FRODO_LIFE hm face recognition is pretty average and very unreliable comes up with many wrong faces even after training 100 pics or so. Also for people with bigger libraries it's a lot of work the tag the faces and pics. took some shoots with my Iphone and pictures taken in the same office give two quite different geo tag addresses. in my opinion not worth buying the update. KERNELPANIC I tried iPhoto 09 today and it looks great. especially with new faces recognition feature and maps. However unless your camera or iphone has a GPS module, it'll be very hard to pinpoint the exact location of your photo, because you're only allowed to select from an autocomplete dropdown list of known locations. Smaller places are not on the list. Even when typed in a county name and google map appeared below, I was unable to move the marker to a desired location. what a shame. I will have to agree with IGREG. Apart from iphoto, which is the default photo manager for my macbook pro I don't use any other iLife product. (Version 09)

IGREG It is time to start selling these apps separately as well. The only one I have any use for is iPhoto. I bet there are a lot out there who only use iPhoto. Sell iPhoto for about $35 and I will upgrade from 08 to 09. (Version 09)

BM1 I love all the new features in iLife'06 but it's very very unstable. iMovie HD: This app wont even start up. I've deleted everything on my computer concerning iMovie and reinstalled several times. I've also repaired all my disk permissions as well. Still this app will not run. I loads 80 percent of the "new project" and then crashes. did the same thing on existing projects too.... I hope there is a update soon. Anyone else having this issue??? Garageband: This app runs fine until you push the media button on the right side of the window... Then smoke starts billowing out and the engine starts to sputter then.... BAM... CRASH! iWeb: This is amazing. I have not had any issues with this application at all. I didn't read any instructions and built a new website in 20 min. Good Job Apple (1 out of 5 isn't bad). iPhoto: I haven't had any issues. I am still disappointed in Apple though... STILL NO SUPPORT FOR SUB FOLDERS!!! YOU CAN MAKE SUBFOLDERS BUT IT WILL NOT IMPORT THE NICELY ORGANIZED PHOTO LIBRARY YOU HAVE. PFFT.... I KNOW I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO'S BEEN BEGGING FOR THIS. Oh well... Looks like they just want you to use Aperture.... I haven't used the other iApps but I started up DVD and all seemed fine. I hope there is an update soon... Other than the issues that I've mentioned.. This is an awesome update. (Version 06)

BM1 I found that the reason iMovie and Garageband were crashing is because there was a corrupt file in my iPhoto library. I had to rebuild my entire iPhoto Library because of this. I lost all my Albums... But at least the apps work now! :D (Version 06)

PETER NEFF I have had major iphoto problems since installing ilife 05. Random photos disappear from slideshows, and also can no longer be edited. The only show up on the thumbnail screen. I have been looking for a solution and have found that I am not alone. Beware !!!!

PENELOPE JORDAN Help! I bought iLife and a PikaOne external DVD-R drive in the hopes that I could finally back up some home movies using iDVD. Now I find that I can't install iDVD because I don't have a superdrive on my G4 laptop. The installer simply installs all the other components. Is there a way round this? (Version 04)

µø?´¥ Use a utility called "Pacifist" to extract and install the iDVD package from your installation disk. Then look for a hack to enable external burning (the hack consists of two files, "Hurtz" and "Phurtz", which go into the top level of your home folder). (Version 05)

im not sure for this... but exist an utilitie called "PatchBurn" ( http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16466 )... now, you can make unsupported burners to be used directly with Mac OS X and "iApplications"... check it! i hope you can FIX your problem...

C. MILLER Just a note regarding Garage Band. Even though the program doesn't record and playback Midi notes to an external midi instrument, the focus seems to be an introduction to basic sequencing and a lot of fun, even for those who don't really know how to play. My problem is this: If you hook up an external midi keyboard controller and attempt to play the internal instruments, the program has no quantize option. This is a very simple option that has been in the world of sequencing for over 20 years and helps those of us who don't have perfect rythm achieve an in-sync performance without having to go back and fix all the notes that may have strayed from the tempo. It's a very common and almost taken-for-granted tool used in bigger sequencers and I was a bit disappointed not to find such a common device found in this program. Let's hope the next upgrade will provide this (and the ability to send MIDI signals from the program back out to external MIDI devices. (Version 04)

