Apple Brother Printer Drivers

Younkint reviewed on 19 Dec 2011
Terrible update. DO NOT INSTALL.

We lost duplex ability on our main Brother HL-5280DW laser printer after this update (as everyone apparently did).

If you do/did install it, the fix is easy: Go to the Brother site, download the driver software for your printer and OS, install it. (I deleted the Brother laser printer before I installed the Brother driver, but others had reported success without performing this step.)

Then, just add your printer in the System Preferences "Print & Scan" pane. All will be well.

Do not allow Software Update to install 2.8 again ...from reports, it will try to do so.

Microsoft Office 2008
Younkint commented on 12 Apr 2011
Office 2004 11.6.3 (April 12, 2011) fails to install, installer quitting after "searching for programs to update." Tried on five different machines, Intel and PPC. Tried AutoUpdate and direct download. Tried starting in safe boot. No dice - nothing works. Something wrong with this one.

Bad download to blame on all but one Intel machine...

@Nacho - We still use it (other versions, too) because it has TWAIN support for scanners, unlike 2008 ...and runs on PPC.

Apple App Store

Younkint reviewed on 05 Apr 2011
I detest this. There's so much I dislike about App Store ...I don't even know where to begin. The entire premise is wrong - wrong - wrong ...and it goes downhill from there. There is absolutely nothing good about it. It's everything Apple has ever stood for turned on its head.

EasyFind

Great FREE utility. Finds more of what I'm looking for - always. Especially good at finding invisible files, etc. Have been using it for years now with never a problem.

No longer free, but price isn't exorbitant either. Worth it to me.

Xmarks for Safari

Sadly, Xmarks has bit the dust. This version probably drinks the Kool-Aid on 1-10-11.

Perhaps the reports of Xmark's death are premature. Evidently there are users willing to pay a small yearly fee to keep it going.

Evidently it's the end of the line for BluePhoneElite. The developer is halting development to pursue other interests. See his website.

MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update

No problem here with 15-inch MacBook Pro mid 2010. Update made through Software Update (in Safe Boot), with all external devices disconnected.

Microsoft Office 2008
Younkint had trouble on 12 Oct 2010
Ran the 12.2.7 update today. All seemingly went well, but we are seeing an identical problem with Entourage on the two Macs we updated (new MacBook Pro and an old PPC QuickSilver).

We have the Entourage prefs set to NOT auto show images in emails unless the sender is in the address book. Normally, when one receives a non-address book email the "header" of the email will have a "Click here to download images" area. Unless you click that message, no images will be shown. After the 12.2.7 update, either the clickable message is totally gone, or is tremendously slow to appear. So far, about 80% of the time there is no way to show images with this security setting.

We will probably have to set the prefs to "Show images always" rather than the far more secure method we had been using. I consider this a security issue of great importance, so I hope there is a resolution quickly from Microsoft.
