SIRJAMES I had to manually uninstall the program. I started to have shut down problems on two of the computers i was using and been trying to fix the issue and last night i check the activity monitor to see what i could find as the problem. I no longer use little snitch and uses app zap to uninstall the app and noticed that there was a little snitch file that was running so i tried to quite it, it would not quiet so i forced quiet it and it still would not quiet. I i looks at the inspect window and found all the hidden little snitch files (one in the library at the root level and one in your user folder, once i deleted them and restarted the computer and then emptied trash and then verified the program was not running. I gather the program was not shutting down properly when I would shut down the computer. Word of advice if u start to have shut down issues try totally uninstalling the app and see if your problems are fixed. When u delete the files only delete the ones that actually say little snitch - because the program does seem to attach to other core services of your mac (most of which i noticed are the same apps i am having problems repairing permissions on). I think the program does a little more than a firewall - kinda believe it is a mailware program. Maybe the problem was fixed in the newest version but i would never use it again. If others are having the same issues try manually deleting all the files and see it that fixes your issues. (Version 2.2)

LOUNGE DELUXE LS already phones home when you enter your registration number, so I don't see how an update function would be contrary to the function of LS. I mean you'd still get warned by LS that it tries to contact its servers to check for an updated version. And I've never come across an app with an update function build in that didn't have the option to be switched on or off. (Version 2.2)

MACTECHHEAD I love this handy tool. But I have one giant complaint. Version 2.0.5 was the last version that worked properly when logged in as the System Administrator. Every since version 2.1 to now the root user has no rules, you cannot import any rules and even attempting to use the default rules results with a blank set of rules. Permissions repair does nothing nor deleting the folders Little Snitch uses . (Version 2.1.4)

M2 There's a minor bug in version 2.1.3 (potentially not fixed in 2.1.4 either). If you are running Parallels, Little Snitch will block attempts made from Parallels to use the Mac network for the guest OS. However, there is no allow/deny dialogue for this so Parallels outputs an error about psl and quits. Very annoying but if you turn off Little Snitch, Parallels will launch fine. (Version 2.1.4)

LEMERLOT Still old security bug! Although Little Snitch's preferences should be LOCKED to provide security they are UNlocked when my Powerbook restarts UNTIL some seconds after starting up have passed by. To be clear: After some seconds it locks itself automatically - BUT it's open before so there's no security when the computer is starting up! This happens even with the new Little Snitch 2.1.1. (running Mac OS X 10.5.6). I filed that security relevant bug 5 months at the developer ago but unfortunately it's still part of this recent version Little Snitch. GMAPPER I have a licensed copy of LIttle Snitch and it pretty much works as it is supposed to work. I use it whenever I add software that I'm a bit uncertain about, to see where it phones home. What I can't understand is why all of the comments and reviews that are anything other than complimentary are getting consistently marked down in the comments. While the reviewers come to a somewhat negative conclusion, their remarks seem well thought out and even-handed. These are not trolls just hammering the software for no apparent reason, so why bump them down? Makes me wonder if the negative marks are well-meaning fanboys who will hear no evil about their beloved Little Snitch, or if it's part of an effort by the developer to push negative reviews down the list. I trust that it's just fanboys, but they aren't doing the developer any favors. Let's give the software on MacUpdate our honest assessment, and let the individual make the final decision about whether or not it's right for them. (Version 2.1.1)

