WILLYUSAS I previously posted a review that I wish I could change. There was an issue with my Aperture database that I thought was actually the application not working, but it turns out it was my database that had some issues. I have been able to run this app on a pristine database and it worked like a charm. Best part of all: Giuseppe, the developer, has been absolutely incredibble; emailing and helping me troubleshoot. I highly recommend taking this app for a spin, and contacting the developer if something doesn't seem clear...he will definitely help! (Version 2.1.2)

WILLYUSAS Well , I have tried using it in 3 different macs (a macbook, a mbp and a mac tower, and it seems to go through all the steps, but then Aperture does not get any images tagged with the keywords... so nothing really happens.... if this worked proper;ly it would be an incredible app! Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work with the latest aperture version.... (Version 2.1.1)

WILLYUSAS After testing with different computers, I saw this working on a mac mini with 10.5 and latest aperture. Worked flawless. I have figured out there is something odd about my aperture database... I am in the process of rebuilding it and reorganizing it and will go at it again. The support from the developer (Giuseppe) has been absolutely fantastic, with incredibly fast responses and troubleshooting all my scenarios. I rarely see this type of dedication and support. Giuseppe has made a believer and a supporter out of me. (Version 2.1.2)

FIMAN16 This doesn't seem to be working for me. I am on an 2008 intel iMac running snow leopard and Tidy Up 2.1.1. I found a bunch of old music on an external hard drive of mine which were sorted into folders that represented the song's tags. But not all of the songs were tagged correctly when I imported them into iTunes. So I thought Tidy Up would be able to sort through my iTunes folder and the music folder on the external and find the duplicates that were tagged incorrectly. Since iTunes replaced the file names of the songs that were tagged correctly, I knew that in order to find the the dupes I would need to search the filename. I verified that the untagged songs were in the "Unknown Artist" folder of the iTunes music folder so I selected the folder along with the folder on the external. I verified beforehand that there was in fact at least one set of dupes from each folder with the filename "14 - Oh Very Young.mp3". However when I perform the search, it does not give any duplicates. It searches all the files because I can see the total files searched before it finishes, but it doesn't work. I then tried a search term for the filename "14 -" and it still did not find the files! I am really disappointed with this. (Version 2.1.1)

SNOWWHITESICKETTE I have several Macs and backup drives. Because I like to have certain files on all of my Macs, I noticed I had a lot of duplicates, particularly in one backup partition that all the Macs access. With the massive size of drives these days, I felt I could no longer do the job of removing duplicates manually. Who has the time? I downloaded several programs that locate duplicates, searching for the "right" app for me. Tidy Up! was the winner, hands down. There are cheaper applications, and my runner up choice was free. But Tidy Up! impressed me so much, I bought licenses for the version 1 for Tiger and version 2 for Leopard. I got both for $40, on sale at the Kagi page. Tidy Up! is FAST. I scanned an entire 120GB drive on an old G3 iMac, and Tidy Up! spotted thousands of duplicates and was done in less than a minute. Amazing! Some of the apps I tried were so slow I gave up and quit mid scan. Tidy Up! has plenty of customizable settings that can be set for scanning and/or deleting. I prefer to delete manually, because I want the greatest control over what is deleted. Some of the duplicates that Tidy Up! showed me were files I didn't even want one copy of, much less multiples. I am an icon junkie, and Tidy Up! helps me keep 15,000-20,000 icons per Mac duplicate-free. I thought I liked the version 1 of the application better, until I tweaked the preferences on version 2. Then they offered the same options on start up. Until I decide to learn more about the features, it's easier for me if both apps are alike. Tidy Up! deserves better ratings than it currently has, IMO. Most of the poor reviews are for the price to upgrade, not performance. I don't have a problem with someone leaving a poor rating for that reason, as that the reviewer's judgment call. But the application itself is very good. Tidy Up! 2 has a different look, and additional features over version 1. There are also complaints about the price from people who never bought a license. IMO Dupe Guru and its offsprings are the real rip-off in this category. Three programs from 20-25 bucks a pop and Tidy Up! finds the duplicates that take three Dupe Guru apps. Tidy Up! is a bargain in comparison, and faster by far. Tidy Up! is not cheap, but if money is more important than time, there are free apps that can help remove duplicates. My only complaint with Tidy Up! is I would have liked if the trial period let you delete more stuff, as the amount alloted is so small it is hard to judge how fast larger actions will be if you buy the license. STEVE FRAWLEY Get it while you can at this price. Some complained at $39, but this software is tremendously powerful and Giuseppe responded with a temporary price cut. No, I am not affiliated, but have used Giuseppe's excellent support when I first started using it to manage the Master Copy of my very large iTunes library. Read my earlier comments about taking time to make sure you do with it what you intend, because it really does what you tell it to do, whether you want it or not! ;) Great for finding duplicates of any kind as well . . . . PATRICK SHEEHAN I'm guessing that some reviewers here haven't taken the time to read the "read me" file to learn how to use the program. I've been using Tidy Up since its inception and have found it incredibly useful for keeping my Macs' files in order. Often I transfer files across several machines and duplicates (and older versions) can easily become nested in folders where they're not expected. Tidy Up races through all of the files on my hard drives and presents me with the exact information I need to decide on what to keep and what to toss. What I especially fail to understand is the lambasting going on here for $20 for an upgrade to a program that many folks have used for years for free. It seems to make common sense that if a programmer spends time rewriting code to both add features and to adapt to Apple's new operating systems that such time should be remunerated. Best as I can tell, no one is being forced to upgrade. If the program is useful to you, $20 seems a small price to pay for all of the benefits it offers. Just my two cents, but I've had no problem backing that with my twenty dollars. (Version 2.0.4)

