STORMY1083  Hi,

This plugin worked for as long as I have had it installed. As far as I can tell the information is correct in the mail app, but after doing a routine update it stopped. It gives me a message saying it is forbidden to connect to my hotmail account. This happened about 3 or 4 days ago.

I anyone else experiencing this problem? How do I fix it? I can't say much other than It was updated, restarted and turned off for the night. The next morning it wouldn't connect. My other mail accounts are working just fine.

Help is needed and very appreciated.

ANONYMOUS  Many thanks to Daniel for maintaining this freeware for us for so long! He can finally let it rest, because the plugin is no longer necessary.

Microsoft has finally, at long last, made POP3 access available for all hotmail accounts (even free ones). Instructions can be found at http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20090407112314693

JAYYOO  Hi, Im having trouble installing this application. I cant seem to find

HTTPMail in picking acccount type. I only have POP, IMAP, and Exchange listed.

I tried to close my mac mail and relaunch after installing (the application said i installed successfully).

What am i doing wrong? I know you must get tonnes of emails, but im a little slow. Do I also have to upgrade to hotmail plus?

I am running with Mac OS 10.5.6

Thanks.

AKANICO  Plug is working without any problem on 10.5.6 and installation is as simple as double clicking the icon.

Only thing that bothers me is not being able to delete messages on the server, tried to 'erase deleted messages' like it is told in the FAQ but they keep coming back when syncing with hotmail account.

Nice to get the mails and everything but too bad can't delete them.

Useless to me for that matter...

TIMOTHY SMITH  from sourceforge

As of June 30th 2008, my plugin will cease to function as Microsoft has decided to terminate HTTPMail (also known as WebDav) protocol access. They have replaced this protocol has been replaced by a new one called DeltaSync. Unfortunately DeltaSync is undocumented and uses non-standard compression and encryption of message data. Until these issues can be resolved there is nothing I can do to fix my plugin.

If you have a Hotmail Plus account you should still be able to access your mail using the POP3 protocol. The details for setting up POP3 access is as follows.

Incoming mail server: pop3.live.com (port 995)

Outgoing mail server: smtp.live.com (port 25)

Username: your full hotmail email address

NOTE: the outgoing mail server requires authentication

BOCABOY  I've used this plug-in for about a year and have suddenly encountered a problem where none of my e-mail is readable. The only thing I see are the headers but there is no message content.

Additionally, the "synchronize" command doesn't seem to behave the way you might think. It only seems to synchronize Inbox, Deleted Items and Sent Items. Subfolders are ignored.

I have asked for help twice on these issues from the developer but have gotten no response.

D|DUMOND  Tried this for the first time and it gives me an error telling me I need a subscription!

I've had my hotmail account for over 10 years now and when I got to upgrade to Hotmail Plus (Windows Live™

?), it brings me to my inbox which means I must already have it.

I know Hotmail did this thing awhile back where you had to start paying to access your mail through an email client... Is that still the case?

Does everyone whom this works for, do you all have a paid subscription through Hotmail?

There no mention about having to have a paid subscription in the documentation if this is the case.

If anyone has any insight on this could you please let me know?

Thanks!

DAWG4GSUS  First, I'd like to thank and complement the developer. I love having this plug-in!

Just a warning to those on the Intel Macs...this plug-in will eat a lot of RAM in it's current release. I have 1 gig of RAM and I was running tortuously slow.

Normally, I leave my Hotmail accounts online all of the time. Now, I simply take the Hotmail accounts "offline" until I want to devote a few minutes to downloading those emails into Mail. While Hotmail is "offline" everything is back to normal (near blazing) speed!

DEEDAS  Everything was working perfect until 10.4.7 came along. The Mail app just hangs after start up, sometimes it'll let me scroll up and down but that's about all I can do. I don't have any other plug-ins for Mail so I don't think I'm being too quick to point the finger at this plug-in.

I'm on a 1.5ghz PB G4, anyone else having this problem? I'm going to go use one of my webmail accounts to write an email to the developer inquiring about this problem. I should have probably done that first, oh well. At least you all know that there might be a problem when upgrading to 10.4.7 and should proceed with caution.

