KRIS I used to love Spell Catcher. I've owned it from the beginning. Now I just find it an annoyance. My biggest complaint is Spell Catcher opens up when I don't want it to! Every time I open some sort of word processor or even FireFox or Safari, it gets invoked. It's unnecessary for me. And it's frustrating that I have no control over it. When I posted to the forum looking for help to stop that, the reply I got was that it's a "feature." Sound like a "bug" to me. I don't want that as a feature. I want Spell Catcher to open up when I want it to. I looked all over for the manual override, but cannot find any. I'm ready to trash it off my system. Any suggestions??? (Version 10.3.4)

ROBOTANK You can disable Spell Catcher's interactive features (or set any kind of preference) on a per-application as well as universal basis. Open Spell Catcher's preferences, click on the Application tab, select the application you want to add, then set its preferences as you wish (the universal settings are at the top of this list). Simply unchecking the Box "Interactive features enabled" will essentially turn off Spell Catcher. (Version 10.3.4)

UNCOY Spell Catcher X sounds like a good idea. But Evan has to hack so far into the core OS hat you are seriously compromising system stability for a little bit of convenience. I ended up doing a fresh install recently, in part to clean software like Spell Catcher out of my system. Over at SmileOnMyMac, they aren't doing any better with stability and reliability with TextExpander. The only working text expansion utility that I know of is Typinator from Ergonis. You can't feel it run and if you monitor CPU usage, it's negligible. There's only a single process running. For backup of your typing there is BackTrack. BackTrack launches an annoying daemon to check your network for other copies so I won't use it but it's a lot less invasive than SpellCatcher. What is a bit worrying is that the guys at Spell Catcher seem to have gamed their recent MuPromo. Negative comments about stability and invasiveness rose quickly at first and then were voted down while positive posts were heavily voted up. Very strange. (Version 10.3.3)

ROBOTANK Really? A one-star review because you assume that Spell Catcher is unstable? Do you have any evidence or experience to suggest that this version is as dangerous as you claim it to be? Can you provide an example of this "[in]stability and invasiveness"? Can you explain what you mean by "hack[ing] so far into the core OS"? Your "review" should be supported with something more than you've provided. (Version 10.3.3)

EVAN GROSS I'd love to know where you got this (mis)information from. It's not even remotely correct or accurate. Please supply evidence of how I have to "hack so far into the core OS". Please supply evidence of how Spell Catcher is "seriously compromising system stability". I know you can't because both statements are entirely incorrect. Maybe I have to work around a Mac OS X bug or two. What developer doesn't? But it never involves "hacking into the core OS". Now tell me how "the guys at Spell Catcher seem to have gamed their recent MuPromo". These "guys at Spell Catcher" consist of one guy - me. How can one person (with a single MacUpdate user login) do this? I'm not sure what your agenda is, but I am sure of how Spell Catcher does what it does. You or your "information" source most certainly don't. (Version 10.3.3)

Anyone who installs SpellCatcher and uses it for awhile will note how use of the input menu is compromised by SpellCatcher (i.e. SpellCatcher has to be turned on there for it to work). Intercepting spellchecking is also hacking into the OS. In fact there are so many different hacks necessary for SpellCatcher to be able to do all the things it does, that it's difficult to list them all. I like the idea of SpellCatcher but it tries to do so many things that it inevitably becomes a serpent wrapped around the user's OS. If it's true that you didn't send a voting crew around to the recent MuPromo, then I commend you. I did catch another developer at it earlier this year. If that's the case, I am a at least a star too low in my evaluation. I will say one thing for you Evan. You are dedicated to your customers and your program. So if someone has the time to struggle through troubleshooting SpellCatcher, you will help them. You've been working at Thunder and now SpellCatcher for years. I do own a license so if one day you manage to simplify it all (not that Apple makes this kind of work easy), even if there is less functionality, I might give SpellCatcher another try. My experience of using SpellCatcher successfully was like trying to administer a second computer. Just too much overhead for the functionality I needed. But on the other hand, I'm quite a good speller. (Version 10.3.3)
| Jan 19 2010 |
EVAN GROSS Input methods, spelling servers, and application services (Services menu) are supported and documented Mac OS X technologies. Spell Catcher X uses them appropriately. They are not hacks. Implementing or using them is not "hacking into the core OS". Enough said. Move this to our forums if you wish. (Version 10.3.3)

