FORMICA This is a very nice little app. However, I really wish it offered the option of placing some kind of icon in the menu bar that I could use to start it up quickly and easily, instead of using up valuable space in the Dock. Also, it would be nice to have the option to adjust font size because it uses a tiny font. (Version 4.5)

THUS.SPAKE.Z Been using EasyFind for several years now, with no issues. It's always worked beautifully and reliably for me; this latest version is no exception.... no problems at all on my MacBook Pro Intel core 2 duo w/Leopard 10.5.7. I use it to find and delete every file of software that I want to get rid of. Works far more reliably than any of the app deletion software. In my experience, none of them always finds every file of software that I want to delete. I've tried most every file deletion app and after using them I've searched for more files with EasyFind and usually it comes up with several or many files that the others have missed. A big thank you to Devon (a really fine software company) for creating this gem and offering it free of charge. . (Version 4.5)

MACTECHHEAD This new version is a vast improvement over the last version. A couple more tweaks and this would be pure perfection for me. The new search string highlighted in color is nice but would be better if we could control the color option though. I would have preferred using a dark red instead of a bright blue. The list view is greatly improved with the ability to move the columns and resize them but it would be even nicer if we could control those columns by turning off the ones we don't need. I only like to know the name, size and location of what I was searching for. And I would have preferred to see my searches sizes shown in megabytes not in kilobytes. An option to turn toggle either MB's or KB's would be nice. All in all, no complaints. Some minor tweaks and this would be the perfect search tool for me. But as it is now, I will continue to use my own home-made Realbasic program I compiled instead which has my own features albeit in a far bigger bloated program. Thanks for the great effort in improving this all the same. (Version 4.5)

MOPPERMAN This is a good program if you only want to search your local machine, perhaps, and I love the interface - I wish Apple would return an interface like this to Spotlight. But try to search a Mac OS X 10.5 Server share that has hundreds of thousands of work files on it with this app, and it becomes useless... 3 - 4 minutes to complete a search over a gigabit network. Spotlight may be a pain because you can't configure it very well, but it is fast (nearly instantaneous), especially with 10.5 Server Spotlight indexing. Personally I have no issues with Spotlight indexing, but this application does not act like it really uses an index if it's there. (Version 4.0.1)

RUFTY TUFTY EasyFind does NOT use an index. That's clearly stated in the first sentence of the description. The reason it's so useful (when Spotlight isn't) is that Spotlight only indexes part of your system, and doesn't find anything in the areas that aren't indexed. And, indexing >everything< would take a long time, and take a lot of space for the index. The genius of EasyFind is that it is fairly fast, considering that it doesn't use an index. I use it a few times a month to find system files, etc., and a couple of minutes or so is no big deal (I do something else while I'm waiting). 3 or 4 minutes to search an entire server over the network is actually pretty impressive. While it's not as fast as you might like, you might want to ask - what's the alternative? The only way to do it faster is to build an index, with all the overhead that entails. (Version 4.0.1)

K0GG I don't know if your question was just light hearted or 'truth in jest' but if you add a hard drive to the Privacy list (System Preferences/Spotlight/Privacy) Spotlight will stop searching it. Whether this actually disables Spotlight, I don't know. (Version 4.0.1)

JOSEPH SQUIRE To disable Spotlight indexing on the main volume, do "sudo mdutil -i off /" in Terminal. To disable Spotlight on other volumes, do "sudo mdutil -i off ". You'll obviously need root access to do this. There are probably GUI tools to do the same thing, but I did it on my system from Terminal. You'll probably want to get rid of everything in the "Privacy" tab of the Spotlight system preference so you can at least search files by filename in the Finder. I've done all this and I'm happier with Spotlight disabled like this. (Version 4.0.1)

DRDUL A follow-up to my earlier post... I heard back from the developer, who explained that the file type drawer is only used for searches of file contents (the fourth option under "Search for"). For the other three types of searches, it has no effect. The way to restrict the other searches to specific file types is to include the file extension in the search. For example, to find a Word a document with "foo" in the name, enter "foo doc" in the search box. To find a PDF with "foo" in the name, enter "foo pdf." The downside of this approach is that you can only search for one file type at a time it doesn't work to enter "foo doc pdf" in an effort to search for Word files and PDFs. (Version 4.0.1)