It uses a lot RAM this way, and is somewhat slower, but the new Intel Macs are fast enough that if you've enought RAM, it works just fine, Except:

However, they used to offer this service for free, so when the conditions changed, anyone who had used this feature was allowed to keep it for free.

Rather reasonable I think. So basically, if you want non-webmail access to a new account, go with a proper provider, not Hotmail.

ALKSDFJ  If you are having this error: mail doesn't load page

automatically, or you lost hotmail account, or mail.app stalls when finding mail, or won't quit, do this

find this file: person.djlp.mail.plist

usually in: Library/preferences/person.djlp.mail.plist

open file with text editor, and change this line from:

(key)Check For Updates(/key)(true/)

To:

(key)Check For Updates(/key)(false/)

then save.

restart mail.app. this should fix your problem.

Then make sure automatically check for updates is not checked in the preferences. If Daniel's server is down, this will cause the httpmail app to hang because it's looking for the update. Then you can't quit or change preferences etc.

MOD: Please delete other versions of this tip, as important parts of the code were deleted.

MAUIWILLIE  I have been running the HTTPMAIL plugin for about 2 years now. When I went to Tiger, I had to update the release of HTTPMAIL.

There is one major problem that I have with the product. Contrary to some of the writeups on this product, I cannot seem to get the Email from an HTTPMAIL account to go through my MAIL 2.0 filters. The rules work for mail in my POP3 accounts, but do not trigger when the mail is from my Httpmail accounts. Because of this, the only Spam control that I have is via the Hotmail Spam software which is very limited in it's capability. Hotmail cannot handle Chinese characters in the Subject line for SPAM. Is one example of why Hotmail spam software is limited.

ANONYMOUS  I'm still using version 1.42d with osx 10.3.9 and it works fine for me. This is with hotmail accounts i created long ago. Recently i tried the plugin with a new created account, it doesn't work. I'd say the dev does a great job and this thing does the best it can. Just that M$ had to mess it up.

MICROSOFT SUCK$  Seems to be Micro$oft has decided that hotmail or old msn accounts are no longer free (for "outlook" users) is it safe to assume this still leaves a potential work around if this is coded as entourage? too bad, M$ just wants to flood us with more advertising.

I installed the plug-in and configured everything to work correctly, clicked the "Get Mail" button and every account works except the hotmail account. I clicked the error button and received a message saying that I needed to upgrade my account to use Outlook or Outlook Express, screw hotmail.

ANONYMOUS  Ok, I cured this, deselect 'Store Draft Messages on the server.' if you are having this trouble.

Unfortunately for me Tiger Mail did quite a bit to screw up all my inboxes, I even have an inbox called '/' for some reason (which unfolds to /Users/Me/Library/Mail...please god don't tell me that is feature by Appe) and that some of the settings of httpmail have changed too when I reinstalled it.

I think it is great what this guy is doing with httpmail and it is a really appreciated , unlike Apple who launched a total dogs dinner of a mess with Tiger Mail (which for my sanity I have to patch with Mail Stamps)

ANONYMOUS  Although the new httpmail works in 10.4.1 (and I'm so glad it does) there is a problem which seems to occur now and again where it keeps downloading the same messages from a hotmail account as if they are unread. This isn't just a Tiger thing it happened in Panther too. I couldn't reproduce it just now, but sometimes between mail sessions, say you download your hotmail, then quit mail, then later on restart mail it will sometimes download all your hotmail emails again not just the new ones.

Anyway thanks for keeping this great app up to date

ANONYMOUS  1.45 worked great for me. No problems whatsoever, that is, until I absently upgraded to OS 10.4.1, which had major mail changes (so it seems), and that once again disabled the plugin bundle. I tried reinstalling with no success. Anyway, no big deal I'll just keep checking mail in Panther until more bugs get worked out.

