EXEGETEJR  We use QB pro 2007 (pc version) via Parallels and Vista (a terrible solution) but we're in Canada and Intuit continues to COMPLETELY ignore Canadian Mac users, leaving us with the 2004 Mac Canadian version as the last compatible version ... so we're stuck with Vista and the pc version. As such though swapping QB files with out accountant is easy enough - except for having to fire up a second OS just to do so! Wishing there was an alternative that could export a QB compatible file...

I've emailed and received dozens "customer care" calls from Intuit and their standard response is to tell me they "recommend using the pc version with Boot Camp and Vista"! Wow, that's great Intuit. It is mind-boggling how such a known and supposedly reputable company can operate this way...

DR. GIRLFRIEND  One of the first things people ask when switching to Mac and attempting to use Quicken or Quickbooks for Mac is: "What's a good alternative to Quicken (or Quickbooks)? I keep a list in my documents folder to email to people who ask me. Here are the current contenders, in no particular order:

Prospects

iCompta

MoneyDance

MoneyWell

MoneyGuru

iBank

Checkbook Pro

Fortora Fresh Finance

Budget

If you have to use any Intuit products, I wish you luck. If you don't, you may want to consider supporting a company who is more customer-friendly to the Mac community. ~Best wishes.

DR. GIRLFRIEND  Thanks for the comment, KLAGRECA. I tend to classify iBiz as more of a "billing" app rather than an "accounting" app like the other Quicken/Quickbooks alternatives I mentioned above. I have a separate list for time and billing apps:

OnTheJob

GrandTotal with TimeLog

Billings

TaskTime

OfficeTime

Studiometry

KLAGRECA  Here's a perfect example of why Quickbooks falls hard.

I'm trying to enter cash back on a deposit. Sounds simple, right? Well, Quickbooks tells me that "The cash back account is invalid." And then tells me to choose another account.

Well quess what Quickbooks? The account is fine by my accounting standards, so if you have some secret validation method....shouldn't you let me know??? Like "account X is invalid so try Y."

Thanks Quickbooks. You're more damaged than Manny Ramirez's baseball career.

MACERICG  The ONLY reason we run Windows on out Intel Mac is to run the PC version of QuickBooks for our accountant. The Mac version just plain stinks! Less features than the PC version and buggy.

Add to that you cannot simply exchange QuickBooks files between Mac and PC without running file converters. Is this day and age this is ridiculous! All the major software manufacturers took care of cross platform compatibility long before Macs were even running on Intel. This is a joke Intuit. Why can't you bee more like Microsoft or Adobe?

Oh, and support stinks no matter which platform you use.

There search function doesn't use the dates I put in. Lots of crashes. Documentation leaves a lot to be desired. How can a major company like Intuit make such terrible software?

ACCGUY  Quickbooks 2009 for MAC has bugs. I can get it to crash on Report filters every time. Even trying with the canned-QB company and from safe boot, it will crash. It's really disappointing - my move to the MAC has been great except for this program. Does Intuit test their products before release?

FILCHESCAT  This version 10.0.0.3 R4 has been out for several weeks. Crashes on me about 1 in 4 times of use. Fortunately no data loss - just a pain to restart the app and that uneasy feeling of possible data loss or corruption. Intuit's crash reporting system always gathers crash and system info and allows for input, but rarely if ever do I get any feedback after the report. For a while the feedback was that they re-did the sound (??), but even these reports have ceased. This 2009 version is truly beta and should be majorly cleaned up before release as a commercial product. Too bad I'm stuck with it or I'd seriously look at another business accounting system.

MACUPDATE ADMIN  From Intuit, December 17, 2007:

"There was a problem with the update for QuickBooks Pro MAC for version 2006 and 2007. The update was prompting that "there is not enough disk space to install." If this message is displayed, click the No button. DO NOT install the update. It could remove files from the desktop folder of your computer.

Intuit has resolved the problem that caused this on the server. Do not install the update if it prompts that there is not enough disk space. Close and re-open QuickBooks and it should no longer prompt you to install the update. The latest release for QuickBooks MAC 2006 is currently R4 and the latest release for QuickBooks Pro for Mac 2007 is R6."

GAIA  Will not buy another upgrade of QB for Mac.

The previous versions were full of bugs and did not deliver as promised by Intuit.