CORPSECORPS If you want to see this same problem gone horribly out of control, look at the application "Transmission". There's an entire fanboy "hit squad" on the topic which will belittle, demand proof of claims from, and pile with frowns, anyone making claims of problems or concerns about software, or about one of their own. They will equally build up with smiles, any statement which is positive, or from one of their own. If somebody should suggest that it's going on, they deny it though it's obvious, as many few posts have no + or - rating, and many are as high as 10 one way or the other. When i pointed it all out to MacUpdate, i was disappointed when they told me it wasn't a "moderation issue". :( (Version 2.1.1)
| May 11 2009 |
ROBOTANK I don't think that what's happening with Little Snitch is that big of a deal. When people like a piece of software, they tend to frown on negative comments simply because they don't agree with them, regardless of how fair the comments are. I can't see any evidence that the developer has anything to do with this. In the end, you can't really do anything to stop anyone from frowning on anything. As long as long as people's reviews and comments are getting out there, the frowns or smiles won't make much difference. For the record, I do like Little Snitch, but I wouldn't frown on a comment unless I felt that it was unfair or uninformed. (Version 2.1.1)
| May 11 2009 |
KOBALT There's a big difference between a negative comment and a smiley/growly face point score. Personally, I'll accept a well thought out and reasoned negative comment as a valid review, but I'll never attach any value to the point score for any (good or bad) comment. Those comment point scores are simply too vague, meaningless and above all faceless. If it ever came to a vote, I'd vote for removal of those useless point scores - with a big smiley face! (Version 2.1.1)
| May 11 2009 |
I see no point to the smiley/frowny face scores. They should go, and MU should bring back display of ALL star ratings instead of just the overall. While some people will stab at an app with 1 star across the board if they have a problem with it or the converse, in general, i liked seeing a graphic representation of the specific areas of the app people were satisfied or dissastisfied with. MACTICK I have had none of the problems cited by Flatpicker with any of the versions of Little Snitch. The LittleSnitch Uninstaller removed everything except to plist files (at.obvev.littlesnitchconfiguration.plist at.obdev.littlesnitchmonitor.plist) and I found nothing else left on computer, using both FindAndFile or EasyFind. I assume not deleting the 2 plist files is deliberate, as it permits upgrades without having to re-install serial number or change configuration.

FLATPICKER Last week, I thought I'd finally give LS a try. It worked as promised and, as I'd be warned would happen, the constant prompts and warnings drove me nuts in less than a day. I don't doubt that the software is well engineered -- perhaps too well. I decided I wanted it gone, and carefully followed the uninstall instructions by using the uninstaller contained in the package, and then rebooting. Result: LS, though invisible to conventional searches, continued to function, but at the cost of hangs with both Mail and Safari. I couldn't shut it off; I couldn't get rid of it. As I'd already followed the uninstall instructions, I tried everything I could think of: repairing permissions with DiskTool, rebooting in safe mode and running AppleJack (the auto/restart thing), rebooting again in safe mode when AppleJack didn't fix the problem, and then running /sbin/fsck -fy, rebooting and trying Onyx (which froze imediately), rebooting and trying MacJanitor (which froze immediately) -- you name it. By this point, I was seriously angry, and wrote an email (through webmail in safe mode) to OD's customer service department. I received an email back fairly promptly, in which the rep indicated that OD "is not aware of any problems with the uninstaller" except in cases where one tries to use the configuration routine to uninstall or doesn't reboot after a proper uninstall. Now, since a simple web search discloses plenty of people complaining about the LS uninstall, I have to assume that OD is either clueless, or deliberately avoiding the problem (for whatever reason). In the meantime, I found EasyFind, which installed painlessly and promptly located all remaining traces of LS, including the LS kernel, which the uninstall leaves active. All the remaining files were located in hidden/protected folders and are normally invisible in Finder. OD seems to want users to believe that the location and persistence of these files and the problems they cause is some kind of bug -- one that the rep said they'd like to know about so they could "debug" it. Given that a simple web search for problems yields multiple hits, I'm afraid I simply don't believe that the folks who were capable of creating LS in the first place are that inept, or that they're unaware of the problems. The kernel doesn't "accidentally" remain active in a hidden file after one has followed proper uninstall instructions to remove the program. My system is now back to normal, thanks to EasyFind, and the odds that I'll ever use LS or any other OD software again are exactly nil. If the quality of a piece of software is to be measured by the workability of ALL its components, then I can't give LS any rating higher than 3, and that's only because it does do what it's billed to do. Don't want to say how I'd rate the company, as I'm trying to cut down on cussing. I do know that I don't trust 'em. (Version 2.0.5)

DESTERWALLABOO Did you read the instructions for Little Snitch?.... did you look at the prompts and options when the windows popped up? You shouldn't be constantly getting prompts and pop-ups after your first day. You set things to DENY ALL CONNECTIONS ALWAYS, or ALLOW ALL CONNECTIONS ALWAYS for various apps. Once you do that, no more pop-ups... or extremely rare instances of them. (Version 2.1)

