FRED_ALSO I think Snow Leopard broke this and the other scanners. In preferences, I select AirPort card in active or passive mode and get an error that the drivers can't be loaded. After I click the OK button about 10 times I get the following message. "KisMAC was able to load the driver backend for Airport Card, but it was unable to create an interface. TAS50 This version has much better support for passive mode on the airport extreme cards in the Macbooks and Macbook Pros. If you want to see the full change log you have to got to the website and look at the commits in track from the current revision to the previous revision. It's a lot of small stuff and a ton of crashers.

DOOBIEXX Awesome to see this project under development again! The only true gui for testing wireless network's. If you can't get kismac to work properly then check their support forums' which are filled with info. Your second best option for testing wireless networks is honestly switching out of os x and load a virtual machine with Backtrack 3, and have access to every "test" tool imagined, but for OS X, kismac is the one and only with a gui. If your good with command lines get aircrack-ng through darwin ports and use that.

XPLICIT That's probably because you have no wireless device with Orinoco or PrismII chipset in use, but just an Airport card or something. And such a device is not supported by KisMAC as far as I know.

Oh I kicks I get driving around and seeing all these networks! KisMac how I adore thee. The only thing I ask is re-injection ability with my D-Link DWL-G122 apart from that it works like a god. JDOBLAK Several have asked about the purpose of this utility; here's my experience: I am responsible for (among other things) making sure that all our wireless networks are secure. KisMac allows me a quick way to ensure that none of our users unknowingly 'leave the front door open'. It also allows me to check to see what channel other nearby networks are using; so that when we show up at an event and plug in our equipment, we can hard-code our router(s) to a channel that is several steps away from everybody else -- to avoid interference. It's also been useful for detecting free WiFi access points that are not advertised in the 'real world'; just scanning the list of available SSIDs for one that is named something like 'CoffeeShop FreeNet' saves a lot of time when on the road.

FOLLEREC Here's a little tip... get the latest revision. It now has support for passive scanning using Airport Extreme cards. Some say it requires at least 10.4.3 and the AirPort Update 2005-001 from Apple to work. As of this writing, the latest available revision is r76. There is a prebuilt binary package available as well for r75. I got r76 from http://www.ethicalhack.org/downloads.php . Of course, if you don't trust the source, compile it yourself.

ANONYMOUS Fun to play with. However, the version history states that after 0.09 it should release airport cards cleanly after use. This hasn't been happening for me. After I use the program the airport card doesn't even seem to be installed (of course it is). Restarting resets everything, though it has to be a forced restart as a standard restarts gives that darkened screen "You need to restart" message. A bit annoying, but not bad considering is a free, and early release program. Keep up the good work. Also, a suggestion for the developers. The bog logger is a good feature, but I'll bet a lot of bugs happen when there is no good internet connection at the moment. Maybe a way to store reports 'til later would be a good addition. Just an idea.

JACK GREEN You may have to load up the airport software again off of it's CD or download it from apple (by plugging it in hard wired with the ethernet cable... remember ethernet cables?) The software is buggy. It does not reinstall the apple drivers correctly upon quitting. It seems to be a mistake to have released it that way.

WEBDOG What a great full featured program. KisMAC picks up an unbelievable number of networks. With 0.07b, KisMAC has become a much more stable program. No longer do I get frequent random crashes. However, bugs remain. GPS support seems very sketchy - KisMAC only records coordinates for roughly 20% of the networks I detect. Some un-Mac like behavior - save your data, open a new window, when you save the new data overwrites the old data without prompting to save under another name (lost 600 networks this way). Great software, but with erratic GPS support, unuseable as a general stumbling program for me.

You are concerned about other networks in your area and want to find out if there is a potential of them being hacked into. And you will warn the network owners ofcourse. 3. I would like to be able to run other internet programs in the background though and have this program ignore that network activity. Also, I think that some of the menu features should be acessed from the main window, as opposed to just though the menus - that's nit-picking though. The mapping feature looks better than that of MacStumbler and iStumbler (more feature rich) - although I have not actually used any of them since I don't have a GPS. This is a good excuse to pick one up though..... It's great someone finally wrote a program like this for OS X. I think the driver issues should be worked out before this is ready to be the final version.

JASON T I find KisMAC to be stable when used correctly. Obviously a lot of people didn't read the directions. Quit everything. Yes, I think that KisMAC should just stop anything from trying to access the net, but that's a difficult one. Making the user disable network connections would probably be the best. Having to quit anything that accesses the net includes Konfabulator, Mail, any browser, sherlock, and check that software update doesn't try it too!. It's a hassle, but it's a specialized tool. I think the author deserves to be congratulated on making a good gui and working on the nuts and bolts of getting a packet re-injection system implemented. However, since you can optionally patch the system I'd like to see a xnu MAC spoofing patch in the patch installer and and definately an uninstall/restore. This software will let you audit your network and check out any network around you. It lets you test the encryption quality on a network and see if the WEP can be cracked. It locates wireless access points, provides mapping, and gives you encounter data. In short it is the best stumbler/wepcracker around for the mac. Read the DIRECTIONS. Hint, always quit everything, choose a driver, start, then nicely stop/exit and quit. Do not assume that shortcutting out of any process here is good. Read the site FAQ and don't force quit KisMAC unless you really have to.
