SHORTIEROCK I just bought office 2004. I am having a hard time installing MSN messenger. It keeps saying there are newer versions available. LUCLUV Depends on what Mac OS you are running. If you are using MAc OS 9.2.2 or lower, you cannot use what you've downloaded. The .dmg file extention is a disk image file (installer) that you can only open and run in Mac OS X. MS quit supporting Mac OS 9.2.2 (and lower) a long time ago. Before getting my new Intel iMac, I was using this Mac Messenger instead of Micro$oft's own client because theirs always gave me problems like those described in other posts here.

MACUPDATE ADMIN After downloading Mac Messenger, you should have a file on your desktop that is labelled: If it has a .txt suffix after the .sit suffix, remove the .txt suffix. Then you can open the file/install the software.

ZEBLACKCAT Welln what can i say, I MSN Messenger for mac wich works fine for me and using Mac Messenger would be degrading, but as been mentioned for Mac Classic as below Mac OSX than it's indeed a very nice use since there's not much other choice. If you do have Mac OSX this doesn't adds anything, so if that's where you are aiming at I would've said it's better to practice between eachother untill all the bugs are fixed and you got atleast everything what the mac version of MSN messenger can before releasing it. But it's freeware, it's also for below Mac OSX, so it's very nice for what it is. Nice design and goodluck in the future with future versions or projects.

MARIUS_TH Adium isn't Classic Compatible, Mac Messenger is, which is probably it's main reason of excistance you aren't forced to use it on OS X, but if you're on Classic there isn't much of another choice except for Mac Messenger if you still want to be able to connect to the MSN Network.

ANONYMOUS I posted the previous troubleshooting message. In follow-up, I downloaded and installed MSN Messenger to compare. MSN messenger gave me the same 14 junk mail message as this did, so that at least is an MSN/Hotmail problem and not a Mac Messenger one. I deleted the MSN and kept the Mac Messenger, although I may return to the previous MM 3.5 as you suggested.

ANONYMOUS I've been using Mac Messenger through a few versions now with varying success. I downloaded and installed this new v.3.5.3. I tried using the sprocket-looking button's menu to quit the app and got this error message: An exception of class OutOfBoundsException was not handled. Application must shutdown. I also cannot get it to sign in automatically. I select my account in preferences, but when I click to close the preferences window, the designated account de-selects and the window stays open until I click to close it again. In other words, I cannot select my account and get the sign-in option to accept it. This wasn't a problem with the last few versions. I've also been having a problem with the mail notification insisting that I have 14 messages in my junk mail when it is empty. This problem has been with me through the last 2 or 3 versions. I've tried deleting my preferences to no avail.

QUICKBISCUIT Can anyone help? I am trying to run Mac Messenger on a G4 running OS 9.1. The reason I don't want to upgrade to 9.2.2 is that it causes Outlook Express 4.5 to crash. I really don't like Outlook Express 5.0 so I am sticking to 0S 9.1. When I try to sign in with Mac Messenger versions 3 to 3.5 , the progress bar sticks and displays message 'You are disconnected from the MSN network...', this is very similar to what happens when I try to log-in on MSN messenger but I gather that Microsoft no-longer support it? I am using Internet Explorer 5.0 (though not at the same time)with Tool tips turned off. I deleted the preferences and re-built my desktop but still I can't chat with my PC buddies. Can anyone help?

PAIROFHEARTS Quickbiscuit....you have a few security issues with some of your programs. Any mac forum will tell you that outlook express should be upgraded to 5.0.3 and internet explore to 5.1.7 (for OS9.1) these upgrades are a must... Check also that you have CarbonLib 1.6 and TextEncoding Convertor 1.6 installed. Neccessary for MacMessenger 3.5.1....Give this a shot! Throw away all previous versions of MM along with preferences. Download a fresh copy of MM3.5.1. Rebuild desktop. Install new version. Along with other upgrades it should work fine. I use an old Performa with OS9.1 and MM works great. Cheers

