the Library file. Now what?

ANDREW C. The user interface is horrible and non-intuitive. Lack of instructions or tutorials in the program or on the developer's web site make learning how to use the program tedious. I am not sure how many tries and setting changes the average user has to go through to get the program to work for them but by the number of comments on here it is clear the makers need to simplify the way it functions. With the many simpler and better working programs on the PC side I am not sure why it is so hard for someone to get it right for the Mac.

ROB S The key functionality of this software is included in the OS X Disk Utility. Having failed with Firestarter (it gave me an error when attempting to burn the image to CD), I turned to Disk Utility with no problems. Also you can choose to rip the CD image as a standard ISO which can be shared with PC's (ISO buster, VMWare & Vitual PC (PC & MAC) could mount them directly).

KURT TAPPE I burned a test DVD of one of my partitions using Firestarter 1.0b6. No errors were reported during the process, but the resulting DVD would not even mount when inserted back into the very Mac that burned it. This was under MacOS X 10.3.4 on a 15" PowerBook G4/1.25.

IANAL The author hasn't modified cdrdao, but is simply calling it from this front-end. Thus there's no need to release the source (which is available from the cdrdao developers). Merely using a binary, like linking to a library, isn't a derivative work.

ANONYMOUS Firestarter is based on cdrdao, which is only available under GPL. Which means that the Firestarter source code needs to be released under GPL. Yet I don't see that. The application itself isn't bad. But, if I understand the GPL correctly, they are in violation of cdrdao's license.

MAVRC You don't understand the GPL correctly. If you use or modify a piece of GPL code in something you write, then you have to release the modified code. i.e., if you were to use CDRDAO as a basis for writing a cd-burning module for a program you wrote, you'd have to release the code for that module, not the code for your entire program. The GPL isn't viral like that. As an aside, if you dig into the Firestarter FX package you'll note that the author actually includes the binaries for CDRDAO et. al in the package. It appears to be just a very advanced front end for the cdtools, so I can't think up a reason that the author would have to GPL anything (unless they're modifying the CDRDAO cod before building it.) But that's one man's opinion. I'm just a geek, not a legal expert.

Sorry, but that is beyond our control here at Macupdate.com. CABBAGE I don't know why I didn't notice this before but I can extract my audio cd's in parania-mode. Now I can have all the power of Exact Audio Copy but on the Mac. And I no longer have to use that ugly X11 CDRoast. Must notify the peeps at etree.org and the SHN & FLAC audio traders.

JASON Recent build 4/14/03 worked well with iBook 700Mhz combo. Burned a VCD and SVCD from .mov files. Used iMovie, MissingMpegTools and MissingMenuGen before burning with Firestarter. Succeeded after leaving the burner empty and insert the CD-R when asked to burn window appears. Voila! Well done.

ANTONY It took me sometime to workout how to use the FX 1.0b2 , it wasn't great but I managed to burn one cd, don't forget I had to waste about 7 cds to do this. I was hoping that would change but unfortunately version FX 1.0b3 did not make it better it made it worse, I can't even make a cue/bin of a folder never mind burning it. This could be a great software if it works, something that other software companies havn't offered yet. good luck

ANONYMOUS Looks promising, but doesn't help me with a CD which I haven't been able to copy with Apple tools or Toast. The CD in question has three different sessions, the first is an Audio CD followed by two data tracks. When the CD is inserted, would get three CD icons appear on the desktop. Anyway, this application when backing up the CD to disk, only creates toc/bin files for the data tracks and doesn't create one for the Audio CD part. Even if it did create a toc/bin for the audio, when writing a CD, it only allows you to select one to burn where as I would want to write all three back to the CD. Anyone know a way of doing this on the Mac? Have also looked at xcdroast from fink which I know on Linux will probably allow me to raw copy the whole disk in one go, but the fink version wouldn't recognise the inbuilt CD in the iBook, possibly because the drive can also handle reading on DVD format.

ANONYMOUS Simply copy one session at a time - image the data sessions and extract the audio tracks, then write them to a CD-R in the same order they were on the original disc. Just remember not to close the disc in between sessions.