NARROWNECK I couldn't believe my luck finding this application. But I find I am not able to understand the interface to achieve what I want. Which is: What images in location A are also in location B? It tells me duplicate within A and within B but not between the two! It finds JPG files when all images are selected but not when JPEG is selected! Setting up duplicates in the same location are not detected by Selecting Images, All kinds in Basic Mode. Selecting the folder and Search. Nothing found even though the selected folder has two folders containing duplicate JPG files! Hmm What did I do wrong there? Do the same with Other files and packages, All file types and they duplicate JPG files are found. Repeat that selecting two volumes with known duplicates between them but not within them and no items are found. I've experimented for an hour or so with strategies but still no success. The application is obviously very powerful and I hope to grasp it eventually. I have got some results but I'm unconfident why. JPEG filter does not allow JPG files for example. For now though I'm unable to achieve what I want. So I will not buy until I have. (Version 2.0.1)

STEVE FRAWLEY1 I have used this for years and find it invaluable. Giuseppe has always provided great support. With over 40,000 photos and well over 60,000 iTunes entries, finding and relocating or removing duplicates can be a massive task without TidyUp! Nothing else comes close to the powerful functionality. It can do very complex file comparisons and file management. Tip for new users: stay away from deleting files and just move them if you are not sure what you are doing. The only reason it appears confusing is because it has so many options to meet so many needs. FIles have so many levels of duplicity. The same song in iTunes, for example, can be one of many bitrates and types and lengths and TidyUp! helps in keeping what you want, be it the 'best', smallest or whatever. Thanks Giuseppe! CORPSECORPS Though i can see there's significant power here, Tidy Up! has got to be one of the least intuitive apps i've used. With strategies, baskets, smart baskets, so many panes, so many collapsible sections, the odd way inclusions and exclusions are specified, the way all the parts interact, and the peculiar style of the resulting reports, methods of applying actions to results, and frequent need to further search the results, once a search is completed i'm so unclear about what i'm really seeing in the result, i don't dare actually tell the thing to do any deletions. I'm somewhat disappointed there aren't features for locating duplicate emails (such as possible spam or group crossposts) which typically have differing headers and even some content, and can't be located via external information like file size, name, date, and the like. Every time i get this out to give it another try, i just find myself frustrated and confused all over again. It feels like having to learn how to use an entire office suite when you just want something to keep a few text notes. (Version 1.4.6)

GIUSEPPEGIU Just a clarification to the arguments of Mr. CRSOUSER. #1 I can understand the preferences that an user have for a kind of algorithm (those algorithms can be added in the future), however, after more than 10 years of duplicate finders development I never received from the users or found (by me or by the beta tester group) a report of a false positive using the CRC32 algorithm. #2 There is nothing to say about an opinion. #3 Here there is a confusion and is that, if an user chooses a disk (let's say Macintosh HD) and excludes from the scan (using the x icon at the left of the item) all visible items but the Users folder and then searches for invisible items, Tidy Up! reports not only the items of the Users folder but also those invisible items which reside at the same level of the Users folder. This is not a bug. www.hyperbolicsoftware.com (Version 1.4.5)

