Now you get to see much less with a huge footprint Never thought it actually needed anything else other than fixing the presets (which I've heard haven't been fixed), and allowing sequential numbering to be based on Name sort, date sort, and size sort. Also all support for older systems is killed? WTF? All for a cosmetic workover? Wow, for a loyal user, there sure are a lot of reasons to become a traitor. ^_^ Sticking with the 3.1 version. No choice really.

RUBAIYAT I am balking at paying this steep upgrade fee for what appears to be cosmetic changes. It seems the real bugs haven't been fixed with the presets. How hard could it have been to include a Help or Manual to explain yourselves? That's the trouble with changes without real improvements, makes users rethink their loyalty. Sorry but I am off seeing what NameMangler can do for me.

THEMADCOW I'm not impressed. It's hard to use and not intuitive in the least. I had high expectations from the website, the app looks just like 'it works'. But it doesn't. The simplest of tasks, remove ".zip" from a series of files. Either the functionality is hidden or it's defective. Either way, back to the drawing board on this app. I'll take another look with the next version.

AIKOUSHA Another update, another test, more bugs (or should I say still the same bugs). Presets are still a major nightmare... You can only assign them AFTER you have renamed something, or they don't fix to the right search/replace strings. If the preset loses the name you give it (which it does frequently), it says "new preset", until you TRY to rename it. Attempting to rename a preset has severe issues, as simply clicking on a line forces whatever name was previously selected, and does not allow you to type in the proper name. Even if the name shows properly in the list (as if you had successfully renamed it), it does not show properly on the pulldown button... I kept getting "New Preset" until after several rename attempts, and then it started inheriting the names of other presets, and never the right one. If it has issues with non-alphanumeric characters that might be the problem, as the names I tried to assign were: "_[Suffix]", "[Prefix]_", " - to spc", "_-_ to spc", "_ to spc", and spc_spc to spc" (when the previous refused to name properly. In the end the presets had "[Prefix}_" and seven instances of "spc-spc to spc", yet they all had different functions. but since I can't memorize what they do, if not labeled right, it's basically now a useless function. Thankfully I was only doing a test-drive. IMO, common sense dictates that you should save presets BEFORE clicking the Rename button, and the list for renaming needs to work like other lists where double clicking while "editing" the list will allow renaming, and dragging (which doesn't seem to exist) will re-order the presets. I may be picky, but the presets have never worked right (or at least within common sense) since it has appeared. I just keep with the old version, with the previous interface (no presets) since the next feature I would want to work with, would be the presets. It's beautiful, otherwise.

NEUTRALZONE This is a genuinely useful utility. You can justify the cost on the grounds that a good file renamer can potentially make back $26 of labor when applied to hundreds or thousands of files, where Spore has no function that I know of that could make back the price of either app. That said, I stopped using Renamer4Mac when it changed to a paid app. Using NameMangler now.

NEUTRALZONE Sorry, SED won't work. No drag-and-drop integration with Finder and standard photo apps, must learn geeky syntax, can't see where you can number files, extreme potential for unchecked user error...I bought a Mac so that I wouldn't have to deal with nerdy command lines (I use NameMangler, which is as free as the Terminal but much less torture, but used to use Renamer4Mac which is also very nice).

MARK EVERITT I don't get this allergic reaction some people have to the terminal. If you want a bit more finder integration then use http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/24105/%3e-cd-to-... to put you in a terminal in the current directory in finder and the rest is a sed one liner. I agree there's a lot of potential for user error, but you can get sed to echo what it'll do before wrecking up the place. I guess my point is that nice GUIs go a long way, but at the end of the day there will always be those tasks that are better suited to the terminal. It's a shame I know. I'd rather have a nice graphical doodad to do this in a clever way using finder but nothing I've seen (forgetting cost for a moment) comes even close to the capabilities of sed. I'm not a computer scientist you know, and even my modest mind can cope with a bit of command line.

POMPON This software is very simple and rapid with a lot of functions. Preset is very useful ! When I had version 2.8, I used the donation button and now with the lastest version I have a free licence thanks to the developer. TIAGO FileBuddy doesn't work properly with Leopard and its last update was about a year ago... Also, it has way too many features (and I don't mean that in a good way). The fact is that Renamer4Mac is a wonderful software... A one-trick pony, sure, but a very useful and straightforward one... Yet, not worth the $26 the new company is asking for it... I'll keep using 2.8

ANOMIA OK, I feel like a dope; this program is my music re-title lifeline - and somehow I stopped it from working! All the text I want to edit is now blue in the edit window and I can't make any changes. It's the same for my system drive as my externals, even though permissions to write and read are the same for all (I'm admin). Any guesses? It was working fine for years(I love this app!!!) and just a few days ago this started... please help...

AIKOUSHA This does exactly what I needed and was instantly obvious what did what. However, just a few things need better explaining... like regular expressions. For example, I want to remove checksums from names in the format of "[A875BD6F]" but don't want to impinge on anything outside of the brackets. I might be thinking of something too complicated for this, which might be a good excuse to make a GREP? system and a minor shareware fee for it. (I'll probably have to research this on-line, but was kind of hoping it was in the help menu). Also, if recursive means working on folders within folders of files, a checkbox needs to be added to allow this for folders dragged in with files. I could only get the "recursive" to show up when only dragging a single folder in, but needed to have it work on only the files and full folders I dragged over, not a single full folder. A checkbox for working on files only might be useful, as typically I never need to alter the names of folders. This little app has saved me over 20 hours of work, in just 5 minutes. THANKS!

ERROR This is very nice! I have used "A Better Finder Rename", "Filebuddy"... This is my favourite. Simple and does its job well. The feedback is clear, you know precisely what is going to happen... I spend too much time in ABFR, just to figure out which option I need to select in order to do a simple rename. The only thing I wish for is the ability to recursively rename - directory and all its contents, because it is often easier to dragndrop a folder than hundreds of files...

I just wish R4M would let you recursively add files and folders the way R-Name does. The difference between recursive and references is clear in my mind.

HOBY Great app, as it's always been. One problem though, the wonderful idea of the new Conxtual Menu feature is a bit useless, since it doesn't add all the files you have selected. Only the first one. If there was a program to model this after, it would be Drop Rename from OS 9. That was the best I'd used on any platform back then.

However, it does not handle recursion (i. e. drop a folder on it and make it apply the changes to all the objects in that folder), so it is rather useless for most batch renaming jobs (if you have to drop every single file in manually, you might almost as well rename them yourself...). The "protect extension" function is a good idea, but badly implemented. The algorithm will consider every character after the first occurence of a dot to be an extension. A better way would be to check for the last occurence of a dot in the filename and then consider everything behind THAT.