DRDUL I want to like EasyFind, but one thing is driving me nuts. I can't figure out how to limit the search to specific file types. I pop open the drawer on the left side and uncheck "Scan all files." I then check the box next to the first line, where I've typed several file extensions: "txt, rtf, rtfd, text" for example. The idea is to limit the search to text files. When I click the Find button, however, EasyFind finds files of all types, not just the types I specified. Without the ability to limit the search to specific file types, this promising app isn't that useful to me. There's no built-in help, so maybe I'm missing something obvious. (Version 4.0)

NICO235 I love this app too, spotlight is disabled and this is all I'm using. I can't live without it. So, just saw the new 4.0 version pop up and was rejoicing. Alas, there are a few things that need polish. My biggest gripe is with the columns. Why are they not all resizable? Especially the date ones, which are also ugly since the date inside is not justified. Also, I would like the resizing to work like in the finder, with short dates or day of the week when space permit, thank you very much. :) In the meantime, please let us hide them, a command-J kind of thing would be nice, and yes, I have noticed that I can always drag them at the far right of the window and resize the window to hide them, but frankly, this is lame. Also, the 'kind' column is way too wide, it doesn't need to display more than 4 letters and some comma. Make it resizable too. Would it be possible to display the size in MB, GB also please? Showing everything in kb is sooo 1990 :) I'm not so sure I like having the 'search for' and stuff thing on the left instead of on the top, but I might just get used to it. Anyway, awesome app, and thanks for giving it for free. (Version 4.0)

CAPS I've been using this product for several years, now. Ever since it once came bundled with Path Finder. For me, it's one of those What would I do without it? products. I've tried almost every search enging on the market, including Spotlight, and they are all more complicated than they need to be and slower than they should. EasyFind is simple--the simplest interface of all and amazingly fast. One of its best feature is that it displays each result as it is found, in a growing list. I don't need it often, but when I do, nothing else will do. (Version 4.0)

It's always found EVERY last file and has never ever given me the slightest bit of trouble, and I've been using it for quite a while, now. I've found it totally reliable and totally efficient. I couldn't be more pleased with it. If one has any problem with EasyFind or feels the need for an improvement, let's hear it....and, more importantly, let the developers hear it. POWERSCAPE Thank you very much for EasyFind. Spotlight gives me headache which indexing my hard drives nearly 1 or more days. I've got Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.9(built 8P135),700MhzG4,768sdram, and 4 external hard disk. More than 1 terabyte hard disk space. However, Spotlight can't find my searches quickly just only from internal 250GB hard disk. It always takes 10 minutes. By the way Easyfind can do it same search less than 1 minute. I never find my searches from spotlight normally. When I mount one of my external hard disk, Spotlight start indexing it for several hours. Again, spotlight never find my file in external drive before indexing finish. CPU processor usage from spotlight is too much which is very heavy application. So, effecting other applications performance. Lastly, I HATE SPOTLIGHT... Shame on you APPLE ! ! ! (Version 3.9)

HENRIKTEKNIK I like it! But, I'd wish for the following features/improvements: - Global hotkey in Finder to bring it up (possibility of taking over Command-F for instance). - Possibility to drop a folder on the program icon, in order to directly specify that folder as a place to perform a search within. - The icon! First, let me say that this is just a cosmetic issue (and I hate to sound sceptical), but it could benefit of some extra spice to it. (Version 3.9)

AIKOUSHA I look forward to using this, since I had to move over to Tiger. Spotlight is the biggest piece of crap in the Mac System, It doesn't pay attention to view options which is MANDATORY! I need to see the size of files in most of my business searches. I don't need to see all those types of documents, when all I am looking at are a couple of movie types or video compression logs (and you can't turn them off sporadically in Spotlight). Spotlight gets bogged down while you are typing in your find (ack, who though that would be good?). And worse Spotlight is broken! On more than 30 occasions it couldn't find files I knew were there. And after searching through thousands of files to test each one, I actually launched spotlight while LOOKING AT THE FILES I tasked Spotlight to. Spotlight also manages to forget the specific places I need to look (panther never did). If someone has a way of running the old search (from panther) or even a function enabled version, let me know, my work pace has slowed because of Spotlight. (Version 3.9)

BCWINTERS I absolutely can't bear the way Spotlight chugs the hard drive on my PowerBook or the way it often gives me thirty seconds of the evil rainbow beach ball just to do a filename search (which randomly seems to omit files--today it won't find Chaparral in my "C" fonts folder but has no problem searching the "D"s!). In desperation, I downloaded EasyFind, launched it, and ran a search. Once I had the columns resized to my liking, it got the job done and found what I needed in just a few seconds. It felt like being in Panther again. Color me pleased! I haven't put it through all the paces yet but so far it's exactly what I need--fast, accurate filename search which Apple seems inexplicably unable to provide. (Version 3.8.1)

