TECHCHICK99  I was looking for a small app to help me crop and resize pictures and one of my colleagues recommended ImageWell. And yes, it is simple, easy and quickly done.

The only thing that I really don't understand: Why do you guys hide the save button? I always have to search for it. GUI could be optimized in terms of usabilty.

VOLLARE  Downloaded it yesterday and can't understand why this is called a "hot pick" here on macupdate?

There are lot of other apps which offer the same, some for free, as mentioned here in the comments.

Tried "Thumbs Up" and it works great, so what's up here?

ImageWell a "hot pick"???

MISHA  Image Well has been around forever... it was one of the first apps that could do what it does. It's seen 100,000+ downloads over the course of its existence at MU (which is quite a lot) and the reviews are quite positive as you can see.

We generally don't turn off a Hot Pick unless something measurably better comes along (and even then, we'll probably just add that as a Hot Pick and not take away the other app's Hot Pick status, unless it stops being developed).

RPAEGE  Thumbsup does not "work great" when working with multi-page PDF files. It also can't produce a thumbnail with exactly the same name as the original (but with a different extension). The developer fails to understand this despite repeated requests.

*****

RPAEGE  With the exception of drag and drop thumbnail creation, ImageWell beats Thumbsup! hands down.

Imagewell allows more manual control than Thumbsup!, and that is a major plus.

Thumbsup! has a fatal flaw — if you drop a multipage PDF file onto it the resulting thumbnail will be of the second page of the document, not the first. This renders it impractical for production work.

ImageWell, on the other hand, offers much more reliable and robust processing, with a responsive devoloper.

Thumbsup!'s developer seems not to care too much — which is forgivable given that his app is free.

Imagewell could be vastly improved if it took Thumbsups!'s drag and drop capability and fixed it so it actually works properly with PDF files.

-1 to ImageWell for lack of drag and drop mode. +5 for ease of use, value and stability.

This is simply the best quick editor available.

FFASS  ImageWell works great for my needs. It's a WYSIWYG resizer, so you can see your image resize as you drag a slider. I've used many of it's features: adding borders & text to images, grouping multiple jpegs together to make a single jpeg, and even adding cartoon speech balloons. It can also save your PDF and PSD docs as jpeg, tiff, or png files. There's a bit of a learning curve to use all of it's features so maybe there's a way the developer can simplify the controls or make the controls more obvious (maybe use an inspector palette so the controls are always visible somewhere). Well worth the $20 since I use it quite often.

BRUMM  20 DOLLARS ....OR just FREE as in BEER:

The best resizer I've found for Mac is the FREEWARE 'ThumbsUp',

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11898/thumbsup

ThumbsUp can not only create thumbnails or icons for images and movies.

ThumbsUp goes far beyond, it's a superfast batch image resizer, a format converter (for example jpg to tiff, etc.) and ThumbsUp can sharpen (!) and antialias (!) the images (not only the thumbs as falsly stated in the manual) and can do all that in one fast step.

...and yes, ThumsUp is FREEware.

FFASS  This person's intention to promote his favorite app at another's developer's expense is nutty:

ThumbsUp cannot be compared to ImageWell. It's like comparing a couch to a running shoe...they perform completely different functions. If you want an image resizer and editer then use ImageWell, but if you simply want to create a small thumbnail image then use ThumbsUp.

RPAEGE  Thumbsup! is fatally flawed when working with multi-page PDF files. It is therefore, despite being free, quite useless for production purposes. It works fine for standard images and single page PDF files.

NOSFERATU  Oh, I have forgotten:

I would be fair to split the reviews for the new payware version from the old freeware version, most high star ratings were given for the freeware version.

I've downloaded this app cause of it high rating, but afterwards as I see the reviews, the most people rated the freeware such high, that seems not very fair if I think of the competitors.

I would be like "at first I make it freeware to get friendly and highrated reviews and then I switch to payware with all the good old freeware reviews staying".

That's hardly fair!

I am no competitor, only a user but I don't want to be tricked in any way. I think many visitors are using the star rating for the first orientation, like I did.

Freeware is rated more friendly of course, so I think it would be fair from this sites admins to correct that. It is misleading and a bit of unfair competition now.

I will try now the apps listed under "OTHER PEOPLE SUGGEST" but that's not the same as a fair comparison would be.

NOSFERATU  Not that bad, but would better if the intial dialog window would be bigger and resizable.