QUICKBISCUIT Thanks for replying pairofhearts. I took your advice and upgraded my browser but unless OE 5.0.3 has radically changed I will have to live without its enhanced security features. Anyway, I followed your instructions to the letter. I binned my old versions of Mac Messenger & MSN Messenger along with the preferences. I checked and yes, I do have CarbonLib 1.6 and TextEncoding Convertor 1.6. I downloaded a fresh MM 3.5.1, rebuilt my desktop and installed... same problem persists. I should probably have mentioned that I use a broadband/cable modem plugged into my Ethernet port. Could this be confusing Messenger? I also have Norton Personal Firewall but I have the same problem when this is disabled. There is a dialogue box with an error report that reads "You are disconnected from the MSN Network. and a whole bunch of alphanumeric soup including an http address, I could include this, but wasn't sure what I might be revealing about my system. I read your piece with interest, seems to me that your Hard Drive may have a few issues of its own! Some computers are only as good as they are maintained. You seem to be in an OS rut, its not a bad thing, I was on OS9 for years before I moved on to OS X. First, if you have Norton's use Disk Doctor, or whatever you may have. I have a PowerMac 9500 and a G3 B&W, and maintaine them ever week.

QUICKBISCUIT Must admit I thought this advice was weak. But yeah, my Mac hasn't had much housework done since I transferred the contents of my old PowerMac 6500 HD to my G4 and dumped the lot in a Hard Drive partition till I got around to installing all the apps I only sometimes need. Disk Doctor found 10's of thousands of files with bad modification dates & bundle bits etc. I also tidied up a lot of large files languishing on the desktop into proper directories. Rebuilt the desktop, ditched preferences, Zapped the PRam and Hey Presto! Look at me, I'm chatting! Cheers. Final questions does Mac Messenger only work with .com Hotmail accounts? my .co.uk Hotmail account name doesn't seem to want to sign-in but I think I can live with this. Are there any Instant Messenger clients that have whiteboards?, that would be usefull.

WIM Don't know what goes wrong here, but there is actually nothing changed in comparison with the last version i downloaded at the beginning of january. it states here the new version is from jan 28. the metal button is still in my preferences, the command key for that one is not ; but ,, it doesn't change default fonts if i change those in the preferences, when i start a chat it starts at the bottom of the window and always leaves one line blank between lines - either if they're mine or somelses. i'm on classic (9.1).

STORM I've used Mac Messenger ever since MS kept telling me I needed to upgrade to connect, even after I had just installed their latest available update. This works as well, if not better than the MS product available for those of us still running 9.2.2. My one problem is that ever since updating to the version before Mac Messenger 3.5, I keep getting the decline/accept window every time I launch it. I did not have such a problem with the version before that. It went smoothly into log in. Any clues as to how I can stop the decline/accept window from popping up every time?

ENDYMION Sounds like nobody has actually used MSN Messenger for the Mac. This one is much more Mac-like than the official client, small and quick. I've had no stability problems. It is short on features, but so is MSN's client. At least this one looks and works like a Mac app.

SANJESH Overall its a good messenger. 2. Doesn't slow the performance of your mac as I've noticed that some do. 3. Intergratted to work with your hotmail and other email accounts. But there are issues where yes the chat diologue boxes are fighting with eachother. When your typing a messege to a buddy, a new conversation box will dominate the one you are already typing in (fustrating). Overall its not as well programed as the MSN version, but does carry its pro's opposed to it.

BUNGA Great to see that a majority of you are happy with MacMessenger3. I have been supporting MM3 since before Microslop changed their log in protocols October 2003. Today I've only just discovered, they've actually stopped MSN 2.5 about July this year from what I gather. Well for trouble shooting on MacMessenger3. Either use a different browser other than IE5 or disable tool tips in the preferences. The devoloper is aware of this. If updating from an existing MM3, delete the file Mac Messenger 3 Settings.prfs inside the preferences folder. Classic Users should have CarbonLib1.6 installed Rebuilding your desktop after installation sometimes help. Some Macs may require to stay on MM3.3f and hope an update could resolve any issues mentioned here. Me personally think it's best :)

CECILIA I'm having the exact same problem. I just updated mac messenger and it won't let me sign in. I select to sign in and my account and everything, but the bar which shows the progress of the 'signing in' progress doesn't even move. Since I havent seen any replies or solutions to anyone else's problems its looking doubtful! But if anyone has any idea, please let me know! thanks

I am having the same problem. When starting Mac Messenger 3.5.2b on my iBook with system 9.2, the following error message pops up: "An exception of class NilObjectException was not handled. LOUISE I'm in the middle of downloading Mac Messenger 3.4 this now but from what I've seen of Mac Messenger 3, this is really cool! It's so much better than the old versions that MSN Messenger used to supply for Mac! I never even knew this existed until like a month ago! I would love to see side pictures too but for now, this is fantastic! It does most things that Msn can do.. and more!

