THE FLYING FISH A great program as being a business owner who has had staff visiting unauthorised web sites, it is very important to have Safari's history go further back than 7 to 14 days. Being able to extend this is a great benefit. In order for Safaricon to install the icon themes on OS 10.4.9 with Safari 2.0.4 I simply needed to download the icon theme called Safari, which is offered as an option when Safaricon is first installed. The history configuration worked without this download. Thanks again for a brillian program. One suggestion for those needing to obtain more detailed information such as time stamping and tracking duration of time spent on each web site, is to use WorkTracker from www.geocities.com/work_tracker

CHRIS DOYLE Excellent application. Easy to use, and updated as soon as Safari is updated for compatibility. Personally, I am surprised that Apple doesn't buy this and use it as a standard issue with Safari. Essential. I preferred the round buttons on the Oahu and Molokini interface/skin which are changed in this version. I emailed the author, Reinhold, and shortly after he emailed me the theme files for the round buttons! He also mentioned these will be available on his website if anyone is interested (go to the link for "More Information" for access).

JL I've been using this app since it first came out, and it just keeps getting better. The developer stays on top of Safari updates as Apple releases them, and his tech support is the best I've ever experienced. Would you believe a response within MINUTES to an email question? Oh, and it makes Safari look great, too. :)

ANONYMOUS seems to be a problem between Safaricon and ShapeShifter. When Safaricon is set to use a "metal" appearance, and SS is set to use a theme, then everything is fine with Safaricon. Options are to put Safari in the "exclude" list for SS, or just use metal in safaricon along with the SS theme.

ANONYMOUS I had the slowness problem but I did the following 2. Select theme and click install 3. Wait about 30 seconds or so 4. Authentication request dialog box came up. 6. Dialog sheet appear asking for admin password 7. Enter password and check the save password in keychains check box 9. The program started to apply the new theme without asking me for the password again. This one took about 30 seconds. The strange thing is that the Safaricon did not store the password in the keychains. Anyway, you may not experience the same thing I do.

REINHOLD PENNER Okay, I now have a version that returns the permissions to their original state. There are two caveats: 1. it is in fact considerably slower (22 vs 8 seconds on my Mac). 2. Since each and every icon needs to be modified using admin privileges (at least when changing the owner), it may trigger the dreaded glacial slowdowns that some people have observed in the 2.3.1 version. On all my Macs, this slowdown is not present and although the permissions fix slows down to 22 seconds for me, I cannot see the glacial speeds of 30 minutes or more that some people have experienced. In other words, I need beta testers (preferably those people who had the very slow transfers). I have placed a version of SafarIcon at the following URL: h**p://homepage.mac.com/reinholdpenner/SafarIconFix.zip. Please test theme installation with and without permission fix enabled (this is set in the Preferences) and let me know how it works.

PEGGY Lamentably only the metal theme worked for me on my emac (10.4.3 with Safari 2.0.2) When I tried the aqua, my bookmarks menu wouldn't work. It would disappear and reappear as I ran the pointer over it, but nothing could be clicked on. Putting back the (ugly) metal theme fixed it back to working order.

ANONYMOUS Regarding the permissions, it is simply unavoidable. But I can assure you that it's completely and totally irrelevant what the ownership status of a tif or nib file inside an application bundle has as long as it's readable. I could certainly change the ownership, but it would unnecessarily slow down the installation process for absolutely no gain. You do not have to repair permissions. It has absolutely no effect on Safari's functionality. I may consider adding a preference for those who absolutely want the permissions changed...

The fact that I get tons of permission repair messages from the disk utility always bothered me, and it made me wonder what else SafarIcon does not do right. Oh, and the speed argument is silly: Nobody runs SafarIcon in their inner loops, and I don't expect the difference to be noticable.

It seems to be intermittent as well, because one user had a slow copy, then all of a sudden it was fast, only to get slow again. I don't know what to do about this, since it works just fine for me and I assume for the silent majority of users.

I have now tried it on two different machines (one older PowerBook 15'' and one fairly new Dual G5), and the symptoms are precisely the same. That's 100% failure rate for me, on two very "vanilla" machines. (In other words, I have not done any strange re-configurations to Safari or to the system in general.) Is there anyone other than the developer who can report success with this?

I don't have AIM, so excuse this form of communication. I have also had it fail on an iMac 1.25 GHz and an iBook 1.42 GHz under 10.4.3. In the past, I have never had any problems. Just run version 2.3 (it's available under older versions on my site) and you will see that the same app you used before on 10.4.2 and transferred icons quickly now will be as slow as 2.3.1. But what I don't understand is why all versions run just fine on my 3 Macs.

ANONYMOUS Sorry, this version requires 2.0.1 to install appeaarances (it won't even work with with 2.0). The reason for this is that nib files are version-specific. As to older versions of Safari and/or OS, sorry, but I cannot possibly supply those nibs. It's a lot of work for very few users. Consider upgrading the OS instead.