FLOOCE I used little snitch 1 and 2 for quite some time, but now decided to stop with it. When I reinstalled little snitch 2.0.5 lately, it completely crashed my system, which I couldn't boot anymore. Drive and permissions repair from OS-DVD didn't help. Luckily I made a time machine backup 10 minutes before the crash, but needed to reinstall my system! LittleSnitch is past for me from now on. No use and potentially dangerous. If you get malicious software, then they can hide their activities by using the connection of a browser or something. For normal programs, well of course it is nice to control the home-phoning, but seriously, after I had it for a couple of month, I found that there is nothing to be worried about other then automatic update control, which was pretty much it that was requested. If you find use for it, despite the problems with uninstall, despite the deamon and kernel-extension running, despite the fact that malware can find its ways anyhow, and IF it doesn't crash your system, then it is an alright tool for controlling and monitoring network activity and see what is going on. The GUI is alright, would be better if the functionality could be turned on/off, and the way the rules are set is alright as well, with enough options. Nothing for beginners though. All in all: Can't recommend it. (Version 2.0.5)

PSEUDO TASUKI Huh. Never heard of LS killing anyone's OS install before. Try deleting the kernel extension. Boot off of the install DVD, open Terminal from the Utilities menu and type this: rm /System/Library/Extensions/LittleSnitch.kext If the LS kernel extension was the issue, that should make the system bootable. After that just run the Uninstall command from the Little Snitch installer and it'll clear everything out. (Version 2.1.1)

CITIZENVERN I've been using Little Snitch for probably 2 years now, and finally shelled out the meager price to own it. It's well worth the price for the peace of mind it offers. I tried a similar program, i forget which one, and although it seemed formidable i stuck with Little Snitch for its simplicity and ease of use. Little Snitch has the basic features needed to tip you off to when some program's trying to silently connect to the internet. The only problem, the reason i marked it down for features, is that most of the time the alert is that some obscure program is trying to connect to some obscure site for some mysterious reason. "Alert! Blah blah blah.something wants to connect to blahblah.appleorsomething.blahblah on port 80!" So, if anybody at Objective Development is reading this, i have a suggestion that i hope can find its way into reality: An ever-expanding database of known port activities, similar to and including the databases kept for virus definitions, that would explain better what's going on and wether it's a goodish or baddish thing. Now THAT is worth at least a 5 and i will gladly buy a new version to get it! (Version 2.0.4)

ANONYMOUS I have just updated from Little snitch 1. The application works fine as it did in version 1. However there was a big surprise: unlike indicated in the on line documentation of the upgrade, little snitch is no longer in the prefpane of the system. There is now a small (ugly) icon in the main menu bar. If you miss it, you may think that you have all lost both the old and new LS versions. An obvious additionnal feature is that you can see easily the IP and activity of the remote servers you are connected to. The other improvements are latent, meaning that you do not have to know them if you do not specifically need to. Concerning the VAT, I am surprised that non-european firms accept to collect the VAT for foreign countries. Do they get paid for it ? If not, why do they accept the additional "free" work ? Strange... (Version 2.0.4)

MYDRIVEC I have used many new programs and software firewalls. In my opinion, Little Snitch is too detailed and stops too much traffic. Instead of just at an application level. Further, there seems to be no way to turn off the program or limit it for other less technical users. I had to spend the first day looking over my wife's shoulder to ensure she choose the right permissions. The very same ones I had chosen under my profile. MISHA I've been using this since it first came out... there's nothing else like it on the Mac. It's definitely a power user's appgrandma probably wouldn't be able to figure out the prompts it displays or what to do. But if you know anything about network security and want to make sure that nothing on your Mac is connecting anywhere it shouldn't be, LittleSnitch is terrific. (Version 2.0.4)

CHRISDPRATT This app is effective at letting you know when other applications are attempting to access your network connection or "phone home". However, it having some default filters for standard Mac OSX applications and processes would be nice. You wouldn't believe the number of miscellaneous daemon apps there are. Additionally, sometimes it failed to remember permissions I'd already given an app and would ask me again. That said, the UI is a huge monumental failure. Once installed, there's no way to stop it from loading at startup or close it. To be fair, in normal operating conditions you probably wouldn't want to anyways, but I was running the trial which *annoying* interrupts you every 3 hours with the configuration dialog and makes you restart it. Actually, that was enough to turn me off. If you're that worried about making people buy your software, use a time-limited demo or something. (Version 2.0.4)

