JMAHON24  Microtek will leave you "High and dry." A while back I had purchased an S-400 scanner and within a week upgraded to Leopard. The scanner no longer worked. I contacted Microtek numerous times and was finally told they were not upgrading the necessary software for my unit. I turned to Silverfast for help, they delivered software which ran as good or better than Microtek software I had ran on previous Microtek scanners I owned. Never again Moicrotek, you stink..

FRANKE  Like others, I am frustrated that Microtek isn't keeping up with needs of *current* hardware owners. But what company does these days?

Still, I panicked when I couldn't get my i900 to work w/ Leopard. For a while I used an old SilverFast just to keep the scanner working. That's fine, but SilverFast is expensive and incredibly slow for jobs that don't have to be perfect.

Now I've download for Microtek's ScanWizard 7.61 from MacUpdate. (I had recently gotten v7.52 from the Microtek website, and it was useless.) This one does the trick.

I love this scanner, even though I'm not thrilled w/ the company these days. It's the best I've owned. Given the quality of most of the others under $1500, I'd go with Micritek. I hope it lasts a lot longer, but when it's time, I'll probably buy another... now that the software problem is finally solved.

Thanks for making it easy to find.

RICHMOOG  DON'T buy Microtek - I have a ScanMaker 4700, a great product which performed flawlessly until Mac OS Leopard! I have repeatedly tried to get some information regarding a new driver but they seem more concerned about me buying a new scanner!?

WRONG attitude to customers, WRONG attitude to increasing scrap heaps on our planet!

RICHMOOG  I note this sw as they have dropped support for the previous non pro sw which allows a whole lot of their older scanners to work! It seems Microtek are using Leopard as a money spinner..

TURNITAROUND  Microtek advertised a scanner years ago, i think it was a V1212 or something. It never worked with OSX 10.3. although it said so on the box. Tech support claimed an update was in the works. Months passed, no update! I tried to return it and was not able to because I exceeded the time allowed to return.

Never again will i spend my money on a Microtek product or recommend their products for the company i now work for that has over 5000 employees.

HP proved to be the best scanner for the job!

ORION MK. V  I agree 100%. Microtek pretty much abandoned mac support during a time when the promised updates and support. Now that they're back I could care less.

Epson, Canon and HP overall work very well... sometimes spotty with drivers/software, but they always seem to provide some support.

ROG  At any particular time you might be able to find a scanner that works for a Mac, but then when the next Mac update comes out the scanner wont work anymore... I have a pile of scanners here (Microtek, Canon, and Epson) that are all in good working order, except the software is no longer supported...sometimes months after I bought them. The only scanner that I have that consistently works is a Microtek scanner from over 10 years ago that's hooked up to an old beige Mac with SCSI.

SINFE  I feel it my responsibility to write about the Microtek scam, how they cheated my mom to by a Scanmaker X12 with a light-lid for as much money as the actual scanner. This was like 4 years ago and to this date she hasn't been able to scan one single negative or dia.

Some poor scanning through USB 1 under OS 9.2 but not SCSI and forget about OS X, let's say that the support doesn't reach up to poor, it's down in the sours. A lot of money down the drain.

Be ware of the con-men on Scanmaker and I strongly advice you don't buy anything from fraud people.

ANONYMOUS  I have never rated any product before this, but my feelings were so strong that I was on the web looking for microtek just to let them know that scanwizard 5 is by far the worst product I haver ever used. It looks simple. Too simple. I can not even name a file. it's untitlted 1 or 2 or 3. cannot move from on program to the next, cannot save a file. help is no help! I am not the most savy on a computor, but I can get around photoshop, microsoft publisher, paint. I really hate this program, what a waste of money.

3ABNPUB  You CAN save to a file name of your choosing. But you may need to switched to Advanced mode to do it. Unfortunately the tiny, unlabeled Advanced mode button is a little hard to figure out. It's in the upper right corner of the ScanWizard interface I believe (I don't have the app on this computer to verify). From there you should be able to figure out how to do this. (The button to scan to a file is in the main button bar.)

RUFUS T. FIREFLY  Well: 7.20.1 is the latest version listed on the site; its not listed as "Tiger clean"

Like a lot of people I've had trouble keeping my Microtek scanners running. I had read many forums and troubleshooting places; still, I couldn't get very far. Its a flaky piece of software, and install is a pain; there are many things you must remove. I had done all this and still the scanners didn't work.

And then I remembered the old "SCSI Voodoo." I thought we were past all this, but evidently not. For me, the scanners came to life when I switched the USB cable from going to the tower to going to the cinema monitor.

If you're still trying to wrestle with Microtek SUB devices, and you've done everything all the other forums are telling you to do... you could try this: switch where the USB cable goes plugs into.

THEXYONE  Well got this update to work, hope it stays that way.

I got rid of all the other drivers but my scanner, yes, just dumped them in the bin and held my breath and deleted.

They can be found at: Library/Application Support/ScanWizard 5 V7/Support Bundles/Scanner_Drivers.

The smart thing to do, I guess is a 'Custom Install' in the first place.

Fingers Crossed and I hope can now avoid using messy, too many options, slow but cheap - VueScan.

THEXYONE  I've waited till August to install 10.3 and then my 8700 gave up working, so I load this update and guess what, it still don't work.

Why hasn't Microtek put an uninstall on their package, so I can could try it nice and clean?

Had to go back to VueScan, which I don't like, hey but it's better than nothing.

HELEN  Why doesn't Microtek provide support to those people who have purchased their product - whether they are current or old scanner models?

Why do they say that they can't help you and direct all queries to another company (VuScan), where we have to PURCHASE their product to make our scanners functional again!!