DIRK CRAFFORD iLife 04 is great, especially for the designer who needs to use it every day of the week, I work almost everyday with all the applications in iLife, but I found a couple of minor things that still needs to be perfected by apple: using iPhoto is great to quickly get your images off your digital camera and print them out with out any hassles, but sometimes iPhoto don't like all kinds of cameras like the Canon SD100 sometimes don't want to work with iPhoto and let it quit unexpectedly! The only solution I found is to use a media card reader, they work great! iTunes is great like always, only problem I found is that iTunes can't always find the information on songs when you insert an audio disk. Garageband is awsome and very addictive and great for when you don't have much work to do. iMovie is also great for making a really cool presentation or screensaver, just the export fucntion that needs to be looked at, cause it's doesn't export properly sometimes. iDVD is also very cool, exept for the fact that you need a internal DVD writer to burn your project to disk and that it gives alot of write errors and in effect cost you alot of money, but I find the iDVD from iLife is much better and stable from the previous version that comes with OSX! I've tried all the tricks and solutions everyone has tried, to burn a disk without a superdrive on my G4 to a external DVD writer, but none seem to work. But this far works without a problem on my G5 with the built in superdrive. Although some people do have problems with the G5 and iDVD, here is a solution I found on a discussion board: 1. Delete iDVD from you hard drive. 2. Open users folder, open your folder, open library, open preferences 3. Delete the file com.apple.idvd.plist 4. Insert you original system disc that came with your G5 5. Double click install Applications & Classic Support 6. Click through and install on your Main Hard Drive. This will install Software Restore on you hard drive. 7. You can skip steps 4 6 if you already have Software Restore in your Utilities Folder under Applications. 8. If you used the disc method the Restore window will automatically open up after the install. If you didnt use the disc method then double click the Software Restore application in your Utilities folder. 9. Hit Continue when the Apple appears in the window. 10. You will now have to have your system disc that came with the computer in your disc tray to go any further. So if you dont have it in the drive put it in now. 12. WHAT IS THIS iDVD?? YOU MEAN YOU DIDNT HAVE TO BUY iLIFE IT WAS THERE ALL THE TIME!! Thats right iDVD does not install with iTunes, iMovie or iPhoto, you have to install iDVD all by itself!! But you Dont Need iLife. Infact iLifes version on iDVD wont work with your G5!! 13. Check iDVD and click install. 14. Open iDVD and your project that you couldnt burn. 16. Watch in amazement as you make your first dvd with no problems what so ever!! Another thing that apple needs to resolve is that your finished DVD created in iDVD doesn't always work in all types of DVD players, I found that they always play in really cheap DVD players but not so often in the average very expensive DVD player! BRIAN GANNINGER As long as external DVD burner uses the same Panasonic "SuperDrive" hardware it's compatible with iDVD. As for write errors, provided you don't interrupt the lengthy burn it goes just fine. I've never coastered a DVD with iDVD yet, and I use it to produce prototype DVDs for client mockups. With regards to the 'tip', this will restore a previous version of iDVD and does not resolve any iDVD 4 problems, nor can it be guaranteed to work well with other upgraded products (see my review for notable backward incompatibilities.) IF YOU USE THIS TECHNIQUE, BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA! You may have to revert back to other previous applications as well and iPhoto 2 won't read an iPhoto 4 library (I don't know about iMovie, I haven't tested retrograding it as I don't see a need :P) This primarily applies if you use the integrated iLife features such as the Media pane which pulls in content from each application in the suite (barring GB.) iTunes reads the beginning of a stamped CD (burned CD-Rs may or may not work) and sends the identification to Gracenote's CDDB, an Internet-based service, which provides the results. If a CD isn't in their catalog, or is mis-identified, scratched, etc. iTunes may not recognize it. (Version 04)

