MRGANDO  This application is amazing, the price can't be beat, and it's packed with cool features. Low on memory usage too, the "automate" on connect has always proven very useful for me. Also the stability has always been rock solid for me.

Thank you for this, and keep up the good work.

KKNOPP  BTW a tip or hint to the people who run the #Colloquy IRC channel.

Be a bit nicer to new people that show up. Acting pretentious or "above" those that come in and don't automatically fit into your "clique" doesn't do your application or the time spent on it justice.

Remember, if it wasn't for us, you'd not have a userbase. I was on there earlier and saw two people that weren't cussing, saying anything BAD about the application, or trolling at all. But they were being treated poorly by those that ran the channel.

Having a great application like Colloquy wont matter if those that are involved act badly toward those interested.

Not going to name names. You know who you are.

KKNOPP  Wow I really thought this program was dead in the water. Glad I was mistaken. I am back to using it now instead of Snak.

Colloquy is probably the most MODERN and mac like of all IRC clients. It seems the others are stuck in 1995 and haven't really tried to improve on the idea at all. Other than scripting abilities and aliases and such. I've been wanting REAL emoticons in IRC for ages. And Colloquy lets you turn them off if you are annoyed by them as well. (Choice is good)

The only real bugs I had was the preferences would "stick" sometime and I couldn't get them open. Especially the Appearance panel.

JOHN NOWAK  Can't even get it to add an SILC server in the latest version (2.1). The join room button seems broken as well... manually joining in the console seems okay. Had to delete preferences twice so far as it crashes on start. Same experience on two different computers on Leopard.

Someone, please write a STABLE SILC client! I'll pay for it!

JOHN NOWAK  I take it back -- This doesn't even deserve three starts. Just had to trash my prefs because Colloquy keeps crashing on launch. SILC support is barely functional. Buddy lists don't work right. Iconography in the Connections window is insane... I still have no idea how to tell if something is connecting or not. What on earth is the lightning bolt arrow supposed to mean? Garbage garbage garbage! I'm going back to irssi.

JOHN NOWAK  Colloquy is a mixed bag.

On the plus side, it looks nice, works nice (mostly) once you have it set up, and most importantly for me, it has SILC support.

Unfortunately, it has a number of issues. Appearance preferences usually do not update unless you restart the app. There's a bug in tab handling if you use the tabbed window mode (dragging a new tab to the left side jumps it to the right). It crashes on me once a day or so. It doesn't give much indication of how a connection attempt is going, especially on startup. It keeps creating a transcripts folder even though I have logging disabled. Etc etc...

If you need SILC, this is definitely your best bet as nothing else exists beyond irssi-silc or gaim. If you don't need it, well... it is still probably your best bet. Just get used to the annoyances. It's a shame there isn't a more solid IRC client for the Mac. I'd happy pay $15-25 for one if there was.

8BIT-WINTERMUTE  I switched to this from X-Chat Aqua. It's mac-like enough.

The only things that bug me are the growl-style popups that are a bit annoying, and I wish the nick column could automatically be as wide as it needed to be instead of me having to go back into the options to keep changing it. Other than that, this is the best mac client I've used for IRC.

It sits at 2% cpu use on my dual core iMac BTW not 65%

LEONCAHUN  2% cpu is only true when you use it _very_ carefully, like just letting drop in chat-messages, etc.

But: whenif you scroll in populated windows, when you change themes, etc. cpu-drawing jumps up very high (like 100% on a Core Duo), leaving the app temporarily unresponsive, therefore unusable, at least warming up your Intel-Mac.

It's a pity since otherwise this app could be _the_ OS X IRC-app.

But please fix ressource-management first. Thx.

LEONCAHUN  The app is nice, though it should be easier to switch views (tab-based view, drawer-based view, etc).

However, what is a problem is the amount of cpu-cycles this puppy draws. In Activity Monitor it jumps up and down, crossing the 65% level (on a 2GHz Core Duo)! Come on, that's an IRC app (and I am talking about being connected to _one_ server, and _four_ channels at a time; not like 20 servers, and 80 channels).

Bottom line: this app warms up my Macbook Pro more than Safari under heavy use; comparable to Aperture preparing some slideshow-previews, or stuff. I dont think that's acceptable.

PO60T  The best looking, most mac-like IRC client available for OSX.