ROBOTANK Wow, UNCOY, you've really missed the point. Yet again you've failed to provide any specific examples of the problems you claim you're having or any detailed explanation of your claims about system hacking. I'm particularly interested to understand how simply running Spell Catcher could have caused you so much difficulty. By the way, I suspect that most people who write enough to need Spell Catcher are good spellers. However, we're all prone to typos and occasional spelling errors, and when one does a lot of writing, Spell Catcher becomes more than a convenience--it is a huge time saver with its on-the-fly correction and shorthand expansion. In any case, you're certainly entitled to express your own opinion, but I hope that people reading this forum don't take your comments as necessarily true or indicative of common user experience with Spell Catcher. UNCOY Tag teaming are we now? Here's the experience of another expert user Karl Craig from Apple's discussion forums: Yes, it was Spell Checker! As others had suggested, I had previously removed the Services package from my library, but this still didn't help. BUT, when I ran the Uninstaller as suggested by Johannes in another thread, IT WORKED! Apparently, Spell Checker must install some other resources that even Spotlight couldn't find - so a warning to us all: beware third-party software that interferes at a system level. Here's the link for the Uninstaller: http://www.spellcatcher.com/dl/extras/Uninstall_SCX.zip Funny thing was that I bought Spell Checker over a year ago. I didn't like it at all, so I trashed the app and the login file. I never thought for a moment that one day this piece of junk was going to come back from the grave to haunt me … but it did! Worst $20 I ever wasted! I wonder how many other pieces of junk we all have lurking on our hard drives that will one day cause us grief? It looks like I'm not alone after all. MISHA A forum post from a single user from 2+ years ago is all you provide as evidence of "hacking into the core OS"? If there was a bug present that caused what that user experienced, Evan undoubtedly has since fixed it... Well I've shared my experience and documented at least one other example (there's actually about five or six over there in Apple discussions). If others have had a better experience with Spell Catcher, so much the better. But that's my own experience above. I recently did a clean install to purge my machine of any lurking detritus of applications which install kexts and input managers. Spell Catcher is definitely in this category. However, I do appreciate that Evan does provide an uninstaller which on the surface of things does appear to clean up after SC. And I do recognise that Evan, unlike many other recent shareware developers, is genuinely concerned about his users and is really committed to his software. As I wrote above, Misha, you are free to change my original rating to 2 stars based on issues clarified here. (Version 10.3.4)

UNCOY Thanks for the link Evan. Interesting reading. To be honest, while it does show that you had some fixes available in a timely way, it also supports my point: running Spell Catcher is awfully hard work, due to the obstacles Apple places in your way. Perhaps you could come up with a Spell Catcher lite which does some part of what Spell Catcher does without requiring so much tending? (Version 10.3.4)

B. JEFFERSON LE BLANC I have to agree with the positive reviewers. Keeping up compatibility as OS X has evolved hasn't been easy, I'm sure. But I've been using Spell Catcher since the days of OS 7 and I appreciate the developer's efforts to keep the app up to date. It's great to have it working in 64 bit apps (like Safari) now. Even though many programs and the OS itself have their own dictionaries, Spell Catcher works across the board (again) and it is where I keep my most complete custom dictionary. (Version 10.3.3)

ROBOTANK Great update overall.. It's nice to see this finally working across the board in Snow Leopard. Anyone else seeing this? (Version 10.3.3)

ROBOTANK Nevermind. I figured out what the problem was. For some reason, the keyboard shortcut to select the next input method in the list was set to Command+Space (no idea how this happened, since that's normally the Spotlight shortcut), which is the same as my shortcut for LaunchBar. Every time I activated LaunchBar it would switch the input method, and that's why I thought it wasn't activating. Sorry! (Version 10.3.3)

ESPIRIDION Worthy update to a great program. This version comes with a variety of improvements and added features that can be found here: http://www.rainmakerinc.com/products/spellcatcherx/whatsnew10_3.html Support is excellent, and the upgrade fee is very reasonable. For those unfamiliar with the program, in addition to being a spell checker, it can also be used to expand frequently used text, get text statistics (e.g., Fog Index and Flesch-Kincaid), manipulate text (e.g., changing case, removing multiple spaces, etc.), use Macros, and more. DirectCorrect is an important new feature. It may not work with all applications, and with some it may not be evident that it works. For example, it may appear that it's no possible to turn it on with a specific application, but when the interface has a field that supports DirectCorrect -like when typing this review or posting on a forum- it becomes possible to turn it on. It pays to read about its features and experiment with it. (Version 10.3)