All the features are so disorganized and hard to use, for example to sharpen a resized image you need to go to an extra second dialog window each time and edit it there. That seems a bit stupid to me, because if you make an image smaller (first dialog window) it nearly _always_ needs a bit sharpening (second dialog window). That's _one_ step: Resizing & Sharpening, - but in ImageWell you have to go throu _two_ dialog windows just for that.

And I don't like the image editing tools (contrast, etc.) to be inside the edit window, they are to small, you can't handle that tiny sliders there if you have a high screen resolution.

You make to big steps if you move the slider only a bit. To use the sliders in a sensitive way, they need to be longer, I would put them in a moveable tool palette (Here is the place for a second window, just combine the first two dialog windows into one resizable window and put the tools in a floating window.)

The next thing I don't like is the long time till you see changes, the time it needs to redraw and show your changes is far to long. If I drag a slider I want to see the changes immediatly.

Next: All is so tiny, is this app designed for 640 x 480 screens?, It's an OS X app, who uses such small screen resolutions on OS X?

And, very important: where is the tool for correcting the white balance? Only contrast, saturation, brightness, but on many images you need to change the white point a bit. That basic feature is missing completely in ImageWell.

My conclusion: ImageWell is to disorganized for me and on big screens not useable, the app needs a redesign for a faster and better workflow.

I stay with GrahicConverter (Althought I hate GrahicConverter's interface as well) because I get so much more for a little bit more money. And for the smaller tasks I use the fantastic freeware PhotoToolCM (to poor that I can only use it on my PPCs, I would prefer to pay the 20 dollars to the developer of PhotoToolCM if he would make it Intel-ready.).

That's my review, like it or not.

FREDDUCKER  It does a great job for cropping pictures. At least there's an option so that your pictures don't come out all squeezed, and the free trial lets you do what you need to see the program with no restrictions.

MEMPHISBIRD  ImageWell needs a timed screen capture. I use ImageWell all the time and like it a lot, but I still have to fire up another application to get a timed screen capture. HANDYCAM  It only "phones home" to check the serial you entered is legit. Why is that wrong?

If you buy a real serial, then there's no problem -- it checks once and then that's it. You make it sound like spyware.

ImageWell does many things Pictureque does not: extensive scaling and cropping control for one. I have Photoshop and many times all I really need to use for web work is ImageWell. I can't recommend it enough.

ZAPP BRANNIGAN  After trying this out and being a Picturesque user, I can heartily say this little program is quite underwhelming. First of all, it is not free, as you have to purchase 'xtra' functionality to make it useable. Second, the user interface is clunky and hard on the eyes. Doing something as simple as adding rounded corners to an image is an exercise in futility. Also, when stacked up against other programs of its ilk, free or otherwise, it's just underwhelming. The final straw would be the 'phoning home' to see if you stole their 'titularly' free software (just use Little Snitch for annoying programs such as this) and the developer's rather rude replies to users (see below). With that being said, even though Picturesque is not free, it is by far a better program in the many functions in which they compete.

VEGGIEDUDE  I don't see this as a image editor. I have Photoshop for that. I see this as a FTP program to quickly put images up for my blog. The fact that it can do some quick on the fly editing is just icing on the cake for me, and I do use them for the web images have to place. But putting rounded corners on images, that's not what anyone usually does for web imagery. Just my 2 cents in a age where the dollar is second fiddle to the euro.

DR. FAUSTROLL  ImageWell is one of those products that has blended seamlessly into my workflow, and now I would be hard pressed to do without. I do a lot of work that requires minor image edits and markup (particularly of screenshots) - more than what iPhoto provides, but not enough to justify launching Photoshop or GraphicConverter. ImageWell fits my needs perfectly, and the built-in FTP/WebDAV publishing system allows me to save my work to multiple locations easily. Since it is small and lightweight, I leave it open all the time - no screen clutter or memory/CPU hogging. Three caveats for potential purchasers: first, there are a couple of bugs that show up when working with very large images - zoom and scrolling don't work quite right. Second, the application lacks an undo - this is a bit of a nuisance. Third, Plasq is currently developing an application called Skitch that may prove a worthy competitor to ImageWell - it is certainly worth checking out.

XTRALEAN  Actually, I should add an amendment to this post.

ImageWell 3.3 now checks the serial numbers with our server for valid numbers. By checking the serial numbers with our server the phony serial numbers that have been floating around the net no longer work - only serial numbers that have been purchased work.

And we added the feature for checking for automated updates.

To respond to your statement -

"I really like this App and I'm seriously considering paying for the extras. I regret that I won't be able to buy your program, though, if you continue to confuse people with talk of "stealing."

XTRALEAN  Whatever.

We are protecting the investment that our customers have made when they purchased the Xtras.

