HKPEPP  Old version of 2.5.x was great until it stopped working out of the blue. I upgraded and purchased 3.0.6 and I can't open my cookbook. I can see the cookbook file but the software doesn't seem to recognize it once I click "open recent." All I get is a blank screen (actually, nothing). Any suggestions?

WJB3WVU  I've been using this program for a long time now. When it was purchased by the current developer, they changed it in a way that isn't necessarily better, so I've decided not to upgrade (for free) and have stuck with version 2.7.4 - the last iteration before changing hands. The new style seems cluttered to me, with all the flags under the category column, and all the check-marks under the recipe column. Why? The old version accomplished the same thing without the clutter. Less is more.

XANTHIPPE  Very simple, very easy to use and perfect if you need to copy/paste recipes. Yum will take the text and parse it so that you can insert all the ingredients in one go and it will split it up for you!

Handles shopping list, displays step-by-step in huge letters. NICE!

Handling of categories could be a bit easier - takes a moment to figure out how to assign (category drawer is found under menu Recipe, but not Category) - but welcome that each recipe can be in several categories. Could be a more user-friendly way to indicate what I have in stock for the shopping list. So, not 5-stars, but a very well-earned 4-star

RAMPANCY  Sparkle updating is broken - I tried to do an update via Sparkle from both 2.7 and 2.6.6 (both on separate computers) and they both reported that I was at the latest version and that no new updates were available.

DOODAH  Great little program! Easy to use and very friendly.

I would love to see a keyword search function (I don't see one) to quickly find a recipe with a certain main ingredient.... say chicken or beef.

PETERSCHAUFUSS  Excellent little program - and FREE!

What I like about Yum! os the fact that it's very customizable - most other recipe programs for the Mac are very US-centric, but being from Denmark I use the metric system and also prefer to list the different foods by their Danish name.

In Yum! I was able to import a long list of food names from a recipe site, by editing the Default Food preference file, and I was able to replace the existing Units variations with my own.

The only thing is miss is a weekly planner, but instead I've just created a custom categori called "current week" where I add all the recipies I want to make in the week to come. That makes it easy to print out a complete shopping list

TIM27  This program is great. The only thing I can think would make it better is to be able to assign a label color to recipes to highlight your favorites. Or perhaps star ratings?

KEMACSABE  Running Yum 0.7.14 and just downloaded 1.1, hence a question: Is there anything special I need to do to upgrade aside from backing up my recipe collection? Do I Trash the older version before dragging the new one to the Applications folder? The only oddball thing that I've experienced with this version is that when I launch Yum, a Finder window opens to locate the document. I would think there would be an automatic link to the file to open without having to search for it. Maybe 1.1 fixes this?

CHEF  I use the Jaguar version and find it very good.

It takes a bit of time to set up (I'm french and I have to change all in metric and translate all the "cups", "bags", "spoon" etc...). But once it's done, it's just perfect.

And it's free !

Good job mate ! Keep it up !

NIXANZ  I'll agree my website is shoddy, and lacking in up-to-date info. I'm not into marketting and the site is merely the barest essentials required for publishing the software. If I was interested in marketting, I would actually charge people for using the software.

By the way, the changelog is included in the download. You've just got to look a bit harder. ;)

ANONYMOUS  For a recipe organizer, this app is updated with almost annoying frequency - but considering the alternative (abandonedware), that seems like a silly thing to complain about. It'd be nice to have the changelog, but I don't worry about that so much with an app like this. Also, I have to admit I just use it for the included recipes - a gourmet I'm not, but this is nice to have.

ANONYMOUS  How annoying that the developer of this app seemingly can't be bothered with something as important as placing the version number of his app and release notes/version history for it on his website. Hell, he doesn't even include version history in the download.

Shoddy.

NIK  You must be talking about Yum :-) because shopping list, and other database-type features have been on the to-do list for Yum for some time. Hopefully before the end of this year, but hey, it's free software so in my own time.

