INTELLECT INSIDE It could be better... Quinn does not do well at randomizing pieces. It will kick out six or seven identical pieces in a row, quite frequently too. It will also hold back on delivering exactly the piece you need to get yourself out of a jam. It's as if it's been programmed to analyse what you're trying to do, and deliberately throw you a monkey wrench. I'd like to see it throw deliver pieces randomly. Maybe the developer tried to make it random, but it isn't: it defies the odds far too often. A minor complaint: I would like to be able to assign PAUSE to a single key of my choice. Command-B is too complicated, especially on high (read: fast) levels. (Version 3.5.1)

Playability should be rated at 3, not 5 stars. The non-randomness issue makes it very difficult to play successfully. It's actually worse than older versions. One would think it would be getting better. (Version 3.5.1)
| Jan 5 2008 |
J.W. Have you calculated the odds? I'd be surprised if this were true. Even in a random sequence, you're bound to have chains of repeated elements. And it's pretty easy to imagine that the odds are "against" you, when they're really just random (at least, as random as a computer can get). I mean, it's possible that he's got some algorithm to calculate the piece you need and avoid giving it to you, but it seems unlikely. (Version 3.5.2)
| Jan 5 2008 |
J.W. Also, you can assign another shortcut to Pause using System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts. (Version 3.5.2)

SCRABBLE_CZAR Quinn's random generator is as random as it can be. It uses a popular equation which is referenced in the simonhaertel.de forum, and is very well done. You may get multiples of the same pieces at times, but that is the product of the game being more random, not less random. If you play a long game, it will average out, and the piece distribution can be found by using the console. The Help section on the quinn site and in the app itself detail just how to check the distribution of pieces. Quinn is awesome!! The best game of its kind anywhere for any platform! MIKELEVICH One small fault: (hard to put into words) when a piece slides down past a group of other pieces and needs to slip across to fill the gap - you need to continually tap the key to get it to move across - simply holding down the key as it slides past and reaches the gap means it just continues to fall and doesn't slide across. This makes some occasionally tricky moves impossible - and it's counter-intuitive. 1. that you could save a game. Occasionally one gets really spectacular groups of pieces - would be great to be able to save the game. 2. that the ultimate challenge of getting zero lines was rewarded by..... extra score perhaps - just a bit more of a celebration. 3. that the instant sideways movement that happens when you hold down the key was just fractionally slower/more controllable - sometimes is too hard to control when in tight spots, requiring that you zoom right to the edge and have to come back again. 4. that you ignore all pressures to 'improve' the game with extra bits, pretty graphics, 'hold' boxes at the top etc etc - it's just fantastic.

1) There is no way to save a game for future use, but if you have a really good set and want to play the game again, you can select Game -> Repeat Last Game from the menubar until you quit Quinn. 2) From the Quinn Help: "If erasing the lines leads to an entirely empty board, the player gets a special bonus of 4444 points times the current level number." 3) You can set the edge snap delay to any value between 0.1 and 0.4 seconds (or "Never" if you don't want the pieces to snap) using the slider in Quinn's preferences (Quinn -> Preferences...) Also feel free to drop by the Quinn Forums (simonhaertel.de/forum/) and post others suggestions etc. (Version 3.4.5)
| Jan 24 2007 |
MIKELEVICH Hey thanks for the response. I've since realised I've been using an older version - now I've updated and have discovered the bonus and the snap adjustment. Also discovered the forum and have been (politely) hassling Simon for a save facility. See you at the forum I assume.

MIKELEVICH Maybe it hasn't really got that many features, but how can this wonderful Tetris clone not get 5 stars all round? It'll launch slightly faster, I guess. If you REALLY want a universal version of Quinn, why don't you do the developer a favour and buy him a MacBook? He says very plainly that he doesn't have an Intel Mac to work on, and that's why there's no official universal version. Either buy him a MacBook or shut up. Oh, and dude? The game is FREE. GESCHAEFTSMAC I really do loathe The Tetris Company. They are like something that sticks under your shoes and stinks horribly. Why would they threaten to sue developers that doesn't even make a dime on the Tetris idea. I hope that those scumbags of the law firm cannot get to sleep at night one day. But wait, that will never happen because everyone always says "if we wouldn't have done it, someone else would have" to sanctify their actions. That's exactly the reason why horrible things like war are possible at all, because people neglect their own responsibilies like preserving freedom. To Alexey Pazhitnov (original developer and now co-owner of The Tetris Company): only because you didn't have any sense for business back in 1985, you shouldn't unload your all too obvious frustration and greed on the backs of free software developers. What's next? Sue the makers of Ubuntu Linux because there is a free Tetris version bundled with every free installation? Damn! Did I just give you a hint to maximize your unpopularity? SMNMX I agree that while this is a fun Tetris app, it reeeeally needs an option to increase the time between one piece landing and the next dropping. That and a safe area above the game that the next piece appears in so that you can move it before it drops, selecting where it appears. As it is, if you have any pieces near the middle and top, you're instantly screwed. (Version 3.3.1)

