SYLVAPOLUPOSA  After the big disappointment of iPodRip I tried this one.

And again ... disappointment and even more ... it locked my iPhone three times and eventually I gave up.

Downloading files was extremely slow on my Mac Book Pro but it did not crash like iPodRip did.

The drawer popping out on the right is very buggy and indicates this is made with RealBasic. So no Cocoa support here and willl certainly give problems when running on Snow Leopard.

It also has a major memory leak problem (about 50mb after you quit the program).

Reading the notes it seems the developer tried to warn every user of all sort of problems he can encounter when using iPod Access. A shame really because I good app should work without any danger involved.

iPod Access is not worth a penny for me because of several issues and there are other free applications doing the same, safer AND better.

ANONYMOUS  Sylvapoluposa,

Below are some responses to your comments:

1. iPhone OS 3.0 support was released on July 1st. Unfortunately your 3.0 iPhone would not have worked with iPod Access before that. iPod Access was the first music transfer program to provide iPhone OS 3.0 support.

2. iPod Access is written in Realbasic as stated in the about box. I am surprised this is even on your radar. Many great things are written in Realbasic.

3. iPod Access will work in Snow Leopard when it is released or shortly after.

4. Memory Leaks do not exist after a program is closed, only while running. If you have 50MB getting tied up somewhere it either your OS or another program.

5. The warnings in the readme file are to prevent headache. Apple has gone to great links to automatically sync iPods. This can sometimes end up erasing iPods and all the users music. iPod Access has implemented safety routines to help guard against this but there are things a user can do to help prevent it. To be honest we have never had a complaint about providing too much information. If it annoys you please do not read it.

Sorry to hear your experience with iPod Access has not been great. Hopefully you will take another look at our app in the future and see if it meets your needs.

ISPYTONYV  Other than a couple crashes, this program worked awesome for me! Used it to copy all my iPhone playlists onto my new MacBook... very seamless and easy to use.

COUGARBLUE  I found that I was unable to copy my playlists with IPod Access; as has been reported. Some songs were transfered as only as a title others with both song and title. That was a problem other reviewers had too. The program would be fine, if improvements could be made, and if already excellent programs were not already available for free.

I then went with my old standby the FREE Senuti. 5571 songs on my iPod, 5571 songs accounted for on my computer.

The report on iPodRip seemed a little too glowing so I checked the comments and reviews on that program as well. For the most part every review reported a problem with iPodRip.

I would give both programs two stars, unreliable with separate sets of problems. I can only recommend Senuti. It's not fancy, nor loaded with features, it just does the job flawlessly.

Until IPod Access can develop that reliability, I can't give it a positive recommendation.

FINDLEY DESIGNS  Playlist cloning and duplicate checking has been drastically improved in v4.2.

Starting with v4.2 for iPod Access to decide that a song already exists in iTunes the ID3 tags of the songs must match. If the Song Name, Artist, Album, Track Number, duration, bitrate or file type is different on either the iPod or iTunes they will be considered 2 different songs. When using the "Add to iTunes" or "Clone Playlist" functions of iPod Access this criteria is used to determine if the songs already exist before the copy takes place.

GARETH  Well I used both iPod Access for Mac and the Windows Version to assist in the transfer of an iPod and iTunes Library from Mac to PC (including a reformat of the iPOd) and the program worked without a hitch. The backup and the copy to iTunes functions were great --- and so was the support from the developer...immediate replies to my questions and very helpful advice. I would thoroughly recommend this program!

BUCKCHOCOLATE  It works just like it should. I Love it. I have used it to keep space free on my hard drive. Now I can delete parts of my iTunes Library and still be able to get it back off the iPod later. Using OSX v.10.3.4 on a 1.25dual processor machine w/ 768meg RAM. I have no problems with this app. on a 400mhz 192mb RAM Powerbook Pismo (OSX10.3.4) from 1991 either. I highly recommend this app.