HIGHWAY ONE The trouble with these reviews, is that any old pratt can come on here and say what they like. Chris, you are talking utter nonsense mate. The GUI can be hidden, and set to stay hidden on start-up. Once you have *properly* denied an app or process access to any port forever it will remain denied. Surely it is no big deal to just once-only select 'allow forever' for the Apple processes that you trust. Once it is done, you can forget about it. There *is* a time limit on the demo; it's three hours. I have no affiliation with the developers of this app, but have used it for the last 6 years and tbh I would feel unsafe were it to be absent from my machine. I recommend you try it again Chris. Try reading the instructions this time. (Version 2.0.4)
| Nov 2 2008 |
SMTIPS I agree, Chris you should read the instructions. And what's wrong with a FULLY functional demo that lasts for 3 hours? Unlike numerous other apps that are crippled or give you like...2 tries then quit...LS allows you to see the full version in action then to decide whether it's worth purchasing to you. Too many people come on here giving bad reviews of good software when they should RTFM and pay for the thing or stop bellyaching about it. (Version 2.0.4)
| Aug 15 2008 |
CH5719 Version 2.0.4 seems to have problems. My console logs report a lot of crashes of the UI agent. Also, some apps aren't able to connect since LS seems to assign weird process ids to them and can't utilize rules there. Disabling LS fixed this, but since this is not an option for me, i switched back to version 2.0.3 which didn't give me any issues at all. Hope they fix this soon. (Version 2.0.4)

MUDFLAPPER I love Little Snitch. It's rock-solid. The new interface is attractive. The UIAgent and the Network Monitor only use about 6MB of memory, each, and neither of them hog the CPU. In fact, I've never seen CPU usage rise above 2.5, and that's only when the Network Monitor window is open. It's a little on the expensive side but I purchased it on sale though a promotion so I'm not complaining one bit. Besides, I'd rather have some piece of mind than a couple more bucks in my wallet. Thanks to the developers for this great app. (Version 2.0.1)

OKIEHABU NetBarrier X4 does a very good job of notifying the user each time an app tries to call home. It can be set to generate a popup advisory complete with any OSX audio tone. SyndicationManager, an app running in the OSX 10.4 System folder, is a repeat offender; I finally got so tired of seeing popups alerting me to SM's frequent attempts to transmit packets OUT, and was being DENIED, etc., that I found its main repository in Macintosh HD/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Syndication.Framework and enclosed the SyndicationAgent app in a .zip-locked folder. I then had to delete the un-zipped original; but no more problems since. Dashboardadvisoryd is also a bit troublesome, so I did the same thing there, since I never use Dashboard anyway. Peculiarly, Mac Mail now has a little glitch where dragging an item from one place to another in the body of a message does not remove that item from its former position. One must be extra careful with editing because of this. As well, web pages now complete loading with the "X" remaining in the toolbar reload space, as opposed to displaying the reload icon. Clicking the X, however, bumps the process to completion so that the page can be reloaded, such as when js is required to view content. Another troublesome thing is the question of precisely what function port 47807 serves? Users who run a port scan (in Network Utility) on 127.0.0.1 will discover that P: 47807 is open. In Terminal, running netstat -an will reveal that 127.0.0.1 is listening on 47807. Listening for what? Does LittleSnitch know? (Version 2.0.1)
| Nov 13 2008 |
RSBLANCHARD Yes, port 47807 is LISTENing on 127.0.0.1, and this is in the "Server" range, it being at, or below 49151 (3/4ths of the way to 65535). It is tcp4, which means, when ESTABLISHED, it is a full connection under IPv4 TCP. IP=127.0.0.1 is a loop-back address, part of "localhost", so one would think that this is local to your machine. However, this may NOT be the case, as "localhost" is also registered under two IPv6 addresses on your machine. Furthermore, from all sources that I can find, port 47807 seems to be an unregistered port. If anyone can tie this port to a particular process using a particular UNIX command, please let me know. (Version 2.0.4)
| Nov 14 2008 |
RSBLANCHARD Little Snitch will probably NOT detect TCP port 47807 being served-up because it only detects OUTGOING traffic, and the outgoing destination port (which would be the originating port) could be something innocuous-sounding like port 80. (Version 2.0.4)