LARAINE Yes, $40 IS rather a lot for a utility program. But it sounds, from the comments here, that it might be worth it, so I'm going to give it a whirl. I'm driven round the bend by Mariner Write's inexcusably poor International English dictionary. And Dreamweaver 8 doesn't even HAVE one! (Unbelievable.) This (Spell Catcher) is one of those things that Mac users shouldn't have to buy, just as they shouldn't have to buy other utilities like Keyboard Maestro. I HATE that dock. I want to be able to use keyboard shortcuts to open or switch applications. It's so slow and inefficient having to go to the dock. Unfortunately, even Keyboard Maestro won't let me get rid of the dock altogether the way Now Utilities and (as it later became) Action Utilities did with their similar, but plainer, docks. I appreciate how Apple makes its computers so user friendly you'd have to be an idiot not to be able to teach yourself how to use and how to look after one, but there comes a time when Mac users are no longer beginners and want to configure their Macs to suit the way they work. Sorry for the rant. I'll shut up now. *G* (Version 10.3)

STICKMAN67 A must-have application. I use a variety of software applications, ranging from typesetting and word-processing, to email, to spreadsheets and databases. Maintaining consistency of spellings across all of these types of apps is critical, but multiple user dictionaries prove to be a pain in the proverbial. Spell Catcher has solved that problem for me, and does its job well and in the background. It's fast, and the dictionaries seem to be very comprehensive so far. The task I'm working on has some pretty technical medical terminology, and the British English medical dictionary is handling it really well. And the one time I've had to contact the developer (an educational pricing query), not only did he contact me very quickly indeed with a very satisfactory answer, but he also apologised for the time it took to reply! I'm impressed, and I recommend Spell Catcher with no reservations. (Version 10.2.2)

PAULC To call this "just a spell checker" is to ignore three quarters of what it can do for you. For me, the Lookup function (highlight a word, hit a keystroke) returns data from it's own data sources along with publicly accessible data is fabulous. Ever wanted, needed to clean up some text? SCX can do that. Having troubles? Like detailed below, this program has a very actively involved developer... both in responding to issues as well as advancing the software forward. Some may get "scared" by the seemingly daunting array of preferences; understand that this is what allows one to very precisely set the software to function the way they want it to; there's no "the developers way or no way" here. Honestly, this stuff is worth twice what you can get it for. (Version 10.2.2)

CHIEFTED Wouldn't recommend this software if you are using a "launcher program" (Butler, Quicksilver or LaunchBar). I tried using it with all three to see if I got the same results and even after placing each of the programs into "ignore" file (sorry I can't remember what the option was but it will set those programs up with their own special spelling rules), I still got the annoying warnings about mis-spellings. Since with each of the launcher applications you are typing part of the word and then hitting enter, Spell Catcher thinks that the word is spelled incorrectly. I wound up removing the program. If you aren't using one of the above programs it is a fairly good program but not at the advertised price. (Version 10.2.2b3)

EVAN GROSS I developed the software while running on Tiger, from pre-releases to date with 10.4.2. I can say with absolute certainty that Spell Catcher X 10.2.1 launches, and beyond that, absolutely works with all functionality on Tiger. You need to tweak some SCX preferences for badly-behavied apps on Tiger (Mail is definitely one of them!), but all that involves in unchecking a single checkbox. Why not ask us? JIMW For Tiger user (from Apple): " You're reading a pithy article on helmets.com and, suddenly, you come across a word you've never bumped into before. Instead of scratching your head, you could, of course, hit the trusty F12 key and look up the meaning of the word in the Dictionary Widget. But here's a cool alternative. Hold down, all at once, the Control, Command, and D keys while pointing your mouse directly at the word in question. And, voilà, up pops a little window with a definition straight out of the new dictionary built into Mac OS X Tiger." Additionally clicking "More" in the window brings up spelling suggestions if the word is misspelled. You can also select a Thesaurus instead of the Dictionary. Note that this is all included at no extra cost with Tiger (OSX 10.4) (Version 10.2.1)