I had to delete person.djlp.mail.plist for it to work (I installed Tiger over Panther), then had to delete "Envelope Index" in the Mail folder in order to retrtive the older messages I had. Glad to see that this update now honors the offline/online status when checking for new email. I had some issues adding two accounts (Hotmail + MSN). Isn't this possible? ANONYMOUS  I just upgraded to Tiger, and when I opened Mail all of my saved mail folders were empty. Thanks to this site, I figured out why: the incompatibility of httpmail for Panther with Mail for Tiger. I did a search for httpmail, which turned up the folder "httpmail_panther.mailbundle"

I then snatched the folder and put it on my desktop.

When I rebooted Mail, all of my saved mail was back!

We will just have to wait for a Tiger update to httpmail for now.

DJSPOOK23  i have been using this great app for awhile now and like another poster said will get rid of my "microsoft" email accounts when this no longer works.

On a different note - need a little help = have been using panther 10.3.7 for a while now with httpmail 1.42 with no problems until now - i was trying to add another hotmail account into mail in the prefs area and couldnt get it to work - would come up on mail screen with triangle offline icon - so my 1st question is can this app be used to grab multiple hotmail accounts?

my second question relates to the fact that mail will not respond anymore - someone tell me what i have stuffed up please lol - it hangs on fetching new mail and has to be force quit - this is without the second hotmail account in the prefs - any help would be great before i completely destroy my ibook lol

thanks in advance

ANONYMOUS  This has been become a bit of a muddle.

About a week or 2 ago M$ made some fundemental change to how these accounts are accessed from mail clients and this was reflected in a new version of httpmail.

Now about 2 days ago M$ have silently stopped it working altogether which is contraty to their original announcment about 'phasing it out in 2005' seems they have just killed it outright.

Thanks a lot M$. Not

There is a real need now for a standalone app that can present the user with a regular mail-client-like layout to their free hotmail account. Of course it would use regular http protocol and for all intents and purposes would appear to hotmail to be a web browser. It would literally have to parse the html pages, could be horribly fiddly seeing as hotmail web interface is loaded with javascript and other junk but I am sure it could be done. If my coding skills were up to it I would give it a go.

ANONYMOUS  this is a great app. BUT few days ago Hotmail discontinued support for application like mail.app accsess to server , even from Entourage it asks you to sign up for Premium Service 19$/mo (20MB) in order to send and receive mail in your Entourage. they I think honor only old hotmail accounts....another great reason to stop using Microsoft.

STEVE  I have been using httpmail to access my hotmail account mostly as an homage to one of my first email accounts. Free email accounts are going the way of the dodo, and free POP accounts are almost non-existant now. If Microsoft blocks Hotmail, that will just be the final death knoll for my poor, pathetic 2mb email account. I recently signed up for a 2 month trial of .mac, and am very happy about it, despite the fact that in about a month I'm going to have to pay for it. ($8.33/month, $100/year). For Mac users, .Mac is indespensible. iDisk, Homepage, chat, iCards, iSync and all the other stuff it does is quickly becoming worth the cost to me. So long Microsoft Hotmail!

ANONYMOUS  I agree with the last post, is there anything to stop a third party just spoofing what is required to make it seem like the login happened over a web browser? Is that what httpmail already does ?

2ndly httpmail has stopped working for me about 2 days ago for unknown reasons. I can no longer send mail from any account which fails in Mail with:

"Sending Message Content to the server failed"

Everything was working fine a couple of days ago.

My hotmail account boxes are also grey out in mail..

EGGMAN  The lack of service for linking to Outlook/OE only applies to new users right now - they're planning on discontinuing the service to O/OE for everyone by next April.

Color me naive, but are we sure that this is going to affect httpmail?

Great plugin, by the way. If it IS the case that Micro$quash is nixing httpmail's access as well, that's too bad. I feel dirty every time I go to the MSN/Hotmail website, and this program keeps me halfways-squeaky clean.

My only concern is a slightly convoluted deinstall proceedure as described by the author. And I'm wondering if it would be neccessary to deinstall if updating the Mail app in the future (knowing how flaky and jittery recent 10.3.x updates have been)

DANA  This is a great solution to anyone who wants to use the Panther Mail app with MSN or Hotmail. I have used this for well over a year now and have throughly tested it's ability. It is the only program of it's kind that I know of.

My advice for hotmail users also using panther mail, is to go into your hotmail prefrences and turn off all your junk mail filters. This allows the mail app to do the junk mail sorting instead of hotmail, which has much better filters, etc.