GARY30 I recently installed Leopard and the new version of Little Snitch (2.0). In trying to grok the new firewall situaiton I visited the Objective Development forums and to my shock I discovered that Little Snitch does not and has not in the past monitored/blocked all outgoing connections from third party apps. I am floored. I had trusted this application for years. If there are third party application developers that have figured out how to get around Little Snitch, then how long will it be until spyware developers can do the same thing. BEN_MARKO Has a lot of trouble with distinguishing between apps that use multiple ports and those that only use one (or two). When you have to constantly set preferences for an app that uses multiple ports due to CONSTANT pop-ups from Little Snitch, it can get to be a....REAL PAIN IN THE BUTT. Other than that, it works as advertised. The beta you can get from the developer's website shows a much improved GUI, that seems to overcome this serious shortcoming, as you can set Little Snitch to now ignore attempts by app (thereby bypassing all of those repeated pop-ups), and not just by each individual attempt itself. The downside is that the beta WILL erase all of your prefs from the previous version. A further (huge) negative is that I kept getting pop-ups that seemed to come from something called "named" and something called "nttsup." I had no idea what these were, if I should allow them, or what...? I tried to uninstall the beta and it basically did something to my internet connection that kept me from...well, getting to the internet at all. I seriously hope that LS isn't going the way that Spamfire did, from a once great app to an overdeveloped lemon. (Version 2.0b6)

8OO8 Well, my panning of Little Snitch's developer's ethics, below, was totally unwarranted and unfair. I was reminded that LS was also included in July's MacUpdate bundle, which I also had purchased, so I did get the version 2 upgrade without charge. The fact that the developer agreed to participate in both February's Promo special as well as July's bundle speaks well of him. But yes, I guess he did have to draw the line somewhere regarding a free upgrade. I apologize to the developer for unfairly impugning his ethics, and I fully retract my negative comments regarding them. A public stoning of myself will be arranged as punishment for my egregious comments. All are welcome to attend. Stoners are particularly welcome. Stones will be provided. (Version 2.0b6)

8OO8 Little Snitch is is a fine app, but what I find a bit hard to take is their business ethics, i.e., their free upgrade only for those who purchased LS after February 15th, 07. Without doubt that cut-off date was chosen intentionally to get another $12.95 from Promo purchasers. The MacUpdate Promo was on Feb. 12th at 40% off. The upgrade to v.2 is 12.95. Now, paying $12.95 more is, in itself, not a big deal. But I'm sure, though, that Little Snitch's developers already knew when they arranged for the Feb.12th Promo that they could get another $12.95 from Promo purchasers several months later; version 2 was already being prepared for release several months hence, right? Shrewd......but slimy none the less. I'd really be interested to know how many people purchased the Promo on Feb.12th. Multiply that number by $12.95 and that's the amount of additional money that the developers stand to gain. I'd say that most Promo purchasers will buy an upgrade....I will. But I think that the developers' ethics stink. Feh! (Version 2.0b6)

LEOOFBORG Instead of jumping to conclusions, why don't you contact the author himself?? The promo happened 6 months ago, do you expect him to remember EVERY LITTLE THING? I have TWO Little Snitch licenses, one from 2004 [which I happily upgraded] and another that I got from the mupromo around 2/16... yes, it's a 32*** number, and yes, that one was 'free' for me. Again, developers do not have perfect information, I'm sure he's more concentrating on coding now and not licensing. I recommend that all of you who got in early on the promo _ask nicely_.. Setting a cutoff date at 6 months is reasonable. Missing it by a few days is at the author's discretion... IF he remembered. (Version 2.0b6)

GREGJSMITH There was a bundle promo in july, which would seem to be included in the free upgrade. Most upgrades are only allowed within 30 days at the most. 6 months sounds pretty darn good. (Version 2.0b6)
| Sep 2 2007 |
LEOOFBORG My bad... I got Little Snitch 'again' in the July promo...not 6 months previous as I wrote. Sorry to mislead.... regardless, this is a MAJOR upgrade to Little Snitch. I've already written a bug to the author and gotten a response.. you can't pay for developer response like that. Little Snitch is more than just a network filter with this release. The fact that the author is giving you a beta key to try things out is icing on the cake. (Version 2.0b6)