By the way, does anybody know how to get the administrators of this web site to change the product name from "Yum!" to "Yum", as I've tried to get them to do several times?

And does anybody know how to get this developer to list version changes on his website like nearly every other developer does?

IAMDORIAN  I do like this interface. Thre is an intuitive feel to it. However, there are now several redipe programs out there, and only one (so far) will soon be introducing a deeper database larder (for professional cooks, food storage/planning) feature. The program I am referring to (won't mention the name here, in respect for this developer) already has a shopping list feature. The larder feature push whatever app first offers it into the limelight, in terms of feature sets. I'd like to support this package, as it has the most tastiest GUI...but... : )

Watching Yum closely for any announcement. DEVELOPER HINT: There are MANY people who'd like such a combination of features.

RONALD PRICE  Yum is a very nice app with a clean and efficent UI. It is hard to explain look and feel stuff but it "feels" the way I expect an OS X app to feel. Little detail things are very simple and direct. This can be a little disconcerting but once you get used to just doing what you want instead of trying to figure out how to do it everything "just works".

Also, the developer responds quickly and effectively to bug reports which is a good sign.

MAC NEW USER  It's working fine now with 603. Thank you very much.

Ever try to thinking of create the buying list. For example, if we wish to cook several recipe from our recipe library, we need to check the amount of ingredient we need to purchase. I wonder whether it is possible to add a command to open a small windows for us to drop the recipe in and it calculate all the ingredient type and quantity needed.

Once again, to the developer, thank you very much.

PAUL  It seems we have more serious problems now. When I open a collection the Category and Recipe Name columns seem to be working fine but when I click on a recipe, It doesn't show it. The collection is okay in 0.5.5.

I tried trashing my old preferences file, didn't help.

When's 0.6.3 coming out? ;-)

PAUL  I like this app too, but I've noticed a few quirks:

When you cheate a new category the wrong field gets the focus, instead of the name you get the quantity field.

Pasting text into the Method field is also flakey, I had to edit the pasted text to make it stay, otherwise it would vanish sometimes!

Importing from MasterCook wouldn't see tb and ts as measurements, so a lot of work is required to fix the import. It would also be nice if the Method part of an import would have a "remove carriage returns" or "reformat" command.

Speaking of importing, too bad it can't import files from previous versions. Some users might find that handy.

NIXANZ  To Upgrade From Older Versions:

If you're having any problems upgrading from an older version, please try saving your file with version 0.5.10 before running it in 0.6.x. (0.6 dropped support for some older versions; 0.5.10 reads all versions back to 0.1).

IAMDORIAN  Very nice, and very intuitive. Now all it needs is some sort of database so that food items can be tracked by date and use, and updated to reflect additions/subtractions to/from a larder, and to track food items whose shelf life is going to - or has already - expired. Then you'd have the perfect tool for a real cook, a scout camp, large families and of course, those of us whose interest it is to be prepared for contingencies with food storages.

This could be a pro version and you could charge. I'd buy. There is already another company working on this, so don't drag your heels! : )

ANONYMOUS  Yum! is one of my favorite freeware apps. It's clean, intuative, and extremely useful. I was without it for a short time after the last update while i upgraded to Panther, and i missed it very much. As others have said, the developer is extremely gracious and prompt with his responses. A word of caution: the new release of Yum! is not actually compatable with OS 10.1.5 or below, despite what it says here, so if you're still using 10.1 hang on to the version of Yum! that you've got.

JON  Yum! keeps getting better and better. It's simple and intuitive, and it has all the features most of us cooks will ever need. No, it will not drive you to the store, clip your coupons for you and compare the unit pricing labels on the shelves. But it will give you an easy, pleasant-to-use way to save, organize and print your recipes. By the way, I was one of the users experiencing the crash-on-launch issue with the prior version, and I'm delighted to have the chance to thank the developer here for his extraordinary kindness and responsiveness.