OXOLYT This software could use a redesign of it's user interface and the way it is used. Neither can one drag folders that should be searched on the application window or icon - they have to be selected from a menu and/or via file selector dialog, which is 1990-style - nor does the checkbox "Scan all files" really enable all files for searching. It only enables searching for all the file types listed in the type fields in the window drawer. How does EF really search all files? This seems impossible. The help menu is existing but doesn't activate any help. I give it some points since it is helpful in plugging the holes Spotlight has in it's current form. (Version 3.8.1)

ANONYMOUS IMHO Easy Find is useful to find system files, to delete hiden preferences; files Spotlight and Find... can't find! These files are in English. For my files I use Find and it works pretty well. No need to use the slowest EasyFind. EasyFind rules anyway: it adds what Apple makes impossible to do with the "best OS in the universe"; best except for finding a file (even the crappiest version of Windows can do that). JEREMIAH ISSACH This piece of soft is nice, but seems to have a big shortcoming for a great bunch of users, namely being unable to properly search localised versions of MacOSX other than English. Eg., the Movies folder inside your user's folder is called Películas in Spanish - if you're running MacOS X in Spanish and want EasyFind to find this folder, it will simply return no match. You've got to know/guess it's got to be named Movies in English and then carry out a search for "Movies" for EasyFound to find it. It's the same with any non-English localised version of the system. So, if I were an user running a non-English version of MacOS X, I'm afraid I'd give it simply 1 star... (Version 3.8)

Simple as that. And if you turn it on and search for "the" or "mail" you'll get 10000 useless results because it also searches WHITIN files. Apple, what have you done?? This is like using Windows. Although not as fast as Apple Find and no option to search multiple disks this free utility can search inside packages as well. If you use Tiger it is a must have, for older Mac OS X versions it is very handy to search inside packages. Great work! (Version 3.4)

Using "All words" search for "Easy find" works though... I assume the operators option needs work and currently unpredictable. It would be nice to be able tomatch wildcards with operators... Thank you for the freeware (Version 3.4)

ANONYMOUS I have liked EasyFind for some time. It has occassionally found things that the OS misses. Unfortunately EasyFind 3.4 does not work. After installing, launching, and loging out/in, it still fails to do anything. I have overwritten my previous version to boot! I am anxious to get the next fix. (Version 3.4)

HEDGEHOG I just love the feature that it lets you search inside packages. (Version 3.4)

HEDGEHOG What's wrong with 3.4? Shortly flashes in the dock but doesn't start. No probs with previous versions. I hope this can be fixed as I really like this app. (Version 3.4)

MARC While this application works quite well - if not quickly; it will be rendered obsolete by the release of Tiger (OS X 10.4) I have used the Developer's Release of Tiger and the built-in "Spotlight" feature alone is worth the price of the upgrade! It will INSTANTLY find what you want AS YOU TYPE the characters AND then display them neatly sorted into text, applications, url's, email, .jpg's, folders etc. (Version 3.3.1)

VIVALDI EasyFind just keeps getting better, as does its companion product DevonNote. With EasyFind as a freebie, the two together provide a low-cost environment for total text control. I should know, because I have been using the combination to clean up a years-long accumulation of fiction notes and drafts. EasyFind does what it says, making it easy to feed the right notes into the right place in DevonNotes (or any other text organizer, for that matter). Vielen, vielen Danke, hr. Grünenberg! ANONYMOUS Thanks, Devon, but why not follow Apple guidelines and put EasyFind's folder in ~/Library/Application Support/EasyFind rather than the non-standard ~/Library/EasyFind. Ugh. Of course, Apple breaks its own guidelines constantly as well, I guess. (Version 3.3)

DAVIDLASKA I was lucky to see it,s true value since had tried so many find file apps. This one earned a spot in the dock. I wish for it to search all my volumes someday. (Version 3.1)

JACOBC This is the only "text find" software that has found all occurances of text in any type of file, that I have tried. Nothing else has worked 100% in OS X. I guess some of the best things in life are truly free. Thank you, Devon. (Version 2.8.1)

MARCO I'm just wondering if there is any chance that there would be possible to select several search places at once, maybe in ver. 2.9. (Version 2.8.1)

ARKHAM Much better. But if DevonThink is absent of the machine, the corresponding menu should be grayed out of simply absent too. (Version 2.8.1)

ARKHAM I can't beleive this is a release, not a beta. Window fails to redraw, clicking on a column won't sort, quits for nothing. Bad. (Version 2.8)