EVAN GROSS When you are dealing with updating input method components, there is no alternative but to restart (once - not sure why you thought two were necessary - they are not - and often a logout/in is good enough). See Apple's Technical Q&A on the subject: Spell Catcher X is not somehow "magically immune" to the rules OS X imposes. The rules are, well, there for a reason (or reasons), and it's always best to play by them. Feel free to take shortcuts if you are aware of the possible side-effects. The worst that could happen is (surprise!) you would have to restart to get a updated input method component installed and recognized properly by the OS. We document what's recommended. If you know your way around OS X and the portions that deal with components and services, feel free to improvise by killing processes, rm'ing executables with Terminal that are still paged in and whose code is still being executed by open applications. I've tried it all - after all it's me, the developer, that is always looking for the absolutely fastest way to build a new version and get it installed properly so that I can test my changes... I also agree with the other reviewer who says the install instructions are absolutely too diffcult for words. They need to remove this version from the boards. (Version 10.1.1)

EVAN GROSS Sounds like a bad installation. Over 1,500 downloads, and this is the only report of anything like that happening. Make sure you have only one copy of the Spell Catcher.component file. This sounds like the problem. Contact our tech support when something like this happens! It is highly abnormal. (Version 10.1.1)

ANONYMOUS This is a good news, bad news scenario. The good news is that it's a great app, honestly. The bad news is that the install regimen is beyond complex. I know more about OS X than %95 percent of users. The only people who know more about OS X created it. Although there are copius instructions, even if followed, the install may and probably will fail. This developer has a great app and needs to hire someone to either write the install directions in English, or to write an installer that actually gets around these issues. I have NEVER seen anything like it. (Version 10.1.1)

EVAN GROSS It's the upgrade from 10.0.2 that's complex. This is necessarily so. Trust me, I know this stuff. The installation (a new one) is trivial. Copy one file to Applications, launch it, log out, log in. Done. (Version 10.1.1)

ANONYMOUS Looks like developer will answer every poor rating he gets. I could do without reading his excuses and bulls**t! (Version 10.1.3)

ANONYMOUS Wow. I'd been waiting for this release to try out Spell Catcher, since I'd heard about issues with Panther. Now that I'm trying it, I have to say, it's extremely nice. It does seem to slow down BBEdit a bit when the Input Method is active, but I can't say which program is to blame there. I do wish for the ability to change the active dictionaries on a per-application basis; unfortunately that part of the Preferences says that those settings are "always global". I also wish for the red underlines in Carbon programs, but that can't be helped (or held against Spell Catcher). I think it's safe to say I'll be buying this one. (Version 10.1)

ANONYMOUS For the professional writer on the Mac or someone who cares about their writing, Spell Checker X is the only real choice for industrial strength text processing. One word list, learn one app, and you are set for all text processing on the Mac. This program, while expensive, really has no competitor, and version 10.1 runs seamlessly in OS X 10.3. An excellent program. (Version 10.1)

PAUL INGRAHAM Fantastic application, can't live without it. In particular, I depend upon the fantastic shorthand feature, which allows me to write comprehensive medical charts about three times faster than I could otherwise. The OS X version lacks some of the elegance and bulletproof reliability of OS 9 versions, but I trust that will probably be resolved in the next version. The spell checking features are less important to me, and I wonder what Spell Catcher's role will be as Cocoa apps start to take advantage of OS X's built-in spell-checking abilities. But for now, this app is still essential, Much gratitude to Rainmaker for carrying the torch, and their support has been excellent. (Version 10.0.2)

RSOLDIN When SpellCatcher hit the Mac back in the older OS days it became one of the best programs you could buy for the Mac. Its one of those programs that you can’t live without once you use it. When OSX came thorugh, all that used it in the older OS waited and waited for the OSX version. When it was released everyone jumped up and down. This is one of those applications that Apple should integrate into its system. Download it and try it. You will be hooked in a few seconds. It will aid you in all of your typing, no matter what application you are in. The support is also the best. (Version 10.0.2)

BARRY Sorrry to skew SpellCatcher ratings. There is no manual with this software. Every program I've ever bought has had a manual. The online help isn't helpful enough (Version 10.0)

FRANKS After using Spell Catcher 8 for many years with the Classic MacOS I'm glad to see that the OSX version is now available. SC8 was a great application, SCX is better! This is one application that anyone who writes should not be without. (Version 10.0)
