CUCHULAINN  Excellent App. With every Mac I have purchased over the past few years, Menu Meters is one of the first "must have" apps I download.

I really appreciate the developer for providing this app and continuing to do so for free. Outstanding!

Does anyone really use a Mac without at least the CPU 'thermometer' in the menubar?

MACNERD1984  Yep; I do. I have no interest in how hot the processor is running - Can't do much about it anyway, and I'll hear the fans kick in anyway. I use CPU Percentage and that's that. Anyway, I know when my MBP is running hot, because It scorches my genitalia as it sits on my lap; kind of like my own temperature sensor.

But what happened to the display? There no longer seems to be an option to disable anti-aliasing and so they look blurry now, please bring this back. Also the thermometer seems to be different, fatter and not as tall as it was...

PDMARSH  I've used this for years, up through MacOS X 10.5.8 and it's worked great. However, with the owner silent for so long, I have to assume we won't be getting a 10.6 version any time soon. I also use iStat and they have a similar product called iStat menus that they say they ARE working on a version for 10.6, so you may want to give it a look.

NYMPHE  You probably didn't read developers site:

http://www.ragingmenace.com/index.html

MenuMeters 1.3 does not run on Snow Leopard because the process that hosts the MenuMeters plugins (SystemUIServer) is now 64-bit. There are a number of subtle 64-bit bugs in MenuMeters so more than a simple recompile is needed.

I'm working on an update to MenuMeters and expect to have a public beta shortly after Snow Leopard retail availability.

seems incompatible with leopard/boot camp...network info in the menubar resets after reboot.

hasn't been updated in a while, so i'm off to look for a replacement. it's served me well, and who knows, it may continue if i can't find a suitable replacement. though i think istatpro may have had similar functions (going by memory - so don't shoot).

HOBY  Excellent little bit of code. My menubar is getting kind of crowded these days but menu meters are just so very useful! And with all the customizing you can do, they can either take up a little or a lot of bar space, depending on your needs.

They seem to use up far less CPU, RAM and any other three letter acronym than other metering/monitoring tools I've used - and they're configurable.

I also like this software because it doesn't try to all kinds of crazy useless things that it shouldn't. It does what it does and it does it well. And it's free.

STARBORNERANGER  I've used Menu Meters for several years now and have had no issues with it whatsoever. This mini app has become such a common part of my Mac that I would feel lost without it. I run the network meter constantly, and the disk and CPU meters offer all the functionality of Apple's own monitors without all the clutter. The tools can be used for monitoring, troubleshooting, or simply having fun with your computer. A really great program, especially for the price (free!)

MARIO  This is the FIRST application that I install on every new Mac. Great, stable. I feel blind without it. 5 stars.

Probably there are same issue with 10.4.3. I've had no problems with a macMini and a Powerbook 17 (both 10.4.3), but with a brand new iMacG5 (the one with the remote) the cpu meter became stuck at 100% after few minutes of use (but it's wrong, activity monitor reports normal values). DOUGLAS ENGELBART  MenuMeters is so insanely great. Dear Mr.Jobs, this should have been done by Apple! Just a few proposals:

1) The network's B/s values should be displayed on the left side instead of the right side because of the spaces on slower modems/isdn.

2) The progress graphics for the network throughput are cool, but optional/ additional horizontal LED bars would be cool, too:

Tx: |========––––––––––––|

Rx: |==================––|

Then it shall be

ANONYMOUS  I've seen a few reviews of this talking about how little cpu MenuMeters uses... These people either need to learn a bit more about OSX, or they need to look harder.

With MenuMeters installed, the window manager process regularly spikes up to ~20% cpu usage! MenuMeters is a menu extra / NSStatusBarItem, which means it runs 'inside' other system processes, like SystemUIServer and the window server.

Removing MenuMeters and reverting back to Apple's Activity Monitor (the best combination of features/low-impact I've found) lowered the CPU usage down to around 5%.

I used to love this thing, but now that it's uninstalled I'm noticing how much 'snappier' things are...

ADEN  Here's an example of why using MenuMeters uses up worse cpu time than something like XRG. XRG is niced, so whatever cpu it does use, it'll give up if requested. MenuMeters, in addition to the time its application process gives up, uses time inside the SystemUIServer and WindowServer processes, which may not be as nice as a normal application cpu monitor.

MenuMeters is a fine utility, and if you want your graphs in the menu bar, there's not much alternative. Just be aware of the issues involved.

ALEX  If it's possible, a graph that showed up as an image in the menu (like login images in the user menu) would be cool/better.

I like it the way it is though, freakin' awesome! It's lightweight, which is the way to go. People who watch their cpu activity don't want an app that takes up too much of their precious system resources, and this app definately doesn't.

JUSTIN  This little FREE utility should be in every poweruser's menu bar. Did I mention it was free too? It is very customizable, and provides USEFUL system information. Your CPU usage, RAM and Disk usage, and Network throughput all taking up minimal space in your menubar. You choose whether you which ones you want shown and how they are presented - graphs, percentages, etc.

Besides the stream of system info it is provinding you, each of the icons in the menubar are also menus to the related applications. For instance if you click on the CPU usage icon it pulls down a menu with more detailed information plus a choice to open the Console or Activity Monitor. Very very slick and handy!

I've installed this on powerbooks, G4 and G5 towers and haven't had any problems.

ED  I have a dual G5 with 2.5GB of RAM running under the new 10.2.8 release.

Menu Meters seems to have trouble showing correct memory usage...right now I have 5 open and active apps and MM shows 1994MB free and only 54MB in use! Wow! My machine is super efficient if that's true. :)

Other times it shows 3145MB used and 2249MB free with 64MB of swap...the math just doesn't add up.

It worked fine on my old dual G4 with 2GB of ram.

Just a caveat for the G5 users out there.

SWEATY EDDIE  Absolutely excellent! Until today, I used a competing shareware system status monitoring tool, but I threw it right in the trash as soon as I tried out MenuMeters. This utility makes clever use of the otherwise wasted menu bar space, so you don't need to fret about floating status windows. It's almost absurdly customizable (optional anti-aliasing on a per-item basis? OK...) and doesn't stray into inappropriate domains like incoming mail that are (IMHO) better handled elsewhere. Just superb CPU, network, disk, and memory monitoring. I hate to follow the herd and give it five stars in every category, but MenuMeters has earned it!
