AVIDMCUSER Agreed! Rogue Amoeba Rocks! I have purchased Audio Hijack Pro as well as Nicecast. Both very useful with many great features and superbly crafted. Although I am still having some issues with Snow Leopard 10.6.1 with various apps, I am hoping an update from Apple will resolve any crackeling I am getting through 'pitch' filter using external iSight mic input. Just curious, this update is listed for the 21 Oct. but I have had this version for some time now self updated. Is it a different build? (Version 2.9.5)

LEONCAHUN On my MBP, OS X 10.5.7, the updated Soundflower 1.5.1 kext (Kernel Extension, System Extension), which comes with AHP 2.9.3, did not install successfully; after the first restart the OS claimed that the kext was disabled and had to be de-, or re-installed. I de-installed. Apparently, there is a compatibility issue with Soundflower 1.5.1 and, at least, 10.5.7. Earlier versions of Soundflower did not trouble my OS installation. YMMV. (Version 2.9.3)

STEVEN GOODHEART Huzzah! Full Snow Leopard compatibility and Instant Hijacking is back! This is one my favorite programs, and one of its simplest built-in features -- the 10-Band EQ that you can add to any program you hijack -- adds so much richness and depth to the the music I play in iTunes, or from LastFM in my browser. YMMV, but I found AudioHijack's built-in EQ (which has pre-sets) to be every bit as good as SRS iWow iTunes audio enhancer plug-in and it has much less of a performance hit. This is a five-star program with excellent tech support and at a great price. Can't recommend it enough. (Version 2.9.3)

JOHN VERITY This is a superb program, always rock-solid and full of features and flexibility. My only complaint is that its supplier does not provide enough information about how to use all those features. I am thinking primarily of the many audio effects and filters that come with the program, or that can be obtained elsewhere. Some of these, like gain and reverb, are self-explanatory, but others - Side Chain Limiter? RogerBeep? - are mystifying to some of us. Several effects have 3, 4, even a dozen parameters that can be adjusted, but there's no advice or help provided about where these effects might prove useful or how to use the parameters most effectively. Yes, I can imagine there are experienced audio engineers and recording enthusiasts who "get" these effects at first glance, but the rest of us can only diddle and diddle again and hope for the best. Or, as I do, ignore most of the effects. A short, well-written primer on audio processing, or whatever the proper term is, would be most appreciated. Rogue Amoeba's companion program, the Fission audio editor, is another gem - clean interface, able to handle the largest (well, my largest) files, stable. Highly recommended. (Version 2.9.2)

DANIEL PAGE Excellent program. Very easy to use, and good feature set. Ability to use AU effects is great, I can run a mastering plugin in realtime to get the levels nice and high. I use the program to record my student's guitar lessons, and then I email them the file right after the lesson. Using AAC encoding to 16kbps mono, I have manageable file sizes, plus using the AU effects I can get excellent compressed audio quality. If I screw up, accidentaly recording too long, I can click a button to open the file in an audio editor (for me, Fission), to edit the file and get it right. Rogue Amoeba make some of the most useful little audio applications out there. As I understand, the big competing program is Wiretap Studio. That is a good program too, but I feel that Audio Hijack is a little bit more lightweight, and very useful for when you need to have the program encode and record everything in realtime. You would want wiretap studio if you wanted to be able to record a "dry" version, which you could edit later. That could certainly be useful in certain cases, but for my needs, I set up an Audio Hijack preset with all the effect settings just right, and then I don't need to edit anything after the fact, and the file can be in my student's email inbox before they get home from their lesson. Really priceless stuff! (Version 2.9.1)

EMRYS0821 "This is a known issue. Due to limitations in OS X and some hardware, AHP currently needs to prevent screen sleep to ensure proper recording. If it's possible with your computer and screen, you may be able to dim the screen manually while you're recording, although this is certainly not ideal." http://www.rogueamoeba.com/forum/ubb/Forum2/HTML/000950.html I fully understand where you are coming from, I don't like knowing that my PM with a 23" Apple screen is always "on" when I'm at work and my system is recording internet radio shows. ANONYMOUS About the review stating one can do this with $3.00 worth of mini plug: Audio Hijack is indespensible in monents when you least expect it. I use it constantly, including occasionally for recording from the built in mic jack on my tower. I always hear the argument "why not run mini-plug cables out and back in to your computer." That is a very poor choice if you care about the quality. Audio Hijack is keeping it digital, so you aren't loosing anything beyond what is lost when you convert the mp3 or whatever you are recording to AAC, or whatever your AH output format is. That is to say, converting betqween formats messes up the sound a little each time, adding a digital to analogue, then analogue back to digital conversions into the picture is kind of rediculous from any and audio fidelity point of view. J MICHAEL PINC I've only read page description, but I can't see paying for something that I can do equaly well with a $3 plug from audio out to the mic plug and Audacity, which is free (heck, it's open source!). I've recoreded audio from BBC4 with it, but I could just as easily record from any audio source with it and it's totally free, minus the cost of the cable. It also comes with a suite of audio filters and effects so you can tweak the output to your satisfaction, and it can output to mp3 or wav or oog or whatever you need. If you need an AAC just import it to iTunes and convert. Just a suggestion. (Version 2.5.1)