DARKSTORM I like this program. Even more, now that a link button to hotmail accounts has been added. That's the only thing I was missing from the Microsoft version. I was using the Microsoft version until it told me I needed to update, and when I downloaded the update, it told me I needed to update. Typical MS junk. JAX I just downloaded Mac Messenger last night. So far it's great, except for my computer crashing. Other then that It actually works better then the msn messenger on my computer. I am currently on OS 9.2. I hope we find a solution for the crashes soon because it can get annoying. So far, so good. It does need more features but for now it will work. :)

SAM Hey, I had that same problem a while ago where the chat boxes did not appear. It drove me absolutely crazy! I don't exactly remember what I did, though. I think I deleted all of the mac messenger files that I had on my computer and downloaded the version again. And if that does not work out, you may have to wait until a new version is developed that works on your computer. Best of luck!

JUAN CARLOS hi, I´m really surprised about what you say, because mac messenger 3.3 is compatible with mac os 8.6 and more (and obviously your operative system that is 9.2.1) I use 9.0 and I was able to download this messenger that is very helpful for me, just try to download this mac messenger, I don´t know why but when I tried to download this messenger by the first time I could not, but I just try again and bingo!, another option for you is that you upgrade your operative system for 9.2.2 which is free, and you can download this upgrade from www.apple.com, and then you can download the original messener from microsoft that is compatible only for 9.2.2 and X

These features in Mac Messenger I am talking about are : when (1).you are able to see when someone opens your message box without typing anything. (2) when someone appears offline, you are still able to see when they have signed out. (3). Get info button allows you to see if the person still has you added to their contact list or not. Do they have these features for regular msn messenger for windows? Can they be downloaded separately? Any advice? Or can the developer of Mac Messenger create one for a windows based computer as well??

I have folllowed the downloads and latest versions since I discovered mac messenger back 4 months ago. One thing that has happen on all the downloads is they make my computer crash. The improvments are great but they keep crashing my system. Also the latest one, some letters somtimes come out as face pictures. ex. when I type the word sometimes it comes out as a face and then ometimes. Some sorta bug there. Anyways, keep up the great work on the messenger.

STRIFER That's easier said than done Cody... rumors say MS MSN for Mac 4 due this summer will support sound and vision and MM will support it with time, but it takes time and effort and this is all freely done in spare time, so give the developer a break. More basic features are more important to MM right now, getting up to par with MSN 6 also means moving emoticons and display pictures. Furthermore the application needs to be polished.

STRIFER ALDEON I've been using MM quite some time and I do my best to contribute to the development anyway I can. The application is carbon, which means it's being used on classic machines too. Originally this application was just meant for older machines to be able to run MSN, but it has became available on OSX too. The looks on OSX are somewhat classic, but it looks cool for classic users. The interface has greatly improved with version 3.2 and once new icons are in it will look even better. More features are comming for sure, but the app was written from the ground up when the new protocol of the MSN Network fussed around with all third party client and official clients (which makes it impossible to chat on MSN with MS MSN if you are under OS Classic 9.2). Give it time and help out to make this application better. We still seriously lack a good MSN Chat Client on Mac... MS MSN for Mac itself is not good, fire/proteus and adium don't focus on MSN enough, so it's not worth using them full time. MM3 is totally focused on MSN which makes it more ideal to use it continuously. MM3 is well on it's way to become a good, but also the one most used single im client after MS MSN for Mac.... a 2 for features because of the lack of them in this version. More features were present in the old version, I guess we'll see most of them back when time comes. Ease of use.. a 4. Feels good. Value... it's free and oes the basic work = 5. I'm rnning OSX 10.3.2 on an iMac and have had no crash at all, so i'm giving it a 4 for now. Can't go higher because I haven't run it for that long.