CRSOUSER To Mr. TidyUp Developer, You just don't seem to get it and our blinded by your own habits of being the developer and using it over a long period. It is the reason there are QA departments and usability studies done on applications. If a user defines a search path say: MacHD:Users/Username/Pictures and tell it to check that directory for duplicates I don't want to see the duplicates in every directory on MacHD or for every other user. I know how to deal with Hidden Files and Visible files.. but I give it a path (even going the extra steps of defining a path and all the extra steps of excluding).. it should only return items in the specific path I specified. If I or any other user give it a path, I only want to know the items under that path. How hard can that be to understand !?!? (Version 1.4.9)
| Feb 5 2009 |
GIUSEPPEGIU It is not hard to understand, in fact the application already works in this manner. I confirm what I said in the original post: there is not a bug that reports items outside the chosen locations. www.hyperbolicsoftware.com (Version 1.4.9)

XENOPHILE Your reply is a textbook example of the attitude that leads to unintuitive, overly complex GUIs: usability is just an "opinion," which is your polite way of saying the complainers are too stupid to figure out your masterpiece. Developing an intuitive GUI is an art that most developers learn through lots of hard work, trial and error, and the study of user feedback. Do you have what it takes to even try? (Version 2.0)
| Oct 5 2008 |
CRSOUSER The application works for the most part, and the developer is quick to personally respond to questions.. but the application lacks some key features and usability that I think are essential in this type of application. I paid for the full featured program My #1 peeve is this application lacks advanced direct comparison matching like SHA-1 or MD5. Almost every other duplicate checker and backup program for Mac, PC, Linux, etcetera use this methodology and through experience I just don't trust name, mod time, or CRC32 dup checking. My #2 peeve is the overall usability of the application and trying to define what you want to check. It dumped down way too much and to me is annoying. I just want to point at a directory and say go check it for dups with these options. The basket system and being partially limited to pre-defined searches and custom labeling of tasks are annoying. My #3, in the registered version I am using 1.4.5 there is a serious bug of if I say to check for dups in folder in my desktop it searches all directories above the directory I am trying to search as well unless I add it as a specific 'search path' on the side view. This could very easily lead to false positives or unintended deletions. I crawled through it for a task I needed to complete very near term... but am on the search for a better product that applies the keep it simple and do it affective methodology. Thus I am being kind when I give it 3 Stars. (Version 1.4.5)

HANK2 I paid for it and use it, Pismo (900mhz) and more recently Mini Intel. Still, what I wish for needs either a smarter user (-: or better workflow with the software. Find all the files that are dupes. Then note which folders they're in. Then show me all the _folders_ that contain one or more identical files. Show the folders that are identical content. Let me shuffle files until I have eliminated the dupes and left all the files in the one folder I want to keep. Now, I just end up with lots of folders that are almost the same, one file may be duplicated. Yes, if I'd done backups in a more organized way since the first CP/M 8" floppy machine I started with, I wouldn't need this. Who knew? (Version 1.4.2)

STEVE FRAWLEY This amazingly powerful program has saved me many, many hours of tedious and almost impossible work. This update allowed me to find and delete almost 1000 duplicates in an iPhoto Library (new iLife '08 ver. 7.0.2) out of almost 35,000 after I had merged two libraries. An earlier version removed over 5,000 exact duplicates in an iTunes Library close to 100,000 songs. It also updates the programs' proprietary database to reflect the deletions. Be sure to 'delete' the dupes (Scary, but the items remain in the trash for recovery for backup reassurance until you empty the trash!). Merely 'moving' files messes up the program update function built into Tidy Up!. That integration with iPhoto and iTunes is invaluable. Beware some operations that update those databases can be time-consuming. The Author's support has been fantastic also. The program is flexible for many applications regarding extensive complicated file comparisons, locating duplicates on various drives and generally saving lots of drive space. Remember, however, that what this program does is very powerful and SOME ACTIONS CAN'T BE UNDONE so if you screw up, you are the one responsible! BACK UP VALUABLE FILES BEFORE PROCEEDING!!!!! P.S. KURT L. When I first saw this advertised on Macintouch, I thought fooey, I can cook up a Unix shell script to do this in a half an hour. Well, I eventually got a script that worked, but the end result was not very user-friendly: I had to print out a list of files and then go hunting for them in the Finder. I decided to download Tidy Up! to try it out. What I found is that there is a big difference between getting the job done, and getting the job done efficiently. Tidy Up! not only finds the duplicate files, but it helps you deal with them afterwards: you can drag the duplicates over to Baskets, and then perform an action on the whole Basket, or you can deal with files one by one. The actions you can perform on files and baskets of files are burn them to a disk; delete them; or move/copy them. You can also export an HTML list of found files. There are lots of nice little touches; Tidy Up! can show you instantly the contents of a file (for an amazing number of proprietary formats even); it shows you the path to a duplicate file as a sequence of folders, similar to the way that the Finder's search function does, and you can double click on a folder to open it in the Finder; the application makes nice use of the Aqua interface guidelines, which allows you to customize many things about the display of information (what columns are visible, how much space to allocate to different informational parts of the window, etc). It even makes a nice skittering noise when you throw something away. All in all, it's a much more worthwhile application than I first thought. If you're the sort of person who likes to have a place for everything, and everything in its place, and you're adding files to your system on a regular basis, Tidy Up! will be money well spent. I should also mention that I had a few questions about the program, and the developer wrote back to me promptly the next day with useful answers. (Version 1.1.10)