ImageWell is free with lots of features. We added Xtras such as batch processing, more shapes etc for a very small cost. $20 was low cost when I got into computers 25 years ago.

We've made regular updates to the product this year to both the free version and the Xtras.

ImageWell 4 is going to be super-fantastic. It's been in development for the last 12 months and we've invested a lot of time and research developing the next version. ImageWell 4 will be a free update for ImageWell 3 Xtra users.

If we didn't protect our product from casual piracy then we wouldn't be protecting our paying customers because either we would go out of business or we couldn't offer all these updates and the upgrade to the next version for free.

Any developer that allows their product to be easily stolen nowadays is not your friend. Paying customers just end up paying for lame updates or end up with a product that never gets updated.

Since version 1 came out of ImageWell it's been free and we can continue to offer a free version for basic image editing needs today - with top notch tech support at support@xtralean.com, screen cast tutorials, an open discussion board at support.xtralean.com and it's been localized in 15 different languages.

XTRALEAN  ImageWell doesn't phone home, never did and never will. It doesn't even automatically check for updates.

If you are wondering how ImageWell detects pirated serial numbers, these numbers are already inside the ImageWell product - so there is no need to 'phone home' bypass firewalls etc. So if a pirate set up a firewall, turned off their internet connection, used Snitch or whatever, ImageWell would still detect the pirated serial number.

As an interesting side note to piracy. I was completely surprised by the sheer number of them, for every sale of the Xtras, there were 3 pirates that tried to steal the Xtras with a pirated number. That's just an incredible amount when you think about it.

Imagine what a retail store would do if for every item sold there were 3 theives that were ready to steal that item?

The Internet is a wonderful place, you can find free products like ImageWell. Anyone can also find pirated serial numbers to easily steal software, and developers can find these numbers too - it doesn't take much cleverness. Heck if we developers can develop a product we certainly can find pirated serial numbers for our own product.

So phoning home? bypassing firewalls? LOL, I just put the pirated serial number inside the product, I don't have to be that clever to detect it.

I'm sure it won't take long before there is a new batch of pirated serial numbers, so for the next update of ImageWell, I'll have to add those numbers as well. Unless, I don't mind having 3 ImageWell Xtras stolen for every one copy sold.

As a final note, I'm happy to say that there are hundreds of thousands of happy users of ImageWell that are using ImageWell in free mode. ImageWell is localized in 14 different languages, and we'll being adding Russian as the 15th language donated by a generous ImageWell user. I certainly wouldn't build an application that destroys the trust of these users.

That's all, sorry for the long response,

FLOODLE  I can understand your position - you want people to pay for your software. This is completely reasonable.

However, please don't muddy the waters of this complex issue by incorrectly referring to it as "stealing." The proper term, of course, is "copyright infringement." I know you want to be paid for your software, but creating bogus analogies isn't the way to encourage people to do so.

Is copyright infringement illegal? Yes. Is it immoral? Possibly. But whatever it is, it doesn't magically become stealing because you wish it to be so.

I really like this App and I'm seriously considering paying for the extras. I regret that I won't be able to buy your program, though, if you continue to confuse people with talk of "stealing." HENRIKTEKNIK  Highly competent application. Beats any other quick resize/rotate, etc. image manipulator app that I've tried. It can even upload the images to a remote location!! And not even that; in addition to that, it can even automatically copy the link to the file on the remote server, in many different link formats... Things like that makes it apparent that XtraLean Software is a company who pay attention to nice little detals, that most of the competitor apps are missing out.

I was also very impressed on the great support that I received from XtraLean Software. I sent a query and the day after I had an email in my inbox, with a very thorough rundown on the steps required to troubleshoot my problem.

1. I would like it if it did not try to open the last image since the last launch, sometimes I have deleted it and imagewell seems to take forever to give up.

MAKAI  "New Edit Window with layering control" is an almost too prosaic description for a facility offering a method that I've always regarded the most natural way to edit photos but which I've found surprisingly hard to find: Define an output size which adds a layer onto the photo, then size and move the original 'against' the layer frame until it does contain exactly the desired detail of the motive. This adds a lot of value to ImageWell!

Just two little quirks:

There is still something wrong (not totally perfect) about the crop-tool in v.3: I'm not quite sure, but the procedure of cropping gets confused from time to time – I mean, why not have a simple, straight-forward handling: select the crop-tool, then click in the image, and the modification-handles show up immediately? As it is now, it is a tricky game of (automatic full) selection-shade, bringing up the handles, and not loosing focus. Sorry, hard to explain, but I'm sure it should be even easier, more robust (cropping v.2 was much more robust, though not as elegant).