Shouldn't Microtek provide the necessary plug-ins in the first place? Why do they insist on purchasing the necessary plug-ins or whatever? I am just sorry that I bought a Microtek Scanner at all!! How was I suppose to know that this is the kind of Technical Support that one would receive - a customer who purchased their product - who believed in their product!! Is Microtek just spending more time, money and resources in manufacturing new products, rather than good customer & Technical support!!

MOLLASK  I'm with the rest of you. I've a ScanMaker4 that won't run in Panther. Epson may be the way to go. Umax isn't all that helpful with my other scanner. They want me to reboot into 9 to use that. They do link to another site that will sell me software for over a $100. How much was my Umax? Free w/computer purchase. The Microtec, on the other hand was a $600+ scanner brand new. You would think that they would still maintain support for those slightly higher end type peripherials.

MAGNUS NäSMARK  I have to give Microtek some credit for finally providing this update. Vuescan works OK with 5600, but previewing is very slow, which, when scanning many things at a time, can be very frustrating. The Simple interface in ScanWizard 5 is however terrible, and very ugly (Windows looking). The batch function in the Advanced mode is very good and simple to use. Having used Vuescan and this I have to say I really prefer Mikrotek's official drivers. Having an OCR function integrated is also a very handy feature that Vuescan does not have.

WHATEVER  workaround for Panther.

Installing Microtek Scanners in Macintosh OS X Panther:

Microtek is in the process of developing scanner drivers that will be compatible with Macintosh OS X Panther. Until these new drivers are released, our technicians have developed a workaround that will allow for compatibility of most Microtek USB and Firewire scanners in Panther. Although this temporary fix has worked for several customers it has not worked for all. Also Microtek is not offering support when connecting a Microtek SCSI scanner to Panther. In addition, the temporary fix is limited to individuals who are running Mac OS X v10.2 Jaguar.

LARAINE  "Microtek is not offering support when connecting a Microtek SCSI scanner to Panther."

That's disgusting. I was also extremely surprised to find so many reviews of "poor" for Scanwizard 7. ScanWizard 3.0.7 (which came with my ScanMaker E3 and which I am still using) was so good. I have been evaluating VueScan and so far finding it disappointing in comparison to ScanWizard 3.0.7.

RANDY NORIAN  I have a MTK 4700. Well, after installation of the OSX driver, my computer would barely get past the startup screen w/o crashing. And no way to uninstall. What a disaster. I had to reinstall my whole flippin' system, no matter what I deleted I could not get rid of the constant freezing. With the new system, I tried it again, just to see (nothing to lose) same result. No way to remove whatever traces it installs in whatever mysterious locations. Who says there aren't Mac viruses? I think this counts as one. STAY AWAY. My .02 anyhow.

VINNIE  The selection for positive and negative transparencies is grayed out in the OSX wizard. I have to boot with OS 9.x to scan the slide and use the old driver. I have never been able to scan a slide or negative without getting streaks and banding down the slide. (using the LightLid35) The slide is clean, as is the scanner. Support is non-existent for my Scanmaker 4700, so I'm SOL. Think I'll just dump this and buy an HP. That gives me decent slide scans without streaks.

ANONYMOUS  I HAD scanwizard 7.0 working on my G4 Powerbook. Then one day the "Scan To" button simply disappeared. I upgraded to the 7.10 drivers, and now the scanwizard app locks up. I've even tried a clean wipe (even the Library/AppSupport Framework directories), and similar problems. Also even tried downloads from their asian and european web sites.

It worked great, when it worked, but there are obviously bugs to work out.

The console reports that the 7.10 driver has some plist problems -- could it be that the actual download is corrupt? I've gotten no useful reply from Microtek.

KBJOHAN  I echo the sentiments of the other unhappy users of Microtek's scanners. I used a SM II for years until it finally gave up. The X6USL I bought to replace it was buggy with the software, but worked for a year until I switched to OS X. I got so aggrivated waiting for the Classic interface to boot up while attempting a ten second fax scan that I bought a 4800. Microtek's web site said they had a native driver and software for OS X, but as soon as I load it my G4 went nuts. The scanner finder could not be disabled on startup, and it caused some kind of OS glitch that prevents me from changing my screen resolution. My last hope was the 7.10 update. IT WON'T EVEN FIND THE 4800 IT IS SUPPOSED TO RUN NATIVELY! Now I can't even go back to the buggy previous version I was using.

I will never buy a Microtek product again, and I will tell everyone who will listen how worthless their products and support are.

DATDEMDAR  I totally agree with everyone else who has taken the time to express their frustration at Microtek. I have a MRS-600ZS in mint condition sitting in a closet that ran into the same problem - delay in driver tech support to the point where this particular model suddenly was not even listed on updates after over only a few years. Big bread down the loo. It sure would be nice if Microtek got their act together and started releasing drivers for the older (even SCSI) models instead of abandoning all support of their slightly outdated product. STAND BEHIND WHAT YOU HAVE SOLD NOT JUST SELL. The delay in releasing drivers for OS X does not surprise me in the least.

AJI  VERY DISAPPOINTING.

I'm using an 8700 pro.

I am not able to scan in line art mode at all. Have to force quit and then restart sometimes. Lots of crashes and error messages. Crashed when trying to make hi rez grayscale images.

Will work with rgb but that seems about all it can do. It also freezes/crashes when I have it look for my scanner. Before the developer tries to defend their crappy excuse for software, the old version of scanwizard pro worked ok.

That version doesn't have some of the "features" but it worked. And silverfast worked and so did Vue Scan. So this is an example of shoddy programing and I will not buy another Microtek scanner. I doubt they will ever release a new update, so don't hold your breath.