ZWATUMAKOFIT After MSN went to OS9.2.2 & up is when I decided to try Mac Messenger. Using OS9.2.1, I had no problems whatsoever with the switch-over. All that were on MSN came up on Mac without a hitch. What makes Mac Messenger better is that I can now delete contacts instead of just blocking them! Thumbs Up!

SIMON PETERS I downloaded for use on an iMac running 9:2:2. There are spelling mistakes ("scroll trough") on the desktop, which is always an ominous sign. When I tried to sign in I got an error message saying I could not connect to the MSN network. It then froze my computer, and I needed two restarts to get my machine back to normal working. I think the safest thing to do is to strip it out and junk it. With Yahoo Messenger rock solid, why would one need Mac Messenger? Simon Peters

B this does not seem to be a MS product to me. The rainbow MSN icon is lame and outdated and so is the overall look of the app. Only interesting thing is to be able to log in in ofline mode. It crashed my comp. I dumped it. But as far as I can see it is not a MS version. So before you go complaning to MS maybe you could verify this :)

You said that Messenger is being a pain and re-downloading is still a problem? Are you making sure to trash all of your Messenger files before you re-down load. Some times when you download it again your computer can already source that the files are there and not allow the new down load to overwrite. It's a long shot but it worked for me.

EMAC USER IN ALBERTA I had the same problem, and I solved it by getting Fire, a third party IM client. I know it sounds strange that Microsoft's own client fails to connect to their service, but a generic client works. Nevertheless, this seems to be the case. I assume that there is some kind of bug in the MSN Messenger software for the Mac. I have had no trouble connecting to and chatting with my friends on MSN since I stopped using MSN Messenger.

DAVIDE PAPA Mac 3.0a13 MSN messenger was working great for the last 6 months:On OS 8.6:Classic version never worked,so we clicked the X icon and presto everything was fine...until a few weeks ago...Messenger started to crash,2 or 3 times in a one hour period...within a few days after it was crashing 5 or 6 times per hour...in the last week on usuage it refused to log on all together... Unfortunately Microsoft and Mac are cohorting together ...Microsoft agree's not to support Msn messenger for mac operating below 9.2.2...And Apple is promoting their NEW chat cliet for New Mac's at a price...with coinincidently includes MSN messenger...This type of cohorting is called "scratching each other fleas"...MAC sells more of the new program as frustrated mac users abandon older systems,and Microsoft does not need wasting time supporting Older msn messenger versions...in return Microsoft get to promote and sell "Office works" for Mac operating systems...But I've nearly cracked an alternative way of getting MSN to work on the older versions of Mac...as soon as I fine tune it ..I will inform by the end of the week...It involves dumping the carbon lib 1.6 and replacing it with the older 1.25 version...also have to secure thread for NIL objects which seems to be the main problem for most Msn not working...on older Mac's...stay tumed Also if you can find MSN messenger 2.2 for mac...up to a few weeks ago,this messenger seemed to be working really well...but to date I am unable to find it anywhere on the net.. ANONYMOUS I'm using 9.1 with this latest version of messenger, and find it continually crashes my computer... i'm sometimes able to 'fix' it without restarting everything by simply force quitting messenger, but usually it causes the finder to crash and i have to restart everything. any way to fix this to make messenger more stable?

JUAN CARLOS I had the same problem but it only donwload until 300kb, anyway, as I have virtual pc, I conected to the internet in the windows platform throw virtual pc and finally I could download the full version of macmessenger, of course the download was slowwww but finally I have the only messenger for mac that is able for MacOs below 9.2.2

ANONYMOUS Increase the memory allocation for the app and if you cannot chat just delete the MMsettings file in your prefs folder and way you go

ANONYMOUS Works fine for me on my Power Mac (OS 8.6). Not the greatest programme in the world, but at least I can chat with my friends who have MSN Messenger without having to upgrade or buy a new computer.

ALEXO every time I try to get a conection the soft unexpectedly quit under panther (OS Version: 10.3.1 (Build 7C107)). I do not have even a chance to see it working.

LINS This app is not working right for me. I cannot block or unblock certain contacts or remove them. It won't let me open a chat window when I double click on a contact. And just now it won't launch -- I got an error saying restart my computer. I'm using OS 9.1.