When the one of the upgrades started making multiple archived versions of our records which we could not open, I could not get help from Intuit no matter how many ways we tried to contact them: email, phone, and snail mail - absolutely no response. Bookkeeper hates it.

We were using Aatrix software and now with the 2007 version Intuit is no longer working with Aatrix but still does not do payroll from within the program like it does on the PC. Now you have to use PayCycle, which starts at $25 A MONTH for one employee and goes up from there. For my small business with one employee and about 5 contractors the price would be $45 a month for PayCycle service. Does it work? I'll never know.

Another very unhappy Intuit QB for Mac customer.

JORY  Previously, I have been totally satisfied with QuickBooks, but I must admit the 2007 version is a bit less impressive than the previous versions. There are some ridiculous bugs, such as filtering in reports returns the information on the wrong filter term.

There are some good new features, though. The new Layout Designer is great, since ugly invoices that don't allow for much customization was a real problem in previous versions. Unfortunately, there's now a problem with wrapping text that extends past a column's line in an invoice.

The Universal Binary was a welcome update, as I've gotten quite tired of constantly rebooting my MBP in order to run QuickBooks and Quicken. (Too bad I still have to do that for Quicken.)

There are still some major usability issues, though, such as contextual menus that don't contain useful options.

AKMEDIA  Just started using Quickbooks Pro 2007 and this barely-bug-fixed version is not that much improved from the 2005 version I was using. And, the Intuit's marketing department has jumped WAY ahead of the coders and basically lies about the program's (in)ability to do online banking as advertised. There is NO Web Connect (as in Quicken and the Windows version of Quickbooks) and most banks do not let you download the required *.qob files needed to import into Quickbooks Pro for Mac. The overseas tech support person I spoke to suggested this feature may be included in a future version. So why did I upgrade. Oh yeah, because Intuit said this version had features it does not have...

Also, iCal integration is a joke. The program just puts events in your Quickbooks calendar on the date and at the time you entered it. That means that putting a bill into your iCal calendar does not show up on the billing date, the due date or any other date or time that is at all useful. Intuit should be ashamed to have charged for this 'update.' If you want a feature-rich version, it buy the Windows version and run it in Parallels!

MARUKO DRINKING TEAM  A lot of people rightfully blast Intuit, and QuickBooks, but it has really gotten better. I just switched from QuickBooks on XP (running under Parallels) to QB2007 Mac. There is no longer much disparity between the Mac and PC versions.

Even though it sucks in little ways (cannot keyboard-navigate to checkboxes and buttons in many dialogs, very poor double-click behavior which sometimes works normally when editing text, but sometimes double clicking a word in transaction opens the transaction in an editor), it is SO SO MUCH BETTER than it once was.

The legacy Carbon interface has been largely replaced by a modern Cocoa-based one. And the features have mostly caught up with the PC side.

Intuit is still a pretty bogus company, but most big ones are. You might have to hold your nose a little bit, but QB2007 really is the best small business accounting package for Mac users.

JORY  I hear a lot of people bitch about QuickBooks Pro on the Mac. Personally, I find it to be awesome. For the purposes of running my business, the app works beautifully and provides about 85% of the functionality I require. In fact, it tends to offer more functionality than I require, but I grow into the rest as I get better at running my business and understanding the ledger that keeps it going.

QB 2006 is a great improvement over the previous two versions, as it behaves more like a Mac application with each major revision.

That said, there are still some things that aren't terribly useful (such as useless contextual menus that _could_ contain useful functionality).

I'm happy to be using QuickBooks and highly recommend it to business owners.

Incidentally, one feature I'd like to see added is the ability to backup to a personal server, rather than just to .Mac, which requires I spend $100/yr for a service I don't want or need.

SWAY  Quickbooks 2005 is a big sham. Don't waste your money.

It still can't make use of a high-res logo on forms (MAC users value aesthetics, they shouldn't have overlooked this.) Trying to get a form to print properly is a frsutrating experience (they should simply feature drag-and-drop like the Windows version.) It still won't handle payroll internally (Aatrix is an equally bad program.)

If Intuit game a damn about their MAC base, they'd add the same features that the Windows version offers. Instead, they rely on online surveys and beta testing to come out with their so-called "upgrades."

I'm having my company switch to an accounting program built with 4th Dimension such as "4th Quarter." It's more of an investment, but it's a much more robust MAC-based accounting solution.