JOEL NELSON Just got iLife '04 yesterday. Looks like a great upgrade. Installation note: I bought my copy on eBay; it's an official Apple CD (not DVD) with iMovie, iTunes, and iPhoto. There are no problems installing it on a computer with no DVD drive, but if you try to install the CD version (w/o GarageBand and iDVD) on a computer with a DVD drive, an error comes up and it says it can't be installed (you need the version that comes on DVD). Workaround: Get TinkerTool (search MacUpdate) and set Finder to display all hidden/system files. Then open the CD from Finder, go to the Packages folder, and install the iTunes.pkg, iPhoto.mpkg, and iMovie.pkg files. See the iMovie product listing at MacUpdate for another hint. (Version 04)

BRIAN GANNINGER Apple is known for making great software and the spirit of iLife '04 firmly embodies this. The features are unique and usually useful and the integration top notch. This review will hopefully present a taste of the good (which many others have and will continue to share) will touching on many of the day-to-day issues that arise from using all the applications of the suite. The speed improvements in iPhoto are greatly welcomed since it can actually function now, but on the other hand, image quality does suffer in this faster app. Rendezvous enabled sharing is great, but I know personally I'm not often in a room of Macs wanting to share files over a LAN, so it's limited in usefulness. 2 desperately needed features: folders to group albums and passwords for albums, are still not present. Another note for .Mac users: Homepage editing of posted pages only works if the page has the exact same filename & title as the album, and typically needs to be have been generated by iPhoto 4. Editing a page that's already posted still requires either trashing it, working with an HTML editor, or guessing it through with their homepage editor on the Web. Tip: iPhoto indicates when your library has unsaved changes with the little black dot in the close button... but you can't save directly, you need to quit. iMovie and iDVD's performance was not highlighted in the presentations because for the most part it has not only been ignored, in some cases (iDVD) it has gotten magnitudes slower and refuses to work on some machines (such as the G5.) Tip: if you import clips via iSight (in my experience, could happen with other sources I'd bet) and play back with iMovie the audio and video tracks will go out of sync until you rest the app for a moment or restart it. Garageband is an amazing concept, and incredibly easy and fun to use. It is quirky and it is a 1.0 application. Unfortunately it also lacks the typical Apple polish including 3 conflicts UI styles (GB special, Aqua milky [loop browser], and Aqua) It also can be bullish when its playing. With 6 tracks and a preview running it told me my CPU was no longer up to the task (although it is a 1.33 Powerbook with a GB of RAM) After re-opening the file (and re-launching the app since it's single window and quits on close) it played beautifully, but this is what you can expect. Adjusting volume to be consistent with what you'd expect of any song in your iTunes library is also an interesting experience since each track has a volume and there's also the master volume. Tip: Exports are in large lossless AIFF files so remember to convert to AAC or MP3 inside iTunes and to then delete the old exported AIFF if you aren't using it. iLife is great to use, and well worth the $50 if you use the core apps on a daily or weekly basis. Garageband is a great app to play with and is highly addictive, which is why it has a $100 accessory pack and several similarly priced accessories. A more robust list of the 'unpolished' side of iLife is available at: http://homepage.mac.com/brianganninger/iblog/B1946263122/C1846609610/E1872091694/index.html Hopefully this has given you a more balanced view of the good and bad of iLife '04. BRIAN GANNINGER iPhoto tip: When upgrading to iPhoto 4 you become incompatible with previous versions. This includes picture sharing via CD or DVD. The recipient of the picture-containing disc needs to also be running iPhoto 4 or they will be unable to view it in iPhoto. iMovie tip: split your clips into manageable segments to make rendering quicker and restoring easier. Remember to apply effects such as brightness and volume changes to all clips of a set though, or they may seem out of sync with the rest of your project. GB tip: don't be afraid to change your beats per minute (BPM)... it's easily editable from the blue LED panel where the tempo is via the slider and by matching your tempo to your music's mood you can create beautiful harmony (provided your mix is harmonious :-D) (Version 04)

ANONYMOUS iMovie crashes constantly when importing video from a digital camcorder. iDVD also crashes, failing to produce DVDs. This is by far the worst software Apple has ever released. BLEMISHED APPLE iPhoto seems to be getting slower and slower (on a dual 800). iMovie has buggy sinc. Idiotic that all current Apple monitors are 16X9, but Apple's consumer multimedia products do not support anamorphic video to fill such 16X9 screens. Finally, note that Apple started charging a fee after running the competition out of the market by first offering the applications for free. (Version )