BRETTD Tidy Up helped me consolidate several "I'll drag this folder to this fileserver" backups, and helped me make sure I got everything off my old Powerbook when I moved to a Macbook. File Buddy wasn't very helpful, as I only wanted to delete copies on one particular drive. Tidy Up did that flawlessly; I create a smart folder with a "Tidy Up label" set for the drive I'm removing duplicates from. I then tag the contents of the Smart Folder, then look at "all files found" and make sure it's doing the right thing. For photos, I use filename, data fork size, and data fork contents. I think a couple of the prior comments are outdated; the trial didn't seem to be time-limited, but rather wouldn't let me take action on more than a few files. It was plenty to show me it'd do what I wanted it to. I gave a "5" for reliability because it has not crashed once; I've compared folders with 100,000+ items without much difficulty. BY I have been using DoubletScan on several drives, each with several partition volumes, OK. In some searches, I have had a few thousand dups, and in those instances, it does tend to run a bit slower as it hands data off to system for deleting marked dup entries. I would suggest as a work-around, if possible, that you try comparing sub-folder groups so that total number of dups may be less. And, write to the developer giving all relevant tech details. (I have written several times over about two years that I've been registered user, and he has always responded. In most cases he has corrected bugs reported fairly quickly, and he has implemented several enhancements I suggested. ) (Version 10.2.4)

MICHAEL SIDORIC JH is right --> Doublet Scan ROCKS! Doublet Scan has always been fast, but this version seems faster, and with new (excellent) filtering by date etc. takes a lot of the work (and guess work) out of culling duplicate files. Minor criticism: GUI could be cleaner and clearer, and a new icon might enhance 'perceived' value of this fine utility. BRUCE Y. I registered the program and have written the author, Giuseppe -- he responds quickly. Do write directly to him. (And the program works well.) P.S. re. what about your thousands of duplicate files -- It really depends on how your computer has been setup up, and what the particular duplicate files are. Perhaps you have a used computer? Or one in which you have several duplicated folders? Are you new to the Macintosh? What system version are you running. If you send the author answers to these questions, he may be able to give you some direction. -Bruce. (Version 10.1.3)

MEGAFILESKEEPER I have made some test with this new version and Panther: WOW!! With the double processor I have all my real duplicate in a bunch of seconds! (more than 380.000 files compared!). I am also surprised from the speed I have had scanning a peecee HD running WinPro2000. Great work! (Version 10.1)

ED If you're unix-savvy enough, there is open source commandline software to do the same thing. http://netdial.caribe.net/~adrian2/fdupes.html (Version 10.1)

JIM WEIL Doublet Scan is a cute little program that has an interface that seems to do with it claims to. It has a nice GUI and plenty of features within its realm. However, like so many other programs in duplicates the features found in many other applications, and in this case, for what I feel is an excess of cost. At $30, this program does what one of the pull-down menus use does in File Buddy. This is not to say that this program is bad, just poor value for many users. and definitely is hands above Spring Cleaning. For those of you who don't remember, Spring Cleaning, was a commercial program by Aladdin Software, that took much of what Doublet Scan, is trying to do, but made into a much more complicated in confusing process - that is, if it worked all. Numerous updates to the product only made it almost tolerable. While File Buddy is somewhat more expensive ( $50) it contains many more useful features which in my opinion making it a better value overall. Both programs require some user knowledge to know what to enter for match characteristics. Doublet Scan however, gives you more of an interactive interface and prompts for the information. For the nieve computer user, this could be a showstopper feature, and make it worth the 30 bucks. However with File Buddy get lot more bang for your buck, even though the interface is not as friendly. This is not to say that of the interface in File Buddy is bad, it just isn't as interactive. Since I actually downloaded and launched the product I will rate it, even though I don't plan to use it. As a comparison, I would give File Buddy the following rating: 5, 3, 5, 5.