I would like to have the modifications-handles on the crop-margin to be a bit more subtle, not these rather large, screamy yellow dots.

Another point: I think, IW doesnt accept "/", slashes in filenames, though OS X, the Finder do.

Dont get me wrong: this tool rocks!

XTRALEAN  A special thanks for all the feedback and bug reports so far to help us make ImageWell 3.0 the best we can.

The number 1 complaint so far is the cropping features are too complicated in ImageWell 3.0 compared to ImageWell 2.1. We are working on redoing the UI to make it more intuiative and easier.

Please continue to submit feedback and bug reports via the built in bug reporter.

I agree. I think easier-cropping is most wonrderful function of Imagewell 2.

So please keep it simple, don't make it like cheap-photoshop as well as many free imaging-soft in here...

SHAWN T  Does anyone know how to find the the older image well, the one that works with os systems earlier than 10.3. The older version worked fine with my computer and then all of a sudden, it won't open any more. The new version won't either, but I think it's because my os sytem is 10.2.8 . Here is the message from the crash log if anyone knows how to read it?

ANONYMOUS  This is phenomenal even more so than the Easy Frame which I tried additionally.

E.F. was a tiny bit more versatile in types of shapes yet, it didn't have a "drop shadow" capacity.

If you don't want to complicate your life and/or don't need Photo Shop, this little Image Well is extremely user-friendly, stable, and even screen captures.

Certainly worth your time and it will cost you nothing.

TERRY ADAMS  When I saw this little app I thought, hmm, I will check it out. Boy am I glad I did! I think the GUI on this is just absolutely top notch!

I started using it as a tool to help me make news updates for a website, and now I end up using it all the time.

For example, do a quick screen grab, do a little highlight on the image, resize it to fit a preview thumbnail and upload it to a folder on my website in about 10 seconds. 10 actual seconds.

Seriously seriously awesome.

JIM  This is an incredibly useful little application. Sending files to my iDisk is MUCH faster than using Apple's built-in option.

To cleatus: I have a dual 1ghz and it's not slow at all, in fact it's quite speedy. But your problem is that you are using 25MB files. This app was meant for web photos which usually fall in the range of a few hundred k, not MBs!

I will agree with you that some of the buttons such as "options" and "quit" should be accessible at all times without having to switch tabs to get to them. But does that rather small issue really warrant giving the app 1 star across the board?

You obviously don't understand what the app was meant to be used for, and it doesn't even sound like you have actually used it much. Furthermore, some of your compaints are just plain stupid since there are many menu extras that don't move around or quit by dragging them out of the menu (Konfabulator and Meteorologist come to mind). This is an issue of Apple's, not the developer of this app.

If you think it's so terrible, why don't you code your own app and let everyone use it. If not, a little more constructive criticizm is in order.

I'm giving the app 5 stars across the board just to spite your rather childish and uninformed review.

LONE STRANGER  cleatus,

Constructive criticism is usually helpful and well accepted by software developers. Trashing a freeware app that somebody spent a lot of time on only succeeds in making yourself look small. CLEATUS  That's brilliant, a person from xtralean giving their own app 5 stars across the board. The ratings are optional for a reason, don't rate your own software, that's even worse than all of your friends rating it. In an attempt to balance you out (impossible with your rating army), I'll give you all one stars again.

As for the Quit button, I know it's there, ridiculously burried.

CLEATUS  Wow, can xtralean tell UI guidelines from a hole in the grond? The intention seems well enough, I guess, but what a mish-mash of buttons. VERY sluggish on a dual 1GHz at all times, and especiallly when applying shapes and shape attributes (test file was 25MB). I have yet to be able to get the value in the border box ot be enered with the keyboard, only clicking ont eh arrows seem to work. I have also been unable to be able to manually enter values for the dimensions of the file, whic seem to have a maximum of 650 (what I am guessing is pixels, because it doesn't actually say what the measurement is). Having to go to Options to change the JPEG quality, as if it were an application preference?? I could go on and on, but I think this is enough of a start. Where are all of these high ratings coming from, the developer and his friends? Well, actually, they are. go check out the MacMinute forums for proof of that.

DADDYMAC  The only thing that irks me is not necessarily the fault of the program- it fails to upload to my web host, which doesn't make use of 'passive mode'- therefore it stalls and never uploads my image.

But it uploads to my iDisk beautifully!

This is a great app for those who post to message boards and frequently display images in their threads. The fact that the program creates its own tags for doing so is invaluable!