OAW I agree. I'm not crazy about the new toolbar buttons in Mail either. What I'm talking about though is the window itself. The "Unified" style .... which is essentially "brushed metal" without the metal. I personally would run it like that with the current default toolbar buttons. I think it would look great like that.

The new Unified option is a great start. But I agree with you. It just looks "off". I think it is because the Bookmarks Bar and the selected tab don't toggle between the "active" and "inactive" state like the toolbar. That is, they always have the pinstripe look ... which is fine when the window is inactive ... but when it is active it should look just like the toolbar. If you could somehow tweak Safari so that it behaves like this then that would be simply awesome!

REINHOLD I looked into somehow modifying the background of the bookmarks area. Unfortunately, the bookmarks are created on the fly by Safari itself and they mask any underlying graphics I put in. So it's impossible to change the background (but I said impossible before and after more careful inspection it turned out possible). So I will take another more careful look and see if I can somehow come up with a solution. If anyone else wants to look into this and share some tips, let me know.

It appears to have been replaced by the font size buttons. I know I can just hit command T but I liked having the tab options in the bar. ANONYMOUS If you have the latest version of Safari, this program has disabled features. You cannot switch between aqua and brushed metal when you have 1.2.4. This means that if I set Safari to aqua while using 1.2.3, and then upgraded Safari to the latest version (that has been out for a long time now), there is no way to switch back. So Safari is now stuck in aqua, and because the developer put in a "feature" that cripples the software, I can't switch back. Moreover, this has happened TWICE! When I upgraded to 1.2.3, the feature was disabled until the developer released an update. Now, I'm waiting for the developer to release another update to support 1.2.4. By the time that happens, 1.3 will probably be out, and I won't be able to change anything back. So essentially, if you keep your software up to date, you now need to rely on some developer to get around to fixing their software every time you update it. I would be one thing if you had to wait a couple days... but my Safari has been stuck in aqua for MONTHS.

TGM I am unable to change icons for Safari 1.0.3 with any version of Safaricon, including 2.1.3, and I assumed that 2.1.3 only worked for Safari 1.2.3 in Panther. I am using OS X 10.2.8, and have tried various versions of Safaricon going back to 1.8. I make sure the program is set to the correct file path for Safari 1.0.3, enter the password, but the program does nothing. I will check to see if the problem is caused by something else.

ANONYMOUS pretty slow and i don't like parts of the UI such as having the readme/preferences in the main window, but overall a good app that accomplishes its goal nicely. i highly recommend it if you're into customizing things or just want to play around with the look/feel of safari.

REINHOLD PENNER The speed of drawing themes is a limitation of AS Studio applications. The speed of installing themes is somewhat compromised by the recent requirement to copy with administrator privileges. EJI SafarIcon 2.0 works well, as always, but it displays the admin password instead of cloaking it with asterisks. On a home computer like mine this isn't a big problem, but it could be a security risk for someone using a Mac in a less private environment.

ANONYMOUS Tips: Be sure to download the extra themes in the Preferences. Click off the "copy to Safari". Then you can mix and match icons from several themes. Click "view custom theme". Then click install. (I think I got this right.) Don't click too fast.

ANONYMOUS Once you get past the -link deal, this is very cool. Simple, intuitive, reversible, and lots o' different themes. Use the version check to install extra themes to avoid the -link (and the annoying OSX message that believes it know better than you how you want to name your files) for every single theme you'd otherwise download from the Safaricon site.

Though you've definitely got the right operating system, you don't have the most recent version of Safari... but what they forgot to tell you is that Safari 1.2 ONLY runs on 10.3 [probably to get the rest of us to cave in & upgrade]. I vaguely remember seeing Safaricon on here before... maybe you can email whoever created the program & see if they have an older version you can download that'll work with a non-updated Safari.

REINHOLD PENNER The Japanese localization of SafarIcon indeed has a small bug that creates this error message. The error only appears with certain Themes that lack a specific icon (that's why I didn't catch the bug). I will release a bug fix version soon. In the meantime, just click the message away and keep using SafarIcon. The error message will not cause any problems when installing themes (it's just annoying). HTH, -Reinhold

BIG SWIFTY I really like the tweaks you can make with this simple utility, and the developer is very generous to give it away. I downloaded a later version like the developer suggested and Aqua works now... but I had to take a coupla points off because the program won't quit through normal means. Can't quit via menu or keyboard command --- have to force quit. This means that SafarIcon preferences won't stick, but the program does do what intends to do. (Using eMac w/10.2.6)

REINHOLD PENNER By mistake, I initially uploaded the wrong version of the SafarIcon archive. I caught it right after I downloaded the archive myself. I immediately corrected the mistake, but the very first few downloaders may have gotten the wrong version. There's nothing seriously wrong with it, except that it won't install the Aqua appearance. So if you were an early bird and want Aqua, please redownload the file (if you don't care about Aqua and always use the Metal appearance just keep the version you have). A note about the greyed icons in practically all themes: It's not a bug, it's a feature. Those icons are from the default Safari theme and they are disabled (greyed out), because the particular theme does not contain the corresponding icon.