CHRIS J  Beware of converting from the PC version. The Mac 2004 version happily imports your data, but then silently chops fields that it decides are now too long. (Intuit developers apparently have no communication, data structure planning, etc... I think they like it that way.)

It gets worse... when I tried to export to a PC version to send to my accountant, the export goes smoothly, but my accountant cannot open the file. No useful feedback, just no go.

So I call Intuit, and after almost an hour talking to a tech guy, they reveal that there is another field length related issue, that can only be solved by shortening text wherever it is too long. I am a very light user (one credit card, two bank accounts, a dozen invoices a year) and there are way too many places to fix, and no way to find them.

The best Intuit could do is grace me with the offer to let me pay them for "data services" which is some mystery group that fixes data filles. Unfortunately, they never contacted me to pick up the data file like they promise... and after waiting 10 minutes while the tech filled out some mystery form to send to the mystery group.

I am going to try 2005 to see if the export is fixed, but I doubt there's any way to salvage all the missing data in my chopped field.

Note: don't try to order version 2005 from Intuit's web site... I filled out all the forms, looked at the "cart" field which said 1 item, pressed "Continue", and then the next screen says I have 0 items! Argggghhh!

JEGBERT  Intuit has done nothing but rob the Mac community with their "half-featured" QuickBooks 6.0 and incessant paid upgrades. The lack of features as compared to the Windows version is nothing but a pathetic excuse to try and get Mac users to pay more money. Virtual PC is nothing short of "sickening" with the Microsoft takeover of the product, but thanks to Intuit that is still our only option if we want to use a productive finance program.

MARY  As with most Mac users, I was using QuickBooks (2002) via Virtual PC because of my accountant is using a PC. When the Mac 6.0 version came out with the transfer capability, I was extatic and bought it. My biggest complaint so far, after only messing with it for one day, is that you do not have the layout designer feature as you do in the PC version, a huge dissapointment. I have been able to create job jackets, info for our employees to see about what they will be doing for the job they are working on, nice looking invoices and estimates. If they can't implement this into the Mac version, then unfortunately I will have to resort back the miserable world of Virtual PC.

Hey Intuit check out other softwarw e companies policies (Adobe, Quark etc etc) if you own a recent version you pay less. I dropped the full price on Version 5 only 6 months ago. Great way to win over the OSX user base by charging for an update with a year of a new release.

CHANDLER, AZ  Typical Intuit... They had promised a way to import information form Windows when it was announced, but that soon followed to be a pay-for-service add-on, which was quite expensive per file. After helping convert clientele to the OS X version from Windows and OS 9, it ended up costing me money. The problem remains in that there is only one real standard in the business and that is QuickBooks. MYOB, although it has it obvious advantages, is lost in the shuffle, due to lack of marketing money that Intiut has.

In the end, this update should not cost users of version 5, as the most important feature was shown to users from the beginning. Import and Export features should have been built-in from day one. I also agree that AAtrix downright stinks. Either AAtrix needs to fix the severe problems in its software, or Intuit needs to build in a solution for payroll, if they expect QuickBooks for Mac to ever make any money.

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZONA  Absolutely the worst upgrade I have ever seen for a software program. If you are attempting to convert from an existing Windows Quickbooks file, DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. Not only did the file convert incorrectly, their ridiculous, charge per call tech support had no solution to my problem. Their suggestions were to start a new company file or pay for their data recover specialists to fix the file. Another $250 for that service, $99 is your willing to wait a couple of weeks. Of course, they offer expensive service plans to resolve this issue. The problem is, why should I have to pay for additional service for Intuit to figure out how to fix their program. Bottom line, hang on to your PC version or try a different accounting program. It was a thoroughly disgusting experience.

RON  Our office converted from Windows QuickBooks to Mac QuickBooks this year because all our office machines were Macs except one Windows machine which was used for payroll and accounting. To do payroll on Mac QuickBooks one has to use the program Aatrix Payroll. We have found the Aatrix Payroll to be impossible to work with because of its frequent crashes and a clumsy interface. After five months we gave up and went back to the Windows QuickBooks because the payroll works seamlessly. Since the new QuickBooks version still leaves out payroll, except for the Aatrix module, we would not use it.

ANONYMOUS  Disappointing.

Not a lot different than 4.0.

Features, performance far behind the latest Windoze version. Only reason to upgrade is for OSX compatibility. Otherwise don't bother.
(Version 5.0)