I love the customisability of Colloquoy. There are some nice themes from Adium that would look good in IRC.

Some features I would like to see in the next version.

-fserve support, !triggers and stuff.

-handle the user list in a draw like Conversation with the Sidebar Window interface.

-set colour of your name. (maybe you can do this already?)

-Fix file transfer. If you clear a finished transfer, the feedback of the remaining downloads stops updating even though the file is still DL. If you want to refresh you have to keep clicking the clear button.

Otherwise it is a pleasure to use.

CHIEFTED  Have tried a couple of irc chat clients and this one is the best hands down.

Good graphical interface.

Easy set up compared to other IRC clients (compared to Newspeak, X-Chat Aqua, Conversation).

I had it installed and running in about 3 mins.

Haven't had a problem with it yet but I haven't tried DCC yet either but when I set it up it looked like it was working properly.

TENTHUMBS  In time, this will be the application all other IRC-Clients are measured against - on any platform.

I have been grabbing the nightly builds of this app for a while now, and are pleased to see it is being actively developed.

The way it takes advantage of core osx technologies should be an inspiration for all developers out there - from the usage of Growl notification-bezels to the styling by xslt/css. The applescript-library of this app is huuge.

While some IRC poweruser might still find it a bit lacking in a few areas, i think this one deserves the 5 stars in all areas.

Last but not least, it is open source, so you can checkout the code by SVN your self if you think you can contribute.

ANONYMOUS  I don't think developers should release software with cryptic build numbers. It really is better to stick to the widely understood x.x.x convention. If Colloquy isn't ready for a 2.0.1 designation, for example, then it probably isn't ready for public consumption and should be seeded longer among beta testers until it *is* ready. Or if it is ready for public consumption (which it appears to be), just release it as 2.0.1, 2.0.2, etc. But hey, that's just my opinion. ;)

ANONYMOUS  We know that higher build numbers are newer -- that's not the point. The person who mentioned that this is an open source project is also missing the point. The "dot dot dot" scheme as s/he calls it (um, there's only two dots, but anyway...) is indeed quite workable, has nothing to do with marketing, and makes much more sense than releasing as build numbers to the general public. Of course there is a new build every day -- but a daily build should be a bleeding edge option for intrepid adventurers and not for posting on MacUpdate. Bust out your Subversion and CVS if that's what floats your boat. When it's ready for public consumption, call it 2.0.1 and release. This has nothing to do with marketing; it's just simpler and more intuitive. But like I said before, that's just my opinion. ;)

NAMAN  Looks to be shaping up nicely, and I recommend it to any OS X user new to IRC, but it's still lacking in a few important respects, enough to still seem a bit too 'basic' to those who've been using IRC for years. Make scripting a wee bit easier, have better online documentation (especially where scripting is concerned), and better integrate server-consoles (currently, they don't follow the themes one uses, and they also seem to lack certain things I consider vital, like ping-times and notification on reception of ping.) For now, I'm sticking with X-Chat Aqua, but I can see myself switching to Colloquy when the time comes.

DAVID GORMAN  I've been using IRC for years and years, and more years. Before I "switched" to Mac a year and a half ago, I had always used Xircon for IRC. I always liked the feel of it more than mIRC and others. Once I started using OS X, I found that X-Chat was very similar to Xircon, so I stuck with that. I had seen Colloquy around the 'net a few times, but I always ignored it, figuring I'd feel the same way about it that I felt about mIRC during my Windows days.

I finally decided to try out the nightly build of it out of pure curiosity. Well, I'm a changed man. Thanks to its extreme level of customization, I was able to get it working and looking exactly the way I wanted. Once I felt comfortable using it, I started discovering how unique of an IRC client it truly is.

From the buddy list to the alerts to the CSS/XSLT based customization, Colloquy is amazing. It's not just the best IRC application I've used, but it's one of the best applications I've seen on OS X period. That's saying a lot. To top it all off, it's free and open-source.

I can't thank the developers enough for working so hard to create Colloquy. It's amazing as is, and I can't wait to see how it continues to evolve. They'll definitely see a donation from me soon!

Make sure to grab the newest nightly build ( http://colloquy.info/downloads/nightly.zip ) and some third-party styles for it ( http://colloquy.info/community/index.php?ColloquyStyles )!