Also have it keep all your email locally on your hardrive, as it will keep your hotmail account from filling up, and you can then view it even when your not connected to the internet.

Last but not least remember: hotmail has a limit as to the size of emails you can send out on their server for their free accounts. So don't send attachments over the limit set by hotmail, as the mail app will say it sent it, and it will not be sent. This little problem screwed me over wonderfully with some school powerpoint presentations.......

JOEL NELSON  Works very well with Mail on 10.3.2; gives Hotmail/MSN users another option on Mac OS X. Simply install it using the installer package, follow the directions, and you will be using your MSN or Hotmail account with Mail in minutes. You can set HTTPmail to delete mail from the Hotmail server after downloading it, leave messages but mark them as read, or do nothing to the messages on the server.

ANONYMOUS  This is a great little application, but it also keeps freezing up Mail. With the plug-in installed, when you launch Mail, neither window (In box, New message) shows up. Oh well, just a little hassle, ok. It works fine for inloading your Hotmail mail -- I keep it on Manual mode so it doesn't get too crowded. But when I'm completely finished with Mail, you have to do the three-fingered salute to get it to quit. Luckily, I came up with a fix. I simply keep the http-mail-panther bundle out of the bundles folder, until I need to retrieve my Hotmail. I hope this helps some other users. With a little persistence (and bug fixes), this may indeed prove to be a killer ap. And I look forward to future editions.

WAKEUP!  Can you not see on this page that is clearly states: "Requirements:

Mac OS X 10.3 or later, Hotmail account."

It is NOT supposed to work on anything other than Mac OS X 10.3 or later.

JESSICA  I love httpmail, but recently it freezes my computer whenever I turn it on. I then have to go to safe mode and fix whatever it did to my computer. Any ideas on why it's doing this??? i want to use mail again!

FLARCH  GOT MY HTTP MAIL ACCOUNTS WORKING!

There's a bit of a trick to it if you want to avoid getting the INVALID DIRECTORY error.

After entering the information under the 'account info', i went straight to the 'Advanced' tab, then to the 'Special mailboxes tab'.

I think the real trick is to enter the 'account information' and then move on, allowing the account to save, at which time ~/Library/Mail will automatically be entered into the path blank.

If you want the account to be stored in your Mail directory, DO NOT fiddle with the 'Advanced' information until the account has saved once successfully.

Hope that works.

FLARCH  I've used this for ages, but in the panther version, in addition to the problem described by sylvestermcmonkey below, i ran across another uglier one.

I have my main POP mail account, and one HTTP (hotmail) account all set up. When i try to create a second hotmail account i get the following nasty message when trying to save the information:

Invalid Directory

The account path /Users/Flarch/Library/Mail is already being used by the account "On My Mac"

--------

It won't allow me to leave the prefs dialog unless i choose another path, but all my mailboxes and prior information for all 3 accounts is, and should be, stored in that directory.

The path in the box for the first hotmail account is simply ~/library/mail and that box won't allow typing!

Tried some different things, but just ended up getting no mailboxes or mail listed for additional hotmail accounts.

BONTFAEN  Similar Mail Preferences problem experienced with 1.31 (using Panther) where the Outgoing Mail Serviver entry is reset to 'none' on quitting preferences and saving changes. All the other amended fields are retained except the Outgoing Mail Server. I didn't experience a long delay loading Mail, as suggested may happen.

FLARCH  That is inconsequential. Outgoing mail server is NOT needed with HTTP mail.

I usually set it to NONE to begin with.

SYLVESTERMCMONKEY  httpmail has been updated for Panther. Works fine for retrieving mail, haven't tried it for sending through the hotmail server. However, I get the following message when retrieving mail:

"The mailbox “~/Library/Mail/HTTPMail-johngalt@hotmail.com/Inbox.mbox” is currently locked by “John” on host “Johns-Powerbook.local”. If you open a mailbox that already is in use, you may damage its contents."

with buttons "open read-only", "quit" and "open". If I select "open read-only" everything appears to download fine. But there's no way to get rid of this annoying message. Anyone?
