PI-314 Many thanks for this clever, simple, and helpful application. Used with TextEdit, it will allow me not to buy MS Office, as I only used Word to write articles without layout... but I needed absolutely a powerful word counter. Here it is ! Icing on the cake, the developer is so kind and responsive. Congratulations from France (Version 2.7)

It shows an error message - "NSReceiverEvaluationScriptError: 4 (1)" - on whatever you click. You can't even quit the application by clicking Quit in the menu bar or C+Q. iMac Intel 10.4.11 (Version 2.6)

DAVID HANAUER Word Counter has been tested on more than one machine running OS X 10.4 on an intel mac and has worked well. Please contact me directly if you are experiencing trouble (Word Counter developer) (Version 2.6)
| May 1 2007 |
DAVID HANAUER Word Counter cannot open Pages documents directly. As stated in the "What's New" section, Word Counter work with the Pages application itself. So if you have both Word Counter open and Pages open, Word Counter should be able to count the text in the Pages document. You must set it to work with Pages in the Word Counter preferences and then make sure the floating counter window is active. If you still have problems I would suggest e-mailing me and I can try to help you. (Version 2.4)

ALLBLUE Could anyone explain the advantage of using this app over WordService? http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10523 It provides 37 different word services, including statistics - words, characters, lines - accessible through the service menu, with no need to have a separate app running. I only ask because Word Counter sounds such a good bit of software, but I don't see that it would give me any additional functionality. Incidentally, if you do not want all 37 services fattening up your service menu, this other bit of freeware, Service Manager http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11777 is a PrefPane which allows you to remove any service you do not require from the menu. THE VALRUS Haha, updated in time for NaNoWriMo excitement to start picking up. Marketing genius, I say. That is, if you were making any money off it. ;) (Version 2.2)

CLEAN CREATIVE I love this little application. LOVE LOVE LOVE it and use it all the time. It's great when setting up templates for client work where I need to have a specific number of characters in certain areas on a layout, I no longer have to count the characters individually. UGH, what a pain that used to be. The application is great, the price is better and thank you all for making this. (Version 2.1)

ANONYMOUS SWEET! This should be a basic feature in any OS, but kudos to someone developing it and making it free. (Version 1.9)

KUNGA David Hanauer is a genius. The elegance and simplicity that this necessary utility for anyone who needs to fit a classified's character or article's word limit provides is amazing. Note the attention to detail in the disc image graphic and the application icon - pure breathtaking beauty. I think this one belongs in the Hall of Fame among all freeware. Only thing missing is Clipboard Counting. I'm sure that's next. (Version 1.8)

CHARLES S. Those who don't already have WordService should do a search for it, here on MacUpdate. It can do word counts, and a good deal more, from within any Services-aware application (TextEdit, etc). (Version 1.4)

SCHMELDING WordService does look cool, but Services are only available within Cocoa applications. Word Counter works as a standalone app and may be more flexible than WordService because of that. I guess it comes down to whatever floats your boat. (Version 1.5)

ANONYMOUS So don't use non-native applications that don't work with services. (Version 1.7)

ANONYMOUS Talking about Services -- how, where do I find the (whatever they're called) plugins that appear in the Services' menu? I'm, like, inundated with them and would like to trash those I don't use. (Version 1.7)
| May 9 2005 |
THEL As far as I can tell, there aren't any separate plugins, per se - the services are built into each services-aware application and its data is added to the menu when the app is launched - but "Service Manager" would enable you to turn individual items off & on. The info & download page - http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11777 (It's worked perfectly for me with Panther for months, but I haven't added it to my just-installed Tiger yet, so can't say for certain re: 10.4 compatibility.) WILLIAM Wonderful little application. Quick, simple and best of all FREE. Perfect when you just need a word count but don't want to open a full WP program. Has updated twice in the last couple of weeks. Kudo's to David Hanauer the developer. (Version 1.3)