ATTENTIONWANDERED Quinn is a good but still very basic tetris application. runs smoothly and well, plays very well, looks good. a hold box, (press a key it goes to the box then swaps out) longer time on the ground (immediatly as it hist the next piece comes down, get sme so angry especially near the top) turn off all of those quirky animations and stuff(like when you drop a piece it bounces) i noticed alternate graphics sets, maybe building those into preferences also, i noticed one glitch. sometimes (especially when playing multiple games in the same session) the pieces dont comne down, they just stay at the top. thats it though, this application seems unfinished, it could use alot more features but it is strongly built as it is. thanks for making it free (Version 3.2.2)

NAME I am very astonished about the this professional Tetris application. It has improved a lot since I saw it. It has every feature needed for everyone. This application is even for me as a Non-Tetris-Fan an enormous product. But the thing that annoys me a lot is, that you cannot publish the highscore. And this is due to the fact that scores are saved into a property list file, where you could simply edit the values. I am defenitely sure, that this product, would be included in Apple's repertoire, if it only had an Online High Score system, so that there is more competition feeling. Thank you very much for Quinn. NAME Thank you so much Simon. This is the best Tetris application I am a developer as well, and I think this should be implemented in Apple's applications, it is simply I mean you won't have always the time to play chess or may not always have the concentration too. I mean it has more features than Apple's own (borrowed) Chess game. - Great Apple-like design - Great Apple-like elegance & economy - Great Game implementation However it would be even better, if the developer could make customization of pieces and backgrounds even easier and long staying without a folder. Thus for me it is indispensable. Thank you very much again. (Version 3.0.2)

ANONYMOUS Option-click on the download link. Or use the contextual menu in your browser and select "Download linked file as..." (or words to that effect, I use Safari) and save it to your desktop. (Version 2.1.5)

ANONYMOUS Wonderful game. I've been looking all over for something like this. Simple, yet everything that Tetris was in all its glory. Runs wonderfully, no problems that I've found at all. I have yet to try the multiplayer, but I'm excited to do so. If the game is this great, the multiplayer has to be even better. Thanks to the great developer for this awesome game. One thing though, to continue echoing what everyone else is saying...sounds in a future version (with ability to turn them off) would be great. It won't feel totally like Tetris until I get some cheesy Game Boy music. (Version 2.0.2)

HENRIK Great addicting little game! Could Tetris be beter than it was on my old gameboy? Apparently, yes. The graphics are very nice and alive, the multiple player highscore list is nice (as well as quick key settings changing), and the multiplayer is great. Very addicting! It would be nice to have the option of sounds, a thud when pieces land, a jingle when four lines are removed and so on. Och preferably user changable, of course. You will love this. And it's free and small. What are you waiting for? (Version 2.0.2)

TI Great interface, very simple, and the keyboard settings window is amazingly well-built. It seems the developer of the game has a background in interface design, because it's all very well done. The network features are a cool feature, but the average user who doesn't need that is *not* going to see it, nor be affected by it. Lastly, the game is fun and easy to play. (Version 2.0.2)

NICKV2002 Pretty damn good, sounds would be cool but not needed (make sure you can turn them off). I prefer to just have my own music anyway so that's not needed. GameRanger would be cool though. (Version 2.0b1)

ANONYMOUS This is sweet. It's about time someone wrote this. Not only is it true to the original but its free! I agree that it needs sound but thats forgivable. My girlfriend has been waiting for this game to come out on the mac. She isn't very good playing it on the keyboard though.... adding joystick capabilities would be awesome! (Version 1.3.1)

KEITH W. SHAW the best tetris clone for mac os x, period. it's conformance to the aqua guidelines is simply beautiful! a wonderful game, apple should include this with every mac. only two things could make this any better: 1) usb hid support. i want to be able to use my gamepad ala classic nintendo style. (b.t.w. i know i could get around this with things like gamepad compainion, but hid support is much smoother.) 2) rendezvous network play. based on disney's n64 tetris 2 player mode rules. of course this would kill all office productivity and businesses would start buying windows again. my favorite new way to procrastinate! ANONYMOUS Nice work! Might benefit from a very simple sound set (say, little clicks each time a piece is moved and a little "pop" when the piece is dropped). Also, I like the configurable pieces and background. (Version 1.3.1)

EMDUBYADEE " Version 1.3.1 fixes a mean bug which made Quinn crash on start after upgrading from an earlier version if the arrow keys (or other strange keys) were used to control the game." Still a problem on my iBook, 10.2.8. I did upgrade from an old version using arrow keys. What's the workaround? (Version 1.3.1)

AUTOJC It's Tetris all right. Once I figured out the non-intuitive keystroke settings the game played every bit as competent as the original. (Version 1.2)

ANONYMOUS This latest version (v1.2) makes this game better than ever, instead if trying to improve the already great Tetris gameplay, Quinn instead tries to implement the game as slickly and smoothly as possible. All it needs now is a preference pane to implement the different background and piece style instead of the rather cryptic (at least initally) drag and drop implementation. (Version 1.2)

DANNY GIOIA Quinn is great! I enjoy the ability to customize my keystrokes *including* BOTH directions for turning the pieces- it is essential to me to play great tetris. The undo drop is a breath of relief too. The colours are pleasant. Everything is simple. Bringing the classic just how I needed. (Version 1.1)