ANONYMOUS Dude, why don't you actually take it for a spin before you assume that you can do everything it does with Audacity. Also notice the "Pro" in the title. The regular version is cheaper and STILL does more than your suggestion. This records (and mutes) audio _per_ application. Record BBC4 while having it muted and listening to iTunes, while not worrying about having sound effects from other Applications interfering with the application. Have it record _to_ AAC on the fly (no conversions to worry about later, no worrying about the 2 hour AIFF taking up a ton of space). Record and mix tracks live, add effects live, etc. etc. Look before you leap to conclusions. (Version 2.5.5)

BCG This is one of the few Mac apps that I have tried and found worth keeping on my system (and buying!). I record live shows to MiniDisc, and then transfer to my ibook using a digital optical adapter. BY FAR, this app does the best job of recording the audio to disk. Other apps are cumbersome, lack features I need, or are unstable... I've tried them all. AHP is clearly the best, plus it lets me use a multitude of free plugin formats to process the audio WHILE it's recording. No more need to post-process (as much)!!! LECHEROUS J this is a major jump from audio hijack pro 1. seriously, there isn't even competition for this app. it's one of only a handful of apps that does what it does, and does it well enough that the competition might as well give up. before i bought ahp1, i used wiretap. the thrice daily kernel panics were a bit much to deal with. ahp1 (and 2) on the other hand, have never crashed on me. and it's easy as hell to use. if you can use itunes, you can use ahp2. sure, there are more advanced features, but it's very apple-like in that the complexity is only there if you want it to be. a note to the APE-haters: APE isn't unstable at all. in fact, i bet you're running numerous apps as we speak that actually do have stability problems. but APE isn't one of them. in fact, audio hijack pro does NOT require APE. it only uses APE if you choose to use it. APE just allows you to hijack currently running apps without having to restart the apps. so if APE is scaring you away, don't let it - it's not required. anyway, it gets 5 stars from me all around. ANONYMOUS hrm... it seems to me that WireTap has everything you'd need to record audio from DVDs, games, etc. The only thing it doesn't do that Audio Hijack does is be able to capture the output of just one app (no big deal, while I'm recording something, I just turn other sounds off), and add sound effects to the audio (if I wanted that, I'd do it in my sound editing app when I'm editing/mixing it) It's true that Audio Hijack has more features, but WireTap is an extremely useful program, and it is free. Dismissing it as a "tech demo" makes me wonder if you've used it. (Version 1.2.4)

ANONYMOUS KARMA Audio Hijack Pro is a great tool which does a lot of powerful things, and at a price that can't be beat by any comparable pro audio tool. If you don't need what it does then I would suggest AudioHijack, which provides app-specific recording at half the price. Don't compare AH or AHP to WireTap; WireTap is just a free tech demo for Snapz Pro that doesn't include any of the features you'd want to actually record music, games, DVDs, or other sounds. And WireTap is a kernel extension, which means that it may break any time Apple updates the OS, and could kernel panic your system. AHP is still the best and only tool for audio enhancement on OS X. A teaser program from Ambrosia isn't in the same league and isn't worth giving AHP three stars over. (Version 1.2.4)

ANONYMOUS While Audio Hijack Pro has some nice features, it also has a lot of fluff -- and it costs $30. My suggestion is just to use the (free) WireTap program from Ambrosia, and do your post processing in your favorite sound editing application. Not only is WireTap completely free, but it also has fewer conflicts/bugs than Audio Hijack Pro does... and no APE!! (Version 1.2.4)

ANONYMOUS The real power of this program is its "Pipe Dream" plugin. I use it with lame and perl to stream the output of MegaSeg to my icecast server. (Version 1.2.3)

INVINCIBLE If you want to burn MP3 songs on a CD but don't have an equalizer in your car deck, stereo, etc, this is the app to get. (Version 1.2.3)

ANONYMOUS this is the perfect app if you own Audible .aa files and want to play them on an MP3 player that doesn't support that format. you can have AHP hijack iTunes audio specifically for that file and create multiple MP3s at set sizes (like 'start a new file every 30 minutes or 15 Mb, etc.) VERY COOL. the only drawback is that it's 1x so a 7 hour audio book takes 7 hours to convert - but there is no alternative. JOETAXPAYER If you are looking to cature streaming audio from iTunes, RealPlayer, (or off your stereo), this is the software you want. It will capture the audio directly from the application and save it in your choice of file options. There's a timer feature, so you can record a stream of a radio show you know will be on in the future. It can save the MP3/AIFF, etc files as a size you choose, so you can use your player to find the segment you want. $30? I saved more than that in the value of my time using this product without having to stay near my computer. (Version 1.1)

DAVE First piece of shareware I bought 15 minutes after trying out. I'm looking forward to many late nights tinkering with AHP. (Version 1.1)