DREW FINDLEY  Sergei Yakovlev, I am very sorry to hear that your iPod has stopped working but that has nothing to do with iPod Access. iPod Access does not alter in anyway your iPod Library. The reason I wrote this application was because I was fed up with the applications that do damage your iPod. The fact that your iPod was playing music badly proves that your iPod was having problems not related to iPod Access. The code functions of iPod Access are very simple, it copies files. It does not adjust audio quality or allow you to change any aspect of how your iPod plays/finds songs. Again I am sorry that you lost your music but I would suggest sending your iPod to Apple for repair. In the future I would appreciate it if you would send an email to tech support (support@drewfindley.com) instead of posting messages without a way for me to contact/help you. If you still require assistance with product you can also find troubleshooting tips on the support page of my website www.findleydesigns.com.

Regards,

Drew Findley

SERGEI YAKOVLEV  Hi!

I thought this program was great until it ruined my friend's iPod. Here's what happened.

I was using iPod Access to copy several songs off my friend's iPod (second generation). The program itself was located on the iPod. So I started it up, and tried to copy a song. It worked! Then I copied an album, then another one, and then, all of a sudden, after successfully copying maybe 30 or 40 albums, something happened.

When I played another song off the iPod, I started hearing some garbage instead of music, then I tried another song (I still thought it was the problem with particular files), but all in vain. So I decided it was the problem with the player, so I ejected the iPod, reconnected it again, and you know what? The Finder told me it couldn't read the disk!!! And suggested initializing it.

Clearly, all my friend's library was lost. But there's more. We tried to reformat the drive in the iPod, so we followed official instructions on the Apple's website. But using Disk Utility wonn't give us any results; the progress bar stopped at 5% and won't move any further! The only thing we can do know is contact Apple Technical Support.

Now I don't know what to do. I'm not a registered user, but there are many unregistered users, right? And I was allowed to copy 5 songs per time even not being registered. I wasn't cracking the program or trying to use it in the way it wasn't designed to be used.

So I just thought you might want to know that using this software MAY (not necessarily will) cause severe problems to your iPod at the firmware (if not hardware) level.

ANONYMOUS  Here, again, is my free AppleScript for copying songs from an iPod to your desktop. Currently only one file at a time, but you can tweak it however you want. Copy and paste the following into Script Editor.

global myName

tell application "System Events" to set myName to the full name of the current user

display dialog "Enter the name of the iPod:" default answer "" & myName & "’s iPod"

set userName to the text returned of the result

if userName is not "" then

display dialog "Enter a partial or complete name of the file of the song:" default answer ""

set songName to the text returned of the result

if songName is not "" then

do shell script "find /Volumes/\"" & userName & "\"*" & "/iPod_Control/Music/*/*\"" & songName & "\"*"

set pathName to the result

do shell script "cp \"" & pathName & "\" ~/Desktop/"

end if

end if

DREW FINDLEY  Marcus,

I am sure iPodrip enjoys the advertisement you have given on this page for software that is not even available yet, but next time please leave some constructive criticism. iPod Access is loaded with features, if their is something you believe is missing please send me an email at support@drewfindley.com. I am always looking to improve the program.

ANONYMOUS  This program is long on promises, short on performance. (All efforts to test this program in a clean environment with the most recent software updates have been made.)

The program has some critical bugs. iPod Access supposedly offers a nice "cloning" feature to copy playlists from an iPod to iTunes. It specifically says that "If the songs are already in your library they will not be copied." This was clearly not the case, as I sorted through the results, noting hundreds of duplicate files now in my iTunes Library.

iPod Access also professes to offer a neat Backup feature - backing up the contents of the iPod onto a hard drive. Again, after numerous tries, the program would hang when only partially done.

Support is limited on the sparse web site, so to those who are considering purchasing this program might want to think again.

M2  Wow. I often worry about buying shareware software in the off chance the author decides to release fixes and changes and enhancements to their software. It is definitely not the case with iPod Access. I tried this out, along with a lot of other iPod utilities, and I was blown away. Worked as I wanted it to, yet, with much more I hadn't even expected. Great application.

ANONYMOUS  iPod Access replaced iPod Viewer for me, after iPod Viewer stopped working on Panther.

iPod Access does *much* more, and a lot better, too. Plus, it organizes music copied from your iPod, instead of just putting it all in a folder.

It doesn't get any better than iPod Access.

BRIAN  Sure... Applications such as iPodViwer are free. But, why discourage enterprising applications designers? I say we reward them for innovation and making our lives easier. $10 dollars to make my iPod even more useful and eaier to interface with my smokin iMac? Any time.