KAGAMINOKO Currently testing out the beta. So far it's running smoothly, no hiccups as of yet. I am just a little disappointed that I would miss out on the free upgrade, since I purchase my current license under the MU promo just 3 days before the cut-off. Perfectly reasonable, since I did get a good discount off it, just that "missing out" so close makes it a little hard to swallow. (Version 2.0b6)

IWEDLER First, Little Snitch is amazing. One of the best utilities for the Mac. It's highly recommended for everyone. My only wish for a later version is, it should not only display the network activity, it should display the traffic values, so i don't need MenuMeter or NetMonitor. The only "Negative" about version 2: It's not a PreferencePane as before. It's splitted into 4 apps, and each eats some of my (limited) ressources. -> v1.2.4: 1 process = 33 MB real Memory ->v 2: 3 x 32 = around 120 MB real Memory (so i remember) That's too much for my PB G4 with 512 MB (Version 2.0b6)

I've trashed everything I can think of using "Appdelete" and I still get the following security alert from Little Snitch: Application "finderpop-daemon" (1744) attempts to inject and execute foreign program code in "Finder" (107). This is a security risk as it may allow "finderpop-daemon" to circumvent Little Snitch. It works very simply and works well for what it claims to do. GLOBETROTTERDK I have just purchased LittleSnitch in an attempt to improve the security on my G5 running Tiger 10.4.8. I have noticed that It tries to block apps that want to access the Internet by way of something called "port 80". Some of the apps that have been caught doing this are Firefox, WeatherDock and Google Notifier, CopyPaste as well as a process called "SystemUIServer", but on the other hand, LS is configured to allow apps like the QuickTime player to be able to access "port 80". Why the difference between apps, why is it important to block "port 80" and what do you do when a lot of these apps don't allow you to change the port that they are accessing? (Version 1.2.4)

TWELVEIGHTYONE Port 80 is the 'internet' port, as in all traffic that uses http:// will travel through port 80. It is not wise to completely block this port, because you will not be able to access the web! Well, you'll be able to access secure websites, because they use port 443 (https://). Ports are like doors into your computer. Some need to be open, some need to be locked. There is no 'solution', only one that is specific to your needs. For instance, Safari normally only needs access to ports 80 and 443 (normal sites and secure sites). But if you try to play a RealPlayer stream Little Snitch will ask if you want to open numerous ports. This is because Real uses different ports to send data to your Mac. The Little Snitch website has excellent advice regarding ports, and their developers are very quick at responding to questions. I'd suggest giving them a call/email. (Version 1.2.4)

KAZ Found in the earlier comments... It is amusing that the developer of such a great program has a utilizes a phone home to ip 216.71.206.78 in this program Little Snitch. This Ip is the IP Little Snich uses itself to phone home. I discoverd this after updating my Netbarrier firewall to the NetBarrierConfig File and this Ip is in the default blocked list and is named Little Snitch Phone Home Address which is Blocked forever. That is like Anti Virus programs creating Viri. Seems a bit unethical to say the very least. I do however, still use your program with your IP blocked of course." (Version 1.2)

MATT. Little Snitch does what it says, but it is not only annoying, but its like a throwback to ol' Windows. Sometimes the Application in question is a complicated name that isn't quite specific. Uninstallation is really complicated and I had to use Activity Monitor to force quit Little Snitch and System Preferences, sometimes it crashes and stuff. Don't use this. (Version 1.2b5)

JON As long as you set it up properly it won't annoy you, as for uninstalling it its easy.. perhaps you should learn how to use your mac before you make 'nubie' comments (Version 1.2)

ANONYMOUS why didn't you use the 'uninstaller' !!! (Version 1.2)
| Sep 6 2005 |
JAMESKITTY comes with an uninstaller, as for the cryptic application names... ever consider it's reading it from the resources within the application? it's only annoying at first, until you tell it what you want to connect and what to block. we mac users generally like that kind of parity. of course if you want something that does all the thinking for you.... (Version 1.2)

It sounds like you're rating the software low because you don't understand how it works or how to use it. It's ultimately simple and comes with an installer. (Version 1.2)
